Career Unicorns - Spark Your Joy

Antonio L. Ingram II is Senior Counsel at the NAACP LDF. He is a graduate of Yale College and UC Berkeley School of Law.  He served as a law clerk for the honorable Ivan L. Lemelle in the Eastern District of Louisiana and for Chief Judge Roger L. Gregory for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Antonio also completed a Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship in Malawi where he did anti-corruption work. Talking to Antonio Ingram II, someone I met when he was a first year law student and I was the Director of Employer Outreach and Career Counselor, left me feeling inspired to focus on doing social justice work sustainably. In this episode with Antonio, we discuss:  How his background growing up as a Black American in Oakland instills his passion for justice and drives his purpose to make the world better than what he inherited. Why as the descendants of slaves, he believes it's important to clerk for two Black federal judges and change the laws that once held his ancestors in bondage to now protect marginalized communities.   What it felt like to be the only non-White law clerk out of 20 law clerks even when clerking in very diverse states, and why it's important to diversify clerkships.   What we can do to improve the education system, and make public schools a place of integration and learning.   What you can do to have hope, especially during dark times like the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict, by focusing on the progress we've made.   How growing up poor makes us afraid of poverty and keeps us as indentured servants in corporate America, and what we can do to let go of that fear and focus on finding happiness.   How to overcome what seems like insurmountable obstacles by sustaining yourself with wonder and gratitude.   What we learn from Black men who were the first to go to high profile jobs like Goldman Sachs dying prematurely compared to their peers.  How to make the world a better place and not be a martyr and succumb to powers literally trying to take you out and force you to overwork yourself to prove yourself.  How completing a Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship in Malawi where he did anti-corruption work allowed him to get away from White Supremacy and grow in a way that was life empowering.   How to maintain perspective, and know that where you grow up and where you come from does not have to be your entire world, and your world can be boundless.   Want to connect with us?   The recent Supreme Court rulings against affirmative action are huge setbacks for marginalized communities and communities of color.  During these challenging times, it's easy to lose hope.  And it's even more important to surround ourselves with good people and things that are life sustaining.  Talking to Antonio Ingram II, someone I met when he was a first year law student and I was the Director of Employer Outreach and Career Counselor, left me feeling inspired to focus on doing social justice work sustainably. In this episode with Antonio, we discuss: - How his background growing up as a Black American in Oakland instills his passion for justice and drives his purpose to make the world better than what he inherited. - Why as the descendants of slaves, he believes it's important to clerk for two Black federal judges and change the laws that once held his ancestors in bondage to now protect marginalized communities.  - What it felt like to be the only non-White law clerk out of 20 law clerks even when clerking in very diverse states, and why it's important to diversify clerkships.  - What we can do to improve the education system, and make public schools a place of integration and learning.  - What you can do to have hope, especially during dark times like the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict, by focusing on the progress we've made.  - How growing up poor makes us afraid of poverty and keeps us as indentured servants in corporate America, and what we can do to let go of that fear and focus on finding happiness.  - How to overcome what seems like insurmountable obstacles by sustaining yourself with wonder and gratitude.  - What we learn from Black men who were the first to go to high profile jobs like Goldman Sachs dying prematurely compared to their peers. - How to make the world a better place and not be a martyr and succumb to powers literally trying to take you out and force you to overwork yourself to prove yourself.  - How completing a Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship in Malawi where he did anti-corruption work allowed him to get away from White Supremacy and grow in a way that was life empowering. - How to maintain perspective, and know that where you grow up and where you come from does not have to be your entire world, and your world can be boundless. Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin was the first person in her immediate family to go to college. Her parents were immigrants and wanted her to become a successful doctor, lawyer, or businessperson. She liked kids so she originally thought she would be a pediatrician. She experienced some obstacles so she changed her major to English as she thought she could become a writer. In this podcast, Dr. Orbé-Austin shares her academic and professional journey including how her path changed from becoming a pediatrician to a writer, to an Assistant Professor, to becoming a licensed psychologist. She openly shares her struggles and successes as well as the self-reflection process that led her to the field of psychology including how, and why, she opened her own private practice in the greater New York City area. Dr. Orbé-Austin is a licensed psychologist and executive coach with expertise in Imposter Syndrome, career advancement, and leadership development. She is a co-founder and partner of Dynamic Transitions Psychological Consulting, a career and executive coaching consultancy, where she works mostly with high potential managers and executives. Dr. Orbé-Austin shares many stories and impactful advice during our discussion. For example, she was an RA (Resident Assistant) for two years and really loved working with students, counseling them and supporting them in their own journeys while in college. She states, “And I thought maybe I could be a counselor or a psychologist. And my father, at the time, worked at an insurance company and they happened to have an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) and he said, ‘there's a psychologist there. Do you want to talk to her about what it takes to become a psychologist?'” The psychologist she talked with happened to be a counseling psychologist and an English major during her undergraduate career. Dr. Orbé-Austin recalls that the psychologist she talked to “was the first person who really introduced me to the idea of a counseling psychologist and gave me the entrée into then pursuing my, actually pursued my master's degree at Boston College as well and it started my real love of psychology. And that's where it really began.” She continues by stating, “I think what really, like really, changed the game for me was my internship my second year where I did it at Tufts University at the counseling center there working with Jonathan Slavin.” Dr. Orbé-Austin reveals that her training and experience at Tufts was a “clinical boot camp” for getting started and her experience as a Career Counselor and eLearning Coordinator in the Starr Career Development Center at Baruch College was the “boot camp of career counseling” as “it actually taught us how to do real career counseling and it was such a profound experience…it was the most amazing experience that actually led me to having a career aspect of my practice.” She was able to diversify her practice so that they offered psychotherapy and career counseling services, and this proved to beneficial during the recession “because people were not willing to, at the time, invest in psychotherapy, but they were willing to invest in career. And so, our career practice really thrived, and it became a mainstay of what we did and what we were known for because we were one of the few people, offering in our area, offering testing.” Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin discusses her two co-authored books on Imposter Syndrome and ...

