Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is having a resurgence of The Chicks in our lives. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why the music of The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, should've been gay. For this episode, we will not be speculating about the sexuality of The Chicks themselves as human beings, but rather talking about why their songs give such a queer energy. The Chicks write music from a political activist lens that is so incredibly different from the typical country music lens. To say their music resonates with queer people is a massive understatement. There are so many of their songs that were literally the gay music of the time. We didn't have Chappell Roan or Hayley Kiyoko or those types of openly queer artists. So for us and other gays of a certain age (ie. over 35), Goodbye Earl is as gay as it gets. These ahead of their time icons write songs that feel inclusive, anti-patriarchal, and that have lyrics that sound gay af when we sing along. We talk about the gay specifics of songs like Goodbye Earl, a song that Ellie's extremely queer band The Femmes performs all the time. This song honestly should be a whole musical by now. The music video for it is so gay and so good and if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it now. We also break down the lyrics in Long Time Gone, a song that is wildly gay for having been released in 2002. There is no straight explanation for this song, and to be honest… it's giving Betty. We know one thing for sure, The Chicks music Should've Been Gay. Remember, you can give us your own answers to our Q & Gay on Instagram and follow along on Facebook, TikTok, and BlueSky @lezhangoutpod. Episode 268: On November 18, 1987, Jay Cook, 20, and Tanya Van Cuylenborg, 18, a young couple from Vancouver Island, went on a road trip to Seattle, Washington. Unfortunately, they were never seen alive again. Their bodies were discovered weeks later in separate locations. Tanya had been raped, shot, and left in a ditch in Skagit County. Jay was found strangled in the woods near Monroe, about 60 miles away. The case went unsolved for over three decades until 2018, when authorities were able to use genetic genealogy to identify a suspect. He was arrested and charged with the murders. The man pleaded not guilty. In 2021, after his trial, the man was the first to be convicted using genetic genealogy. The couple's killer was subsequently sentenced to life behind bars. Last evening we had felt a Draft. Morning came, and we saw why - a Triad of Wooden Ships was floating Eight Miles High above us. I was laughing so hard I Almost Cut My Hair with a Dolphin's Smile and Guinnevere had to Carry Me & Lay Me Down or I would've been a Long Time Gone. In other words, Find the Cost of Freedom For Free or it'll be Déjà vu all over again.

After Learning to Fly, 2 of America's Children, The Loner and the Cinnamon Girl, said their 49 Bye Byes and took off Flying to Ohio to Find the Cost of Freedom. Don't Ask Me Questions about why they were a Long Time Gone. Maybe it was because Down by the River they got Comfortably Numb and they were sure that It's The End of the World As We Know It. Or maybe it was just the Pre-Road Downs..
The stories my father has told me about his childhood are ones that have stayed with me. There are stories about the ice cream shop he worked in, the pranks he played on his bus driver, and the trouble he used to get into with his partner-in-crime Bobby MacGyver, but the one that always stuck with me was one he'd tell about his mother. My grandfather was a police officer in New Rochelle and my dad would tell me my grandmother would ask him to bring home a pint of ice cream and she'd eat it while waiting for him to walk through the door after his shift had ended. I can vividly picture her waiting in a chair by the door eating coffee ice cream while anxiously waiting for my grandpa to come home. I share this because today's guest, Karen White, was also impacted by some of the stories her father would tell her as well and elements of those stories are featured in her bestselling novels. MEET KAREN WHITE Karen White is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of 31 books, including the Tradd Street series, The Last Night in London, Dreams of Falling, The Night the Lights Went Out, Flight Patterns, The Sound of Glass, and A Long Time Gone. She is the coauthor of All the Ways We Said Goodbye, The Glass Ocean and The Forgotten Room with New York Times bestselling authors Beatriz Williams and Lauren Willig. Her latest novel, The Shop on Royal Street, came out on March 29th. KEY TOPICS IN THIS EPISODE How reading was a form of escape for Karen How her dad's real ghost stories impacted her imagination and writing The role of encouragement played in Karen's writing journey Why she went from being a reader to a writer after becoming a