Dr. Sandie Morgan is joined by Josie Heyano as the two discuss the importance of bridging communities to prevent human trafficking. Josie Heyano Josie Heyano, LMSW, is a Deg Xinag Athabascan advocate from Alaska, focused on creating holistic and decolonized practices to serve Alaska Native and Indigenous communities impacted by human trafficking. With extensive experience supporting youth facing homelessness, exploitation, and trafficking, she founded Signify Consulting, LLC, to further her collaboration in anti-trafficking work across Alaska. Josie is a Presidentially appointed member of the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking, advising federal policy, and in 2023, she received the FBI Director's Community Leadership Award for her contributions to prevention and intervention in Alaska. Her work honors her great aunt Linda Miller and others still awaiting justice. Key Points Traditional introductions are important as they reflect relationships and community ties, highlighting accountability and cultural identity. Serving on the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking, Josie highlights the importance of humility and listening to voices within her community that are often unheard. She cites a recent visit by the council to Alaska as an opportunity to humanize the data and issues surrounding human trafficking. Human trafficking is a symptom of broader systemic issues, such as domestic violence, homelessness, and mental health crises. There is a need for a holistic approach that addresses these interconnected challenges within Indigenous communities. The Alaska Human Trafficking Data Needs Assessment revealed gaps in data and understanding regarding trafficking. Community relationships and collaboration across different sectors (service providers, law enforcement, academia) are necessary to improve data collection and response strategies. Cultural practices and community care can serve as protective factors against human trafficking. It is necessary to integrate traditional values and practices into prevention efforts, focusing on unconditional care, relationship building, and addressing basic community needs. A preventative approach that extends beyond immediate trafficking interventions includes ensuring that community members have access to essential resources, support systems, and a sense of belonging from birth, thus preventing vulnerability to trafficking in the first place. Active, compassionate engagement with community members fosters safety and well-being. Just over three years ago George Perry Floyd Jr. was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis during an arrest after a store clerk suspected that Floyd had used a counterfeit $20 bill.Derek Chauvin, one of four police officers who arrived on the scene, knelt on Floyd's neck and back for more than nine minutes. “I can't breathe,” Floyd wheezed to no avail. The incident renewed calls for police reform. Please tell us what your work is all about.Q. I read today that a new Justice Department report says the Minneapolis Police Department engaged in the systemic use of excessive force and discriminated against minorities for years before the Floyd killing in 2020. What needs to be done to resolve conflicts between the police and residents, particularly those in Black and Brown communities?Q. You made the comment that electing Brandon Johnson as Chicago's mayor “shows a turn for the better” when it comes to improving the relationships between cops and the community. Is that because he supports having more mental health workers employed within law enforcement?Q. Last year Congress passed the Law Enforcement De-Escalation Training Act of 2022, requiring the Department of Justice to develop training curriculums on topics including alternatives to the use of force, de-escalation, and responding to a person in crisis. Was that a positive step and what else is needed?Q. What is your view of the political situation in the US these days? Did actions by the Trump administration affect relationships between the community and the police?Q. In 2021, the then Democratic-controlled House of Representatives on a mostly party-line vote passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021, but it died in the evenly divided, but Democratic controlled, Senate amid opposition from Republicans. Negotiations between Republican and Democratic senators collapsed, and the bill died. The intent of the bill was to hold law enforcement accountable for misconduct, improve transparency, and reform police training and policies. It was opposed by the police unions. What are your thoughts about that?Q. One of the provisions would restrict the application of the qualified immunity doctrine for local and state officers. Can you explain what that's all about? Should that doctrine be scrubbed?Q. Another provision would require state and local law enforcement agencies that receive federal funding to adopt anti-discrimination policies and training programs, including those targeted at fighting racial profiling. Does that need to happen?Q. What about the bill's mandate that federal law enforcement officers use deadly force only as a last resort and that de-escalation be attempted. Federal funding would be contingent on the adoption of such a policy. Is that needed?Q. Tell us about The New Conversation, which you developed to reduce tensions between police and communities of color.Q. What is the