The discussion was around the 10th house. Jessica is a Career Counselor and has a background in HR. Mercury is in Libra. He's at 5 degrees of Libra and is exactly trine Mars at 7 degrees in Gemini. Both are in their shadow period before they station retrograde. Mercury retrograde shifts how we communicate. Mars retrograde is an aggressive energy around instinct and direction. With him in the sign of Gemini (the sign of communication), the theme is all about mis-communication.   Whenever you communicate with someone, you are exchanging air. This Mercury Retrograde shadow, Mars Retrograde shadow, with Saturn in retrograde all in air signs, this will absolutely impact relationships and how we communicate. There are a lot of breakups and breakdowns in relationships right now. Mars makes situations intense.  It's been extremely difficult to communicate with people the past few days and there is a lot of reactive energy. Gemini is very changeable. Geminis say whatever they are thinking. Mars moves into Gemini and that means that filtering will disappear. Mars will bring reactionary feelings and actions. In the fall, get ready for people to be really reactive, especially around the elections.   ENROLL in our Rising Signs Education and Support Groups: https://www.accessibleastrology.com/risingsignsignup BOOK A READING with one of our Astrologers: https://accessibleastrology.as.me/schedule.php ENROLL in the Accessible Astrology Academy: https://www.accessibleastrology.com/academy-programs Learn more about Accessible Astrology: https://www.accessibleastrology.com/

How does jealousy show up differently in non-monogamous versus monogamous relationships? What about career envy? We covered this and much more in this episode. As always, I hope it's helpful.

