Ann Wolfe is the Chief Curator at the Nevada Museum of Art, the only art museum in the state of Nevada accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Collaborating with paleontologist Dr. Martin Sander, she has co-curated a new exhibition at the museum titled "Deep Time: Sea Dragons of Nevada." You might know these Sea Dragons by their actual name- Ichthyosaur. On this week's episode of Renoites, Ann join Conor to discuss the exhibition and how it was created, the process of combining arts and science in museum exhibitions, working with artifacts and fossils millions of years old, the important scientists who have spearheaded expeditions into the Nevada desert, as well as the more art-focused elements of the exhibition including an 85 foot digital "point cloud" projection, a collection of thousands of dinosaur toys from around the world (note: Ichthyosaurs aren't dinosaurs!), and even the art gracing the cans of a local favorite beer, Icky IPA by Great Basin Brewing. In addition to the current exhibition, Conor and Ann discussed the importance of Land Art to the state of Nevada, including Michael Heizer's "City," a land art piece spanning over a mile of the Nevada desert and taking decades to complete, and the "Seven Magic Mountains" installation- currently a major tourist destination in Las Vegas but which is now planned to be relocated here to Northern Nevada. Land art, the movement which emerged in the 1960s and 70s with artists such as Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, and Michael Heizer erecting monumental works in far-flung destinations, is widely regarded for its engagement with the environment and its elements. These remarkable installations are crafted in concert with the Earth, meant to evolve as sun, storms, and seasons weather them continuously over time. But what if you homed in on the core of this concept, creating sweeping land artworks in ways and places where they would be truly temporary, imprints made for a moment before disappearing back into the Earth? This is the crux of California-based artist Jim Denevan's dynamic practice, which involves interacting with topographies and terrains to craft ephemeral compositions that play with the impermanence of our ever-changing world. Since the mid-1990s, Denevan has traversed the globe creating unfathomably massive works in sand, earth, and ice, often using no more than a rake, stick, or even the soles of his feet. He has etched miles-long Fibonacci circles in Siberia's frozen Lake Baikal, drawn shore-spanning spirals in San Francisco's Ocean Beach, and sculpted concentric rings of sand mounds at international public art exhibitions Desert X AlUla in Saudi Arabia and Manar Abu Dhabi. His work has been featured in institutional shows at MoMA PS1, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, as well as the Oscar long-listed documentary Man in the Field, which explored Denevan's artistic career and his culinary trajectory as the founder of Outstanding in the Field, a roving restaurant set where food is sourced to connect diners with the origins of their meals. This spring, Artnet collaborated with Denevan on an original project, titled “You Only Live Once,” showcasing the all-new 2024 Lexus GX alongside the artist bringing to life an incredible land artwork in Lake Harper north of Los Angeles. Taking the shape of the universal number “1,” the more than quarter-mile piece is a dramatic testament to making the most of our time on this Earth by confidently pursuing our curiosities and drive for adventure.

