How leaders must communicate: Andy Bounds

Your Intended Message

A leader needs to communicate on many levels What must leaders learn about communication? Episode 175 (Andy is based in the UK) In this conversation with Andy Bounds we explore: Critical communications lesson from his blind mother The preparation technique of "guess and ask" What's more important than your intended message Why the message is simply part of the process How to cater your road show presentation to different audiences The power of changing the subtitle on your opening slide Why your message starts with the desired outcomes Why follow-up is crucial to achieving the end goal The four steps to achieve the goal About our guest, Andy Bounds:   Award winning sales consultant – Andy was voted the UK's Sales Trainer of the Year, as a result of all the sales that I helped my clients win (over $35billion so far)   Best-selling author – his three books on leadership communication and sales are all international best sellers.  In fact, the first of them was only kept off the Amazon #1 slot by the final Harry Potter book!   Blind mother – his mum is blind.  This has given Andy a lifetime's experience of communicating from the other person's point of view. A critical skill for leaders to master – especially since others who are blind to what they are trying to achieve! ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Andy Bounds: There is a wonderful quote by the Irish author, George George Bernard Shaw. And he said, the single biggest illusion with communication is the fact that it has taken place. In other words, let's use simpler language, the biggest mistake people make is they think they've done the communication so it's finished. Okay, or they do a 20 minute events and think that will change everybody for the next year. The world doesn't work that way. Yeah, bluntly, habits are long term things. And communication is a short term thing. So we need rigorous reinforcement. And that's another thing when I'm talking with leaders and how we're going to reinforce things, I say, what are the questions you're going to relentlessly ask? So make sure people have adopted the new strategy? So let's say we have a new strategy, and it's going to be I don't know, we're going to speak to our customers more? Well, the leader needs to ask their team almost every single time they see them. How many customers have you contacted this week? Every time so as you walk towards me, I want you thinking Andy's going to ask me how many customers I've contact because he always does. There has to be this relentless, consistent follow up. Because as a leader, if you ignore that behaviour, you empower it, right? If you ignore that behaviour, you empower it. So if someone doesn't do what you want, if you ignore that, you're empowering them not to do what you want. So you have to continually reinforce it, use charm, be persuasive, but you can't just ignore it. Otherwise, you're saying you just carry on. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills. We'll examine the aspects of how we communicate one-to-one, one to few and one to many – plus that important conversation, one to self. In these interviews we will explore presentation skills, public speaking, conversation, persuasion, negotiation, sales conversations, marketing, team meetings, social media, branding, self talk and more.   Your host is George Torok George is a specialist in communication skills. Ladey Adey talks with Andy Bounds.Andy was awarded the title of 'Britain's Sales Trainer of the Year', and described by Astra Zeneca's Global Communication Director as “a genius, whose advice can't be ignored”. Andy's insights and passion stem from the fact his Mother is blind. This has given him a lifetime's experience in communicating from someone else's point of view, a critical skill to master when persuading others. Andy's three books are all international best-sellers, The Jelly Effect, The Snowball Effect and TOP Dog: Impress and Influence Everyone You Meet - the latter co-authored with Richard Ruttle. The first was only kept off Amazon's #1 spot by Harry Potter! In this episode, we primarily talk about TOP DOG: Impress and Influence Everyone You Meet. Andy's Tips: Writing:Find your “Active brain” time – write when your brain is at its best. For me, that's early morning. So I block out time early morning to write! The rest of my life has to fit around these diarised writing slots. Read it aloud – when you've finished writing a section, read it out loud to yourself. When you hear your writing, you'll instantly be able to tell if it sounds punchy and pacey. This works much better than just skim reading with your eyes. Never say “I think” – first-time authors can – very understandably – feel uncomfortable with stating their opinions forcefully. So they often use phrases like “I think” – for example: “I think there are four steps to a great networking conversation”. Remove these uncertain phrases – no reader wants to see a writer/expert who hedges their bets. A better example: “There are four steps to a great networking conversation” reads much better.Reading tips: Note down great ideas – when you read a great idea, don't just nod your head, think how wise it is, and assume you'll automatically use it for the rest of your life. You won't. So make a note of it somewhere, and then use it immediately bust guts to use this new technique in the next 24 hours. If you don't do it immediately after seeing it, it's unlikely to magically happen in the futureAndy's favourite quote: “First, forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable–it will sustain you whether you are inspired or not”. Octavia Butler, author."I love this quote because it reminds me that the thing that dictates my level of long-term success are the habits I get into. It's relatively easy to be inspired–find someone inspiring, and listen to them. But their inspiration isn't going to change your life three years later. Whereas, if you change your habits so you'll automatically do the right thing, that will change your life" Andy's thoughts.Andy Bounds: https://www.andybounds.com/Book: TOP DOG: Impress and Influence Everyone You Meet. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Top-Dog-Influence-Everyone-Paperback/dp/B015YMKROW/ Ladey Adey: https://www.ladeyadey.com/ Book Academy: https://www.ladeyadey.com/the-book-academy/ Vicky Galbraith - Podcast VA - www.podcastva.co.uk Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/ladeyadeyshow. In this episode, Pete speaks to Andy Bounds. Andy helps his customers to sell more and communicate better, he has won awards and written books too! Andy’s mother is blind and it meant that he got very good at explaining things to others that didn’t see the world in the same way he did. KEY TAKEAWAYS  Andy has felt fire in his belly throughout all of lockdown because of the importance of communication and being unable to do it in the same way. Some of our senses are diminished so we are having to heighten others. Those who may have winged it in a work setting is unable to do so now. You can ‘get away’ with less, you need to be extra prepared for meetings. When you’re going into a virtual meeting, don’t just prepare what you are talking about but think of good questions too so you can ensure the other people contribute. You can judge how communication has worked by looking at what happens after it. For example, if you think you have done an excellent, thorough email but the person who sees it thinks it’s too long so doesn’t read it, it means you may have thought you have done something fantastic but what happened after isn’t what you wanted. The first thing you need to do before initiating communication (e.g. sending an email or making a phone call) is figure out what ‘working communication’ would be in each scenario. Think about how to make both parties happy with communication, be empathetic, be kind and use a channel you are both happy with. Fire in the belly to Andy is making sure communication works for everyone. So many people don’t know how to be interesting, it’s not difficult they just need to know how to communicate effectively with different types of people. Other people love it when you can remember what is important to them. Do whatever you need to facilitate this. Andy is passionately ‘nerdily’, ‘geekily’ interested in other people’s views from things which he gets from his mum and dad. BEST MOMENTS  “Things you may have got away with once you really can’t now so you gotta raise your game” “Communication is always about whether it’s worked or not” “The other person is often blind to your world view” “I hate selfish communication” “If it doesn’t sound like you then it won’t sound like you when you say it”  “There is no universal truth only perspective”   VALUABLE RESOURCES Subscribe to Fire In The Belly Podcast on Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fire-in-the-belly/id1499375061) ABOUT THE GUEST Andy Bounds  https://www.andybounds.com/   ABOUT THE HOST The ‘Mighty Pete Lonton’ from the ‘Mighty 247’ company is your main host of ‘Fire In The Belly’.  Pete is an Entrepreneur, Mentor, Coach, Property Investor, and father of 3 beautiful girls. According to Andy Bounds, Walt Disney stayed focused on positive outcomes. When asked if Disneyland could be built, everyone else said, “No, because…” but Walt would always answer, “Yes, if…” Yes, if we get someone else to pay for it. Yes, if we hire the world's best experts to build it. Yes, if we locate it somewhere that's hot all year. Yes, if we get transport links. Yes, if… How many questions could we be answering with “Yes, if…”? As I said, optimism is about staying focused on positive outcomes. But optimism isn't the secret of happiness. The secret of happiness is learning to celebrate the ordinary. No one knew this better than Tom T. Hall. I love little baby ducks, old pick-up trucks, slow movin' trains… And rain. I love little country streams, sleep without dreams, Sunday school in May… And hay. And I love you, too. I love leaves in the wind, pictures of my friends, birds of the world… And squirrels. I love winners when they cry, losers when they try, music when it's good… And life. And I love you, too. How many ordinary things do you love?Wouldn't this be a great time to celebrate them? Jeffrey Mosher welcomes Dave Heisey back to the MBN studios to discuss another Crestcom module. For January's recording - discussing an important communication technique to create a shared understanding. How many of us have asked our employees to do something only to see the results not what we had envisioned? Everybody has their hand raised, right? It’s a very common issue, and the problem is reflected in the George Bernard Shaw's quote: "The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." Andy Bounds is our Crestcom faculty member with expertise in communication, and has been voted Britain’s Sales Trainer of the Year. He talks about creating the big picture vision of what you hope to accomplish by focusing beyond the “thing” you want, to what the AFTER’s of that thing are. A couple of examples - lot’s of people buy newspapers every day, but nobody really wants a newspaper. They want the news, or the sports or the comics. And nobody wants toothpaste, they want cleaner teeth or fresher breath. So when you ask for a report, you don’t really want the report, you want what you can do with the report (keep up on team progress, understand vendor performance, understand financial performance, etc…). There are questions you can ask of yourself, and that you can train your team to ask, that will help both you and them focus on the AFTER’s of any request that you might make. Listen to Jeffrey and Dave discuss AFTER’s and how and why this skill is essential for leaders at all levels of your organization.