The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education

Welcome to the Counter Narrative Podcast, a show designed to change the way we talk, and think, about education. By sharing stories of successes and triumphs, we aim to challenge the dominant narrative that often negatively portrays our disenfranchised populations. I'm your host, Charles Williams. An urban educator for more than 15 years, a current school principal in Chicago, an educational consultant, an equity advocate, and the co-host of Inside The Principal's Office. -- In this episode, I chat with Zachary Korth, a second year Assistant Principal within Chicago Public Schools. He previously served as the Math Instructional Coach and College and Career Counselor within Austin ISD and a STEM Instructional Coach in Portland Public. With a wealth of experience in restorative practices and building a climate and culture of high expectations and energy, he ensures everyone gets what they n eed to be successful. Whenever interacting with Mr. Korth you know he will always listen, support, and, if needed, offer solutions. In honor of Pride Month, we centered our conversation around the LGBTQ community. Specifically, we addressed the continued issues members of this community are facing not just from society but from their parents and educators. Note that I didn't mention peers because as Zach and I both noted, a majority of the students within our schools have largely accepted their LGBTQ counterparts. In fact, Zach shares his perceptions of why adults are so often reluctant to embrace these orientations that they view as “abnormal.” Yes, that was sarcasm Texas. During the conversation, we continuously circled back to the idea of not only acceptance but respect and love. Afterall, we are all humans and deserve to be treated as such. Ready to hear more? In high school and even college some of us were designated a Career Counselor that recommended various careers we could go into based off of our school records. But what if in addition to Career Counselors we had the option of speaking to an Entrepreneur Counselor?  Speaking to an Entrepreneur Counselor could shift so many things for budding small business owners, however, at the moment employees work their way up the corporate ladder, end up hating their job and or boss before they decide a 9-5 isn't for them. This episode explores the spectrum of employee to business owner which is broken down into 4 categories: Vital Team Member Double Agent Experienced Master Real Go Getter  If you've ever felt like there's something more than your daily 9-5 grind then this episode might be worth exploring to see which category you fall into :-) And if you don't know which category you fall into there's a link below to 2-minute “9-5 or Build Your Own Business Quiz” that will help you figure out which category aligns with you the most.   To take the “9-5 or Build Your Own Business Quiz” click here:  https://www.letscutclass.com/9-to-5-or-be-your-own-boss-quiz-2  To get in contact with Rochelle: To Book a 15 min networking strategy call with Rochelle click here: https://calendly.com/itsrogroh  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itsrogroh/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RochelleGroh What type of networker are you? Deborah, Sophee's mother, "is in her own world and she's happy there and I come in and out of that world and that's ok," continues Payne who's never felt that she's had to live near  to her parents.  Payne is comfortable saying, "I care for them deeply, I just feel that closeness to them is not a priority."  A Florida native, now living in Vancouver, CA,  Sophee is happily ensconced in her full time career, helping other's fulfill their dreams. After six years, getting straight A's and doing all that she was 'supposed to do,'  completing her bachelors degree and getting a Master's Degree in Industrial Design, she realized that she wasn't happy. My guest loved the design work but really missed the one one one interaction with people. After watching her mother struggle in an attempt  to start her own business and fail, Sophee felt so much 'self doubt' that she never thought she'd be capable of  starting her own.  Again, interesting dynamics between the two women often got in the way. Payne feels that her mom likes having people around so they can do things for her that she doesn't necessarily like to do. "She demands a lot from the people closest to her," admits Sophee. "I think of her as a sun, even from a distance I can feel this warmth, she gives direction, but at the same time, the closer you get the more uncomfortably warm you get  and also the more you're kind of forced to evolve around her," reflects Payne.Sophee is comfortable saying what works for her now regarding her relationship with her mom.  It's about "showing my mom compassion, compassion with boundaries." WEBSITE: BEST LIFE COACH COLLECTIVEhttps://bestlifecoachcollective.com/coach/sophee-payne/ PERSONAL WEBSITE:https://www.sopheepayne.com/Discover Morehttps://www.instagram.com/sopheepaynecareercoaching/https://www.sopheepayne.com/bloghttps://www.tiktok.com/@purposewithmoney