mother The idea behind her new series first book Why validation is important for authors KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM MY TALK WITH KAREN Writing as an escape. Karen enjoys escaping into a good book. For her, it's more than just entertainment; reading actually provides an opportunity for self-reflection and world excavation that she can't get any other way! When she was young, Karen's dad used to tell stories about growing up poor in the South during the Great Depression. These stories stayed with her and elements of them wind up in her own writing. The importance of encouragement. Karen's 6th grade teacher saw potential in her and encouraged to explore her talent, which put her on the path of becoming an author. Just do it. Karen takes a page out of the Nike playbook while dishing out advice to aspiring authors—to just do it! WHERE TO BUY THE SHOP ON ROYAL STREET Amazon | Bookshop.org MEMORABLE QUOTES FROM KAREN “Just do it. My sixth-grade teacher used to say where there's a will there's a way. I know a mother of four who just who started writing she's now a New York Times bestselling author. She would get up at four o'clock in the morning to write before she had to get up with the kids and then go do her full-time job. So, where there's a will there's a way. Don't' picture anybody looking behind you; write the story that you want to write, and then the rest will fall into place. There have been few episodes to date where Al has never heard of the artist or the album being discussed, but fantasy baseball analyst and pet supply store proprietor Sam Wirsching chose an album that fits that category. Sam selected Tonio K.s Life in the Foodchain for this episode, and it's an album that played an important and memorable role in his childhood. In addition to analyzing several of the album's tracks, Sam talks about how well the album has held up for him, other artists he listened to growing up and his new podcast, Peace Love Baseball.Sam mentioned a clip he had seen of Janis Joplin performing “What's New Pussycat” with Tom Jones, but I was unable to find it. Gottlieb, an engineer. After studying drama at Syracuse University, he was drafted into the Army, serving as an entertainment specialist in the Special Services division from 1961 to 1963. Following his discharge, he became a member, later in the 1960s, of the San Francisco improvisational comedy troupe "The Committee". They made one feature film: A Session with the Committee. He began writing comedy for TV, contributing to The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour for which he won an Emmy Award in 1969, The Music Scene, The Bob Newhart Show, All in the Family, and The Odd Couple. He also appeared on camera on Ken Berry's Wow Show variety summer television program in 1972. Minor acting roles have included Robert Altman's MAS*H and the film Clueless. Gottlieb also cowrote David Crosby's two autobiographies, 1989's Long Time Gone and 2006's Since Then. JAWS - Gottlieb was hired as an actor to appear as Harry Meadows, the editor of the local newspaper, in Jaws. He was hired by his friend, Steven Spielberg, to redraft the script, adding more dimensions to the characters, particularly humor. His redrafts reduced the role of Meadows (who still appears in the Town Hall corridor and the Tiger Shark scene). He wrote a book, The Jaws Log, about the notoriously difficult production of the film.[5] Bryan Singer has referred to it as being "like a little movie director bible". He was enlisted under similar circumstances to work on the Jaws 2 screenplay. He co-wrote the screenplays for The Jerk, in which he played Iron Balls McGinty, and Jaws 3-D. In 2010, folk-singer and songwriter Zoe Boekbinder (http://zoeboekbinder.com/) visited New Folsom Prison for the first time. What they thought would be one interesting day turned into a decade-long collaborative project. Boekbinder visited the prison often over the next five years; performing and teaching music workshops quickly turned into the beginnings of collaborations with writers and musicians who were incarcerated within New Folsom's walls. Boekbinder collaborated on the first of these songs with Alex Batriz, and following that, was approached by many more writers about collaborations. This was the seed for the Prison Music Project and the culminating album, Long Time Gone, produced by Ani DiFranco. Out now on Righteous Babe Records, the album features work by nine incarcerated (and formerly incarcerated) writers. The profits of Long Time Gone (https://amzn.to/31Y5phb) sales will benefit communities impacted by mass incarceration and the funds will be administered by the Southern Center for Human Rights. The contributing writers will decide, collectively, what projects will be funded. The writers own their work and will profit from royalties. You can find Prison Music Project at:Prison Music Project Website : https://www.righteousbabe.com/pages/prisonmusicprojectCheck out our offerings & partners: PowerXL Air Fryer: TryPowerXL.com - code GOODLIFEIndeed: Indeed.com/GOODLIFEFactor 75: factor75.com - code GOODLIFE