STOP program all about? How does that work? "I just believe we were put here for a purpose." – Don Lupo This week's guest is Don Lupo, an advocate for the homeless and others in need. Twenty-three years ago, Lupo left a career as a successful businessman to start a new career in service to his community, the city of Birmingham, AL. In 2016, he was awarded the FBI Director's Community Leadership Award and was named one of the "Top 50 Over 50" in the state of Alabama; in 2018 he was awarded the Civilian Service Award by the Birmingham Police Department. One of the defining moments of Lupo's life was the passing of his mother when he was 16 years old. He explains how her unconditional love for him as well as her commitment to being of service to others have inspired him throughout his life. Another defining moment was reading some words on the back of an envelope that exhorted him to "love your neighbor, feed the hungry, clothe any that are naked." This message was a "slap in the face," he says, prompting him to find a way to help others. He now includes these words in his social media posts. Lupo, who directs the Mayor's Office of Citizens' Assistance, says that he doesn't see his job as work, but as a way he can be of service to others. Lupo has certainly found ways to serve and has done a lot of work serving the homeless in the city of Birmingham. He is proud to say that almost every homeless person in the city is known by name, and if he doesn't know theirs, they know his. As a board member for Firehouse Ministries, a homeless shelter and outreach agency, he worked on raising funds for a new facility. Despite the odds, they raised $7 million in six months. Lupo believes in the vital importance of the work of Firehouse, saying that we are all "just one step" away from being homeless and that if he ever needed somewhere to go, he knows he could go there. In a profile in Good Grit Magazine, Lupo was called "the man to call when you need to get something done—especially connecting those in need with available resources." Lupo stresses that he could never have accomplished all he has without the help of others. In one example he shares that after his daughter convinced him to go on Facebook and ask for the 1500 toothbrushes the shelter needed, he was offered way more than he needed. All he had to do was ask. In this episode of Leading with Genuine Care, you'll also learn: What happened when Don Lupo met the Dalai Lama What he thinks would help address the problem of homelessness What he thought as he stood next to the mayor when they went to talk to protestors over a statue How his faith and belief in service has motivated him throughout his life Connect With Don Lupo Facebook The 2023 Do Nothing Retreat is open for registration (7 spots remaining) Join us from October 8-12 for The Do Nothing Retreat, a mindfulness meditation retreat suitable for meditators at all levels The retreat will enable you to cultivate a deeper mindfulness practice while in a peaceful and rejuvenating mountain location. EPISODE SUMMARY When examining the multidisciplinary team response to child abuse in communities, there are two principles that I believe to must be considered. The first is that MDT's are sophisticated and complex systems that are tasked with providing a coordinated and comprehensive response to child abuse. The second is that no single discipline on an MDT can adequately meet the needs of a victim of child abuse. One would think that such a system tasked with such an important mandate would have a clear leadership structure to ensure that the best possible services are being provided. However, that is not always the case. In this episode, I speak with Chris Newlin, the Executive Director of the National Children's Advocacy Center who shares with us a conceptual model of multilevel shared leadership for MDTs that provides a framework and pathway to more robust and sustainable MDT response to child abuse in your community. GUEST: Chris Newlin, MS LPC, is the Executive Director of the National Children's Advocacy Center where he is responsible for providing leadership and management of the NCAC and participating in national and international training and leadership activities regarding the protection of children. The NCAC was the first Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) in the world and provides child abuse prevention and intervention services in Huntsville/Madison County; and also houses the NCAC Training Center, the Southern Regional Children's Advocacy Center, the NCAC Virtual Training Center, and the Child Abuse Library Online (CALiO™). The NCAC is a past multi-year winner of the Better Business Bureau's Torch Award for Workplace Ethics; 2012 Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit of the Year; 2016 Federal Bureau of Investigation Director's Community Leadership Award recipient; (multi-year finalist), winner in 2016 and 2019 of the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce Best Places to Work; and a Private Sector Member of the Virtual Global Taskforce. Chris has more than 22 years of experience working in CACs as a Forensic Interviewer, Victim Advocate, Therapist, Clinical Director, and Executive Director. Chris has provided diverse training related to the Children's Advocacy Center Model, the multidisciplinary response to child abuse, the international development of Children's Advocacy Centers, forensic interviewing, best practices