In Episode 7 of Season 3, we address: The weather for entrepreneurs & startups can be unpleasant Should business people pretend they're feeling great when they aren't? Is it better to be "authentic" or always have your best face forward? Should podcasts be perfect or should they (sometimes) show bad humour? Why Paul felt like flagellating in the corner - not flatulating Is 'real' communication better than 'consistent' communication? A story from days of corporate culture transformation in London How mistakes in customer service & recovering well can deepen rapport Is it wise to make deliberate cock-ups & recover with style? Deliberate breakdown of coach, sweets, replacement coach & refund Word-of-mouth marketing is powerful Most apologies are insincere & fake How to apologise to a customer Human connections - make yourself 'vulnerable' Dreadful pints of Guinness are served Customers have crap days - may empathise with you - sometimes If you're a miserable git all the time - or a misery gut occasionally When your default setting is "miserable" Humans have bad days The challenge is to explain in an impressive way You don't have to beat yourself up when you let yourself down Don't hiss at the cat, bark at the dog & let everyone have it There are more stories From the days of corporate transformation in London Transport (13.10) Making Mistakes in customer service & recovering well deepens rapport Deliberate cock-ups are tricky If you breakdown, hand out sweets, provide replacement coach + refund Word-of-mouth marketing works A Richard Branson story - heard from Dinah Liversidge Virgin Airways destroyed wheelchair - what they did to make it up to her Unequivocal apology - no mincing words Richard Branson phoned her - maybe from a balloon Dina got the Rolls Royce of wheelchairs She switched her custom from British Airways to Virgin Atlantic How many have heard that story? People who get lousy customer service Dinah decided she didn't want to be paralysed anymore It's great when you overcome extraordinary disabilities Andy Bounds, blind, turned that into 'Clearer Communications' business It's good to design buses for people with disabilities - it helps everyone Exceptionally clear communications impress & lead to loyalty

"Una and Friends" Internet Radio Show*********************************************7 April 09 topic: “From No Work to Network” with special guest, Niri Patel of BNI. Only a few years ago, relocating meant that Niri had to start from scratch with his coaching and training business. Now, Niri is Executive Director of three BNI regions in the UK and Co-National Director, BNI India. (BNI is an international business referral organisation.) How did he get from there to here? Highly regarded by myself and anyone I’ve ever met that knows him, Niri is going to share with us some of his story, challenges and lessons learned along the way in business and life. One of Niri’s goals is to create 1,000 BNI millionaires. He is a contributor to a couple of books, has spoken at the House of Lords, is an expert in coaching, wellness and is a qualified “Egoscue Method” Posture Specialist. I believe the combination of Niri’s extensive knowledge and cheeky, yet wry sense of humour means we’re in for an abundant treat! FYI: The BNI Annual Conference is open to non-members and keynote speakers. Allan Pease, an expert in body language and author of eight books including: '’Why Men Don't Listen & Women Can't Read Maps", is one of the highlighted speakers. I've listened to an audio by Allan Pease and it was very funny and right on the button. Andy Bounds, a previous guest on the show, is also speaking.