Ani DiFranco speaks with Kyle Meredith about her collaboration with the Prison Music Project on Long Time Gone. DiFranco takes us through her team up with Zoe Boekbinder, who brought in songs from inmates incarcerated within New Folsom Prison, and how it’s set to be adapted into a stage play. Part three (at last!) is the opposite of a deep dive – it’s a flight upwards through the night sky exploring the power of drones as medicine. We go into a bit of the reasons why drones have such a physical effect, with excerpts from an article by Robert Lamb (published Nov. 16, 2016; accessed June 25, 2020): https://science.howstuffworks.com/life/inside-the-mind/human-brain/ambient-music-calm-psychic-maelstrom.htm#:~:text=%22What%20happens%20with%20ambient%20music,scanning%20the%20environment%20for%20danger. We then ponder for a moment the power of drones to connect us to the world, and all who inhabit it, through deeply restorative soundscapes. After using some drones created by Tibetan singing bowls in the opening, we move on to the brand new "Celestial Music Box" to consider how the star field above us might "sound" if each star could be played like a music box. Thanks to friend of the podcast Michael Riley for granting us permission to use this excerpt! As always, thanks to all our Patreons for your support! From the composer’s notes: “The sound of a "G" ('Throat Chakra') Himalayan singing bowl being droned, then having the resulting drone copied, pitch-shifted and multi-tracked to produce a long, subtly evolving drone.” Found on Freesound.org. Beatriz Williams and Karen White have both appeared on Book Talk before to talk about their best-selling novels, Beatriz with The Summer Wives, and Karen with The Beach Trees and A Long Time Gone. New to Book Talk is Lauren Willig, who has published six stand-alone novels and 13 installments of her successful Pink Carnation English historical series. All three authors together have collaborated on three novels, The Forgotten Room, The Glass Ocean, and today we'll be talking about All the Ways We Said Goodbye: A Novel of The Ritz Paris, which is published by Harper Collins. In this episode, the Goods from the Woods Boys (Rivers, Sam, and Carter) sit down with the inimitable comedian and actor, Simon Gibson! This is Simon's first time on the show which is both long overdue and quite surprising since Simon lives next door to Disgraceland Studios. The first part of this episode is all about comedy and specifically comedian merchandise and road gimmicks. The boys chat about Simon's new podcast "Roommates for Life" with past guest of our show, M.K. Paulsen. We then get into the main story of the episode: An induction of an entire Missouri town into the Goods from the Woods Hall of Fame. Skidmore, MO had a problem with a town bully and, in 1981, they took care of the problem. The story is pretty violent up so, TRIGGER WARNING in advance if you don't like descriptions of blood and violence but we think the story is as compelling as it is entertaining (Plus it may be the inspiration for the last scene of 'Road House'). Follow Simon on all forms of Social Media @SimeyGibson. Check out that new pod! Song of the week is "Long Time Gone" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, and Tom Jones! This is a good jam! There are various types of cemeteries all around the world. There are those that are huge with grand sculptures and palatial mausoleums. Others are boring with flat stones and markers and fake flowers. Still others seem abandoned to the elements and time. The one thing they all hold in common is that they are a testament to humanity. We lived and we died. And hopefully, somebody cared. Sometimes these cemeteries are haunted. On this episode, we'll explore graveyards in New Hampshire, Florida, Colorado, Massachusetts, South Carolina and Georgia. Join me for Haunted Cemeteries 13! Rolling Stone senior writer David Browne sits down with The Rock N Roll Archaeologist to discuss his new book Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young: The Wild, Definitive Saga of Rock's Greatest Supergroup.Even in the larger-than-life world of rock and roll, it was hard to imagine four more different men. David Crosby, the opinionated hippie guru. Stephen Stills, the perpetually driven musician. Graham Nash, the tactful pop craftsman. Neil Young, the creatively restless loner. But together, few groups were as in sync with their times as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Starting with the original trio's landmark 1969 debut album, the group embodied much about its era: communal music making, protest songs that took on the establishment and Richard Nixon, and liberal