There's swearing. There's nostalgia. And there's the kind of playlist that makes you want to dig out your old plaid pants and jump in a mosh pit. This is part 7 of the Read the Bible For Yourself. The Bible contains a treasure trove of wisdom literature that can help you navigate the ups and downs of life. Today you'll learn how to read and understand the books of Proverbs, Song of Songs, Job, and Ecclesiastes. Proverbs and Song of Songs teach us how to handle ourselves when the world is working the way it should while Job and Ecclesiastes address how to think and live when chaos strikes. Taken together these four books offer a full-orbed perspective on practical wisdom that you can incorporate into your life. They show the way life works best 80 to 95 percent of the time. The Bible is clear throughout Scripture: if you live a life oriented to God, you will tend to have a good life.”[1] Proverbs 14:7: Leave the presence of a fool, for there you do not find words of knowledge. The Fool Mouth of a fool brings ruin near (10:14) Utters slander (10:18) Doing wrong for fun (10:23) Broadcasts folly (12:23) No restraint, careless (14:16) Despises parent's instruction (15:5) Does not receive a rebuke (17:10) Has plenty of personal opinions (18:2) Perverse speech (19:1) Quick to quarrel (20:3) Devours wealth (21:20) Despises wise words (23:9) Vents anger (29:11) Hasty in speech (29:20) The Wise Honoring your parents (1:8-9; 10:1) Handling money well, avoiding debt (3:9-10; 22:7 Discernment between right and wrong (3:21; 10:9; 28:5) Understanding (3:13; 4:7; 18:2) Fidelity in marriage (5:15-19; 6:32-35) Hard work instead of laziness (6:6-11; 15:19) Fearing the LORD (9:10; 24:21; 31:30) Teachability, humility (9:9; 11:2) Controlling what you say (10:19; 21:23) Righteousness, honesty, morality (11:3; 12:22; 29:6) Generosity (11:25; 19:17; 22:9) Choosing good friends (12:26; 13:20) Disciplining children (13:24; 22:15) Patience, slow to anger (14:29; 15:18) Self-control (16:32; 25:28; 29:11) Song of Songs This collection of romantic poems is a commentary on Proverbs 5:18-19 The focus of the book is a woman who pursues and fantasizers about romantic love. Her speech begins the book (1:5-6), ends the book, and utters the key truth of the book (8:6-7). Far from relegating women to a passive role, Song of Songs affirms a woman's desires and her pursuit of them. She does not ignore that her body has yearnings, nor is she ashamed of them.  Our heroine knows who she is; she's in touch with her sexuality.  She goes after him, attempting to woo him with her charms.  Over and again, the two get separated, and one searches for the other until they find each other, panting with desire.  Then, the section abruptly ends, and the two find themselves apart again, ready to repeat the cycle.  “This poem should be read in light of Genesis 1 and 2. Following the command to “be fruitful and increase in number” (Gen 1:28), God plants a garden (2:8) in which he placed the man and woman he created in his own image. The narrative concludes with the words: “A man will … be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame” (2:24-25, emphasis added). The picture of sexual love in this book recaptures that scene, where the woman and the man take utter delight and pleasure in each other's bodies and do so without shame. This is thus God's way of recapturing both the fidelity and the unity and intimacy of marriage, which the enemy has tried to take away from God's people by making it seem either titillating outside of marriage or something shameful and unmentionable within marriage.”[2] Job Job 15:20–2420 The wicked writhe in pain all their days, through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless. 21 Terrifying sounds are in their ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon them. 22 They despair of returning from darkness, and they are destined for the sword. 23 They wander abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?' They know that a day of darkness is ready at hand; 24 distress and anguish terrify them; they prevail against them like a king prepared for battle. Do the wicked “writhe in pain all their days?” No. Many wicked people are just fine. You must be careful with the book of Job. It is a philosophical treatise, dealing with the question of justice. The key question is whether Job did something wrong to deserve the calamities he experienced. The book answers with a resounding “No,” but does not explain why God allowed Job to suffer so much. Ecclesiastes Ecclesiastes 9:11–1211 Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful, but time and chance happen to them all. 12 For no one can anticipate one's time. Like fish taken in a cruel net or like birds caught in a snare, so mortals are snared at a time of calamity, when it suddenly falls upon them. “Vanity” הֶבֶל hevel (38x) is the key word in Ecclesiastes. Vapor, breath, smoke, pointless Smoke appears solid, but you can't grab it. Chasing the wind Pursuing money, success, or knowledge is hevel (temporary, fleeting). Ecclesiastes 12:13–1413 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments, for that is the whole duty of everyone. