Die hatten mehr Ballbesitz, verlagerten das Spiel in die Hälfte der Kolumbianer und kamen auch zu mehr Abschlüssen. Der beste: ein Kopfball von Kane aus kurzer Distanz, nachdem Trippier von rechts auf den zweiten Pfosten geflankt hatte. Der Ball verfehlte das Ziel nur knapp (17.). Die Kolumbianer boten allerdings nur wenige Lücken im Defensivverbund an, in die die Three Lions hätten vorstoßen können. Mitte der ersten Hälfte trauten sich auch die Kolumbianer etwas häufiger in die englische Hälfte, waren allerdings gerade im letzten Drittel zu unpräzise im Passspiel. Außerdem verfingen sich ihre Konter in der guten Staffelung der Engländer. Strafraumszenen blieben so natürlich Mangelware. Aufregung gab es aber trotzdem noch einmal vor der Pause. Bevor es zur Ausführung eines englischen Freistoßes vor dem gegnerischen Strafraum kommen konnte, stieß Barrois Gegenspieler Henderson mit dem Kopf an die Brust. Schiedsrichter Geiger zeigte dem Kolumbianer nur Gelb. Und Gelb bekam kurz nach Wiederanpfiff auch Sanchez, der Kane bei einer Ecke in Ringermanier zu Boden brachte. Dummerweise im Strafraum. Geiger zeigte ohne zu zögern auf den Elfmeterpunkt. Kane ließ sich von der dreiminütigen Motzerei und Reklamiererei der Kolumbianer nicht irritieren und verwandelte trocken zum 1:0 (58.). Das Spiel wurde in der Folge dreckiger. Spielfluss kam angesichts der vielen Fouls auf beiden Seiten kaum noch auf. Und England verlor zunehmend die Linie. Auch wenn sie durchaus noch einen Elfmeter hätten kriegen können. Denn die Grätsche von Sanchez an Lingard im Strafraum war zumindest an der Grenze zum Strafstoß (77.). In der Schlussphase schaltete Kolumbien dann noch einmal hoch. Angestachelt von einem dicken Fehler von Walker. Der leitete einen kolumbianischen Konter ein. Bacca legte quer auf Cuadrado, der den Abschluss dann aber völlig verzog (80.). Falcao kam dann noch zu einem Kopfball nach Mojica-Flanke von links (85.). Der blieb aber genauso ungefährlich wie der Flachschuss des Monegassen, den er genau auf Pickford zirkelte (87.). Und in der Nachspielzeit klärte der Keeper dann auch noch einen Gewaltschuss von Uribe. Und den nutzten die Kolumbianer dann durch Mina per Kopf zum 1:1-Ausgleich (90.+3). In der Verlängerung lief bei den Engländern dann nicht mehr viel zusammen. Der späte Gegentreffer hatte Wirkung hinterlassen. Sie wirkten müde, leisteten sich viele Ballverluste und bauten die ohnehin aktiveren Kolumbianer noch mehr auf. Allerdings blieben die Angriffsversuche der Kolumbianer ohne durchschlagenden Erfolg. Erst in der zweiten Hälfte der Verlängerung meldete sich England zurück und übernahmen wieder die Kontrolle. Doch Rose verzog knapp (111.). Dier köpfte nach einer Ecke über das Tor (115.).