attitudes toward partners and lifestyles. Their group or individual songs--"Wooden Ships," "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "After the Gold Rush," "For What It's Worth" (with Stills and Young's Buffalo Springfield), "Love the One You're With," "Long Time Gone," "Just a Song Before I Go," "Southern Cross"--became the soundtrack of a generation. But their story would rarely be as harmonious as their legendary and influential vocal blend. In the years that followed, these four volatile men would continually break up, reunite, and disband again--all against a backdrop of social and musical change, recurring disagreements and jealousies, and self-destructive tendencies that threatened to cripple them both as a group and as individuals. In Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young: The Wild, Definitive Saga of Rock's Greatest Supergroup, longtime music journalist and Rolling Stone writer David Browne presents the ultimate deep dive into rock and roll's most musical and turbulent brotherhood on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Featuring exclusive interviews with David Crosby and Graham Nash along with band members, colleagues, fellow superstars, former managers, employees, and lovers-and with access to unreleased music and documents--Browne takes readers backstage and onstage, into the musicians' homes, recording studios, and psyches, to chronicle the creative and psychological ties that have bound these men together--and sometimes torn them apart. This is the sweeping story of rock's longest-running, most dysfunctional, yet pre-eminent musical family, delivered with the epic feel their story rightly deserves.https://twitter.com/DavBrowne

The Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium during World War I would be one of the bloodiest of the war, killing half a million men. The weather and mud at the field would contribute to dealing that heavy blow. Battlefields of all kinds seem to be epicenters for the paranormal. The blood becomes a part of the earth and seems to cry out from the afterlife. This area of ground would come to be known as Flanders Fields and there are spirits here. Karen White is the New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty novels, including the Tradd Street series, Dreams of Falling, The Night the Lights Went Out, Flight Patterns, The Sound of Glass, A Long Time Gone, and The Time Between. She is the coauthor of The Glass Ocean and The Forgotten Room with New York Timesbestselling authors Beatriz Williams and Lauren Willig. She grew up in London but now lives with her husband near Atlanta, Georgia. On the banks of the North Santee River stands a moss-draped oak that was once entrusted with the dreams of three young girls. Into the tree's trunk, they placed their greatest hopes, written on ribbons, for safekeeping—including the most important one: Friends forever, come what may. But life can waylay the best of intentions.... Nine years ago, a humiliated Larkin Lanier fled Georgetown, South Carolina, knowing she could never go back. But when she finds out that her mother has disappeared, she realizes she has no choice but to return to the place she both loves and dreads—and to the family and friends who never stopped wishing for her to come home. Ivy, Larkin's mother, is discovered badly injured and unconscious in the burned-out wreckage of her ancestral plantation home. No one knows why Ivy was there, but as Larkin digs for answers, she uncovers secrets kept for nearly fifty years—whispers of love, sacrifice, and betrayal—that lead back to three girls on the brink of womanhood who found their friendship tested in the most heartbreaking way
Long before America was America, there was Salem. The town was a successful and busy port city, but it would become an infamous location that still causes a chill to run down our spines at the mere mention of its name. Based on my research, I would say that Salem has two main streets in its historic district that are the most haunted in the city. One is Essex Street and the other is Derby Street. Dover Castle stands on the White Cliffs of Dover in Britain. This castle was originally not much to behold, but during the reign of King Henry II, it would become a grand structure. Tunnels lie beneath the castle and are built into a cliff, making it unique among castles. This is the largest castle in the country and has been around since the 12th century. The castle was a key defense and saw wars that were revolutionary, civil, Napoleonic and great. Today, it is a tourist destination with a reputation for being haunted. The state of Kentucky is not only a place full of caves, these voids seem to exist under the entire state with the largest cave system in the world being located here. Add to the limitless possibilities of what could exist within caves, the fact that these caves are carved mostly out of