in child abuse intervention and response, and additional child maltreatment and exploitation topics in more than 30 countries throughout the world. He has worked in both urban and rural Children's Advocacy Centers. Chris received his Master's in School Psychology from the University of Central Arkansas, is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and has completed coursework at the Harvard University Business School Executive Education Program. The story that led Martha Deaver to become an advocate for nursing home residents is, like many others, rooted in a terrible experience with 2 nursing homes in Little Rock Arkansas where her mother and mother-in=law were residents. The story is both tragic but, unfortunately, all too familiar. She ultimately shared the horrific story with a journalist who published it in Ladies Home Journal. She went on to supply detailed information and data to the director of an organization that provides information on health care issues to Consumer Reports. This resulted in Consumer Reports publishing one of the most in-depth looks at America's nursing homes to date entitled: The Crisis in America's Nursing Homes. Mrs. Deaver talks about what she knows about the failure of the nursing home industry, nursing home tragedies and ills that have been known by Federal Government agencies for decades. As a matter of fact, she has been an adviser to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Office of Inspector General (OIG). She explains how after her extensive investigative work with nursing home complaints, at her insistence they were added to the website of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services so that people seeking information about nursing homes would be able to see beyond the annual nursing home oversight survey to find more information about complaints lodged against them. In 2013 she worked with Jeff Lowenstein with the Centers for Public Integrity on a 2 year project where data from every nursing home in the country became the basis of the largest in-depth investigation into the importance of adequate staffing in our nations nursing homes. She's been recognized by the Governor of Arkansas, who said,, “She is an advocate in the best sense of the word, tirelessly supporting and defending others.” and was honored by RBI director Robert Mueller III, with the 2010 FBI Director's Community Leadership Award for the state of Arkansas. Mrs. Deaver's passion is palpable. You can hear it as she speaks about the unspeakable tragedies experienced by U.S. Nursing Home Residents. Mrs. Deaver is not only seeking to find out and call out the negative, but seeks to find the positive in the health care workers that provide the direct care to resident. She created the AANHR's first national Nursing Assistant Recognition Award to recognize nursing assistants from across the state of Arkansas. She also developed the first program acknowledging National Residents Rights Week and has chaired both events for the past five years. Today, Mrs. Deaver is the president of the Arkansas Advocates for Nursing Home Residents (AANHR), an organization dedicated to protecting residents in nursing homes from abuse and seeking prosecution for those who victimize nursing home residents.

Today’s episode “Right Said Ed: Kressy & The FBI” with my Guest, Ed Kressy. Ed had a lot of opportunities in life: college education, career with Genentech (named Fortune Magazine's Number One "Best Company to Work For"), home ownership in San Francisco. Yet he threw it all, and much more, away to two decades of drug addiction. He spent months in jail, and years in destitution. His final 11 devastating years of addiction to methamphetamine resulted in harrowing psychosis, including extreme paranoia around the FBI. After getting clean in 2008, he discovered: Just because you're done with drugs, doesn't mean drugs are done with you. He continued to battle severe mental health challenges. Fortunately, amazing individuals inspired him to pursue a path of self-improvement, spirituality, and service to others. In 2019, FBI Director Christopher Wray recognized him with his Director's Community Leadership Award. His inspiring transformation is the subject of his upcoming book, My Addiction & Recovery: Just Because You're Done with Drugs, Doesn't Mean Drugs Are Done with You (Lifestyle Entrepreneurs Press, April 2020). His articles appear in The Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Vox. He has appeared on stage for The Moth. He volunteers for the FBI and Police Department in his hometown of San Francisco, helping their outreach to communities affected by incarceration and addiction. He spends days and weekends in California state prisons, volunteering for organizations (Defy Ventures and Hustle 2.0) that deliver training in entrepreneurism and employment for currently and formerly incarcerated men and women. He leads a weekly Toastmasters-style meeting in a women's unit of San Francisco County Jail. Guest BioReverend France A. Davis, pastor emeritus, of the Salt Lake City's Calvary Baptist Church, served his congregation as its pastor for over 45 years. In late December 2019 he stepped down. Still active in his congregation, still serving, he remains an influencer for his faith, and for Utah's Civil Rights efforts, and for the state's growing African-American community. Davis came to Salt Lake City in 1972 to teach and to attend graduate