On this very special Veterans Day and Marine Corps Birthday episode of the Stubbornly Positive Podcast, Nora and Craig reflect on Schmalls Fest and what it means to them as they prepare for the 10th annual fundraiser. Justin Schmalstieg and Sean Osterman went above and beyond for their fellow Marines on December 14-15th. Their actions are the inspiration for this meaningful event. To enhance the perspective of this episode, Ysa Rubio, Justin's partner and recently retired Master Sergeant rejoins the podcast. Ysa is an incredible person and a great storyteller who digs deep as he recalls his friendship with Justin. Tune in to celebrate the lives of Justin and Sean and all those who've left us too soon.
I have embarked on a mission to interview every Marine from the Charlie Company 1/6 sphere. Nunn and Oster are two Marines with whom I served daily between 1993-97. I remember them well and we've kept in touch over the years, periodically getting together for the Marine Corps Birthday. In this podcast, my brothers and I discuss the early days of C1/6 2nd Platoon as we approached deployment to the Mediterranean with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). Topics covered include the leadership, training, food and drink, tomfoolery, ports of call, liberty etc. Please jack up the volume so you can hear my brothers clearly. Semper Fidelis OB
This week's guest is boxing promoter Michael Reyes from Reyes Boxing Promotions. We discuss the state of boxing, getting promoters together to evolve the sport, a year in review for his company, his top prospects and Thanksgiving plans for this week. Reyes is also a Marine Veteran and we briefly get into that as November not only hosts Veteran's Day but also the Marine Corps Birthday.
Happy Birthday to me!

Freedom of speech is so important, because if we stifle others from saying what we don't agree with we limit our potential for learning, sharing, and growing. Freedom of speech also doesn't mean that you can't face consequences of being a jerk. If you'd like to talk about Taylor Swift's Eras show, or any of the things I discussed in this podcast, let me know. Let's talk about Loki2 and the unraveling of time and space, or Across The Spiderverse, or The Fall of the House of Usher. Happy Birthday Marines, and Happy Veteran's Day. Hello again and welcome back to the show. We're glad to be back with you after a couple weeks of Trail-blazing around the countryside. Cathy and I were in Asheville, North Carolina last week for a long weekend with my Uncle Stephen and his partner Richard. We had a great time and we thank you both for a great weekend. The 8 hour drive was incredible and the fall foliage was also amazing. Aside from seeing some great sites and eating some great food my favorite part of the trip was the conversations. I always have such a great time talking with my Uncles and learning things about my family that I didn't know. We jump into the subject of Marriage Equality and the vote in the Senate that passed by a 62-37 vote and will become law sometime next week. It's a damn shame that in 2022 we are still talking about Equality and Gay marriage and inter-racial marriage. Hope this new law will put it to rest and people can just love each other. Our next topic could be a little sensitive to some so "Beware". We talk about Dave Chappelle being on Saturday Night Live which leads into Kyrie Irving and his situation with the NBA and the film Hebrew To Negroes. We also get into some things that we have been watching since our time of and I personally want to praise Black Panther Wakanda Forever. It was a great movie and everyone should see it. There are some other things that I talk about as well on the watch list but also we missed The Marine Corps Birthday and Veterans Day celebrations for Happy Birthday and Veterans day from an old Marine. A quick conversation about the upcoming holiday and eating healthy and spending time with family. Enjoy the show and we hope to see you all next episode. *Warning: the points and opinion in this show are my opinion and mine alone. I hope we can discuss things if you disagree.

Join Shaner as he celebrates the Marine Corps Birthday, honors Veterans Day and discusses one of the most iconic Marines ever, Dan Daly, a legendary badass.Daniel Joseph Daly was born on November 11, 1873 in Glen Cove, New York. By size, he was 5 ft 6 in and weighed 132 lbs but established himself as an amateurboxer. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on January 10, 1899. Daly joined the Marine Corps hoping to fight in the Spanish-American War however, the war ended while he was going through training at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.Although he missed the Spanish-American War, he saw combat in China, Haiti and in France during WWI. Daly was one of two Marines to receive the Medal of Honor for two separate combat engagements. The other Marine was Major General Smedley Butler, whom we highlighted in our 5th episode. They served together in a few locations and Butler described Daly as "The fightin'est Marine I ever knew!" Daly was reportedly offered an officer's commission twice to which he responded that he would rather be "an outstanding sergeant than just another officer."