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil. Review Proverbs offers conventional truisms that generally work in an ordered world. Pursue wisdom and avoid folly. Song of Songs is an anthology of poems celebrating the delights of physical beauty, romance, and sexuality. Job disproves the notion that those who suffer calamity deserved it by sinning in some big way. Ecclesiastes bemoans the futility of pursuing wealth, success, pleasure, or even wisdom. Life is uncertain, so fear God and keep his commandments. Although ultimately all one's achievements disappear like smoke in the wind, we can enjoy the blessing of enjoying a good meal, working hard, and the delights of marriage. Conventional wisdom offers principles that generally work, whereas subversive wisdom acknowledges that chaos and catastrophe strike, resulting in the righteous suffering. Reading just one of these books limits you to a partial view of wisdom. Reading them together presents a robust understanding of how to live wisely through the complexities of life in the real world. The Fool Mouth of a fool brings ruin near (10:14) Utters slander (10:18) Doing wrong for fun (10:23) Broadcasts folly (12:23) No restraint, careless (14:16) Despises parent’s instruction (15:5) Does not receive a rebuke (17:10) Has plenty of personal opinions (18:2) Perverse speech (19:1) Quick to quarrel (20:3) Devours wealth (21:20) Despises wise words (23:9) Vents anger (29:11) Hasty in speech (29:20) The Wise Honoring your parents (1:8-9; 10:1) Handling money well, avoiding debt (3:9-10; 22:7 Discernment between right and wrong (3:21; 10:9; 28:5) Understanding (3:13; 4:7; 18:2) Fidelity in marriage (5:15-19; 6:32-35) Hard work instead of laziness (6:6-11; 15:19) Fearing the LORD (9:10; 24:21; 31:30) Teachability, humility (9:9; 11:2) Controlling what you say (10:19; 21:23) Righteousness, honesty, morality (11:3; 12:22; 29:6) Generosity (11:25; 19:17; 22:9) Choosing good friends (12:26; 13:20) Disciplining children (13:24; 22:15) Patience, slow to anger (14:29; 15:18) Self-control (16:32; 25:28; 29:11) Song of Songs This collection of romantic poems is a commentary on Proverbs 5:18-19 The focus of the book is a woman who pursues and fantasizers about romantic love. This is thus God's way of recapturing both the fidelity and the unity and intimacy of marriage, which the enemy has tried to take away from God's people by making it seem either titillating outside of marriage or something shameful and unmentionable within marriage.”[[Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart, How to Read the Bible Book by Book (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Academic, 2002), 163.]] Job Job 15:20–24 20 The wicked writhe in pain all their days, through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless. Ecclesiastes Ecclesiastes 9:11–12 11 Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful, but time and chance happen to them all. Ecclesiastes 12:13–14 13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Pierre Kezdy was a staple of the Chicago Punk scene for more than 25 years.  Beginning in the early 80's with Strike Anywhere Kezdy made his mark with his distinctive bass playing and melodic songwriting.   His work with Naked Raygun across classic albums from 1986's “All Rise” through 1990's “Rayun…Naked Raygun" would cement his legacy and joining ex-Raygun guitarist John Haggerty for several Pegboy albums further confirmed the high regard that he was held in throughout the Windy City.  We sadly lost Pierre to cancer in 2020.  He was only 58.  To celebrate his life through the music of Naked Raygun a number of Chicago area bands put together this compilation to support his late wife and children with all proceeds going to the family.  You can contribute and help support the Kezdy family by buying it on BandCamp:  https://godspeed-tribute.bandcamp.com/album/godspeed-a-tribute-to-pierre-kezdy-of-naked-raygun.  RIP Pierre.      Recommended Listening   HHPP EP16:  Naked Raygun - Complete Discography  https://huntsmanhill.com/2017/03/12/ep16-naked-raygun-complete-discography/   HHPP Spotify Track:  “Gear” by Swingin' Utters https://open.spotify.com/track/47xKxv09SoqAoIypYhrK28?si=8d06c8af7c114c5f   Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com   huntsmanhill.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRwAcademy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ Mid City Three:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/2LW7wWSHd9bi3n3Q5N8i35?si=aVFU0HdnRzqI1UOTAfc-ig