Season two kicks off with Jarl Mohn, my former boss at E! Entertainment Television and retired CEO of NPR. Jarl Mohn describes the evolution of his fascinating career in the media industry -- that stemmed from his experience in a group home as a child and a love of radio as his escape. Our focal points were social justice issues in LA County, the importance of the arts and emerging artists in LA, and Jarl Mohn's personal art collection, including a three and a quarter ton Michael Heizer rock. We get a pro tip on how to open up our minds and creativity by looking at art! Jarl also explains his belief in the unique value of public radio today, as well as the importance of good content across all media platforms in a world of subscription competition. We discuss the progress and challenges of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the media industry, the value of good content marketing and the power of good communication and relationship-building by executives.  To wrap it up, you'll learn the funny story behind the internet sensation of socks featuring Jarl's face! So, this is a true head to toe interview with one of the best in the business.  This is an edited version of an episode of my podcast, "Insider Interviews" in which Jarl focused more on the business of media. For It's Quite a Living, I'm including extra content about his personal side, including more on his experience in foster care, coinciding with National Foster Care Month. Whether or not yours is QUITE the living, this is a celebration of those who lead fulfilling lives and enjoy every moment. Show Notes for Episode of "It's Quite a Living" with Host, E.B. Moss, and former CEO of NPR and philanthropist, Jarl Mohn: [00:02:11] E.B. Moss reminisces about Jarl starting E! Entertainment Television. [00:02:23] Jarl shares his career journey that got him there, starting as a disc jockey, meeting Bob Pittman (current CEO, iHeartMedia) and transitioning into the cable TV industry via MTV with Bob, then helming E! [00:04:10] Jarl shares more about his challenging upbringing in foster care (just as other successful individuals like Steve Jobs and Tiffany Haddish found their way to success. Recommended reading: "A Place Called Home", the memoir of current Amazon executive and foster youth advocate, David Ambroz [00:06:29] Jarl reflects on his traumatic experience in a children's home and how his love for radio provided an escape. Randall Rothenberg of IAB interviewing Jarl Mohn (NPR) and Bob Pittman (iHeartMedia)               [00:09:29] E.B. Moss recalls Jarl's humanizing approach as CEO of Entertainment Television and the lasting impact it had on employees. [00:10:42] Jarl discusses his travels with Michael Govin, visiting NPR stations across the country, fostering connections, and gaining insight into local communities. [00:13:11] Jarl expresses his appreciation for the unique value of public radio and its storytelling capabilities, while acknowledging challenges in the music format. [00:14:30] E.B. mentions Jarl's gift to all 251 NPR member stations, for which he received a mug from each station that have garnered attention on Instagram -- and from visitors to his home where they are all proudly displayed. [00:15:05] E.B. notes Jarl's passion for traditional media and the increasing popularity of streaming services, prompting a discussion on the importance of quality content across different mediums. [00:16:36] E.B. asks Jarl about the progress made by the media industry regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Jarl emphasizes the importance of these issues in various sectors, including the arts. [00:18:21] Jarl describes his philanthropic efforts, focusing on social justice and the arts in Los Angeles County. He mentions collaborations with organizations like the ACLU,

For part two of our discussion of Michael Heizer's 'City,' Kris asks the question: what makes a city a city? Is the city's purpose tied into the "feel" of it? Are people the main component, or are cities built first, with the intention of herding people around? This is a great critique of Heizer's massive project, the first of its kind that I've ever seen. We also talk the origins of "beaver" as a euphemism, the City Museum of St. Louis, the credo of the Space Family Robinson, and "antonym therapy." David is tasked with taking us on a journey to a Mythic Destination in America...it involves apple pie and the descendants of Paul Bunyan.

It gives a new intensity and expression to post-industrial objects grounded within our relationships to life. “Everything has a cycle,” says King. “Ideas evolve, visions fade, and societies move on.”King and I discuss success and failure, creative technology, and his influences. With influences from Christian Boltanski, Michael Heizer, and Tom Friedman, King's artwork challenges the viewer to pay attention and to explore outside the confines of the traditional art space.https://www.facebook.com/dallasaurorahttps://www.instagram.com/dallasaurora/https://www.joshuakingart.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshuakingart/Run time: 39 minutesHost, Earlina Green Hamilton

Russell & Robert meet leading documentary and fashion photographer Jamie Hawkesworth. We discuss Milton Avery, forensic photography, the power of natural light, a dedication to analogue cameras, taking Kate Moss’ portrait in India and documenting landscapes of Antarctica. We learn about Jamie’s early project 'Preston Bus Station' and explore his later collaborations with JW Anderson for Loewe and exhibitions at The Hepworth Wakefield and Huis Marseille, Amsterdam; the latter showing a mix of his personal as well as his commercial photography. Jamie reveals his admiration for photographers William Christenberry, Jem Southam & William Eggleston and for land artist Michael Heizer - who invited Jamie to take his portrait in the Nevada desert at Heizer’s mythical, monumental, as-yet-unseen 'City' (an ongoing land artwork that began in 1972 and will finally be publicly opened in 2020).