limestone and you have the perfect makings for strange supernatural activity. Gold brought people to Ararat, but what it would be known for is its asylums. The Aradale Asylum would be home for the mentally ill for over a century and would feature conditions and treatments similar to other asylums around the world, most of which were not good. I had the opportunity to visit this magnificent ship recently (January 2019) and so on this episode, we revisit the history and hauntings and share our own experiences from visiting the ship. Construction on the liner began in 1930 under John Brown & Company and was named for King George V's wife Queen Mary. It would serve under various capacities over the decades and find its final home in Long Beach, California where it now serves as a hotel. Historical tours are offered as well as ghost tours and investigations. Join us as we board the Queen Mary and seek out her elusive spirits! Rome is a city that is believed to have had some kind of human existence within it for at least 10,000 years. This city would rise from a place of little stature to one of the greatest empires ever to exist. Amazing structures would be built under that empire. The Colosseum in Rome, Italy was an architectural marvel, but also a place of immense human and animal suffering. People would come from all over to witness amazing feats by human gladiators and to witness the tearing apart of other humans at the hands of wild animals. This was considered sport at that time and the remnants of this activity and the residue left behind has imprinted spiritually on The Colosseum. Tales of hauntings are rampant and this structure is said to be one of the most haunted locations in all of Italy. The Hampton Inn and Suites in Birmingham is an upscale hotel with a long history. This is the former Tutwiler Hotel and the former Ridgely Apartments. This was not the original Tutwiler Hotel. That one was built in 1914 on a different spot and eventually demolished in 1974. The Tutwiler was built in a grandiose style to attract the steel industry to come to town for conventions. This worked and Birmingham soon became a convention destination. The city felt the loss of the hotel when it was demolished and so it was decided to renovate the historic luxury Ridgely Apartments and reopen it as the new Tutwiler Hotel. And it is this location where the namesake for the hotel is reputedly still hanging around in the afterlife. Join me as we explore the history and hauntings of the Tutwiler Hotel. We also have three listener stories to share! Moment in Oddity was suggested by John Michaels and features Alien Hand Syndrome and This Month in History features Zulu War Begins. The House of the Seven Gables is a gothic novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne featuring a real home in Salem, Massachusetts that he knew well. The story has ghosts as some of the characters and that seems true to life as well since there are many people who claim that the home is haunted. Join me as we explore the beliefs of Nathaniel Hawthorne and the history and hauntings of The House of the Seven Gables! The Moment in Oddity was suggested by Kim Gasiorowski and features three cages on St. Lamberti Church spire and This Month in History features Unabomber killing first victim. Welcome to the 10th episode of Feathers and Foes. Can you believe it! 10 episodes. And this episode is a doozy. Perhaps it is not a doozy. To be honest, I don't even know what would constitute a doozy. In this episode, we are covering issue 1 proper of Birds of Prey. The story is called Long Time Gone written by Chuck Dixon and illustrated by Greg Land, and inked by Drew Geraci. Black Canary and Oracle are in top form. Please don't forget to listen to our segment about the Birds of Prey television show from the WB television series back in 2002.

Good luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: The first story this week is about Led Zeppelin. If you think you’ve heard everything that Led Zeppelin have ever done, Robert Plant is here to tell you that you’re wrong. The blues-rock icon told reporters on BBC Radio that he had recently unearthed some old Led Zeppelin recordings that have yet to be heard by anyone but the band themselves. Plant said he discovered the tapes with Jimmy Page while the two were working on remastering the band’s catalog. Plant said that a few of these newly discovered recordings might make it on to the remastered Zeppelin albums, but he joked that Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones would give “two cars and a greenhouse” to make sure that some of the tapes that feature Jones on lead vocals never see the light of day. e-more@elmoremagazine.com In what may be the most unlikely collaboration ever, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones are teaming up for a duets album in tribute to the Everly Brothers. Titled