school at the University of Utah. He was appointed instructor in Communication and in Ethnic Studies, earning a distinguished teacher award from the university. Davis also retired as an adjunct associate professor in 2014.Davis has published several books, including a memoir, with co-author Nayra Atiya, entitled: France Davis: An American Story Told (see links below). Among numerous awards and recognitions, he was given an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Utah in 1993, the Salt Lake Community College in 1997, Dixie State College in 2002, an official citation from the Utah House of Representatives, in recognition of his outstanding service to Utah in 2006. He also received among other awards the FBI Director's Community Leadership Award, given to him at the FBI Headquarters in Washington, DC in 2014.SummaryDavis spoke to “Speak Your Piece” host Brad Westwood in detail about his first coming to Utah, his interactions with Utah society and its predominate church, the African American story in Utah--in Salt Lake City and Ogden--with the story beginning long before the Mormon Pioneers arrived in Utah. He describes his career efforts at furthering civil rights; what African American life was like in predominantly white Utah (including during Utah's pre 1970s, so called, “separate but equal” society), and his half century of service to the Calvary Baptist Church. At the end of the second segment, Davis outlined what he describes as four essential actions Utah society must take, to further economic opportunity, equality and justice, for all of Utah's citizens. Davis also describes his first Salt Lake City landlord, who after meeting him in person, rejected renting to him, despite paying an advance deposit. Davis also described his very first encounter with a LDS Church leader (which thereafter became extremely productive) when a security detail asked him to leave an airport elevator, so that the “president” could use it first. Davis refused, and awkwardly remained in the elevator with whom he later discovered was with LDS Church “president” Harold B. Lee. With insightful personal detail Davis describes placing a marker on USU Price Campus in 1983, for African American miner Robert Marshall who was lynched and buried there, in Price, Utah in 1925, with a thousand spectators (Davis' life was threatened by coming to Price); how Salt Lake City's African American community was largely destroyed with the coming and enlargement of I-15 Freeway; Utah government's launching with his and other's insistence, of the Martin Luther King Commission; and finally his working relationship with Utah's governors (starting with Calvin Rampton and ending with Governor Gary Herbert) and with various LDS Church Presidents (starting with Gordon B. Hinckley and ending with current Church President Russell M. Nelson). If you were going to sum up Rick Streb in 5 words, those would be the five to use... And in exactly that order. Rick enjoys his professional life, but it takes a back seat to spend most of his time with his beautiful daughter and friends. He has made it a priority to build his business around his life; not his life around his business. Rick Streb, the creator of ProDiets.com, is an innovator in fitness and nutrition. He has been a respected member of the health and fitness industry for almost three decades. He has established himself as one of the top trainers, nutritionists, and coaches for competitive bodybuilding, fitness and figure athletes in the United States today with zero ever finishing out of the Top 5 in their competitions. Rick's clients have included professional athletes, television and music celebrities, bodybuilding competitors, fitness models and beauty pageant contestants throughout the United States who participate in his coaching programs and obtain very successful results. He's also built a tremendously successful boutique training business serving women ages 35-55, helping over 750 ladies look and feel better than they ever thought possible in the past 3 years. Along the way, Rick has developed a variety of proprietary systems to build effective fat loss nutrition into his clients' programs to ensure that he could maximize their results no matter what type of client he is working with at the time. These days Rick has found his true professional calling – sharing what has worked in his own businesses with other fitness entrepreneurs. It is that commitment and passion which distinguishes him from other fitness personalities. Rick is considered to be one of America's leading fitness professionals with 3 fitness-related degrees, a dietetics degree, and over 27 years of experience as a fitness industry leader and numerous fitness and nutrition-related certifications. After witnessing the power of organized mountain biking to help teenagers learn life-long lessons during his seven years of coaching the Berkeley High School Mountain Bike Team, Austin decided to put his career in natural resource management and public policy mediation on hold to become the president of NICA in late 2012. Since then, he has helped grow NICA into the largest youth cycling program in the United States. Austin is a strong believer in the power of cycling to transform individuals and communities and loves to tour and ride all types of bikes with his wife and friends. Austin received a Community Leadership Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition and was named by