Welcome to November 10th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the sweet life and the military branch that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War. These days everyone could use a little sweetness. And what is sweeter than a personal sized vanilla cake with some buttercream and sprinkles? In fact the bakery known as Sprinkles tapped a trend that has continued to this day with their Los Angeles bakery that opened in 2005. The first recipe for cupcakes appeared in 1796 in Amelia Simmons' “American Cookery,” and little did she know that chef Candace Nelson would eventually open a cupcake ATM in 2012 with Sprinkles bakeries from coast to coast. Have you guys seen the one in the Las Vegas airport? On National Vanilla Cupcake Day it has never been easier to celebrate the sweet life. After a few defeats at the hands of British forces, George Washington had requested troops that could fight on both land and sea. On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to create two Battalions of Marines to serve with the Continental Army and these men changed the course of the Revolutionary War. Their first major test came when they landed on hostile shores in the Bahamas and captured New Providence Island. As a result, Captain Samuel Nicholas became the first commissioned officer in the Continental Marines and is celebrated as the Marines first commandant. On the Marine Corps Birthday we celebrate those who are always loyal to each other, their country and their traditions. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. In the battle for Iwo Jima, 7000 marines were killed and 20,000 wounded. From az central: It's an image seared into the American consciousness. After four days of fierce fighting on the tiny Pacific island of Iwo Jima during World War II, part of the United States' “island hopping” strategy to defeat the Japanese after retaking the Philippines, six U.S. Marines climb the highest peak of the 8-square-mile outpost and plant an American flag. One helmet-clad Marine holds the post in place amid the rubble, while the others thrust the stars and stripes toward the smoke- and cloud-pocked sky; a triumphant moment captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. The photo would publish nationwide to great fanfare two days later on Sunday, Feb. 25, 1945, and prove that, yes, we can win the war. Rosenthal would later win a Pulitzer Prize for Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, and the U.S. Postal Service would affix the image on a 3-cent stamp. From my author website: November 10, 1969 I was sitting in the Doom Club with a couple of the other Covey FACs. The weather had been especially lousy, with squall line thunderstorms over the mountains between DaNang and Laos. Because of the weather either over the target area or over our route to the AO, we hadn't flown any missions in several days. We were getting antsy, and spent most of our time bitching. And drinking. We were about to order another round of drinks, when in walked a Marine Lieutenant. It was Lieutenant Royce! “Who wants to help celebrate the Marine Corps birthday?” he bellowed. I got the impression he'd already started celebrating a bit earlier. When he saw me, his eyes lit up. “Lieutenant! Great to see you. I have a jeep outside, and I can take five of you.” “I'm ready!” I answered, “Let's go.” Three other guys joined me in piling into the jeep for a quick, albeit dangerous, drive to Camp DaNang, the Marine outpost. When we arrived we spilled out and went into the Marine Officer's Club. The Marines didn't know how to live in luxury, but they sure knew how to throw a party. All the booze we could drink. All the food, great food, we could eat. Steak, lobster, shrimp. We had a ball. Like every other time I got shit-faced drunk, I blacked out. I think I had a good time. Next thing I knew, someone was shaking me. “Lieutenant. Wake up.” It was Royce. I felt like crap. I lifted my head and looked around. I was on a canvas cot. “It's 0500 hours,” Royce proclaimed, “Let's go for a run.” “I, I think I'll pass,” I responded. “Okay. If you want to wash up, here's a basin.” He handed me an empty helmet. All I could think was, “You gotta be shitting me.” I thanked Royce and hitched a ride back to DaNang. Damn, those Marines knew how to throw a party! From Today: A sacred part of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier usually only visited by presidents and foreign dignitaries is open to the public this week in honor of the 100th anniversary of the memorial dedicated to America's unidentified war casualties. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Plaza on the hallowed ground of Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia is usually reserved for the sentinels who stand guard and presidents and other dignitaries presenting a wreath or flowers. Ahead of Veterans Day on Thursday, the American public is being given the chance to step forward on the plaza and pay their respects by placing flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The special opportunity is available on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST by registering online in advance. TODAY's Craig Melvin traveled to the site of the sacred white marble sarcophagus to speak with a gold star mother who regularly visits Arlington as well as a senior member of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as “The Old Guard,” who keep watch day and night at the tomb. The memorial was dedicated on Nov. 11, 1921, after the remains of an unidentified soldier from World War I were exhumed from a military cemetery in France, flown to the United States, and buried in a ceremony officiated by President Warren G. Harding. Remains of unidentified soldiers from World War II and the Korean War were later interred at the tomb in the 1950s. The remains of a Vietnam War veteran were buried there in 1984, but they were exhumed in 1998 and buried at a Missouri military cemetery at the request of the soldier's family after he was positively identified as Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie, according to the Arlington National Cemetery website. Cindy Chip, whose son Sgt. Michael Hardegree died while serving in Iraq in 2007, is among the more than 12,000 people who have signed up so far to lay flowers at the tomb on Tuesday and Wednesday. "We don't know that soldier's name," she told Craig on TODAY Tuesday. "We don't know anything about him except that he was an American soldier and he gave his life for his country. And we will never forget him. "And every mother in her heart, that is what we want to say. Just don't forget them. Just don't forget that he lived. And that's what that tomb says to me. This country will never forget it." From my author website: Saying Goodbye To A Friend Posted on April 15, 2015 I buried a friend yesterday. At this age, that's not terribly unusual. What made this different is that Rick Chorlins was killed 45 years ago, and his remains have finally been brought home. Rick and I were close when we were cadets at the Air Force Academy. Then, in 1967, graduation sent us in different directions, and we didn't meet up again until late 1969. I was stationed at DaNang Air Base, South Vietnam, and had wangled a good-deal trip to Thailand for a few days. I was going to go for an orientation ride on a C-130 Airborne Command and Control Center (ABCCC), call-sign Moonbeam. It was a chance to get away from the unrelenting nightly rocket attacks, and see locals who were not burdened by war and who knew how to smile. I arrived at Nakon Phanom Royal Thai Air Base, called NKP, and headed to the Officers Club. And there, standing at the bar, was Rick, along with another classmate I hadn't seen in over two years, Bob Moore. Meeting up with old friends after a long time is always fun. Running into them unexpectedly on the other side of the world is really special. We hung around together the entire night. After a few drinks, we had dinner, then went back to their hootch and caught up with what had been happening in our lives. We had all gotten married since we last saw each other. Rick had gotten a Master's Degree. Bob had become a father. We swapped war stories. I told them what it was like to be a Forward Air Controller, and they told me what it was like to fly the A-1 in combat. Truth be told, I felt like I was the kid and they were the grown-ups. I was flying a dinky little O-2A Skymaster, while they were flying the Skyraider, a gigantic, fire-breathing tail-dragger with a round engine that carried thousands of pounds of bombs under its wings and dueled with enemy gunners for a living. They were real fighter pilots. After hours of shooting down our watches with our hands, we said our good-byes and vowed to get together again, at some unknown time in the future. Great guys. If you've read Hamfist Over The Trail, this story might sound familiar. Chapter 28 is the fictionalized account of my meeting up with Bob and Rick. Dave and Dick in the book are the fictional characters representing the real-life Rick and Bob. Bob was killed the next week . A few months later, Rick was shot down and he was listed as KIA, but his remains were not recovered. Until now. After 45 years, Rick came home. His remains had been discovered in Laos in 2003 and sent to Hawaii, where DNA testing finally confirmed it was Rick. Rick was buried at the Air Force Academy cemetery with full military honors, including a 21-gun salute, a missing-man fly-by, and the solemn playing of Taps. Generals presented flags to his two surviving relatives, his sisters, Cheryl and Toby. Then we all gathered together at a restaurant to tell Rick stories. And we all had a really great time, reminiscing about Rick's great sense of humor, his intelligence, and his dedication to duty. It was a great Celebration of Life. And it was also a solemn reminder of the sacrifices the families of servicemen faced, and continue to face, when they send their loved ones off to war. They wait at home, never knowing if the sound of the closing car door in the street is a neighbor coming home or a military staff car with a Colonel and a Chaplain coming to bring news that will change their lives forever. That happened 58,286 times during the Vietnam War. Eighteen on my classmates were lost in Southeast Asia. Five have still not been found.

