Join Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musicians.Fergus Linacre of Kingswood takes us behind the scenes of their epic 112-show Australian tour and the raw, unflinching documentary that captured it all. After the pandemic silenced stages across the country, Kingswood made a bold decision to reconnect with audiences everywhere—especially in regional areas starved for live music. When logistical challenges made traditional touring impossible, they bought their own bus, named her Peggy, and embarked on a six-month journey that would test their endurance, creativity, and relationships. Meanwhile, filmmaker Darcy Newton documented every moment, creating what would become the award-winning documentary "ClapTrap."What makes this documentary unique is Kingswood's commitment to authenticity. Inspired by Nick Cave's willingness to be vulnerable on camera, they surrendered creative control, allowing Darcy to film everything without interference. "We're quite honest about where we're at," Fergus explains. "It's not a puff piece for the band." The result is a psychological exploration of life on the road—the highs, lows, and everything in between. The conversation reveals fascinating insights into the band's formation at Melbourne Grammar School, their musical influences (from Aerosmith to Queen), and how they balanced academic pursuits with their passion for music. Fergus shares stories about supporting ACDC and Aerosmith, including a memorable backstage encounter with Steven Tyler.Looking ahead, Kingswood announces fresh music releases beginning with their Tom Petty cover "You Wreck Me," an upcoming album, and tour dates across Australia and Europe. For fans ready to experience their powerful live performances, tickets for their upcoming shows at Port Lincoln and Whyalla will be available at kingswoodband.com.Don't miss the rare theatrical screening of "ClapTrap" at the Regal Theatre in Kensington Park on April 9—your chance to witness the untold story behind one of Australia's most ambitious musical journeys. What has Fergus Linacre and Alex Laska of Kingswood been up to lately?  Let's find out!!Get out when you can, support local music and I'll see you down the front!!Visit: ThatRadioChick.com.au

Legendary Nashville songwriter, Harlan Howard is purported to have coined the expression “three chords and the truth” and friend and colleague Bob Dylan is also remembered for the great line “All I need is my red guitar, three chords and the truth”. Well that's all this riff is. Three chords. No passing chords, no fancy inversions or suspended notes. Just three chords - D A E. Mike Campbell was and is famously prolific in his writing and brought all of that work to Tom in case there was something there that connected. In this case, Tom saw the truth in those three chords and decided to write a masterpiece. It may have taken a while for the final brushstrokes to arrive, but when they did, they truly transformed a young girl with a faraway look in her eye into the Mona Lisa. 3 am whispered. A lamp in the corner normally illuminates a daylight LED bulb. But that's only in the daytime. During the quietness of the night, the daylight bulb gives way to a red bulb. Like a photographer's darkroom. Except I'm developing ideas, not film. Headphones are on. My Apple iTunes library is launched. I scroll through "Recently Added." Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers "Angel Dream" was released just days ago. I miss Tom. And the Heartbreakers. The ringtone on my phone is "You Wreck Me," proving my fondness for Tom's music. Hours are spent in the darkness of night with headphones on, listening to music. Track 3 of "Angel Dreams" fires up, Change The Locks. I can relate to this song. More now than ever. I changed the lock on my front door So you can't see me anymore And you can't come inside my house And you can't lie down on my couch I changed the lock on my front door And I changed the number on my phone So you can't call me up at home And you can't say those things to me That make me fall down on my knees I changed the number on my phone 'Cause I changed the kind of car I drive So you can't see me when I go by And you can't chase me up the street And you can't knock me off of my feet I changed the kind of car I drive I changed the kind of clothes I wear So you can't find me anywhere You can't spot me in a crowd And you can't call my name out loud I changed the kind of clothes I wear It's 3:22 am when I begin to wonder - for the umpteenth time - whether or not my caffeinated drink mixes are contributing to my insomnia. I've been down this rabbit hole before. Many times. I consume about 120 milligrams daily. According to the FDA website that's not excessive. For healthy adults, the FDA has cited 400 milligrams a day—that's about four or five cups of coffee—as an amount not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects. However, there is wide variation in both how sensitive people are to the effects of caffeine and how fast they metabolize it (break it down). Doing some basic math with the help of a calculator that sits right by my mouse, I figure it's been many years since I consumed 400 milligrams or more. Dr. Pepper was once my drug of choice. Then Diet Dr. Pepper. Then Dr. Pepper Zero. I've got a handful of liter bottles in the pantry right now that have been there for months. Rarely do I venture away from a 38-ounce bottle of water with a single Crystal Light Strawberry drink mix inserted. I'm not sure caffeine is much of a player anymore, but here I am wide awake at 3:40 am wondering about it. Should I give it up completely? I wonder. But of all the things that might be keeping me up, I rather doubt caffeine is much of a contributor. It's more substantial than that I figure. As the clock approaches 4 am I'm on track 10 listening to Tom sing, "Climb That Hill." You got to get up and climb that hill Get up and climb that hill You got to get up and climb that hill again Cares. It's an interesting term for life's problems. Cares. We ascribe caring to things positive. “People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care”  ― Theodore Roosevelt "He's a loser. He just doesn't care." "He could not care less." So the anti-sentiment is careless. Care. Less. We sure don't want to be that. Then modern culture admonishes us to stop caring what others think. Selfishness and self-centeredness are considered acts of courage. Disregard the voices in your life who attempt to help you. Don't listen to anybody other than yourself. Sure, you can do that, but it's a high-risk proposition. I'm all for tuning out people who aren't there to help us. People who simply want to throw rocks at our parade so they can feel better about themselves. People who are filled with only harsh, unjustified judgment. But these aren't the people who love us and want our very best. We really need to give an ear to these people and carefully (ther...