Pastor Ross preaches from Luke 22:39-46. Outline: Not My Will, But Yours, Be Done Charlotte and I have the privilege of having our grandmother live with us. Earlier this week, we were driving her to a respite home so she could stay there for the week. My wife wanted my help that morning to get her there, and we hadn't talked ahead or thought through how transporting her there would work. So, it ended up interrupting my plan for the day. Yet, I thought of a way to kind of keep to my agenda. I would bring my laptop and get the things done I had planned from the passenger seat. Yet, when I went to connect my computer to my phone's hot spot, I discovered that the new phone plan I had just switched to did not include mobile hot spot. At this moment, I was temptation towards anger and frustration. You would hope that I would respond with maturity, patience, and trust that God was in control. Instead, I become sullen and angry. I pouted the way there and the way back. My wife really said these words to me on the drive home, “it would have been better if you had not come.” I failed this test of my patience. All of us are going through different temptations of different magnitudes at this morning. Some of us are in the most difficult circumstances of your lives; others of us squabbled and fought on the way here. Whatever your temptation may be, I want to ask this morning: what is God's plan for each of us? How does he respond to our failures and how does he want to equip us to succeed? Let's pay close attention and learn from Jesus's life, 39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. Jesus has a habit: stealing away to spend time with the Father, often on an elevated place. At this moment, Jesus and his disciples reaching a low point: One of the closest followers would betray; the world would turn against; death coming. When his disciples reached for their swords, Jesus reached for his Father. What we latch onto shows where our hope lies. Hard moments test of our hearts. What we reach for, shows what our hearts are holding onto. At great moment of adversity, when disciples reached for weapons, Jesus reached for intimacy. How? “custom.” Those who consistently spend time with God go to him in hardest times. 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” He went to “the place.” Seek God in a specific place. It will help you build a habit. Jesus gives them a simple prayer. We struggle with insecurity. Jesus welcomes simplicity. What's temptation? Same word as “test.” Temptation = a hardship that allures us to go outside of the Lord for comfort or care. Example, in Luke 4, Satan “tempts” Jesus. Facing test of hunger in wilderness and devil tempts him to find refuge in food or ruling kingdoms rather than his Father. Jesus succeeds, he retreats till “the opportune time.” That was now. Danger of defecting. So, Jesus says, “pray…” Do you not find that the times when it is hardest to trust God is often when you hurt, feel sad, or vulnerable? 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, Jesus shows everyone needs time alone with the Father. If Jesus did… The way the Father becomes refuge is we spend time with him and draw comfort. We need brothers and sisters, but most of all, one on one time with our God. 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” Requests father removes cup. Cup = symbol of God's wrath. About to receive for people. Roman soldiers will nail to tree, he will hang naked, his own people will mock. For us. Request must have pierced Father's heart. Jesus shows it is not wrong to ask God to remove suffering (not calling you be more spiritual). Yet, we must not make our suffering going away a condition for trusting God. Utters some of most amazing words. Completely submits his will to his Father's. There is nothing more pleasing to the Father than the complete surrender of our wills to his will. Above all, this depicts an attitude of complete trust in his goodness. Jesus had to die to his desires to come alive to his Father's. He had to go through a death and resurrection within himself. He had to sacrifice himself before he ever sacrificed himself. God was pleased! First ancestor Adam failed his first temptation in a garden (also on a high place); Jesus, “last Adam,” a new and better Adam who does not fail like all others; Jesus on a high place that's also a garden; Adam fails in garden on high place, Jesus succeeds; Adam: “God, not your will, but mine… “Jesus, “Father, not my will, but yours…” First step towards following Jesus is not passing every temptation and presenting self as righteous; It's trusting that Jesus passed test in your place and by trusting, you get to share in his acceptance; Jesus passes the test all others fail so that all who trust in him can receive forgiveness; Do you want this? Please, even as I speak, take this step. Next verse, Jesus is human 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. The Lord takes care. God may not take away suffering, but will give everything you need. Jesus takes full humanity and weakness to show God gives strength to weak who trust. 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. If you thought Jesus superhuman, no stress, pain, or sorrow, time to rethink. Real human being with real emotions and expresses agony to the Father. Praying so earnestly, sweats like blood.