Welcome to November 10, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a sacred fruit and a tradition of loyalty. Pomegranates have been a favorite of fruit lovers for a very long time. A big favorite. In Ancient Egypt, there are wall paintings depicting the fruit and King Tut was even buried with some so that he could enjoy pomegranates in the afterworld. This delicious fruit was a part of both Greek and Roman mythology and is even mentioned in the Torah. Buddhism considers the pomegranate a sacred fruit. It appears in the paintings of Botticelli and Raphael. So what's all the fuss about? If you're asking, then you've never had a taste. November is National Pomegranate Month, so get your hands on one of these heavenly fruits and enjoy! As a result, Captain Samuel Nicholas became the first commissioned officer in the Continental Marines and is celebrated as the Marine's first commandant. On the Marine Corps Birthday we celebrate those who are always loyal to each other, their country and their traditions. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Welcome back to 50Talk for Episode 8. This week Cathy and I are talking about a lot of things that we've found worthy of some conversation. I do have to start off with wishing the United States Marine Corps a Happy Birthday and also a Happy Veterans Day to all those serving and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this Country. I have to mention how I celebrated my 1st Marine Corps Birthday and my last three. It's funny how time changed over those four years. November is National Diabetes month and the focus this year is on pre-Diabetes and preventing Diabetes. Although I've been diagnosed for at least 9-10 years it is still an on-going battle to me. Do people still make Citizens Arrests? I have to talk about this in light of the Ahmaud Arbery trial going on. We talk about how out-dated this law is in Georgia. We also talk covid19 and Aaron Rogers vs Kyrie Irving and some of the backlash they both are taking and I try and make light of someone lying about it versus someone who just doesn't want to get vaccinated. How to make a bed...A big time petpeeve of mine. Yes we are talking about that to. Actually we get pretty deep into it. Please don't think that we're turning into a sports podcast because we aren't but we also are talking about Ex-Raider Henry Ruggs and his high speed accident in LasVegas and A little bit about the Netflix series Colin: In Black and White. We end the show with some talk about Jenna Ryan, the white lady who said " she is white skinned and Blonde haired and she won't be going to jail" because of her role in our Government Insurrection in January. Thanks again for joining us and if you have any comments or question please feel free to email me at : Victor50talk@gmail.com
When Marine Corps Veteran Kelly Murphy began an Instagram account to document his workouts, he never dreamed that it would lead him to becoming the winner of CBS' "Tough as Nails" competition show. He left the set $200,000 dollars richer and the owner of a brand-new Ford F-150.In this week's episode of Borne the Battle, Murphy talks about life in the Marines, helping student Veterans find their place in civilian life and winning season one of the CBS competition show Tough as Nails.Murphy also works for the University of Central Missouri. He helps with outreach and recruitment for the university as well as mentors and helps student Veterans with their transition to civilian life.Murphy reflects on his own difficulties with transitioning to civilian life and advises Veterans currently separating from the military: “Go find your tribe to hang out with; go find your fellow Veterans, because it'll help you.”Though he is retired from the Marine Corps, Murphy continues to maintain his physical strength and fitness. When the Instagram account he created to document his workouts gained a following, he was approached by the casting director of Tough as Nails. Of his time on the show, Murphy says: “It brought me back… to my Marine Corps days. The show kind of made me feel like my old self again.”Borne the Battle Veteran of the Week: Marine Veteran Gregory “Pappy” Boyington Additional Links: Murphy's Tough as Nails Bio GI Bill Benefits Information

So For the Marine Corps Birthday today, My story starts with a four hour long bus ride to sunny San Diego. As soon as the bus stopped I started acquiring new skills quickly. I did not need any self-motivation because the motivation offered up by those that got on the bus after arrival. The Drill instructors offered lot's of motivation. It was sufficient for those that had arrived on the bus. They were yelling, screaming and in our personal space. They were demanding and exact. We almost tripped over each other as we erupted out of the bus. Under the watchful eyes of those welcoming us we were directed to stand on yellow painted footprints on the asphalt. We were told how to stand as we waited. There was energy that was fast moving and washed over me creating excitement and fear. I was then welcomed to Marine Corps Recruit Depot where I would be for the next three months. We were then formed into lines and marched like cattle into a room to get a haircut. They asked how I would like my hair cut. Then I heard the buzz of the trimmers and felt the cold steel vibrate against the base of my neck and then proceed up my neck and over my head right through the center. Within about 6 more swipes the haircut