In many ways, Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” – which turns 25 years old this month – was the un-“Full Moon Fever.” When it was released, “Wildflowers” seemed sparse and stripped down, especially compared to his previous offering. But it not only featured Petty’s hit-making skills – the album produced bona fide Petty radio and MTV hits like “You Wreck Me” and “ You Don’t Know How it Feels” – but it gave the world a chance to for Petty to pour out his soul in a way that still haunts today. With Rick Rubin’s get-out-of-the-way production, “Wildflowers” is (sadly) Petty’s autobiographical epitaph --- one that he just happened to write two decades before his death.

Shortly after midnight on 14 February 2020 Season 2 Episode 7 aired from the Mix 93.8 FM studios deep in the heart of Midrand, South Africa.  As always it was great fun and, to put it in its historical context, we had the State of the Nation address and Valentine's Day as a backdrop.  There were a couple more technical glitches than normal but the show still hangs together OK, you may not even notice.  One track started again and then later two tracks stopped rather abruptly and I had to deal with that.  In the spirit of good rock radio, it's better to leave those bloopers in than to edit it, its way more natural and a lot more humorous. We kicked off a bit differently to the usual TSORR all-out metal detonation by starting with Josh Ritter and a track called ‘For The Dogs or Whoever'.   Next up Whiskey in the Morning and then a bit of Judas Priest and some Megadeth.  Because it was 14 Feb we took a listen to Bullet For My Valentine and roared through some serious 80's and 90's metal.  I mentioned that although we are only 2 months into the year the honours for Metal album of the year are probably already sorted in the form of Annihilators' new release Ballistic, Sadistic.  We took a listen to ‘Dressed Up For Evil',  I am not quite sure what dressed up for evil would even look like but it's a cracking good song, check out the instrumental bridge at around 1:56.  Our usual bit of TSORR Punk was covered by Anti-Flag, The Clash and Bad Religion and it was the Clash, who's already short 1 minute and 47-second song,  was rudely cut even shorter, apologies for that.   The new Midnight 7-Plus feature was filled this week by Great White and Rock Me, in fact, we had Rock You, Rock Me and You Wreck Me all in a row, try saying that fast 3 times.  Some more local content was supplied by The Burning, check out the podcast of the interview I did with them a couple of months back.  Herman Frank's contribution was definitely one of the highlights of the show as was Johnathan Martin's Liberty off his The Highway Infinity album .  Apologies to Dino Jelusic, he of the golden voice, for the tiny technical glitch and early ending on his new killer track with George Lynch of Dokken fame, I'll play some more off that Dirty Shirley album next week.  The show ended off with a very effective quest to see how much damage I could do in 5 minutes.  The vote from the Whatsapp line was a resounding yes!   Artists featured this week:   Motörhead, Bad Religion. Judas Priest, Rammstein, Buckcherry, Josh Ritter, Dirty Shirley, The Burning, Scorpions, The Gaslight Anthem, Bullet For My Valentine, Herman Frank, Type O Negative, Skid Row, Kiss, The Clash, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Great White, Jimmy Barnes, Megadeth, Johnathan Martin, Tom Petty, Night Ranger, Ryan Adams, ZZ Top, Anti-Flag, Annihilator

Born and raised on a farm just north of Airdrie, Alberta, Mark Lorenz lived and breathed the country life. Learning to ride a horse and drive a tractor was an everyday activity. Mark’s parents raised and trained Pure Breed Morgan Horses. As a family they would tour across Western Canada and the United States showing. The highway was already calling Mark’s name… but it would take a few more years, and a dare for Mark to understand why… “When I was 17, some friends and I were shopping for a birthday present for a buddy that had everything. We were walking through a mall in Calgary, and came across a small recording studio. After some taunting, maybe even a couple of chicken calls, I ended up recording a song. And the rest is history.” After recording his first song, Mark was approached by the recording engineer and asked if he wanted to enter a local singing contest. “I wasn’t sure what to say… I said I didn’t know, but as usual my friends were there to talk me into it…” Mark won that singing contest. In 2006, Mark released his first full length album titled, “Black”. Mark wrote all but one song on this album. “Sweet Summer Nights” was the first single from “Black” to hit radio, and was followed up with three more singles that charted in the Canadian Top 100. In 2008, Mark began recording his second full length album, “Route 72”. The first single, “You Wreck Me”, co-written with Julian Austin, gained Mark Canadian and US radio plays. Four more singles would head to radio, followed by two music videos shot for “Like a Radio” and “Somewhere in Alberta”. He is currently writing for a new project scheduled for release in 2016.