Foreverly, the album consists of renditions of traditional folk songs that appeared on the Everlys’ 1958 album Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. The first song from their collaboration, “Long Time Gone,” can be heard on BillieJoeandNorah.com. The album comes out on November 25th. e-more@elmoremagazine.com With the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' arrival in the U.S. coming in February, expect a wonderful barrage of black-and-white clips from the height of Beatlemania, set to a soundtrack of piercing screams. Largely buried under the gleeful cries of teenagers now old enough to share tales of seeing John, Paul, George and Ringo with their grandchildren is the music that ignited the frenzy. We'll get another kind of reminder of how powerful a live band the Beatles could be – sans the screams – with Monday’s release of “On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2.” The double CD, with 37 Beatles classics and covers, and lots of radio-show banter, comes 19 years after the first volume offered a fresh look – and listen – at the greatest pop band of them all. The song list is largely familiar, drawing from tunes the Beatles recorded for studio albums, and, to an extent, the previous compilation of BBC radio appearances. But part of the magic of the group's enduring hold across generations rests in music that sounds as new as the day it was recorded. Every version marks another gem for fans, with something different to discover, even in songs we’ve heard countless times. http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/entertainment/entertainment-news/A-New-Live-for-the-Beatles--231170551.html Speaking of the Beatles: Ringo's 'Photograph' Throughout the Beatles years, Ringo Starr was often photographed toting a camera – but he thought the pictures he shot had been lost forever. "We finally found them in a basement in storage," he says. "I was shocked. We even found two books of negatives. Who thought I was that tidy?” Now a new book, Photograph (Genesis Publications), collects his photos, plus tons of unseen images of Starr and his bandmates. Many of the photos — stemming from his childhood to his earliest days in the Beatles to candid backstage and in studio shots — have never been seen anywhere. The book is out now http://www.rollingstone.com/music/pictures/ringo-starrs-lost-beatles-photo-album-20131108#ixzz2kLuOZEIe Blues In The Area: 11/15 FRIDAY The Christopher Dean Band - Theodores' - Springfield, MA EasyBaby - The Stonehouse (9:15pm) - Baltic, CT Dan Stevens - La Luna (5pm) - Mystic, CT Brandt Taylor - Sherwood's (9pm) - Woodstock, CT 11/16 SATURDAY Delbert McClinton - Infinity Music Hall (8pm) - Norfolk, CT The Tarbox Ramblers / Girls, Guns & Glory - Cafe Nine (8pm) - New Haven, CT Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers - Black-eyed Sally's (9pm) - Hartford The Rich Badowski Blues Band - Gibson's Bar & Grill - East Windsor, CT Dan Stevens - Guitar Workshop at Nightingale Cafe (9am) - Old Lyme, CT Dan Stevens - The Crown & Hammer Pub (9pm) - Collinsville, CT Brandt Taylor - CJ Sparrow's (9pm) - Cheshire, CT Blue Devil Bluez - Theodores' (9pm) - Springfield, MA Neal Vitullo & the Vipers w/Dave Howard - Chan's - Woonsocket, RI 11/17 SUNDAY Duke Robillard - Bridge Street Live (7:30pm) - Collinsville, CT Black-Eyed Sally’s Weekly Rundown: Wednesday Nov 13 Blues Open Mic hosted by Friday Nov 15 Michael Cleary Band Saturday Nov 16 Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers Monday Nov 18 Monday Night Jazz featured artist Tuesday Nov 19 Mike Palin’s Other Orchestra I hope to see you out and about this week but if not please continue to support live music wherever you are. subscribe-with-itunes-button
DARRELL SCOTT is a songwriter, acclaimed performer and recording artist. As a songwriter, he's contributed a string of hits that reads like a list of the best modern country music has to offer. There's the Grammy Award winning "Long Time Gone" and "Heartbreak Town," both top hits for the Dixie Chicks. "Great Day to be Alive" helped Travis Tritt complete his comeback; "Born to Fly" was a No. 1 hit for Sara Evans, while "Family Tree" was successful for Darryl Worley and "When No One's Around" extended Garth Brooks' run. Darrell returns to WoodSongs with a brand new double CD "A Crooked Road" before he hits the road for a string of dates with Robert Plant (yes, the Led Zepplin guy). EVIE LADIN plays old-time banjo. Listen and you can hear the whomp and jive of the genre's Appalachian heritage. You also hear the instrument's African roots. Now listen to Evie's genteel voice and lyrics and you hear the push and pull of life, you hear real, contemporary stories. Evie is known to music fans as a driving force behind San Francisco's all-gal old-time group the Stairwell Sisters. Based in Oakland, CA, is has just released her debut CD "Float Downstream."