was finished. I ran my hand over the smooth skin that had not seen the light of day since I was an infant. My red hair had been sucked up by the vacuum hose connected to the trimer and had disappeared as quickly as the trimmers could move through it. It took about three mins. They were yelling and I was up and out of the chair. The entire time we were in Basic training the Drill Instructors were right there to provide motivation and they did it in a couple different ways. The first one was getting in your face nose to nose. Finger within a hair breath of your eye, yelling like you across a football field stadium from them. The second way was by corporal punishment. Drop and give me 50, or digging sit ups, now pushups, jumping jacks, now burpees. Then round and round we go. But it did create a few different things, one it created memory, most often didn't happen more than twice often we learned after the first time. It also created strong and resilient people that could act fast and follow orders without question. Both of those things are important in combat situations. Growth is that 5th basic human need that we talked about in Episode 102 and 103. It will come to us, whether we want it or not. To live an amazing life you must find motivation and choose to grow. I have experienced many times in my life where I was nose to nose with life. I now choose to move myself and not leave it up to life to motivate me. The Marine Corps creates a brotherhood, Once you claim the title you are forever a Marine! You have brothers and sisters at your side at all times. You know each one is strong and capable and that they will have your back! This is one of the things that I love about being a Marine. It was lots of work. At the time I was not sure I had made the right decision. But I love being a part and I love being together with my brothers and Sisters. So today is the birthday of the Marine Corps! November 10, 2020. Celebrating 245 years of making the grass grow all over the world! Happy Birthday Marines. We also dive into the 2020 election and what we feel is going to happen.
It’s November 10, 1775. A gentlemen by the name of Capt. Samuel Nicholas forms the world deadliest fighting force in a bar in Philadelphia. That bar is called Tun Tavern, and that fighting force is the United Stated Marine Corps. 245 years later former and current Marines still get together on this day to celebrate the birth of their beloved Corps. To celebrate the birthday Ricky sits down with the great minds behind the AVA Group, A veterans assistance organization specializing in helping veterans and their families transition from military life to civilian life (www.theavagroup.org). They talk about the tough, but rewarding times in service and the importance of a family support system at home. To all the veterans out there, Thank you for your service. To Ryan, Damian, and every former and current Marine celebrating tonight: Thank you for your service, happy birthday, and stay safe. To Erin - Thank you for your unwavering support to the veteran community. You are truly appreciated! From the crew at Baezco Learning and the HR Talk Podcast, Semper Fidelis

This week’s Marine Corps Birthday episode of Borne the Battle features Marine Corps Veteran, former police officer, MMA champion, bestselling author and founder of the Mighty Oaks Foundation, Chad Robichaux. He turned his passion and greatest struggles into a foundation that helps his fellow Veterans who suffer from PTSD. When PTSD ended his military career, Robichaux fell back on his skills as a martial artist. He fought in Strikeforce and Bellator, won HDNet’s Legacy FC belt and became a world champion MMA fighter. However, his fighting career consumed him, worsening his PTSD and delivering a reckoning to face his serious issues. At the height of his MMA career, Robichaux was on the verge of suicide. After realizing that he needed a holistic approach to self-care instead of drowning himself in fights, he made the choice to seek help from his wife and found support in faith. Now, he strives to help other Veterans discover the strength of a multifaceted approach to treating PTSD before they become statistics.

Both the Marine Corps Birthday and Veterans Day were this week. I had the opportunity to speak with some fellow Marines and Veterans and share stories. This lead me to think about my time in boot camp when I was 18-years-old. Needless to say... it was Hell! But as tough as it was, by the end of it I was a much stronger and more capable version of myself. And the lessons that I learned have served me well as I went on to pursue other meaningful things in my life. In this episode, I speak from the heart and share three of them with you, and I hope that they serve you well too! Thank you for listening! To hear more great episodes like this one, click here! One of the show highlights is his recount of celebrating the Marine Corps Birthday while serving in Bosnia as an Army Warrant Officer. Download from iTunes File Download (67:59 min / 62 MB)
Join The Dame at 9 EST for a special Veterans Day/Marine Corps Birthday show with retired Marines Teobear and Sgt. Sanchez to give us their input and perspective on these momentous occasions. As we expand our scheduling to include national and geopolitical issues and take action to take our country back, we must always acknowledge and appreciate the service and sacrifice given to our country and its Constitution by our Military and Marines.