[1] Where should you go when Father says no? To the Father with all your emotions. When God answers “yes” and “no” they are both invitations to go deeper with him. “No” is not a rejection, but an invitation to express your feelings. Jesus does himself does this. Understandably, Jesus wants his companions. What does he find? 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, Jesus finds his companions indifferent and disengaged.[2] Sleepiness shows their weakness, vulnerability, and susceptibility to temptation. Kind of sounds like us, doesn't it? Jesus had warned to “stay awake at all times,” and sleepiness shows their lack of vigilance. “Sleeping for sorrow” = the heaviness of the situation had sapped strength. Sadness exhausts and leaves us more vulnerable to temptation. These moments can be the hardest not to give in. Those of you overcome with sorrow or lingering in depression, don't stop praying; when you don't have energy to come up with words, use simple words, use Jesus's words. Jesus never says, “don't be sorrowful,” rather, he says, “don't stop praying.” When it's hardest to pray is often when we need to pray most. 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.” Ends with the phrase he began with. We must be real that we are prone to enter temptation. Questions: Do you find yourself spiritually sleepy this morning? Do you find yourself struggling with a particular trial, pain, hardship, or set or circumstances that's making it difficult to trust God? Do you find yourself entering into temptation? That is, wandering towards other substitutes to trusting God? Substitutes like binge consuming entertainment or alcohol, lust, or throwing yourself into work or a relationship as a distraction? Do you find yourself (intentionally or not) avoiding time being with the Father? When pressure of this life is on, we will flee to something: our flesh's tendency is from God. To add, Satan has set his sites on our faith and is doing all in his power to lead us into temptation. You can see why Jesus says to “pray…” Yet, I have good news: While Satan has a plan to destroy our faith; Jesus has a greater plan to keep us. When Jesus prays, “not my will, but yours…” He was not only succeeding for us in our place, he was also showing us the way we too can succeed in our temptations like he did. Depends on first word, “Father.” (Father= good and wise). If he did not see his Father this way, he could not utter these next words, Nevertheless… We join Jesus in calling God “Father,” from our hearts, as seeing him as better and wiser than our own selves and own judgement. When we finally see God as greater than ourselves, then it's possible for us to say, “not my will, but yours, be done.” During ministry, received a cut to my finger. Temptation: regret trying to minister in this situation, harboring frustration against God for not protecting me. I have to have a low view of God first, that he doesn't have a good and wise plan in this set of circumstances to enter into temptation. A high view of God's character is mine and your pathway out of temptation. No better example than Jesus on the cross. Things never looked bleaker for Jesus and for the world. This moment above all, he faced temptation to have a small view of God and disobey him for the first time. Yet, since he did not succumb to temptation, now he sits at the father's right hand, now his global people worship him, soon he will come back and rule over all the nations. In the same way, there are such good things in store for us if we will believe God is wiser and better than us, and rather than entering into temptation will say, “not my will, but yours, be done.” How will we become a church that enjoys God's presence, sees people get baptized, grows into deep and loving family? In our hardships, rather than shrinking back from God, saying “not my will, but yours, be done.” Pray: As we move toward a time of reflection, where is that one area you are struggling to say, “not my will, but yours, be done”? It may be singleness, infertility, a bodily alignment, a financial situation, or relational brokenness. Please spend time praying: Lord, lead me not into temptation and Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done. Benediction: 20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Independent journalist and co-host of the 'Habibi Brothers' podcast, Siraj Hashmi, joins Ryan to discuss the inane and insane comments from those on the Left commemorating one year since the Capitol Hill riots of January 6th. He also goes in-depth on a political movement in search for a home in America, people who love liberty and limited government more than the Republican Party itself is able to provide. Also, Vice President Kamala Harris utters a word - 'malaise' - that many cite as the beginning of the end for President Jimmy Carter's re-election prospects in 1980.