BICYCLING Magazine as one of 21 “New Heroes of Cycling” in 2016 “. There is no doubt Austin is one of the most influential leaders in youth development as well as the bicycle industry. What we admire most about Austin is his crystal clear communication about how bicycling helps kids develop into the leaders of tomorrow, brings communities together, and helps infuse a code of environmental stewardship in us all. This interview was recorded live at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic. We built this interview series from the title of our newest children’s picture book Taking The Lead that follows our animal characters along a journey to open a local bike shop and inspire their town to ride. We hope you enjoy these personal stories from bike industry executives, non-profit leaders, pro athletes, and families just like yours who are celebrating kids on bikes and inspiring families to get off the couch... and out for a ride. --- Purchase our books, and download the World of Buddy Pegs podcast so you can share the love of bicycling with the kids in your life. Visit your local bike shop, or visit us at BuddyPegs.com. Remember it’s the little moments that create big memories.
Sonny Melendrez is in the business of inspiration! Inspiring others has always been an important element in the life of this dynamic radio and television personality, author and motivational speaker. He was presented the National Hispanic Radio Personality of the Year Award by Ricardo Montalban, then president of the National Nosotros Organization. As star of the award-winning children’s television series, ‘You and Me, Kid!” on the Disney Channel, Sonny enjoyed one of the longest runs in the network’s history. Sonny's ability and willingness to rally people behind a cause is one reason he is involved in so many charities, both locally and nationally. In 1992, he was named Inc. Magazine's "Socially Responsible Entrepreneur of the Year” and awarded the “2000 Marketing Philanthropist Lifetime Achievement Award” by the Sales and Marketing Executives of San Antonio. President Ronald Reagan commended Sonny for his efforts in the war on drugs and he received the National Director’s Community Leadership Award by FBI Director, William S. Sessions. The Department of Justice lauded Melendrez with the prestigious “Modern Hero Award” for his efforts to inspire the nation’s youth to “Soar In School”. In 1990, in recognition of raising tens of thousands of dollars for youth scholarships, he was named "El Rey Feo" (The People's King) and presided over San Antonio's annual weeklong Fiesta celebration. The City of San Antonio named the Sonny Melendrez Community Center located on the city's West Side in his honor as way to say “thank you” for his community involvement, benefitting disadvantaged youth and families, including over 1400 motivational school presentations. Programs that benefit children have always been a priority for Sonny Melendrez. One of the projects of which he is most proud is The Children of the World Project, giving talented youth and countless volunteers a way to give back by recording the children's version of "We Are The World," which he created in Los Angeles in 1985. Over 1500 children participated in the recording and video with proceeds from record sales benefitting USA for Africa. Sonny received a Grammy nomination for "Best Children's Recording." There is hardly a charity or cause in San Antonio and many nationally, that has not received a helping hand from Sonny Melendrez. It is estimated that he has been responsible for raising over 100 million dollars in cash, goods and services for local and national non-profits during his career!. A man of a thousand voices, he provided the voices of several characters in Hanna-Barbera's "Jetsons" cartoon series; created many of the sounds heard in the Gremlins Movie; played opposite Walter Mathau as the voice of Bob Cratchet in the animated TV classic, "The Stingiest Man in Town"; and was even the voice of the infamous Fred the Cockatoo in the 70”s NBC TV series, Baretta. He was chosen from a field of over 140,000 as the new voice of the Parkay Margarine Talking Tub, and after a nationwide search, Sonny was picked as voice of Jerry Seinfeld for a campaign promoting the Bee Movie Game for ActiVision. Conferences, universities, school districts and corporate groups of all types have been inspired by Sonny’s captivating motivational presentations. His topics are designed to fire up audiences to reach their full potential through the power of enthusiasm! https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/roadtosparta In 490 BCE, some masochistic Greek guy named Pheidippides ran for 36 hours straight from Athens to Sparta to seek help in defending Athens from a Persian invasion in the Battle of Marathon. In doing so, he saved the development of Western civilization and inspired the birth of the marathon as we know it. Even now, some 2,500 years later, that run stands enduringly as one of greatest physical accomplishments in the history of mankind. Dean Karnazes, my guest on today's podcast, came up with the crazy idea of honoring Pheidippides (and Dean's own Greek heritage) by recreating this entire ancient journey in modern times. During his run, Karnazes even abstained from contemporary endurance nutrition like sports drinks and energy gels and only ate what was available in 490 BCE, such as figs, olives, cured meats and even some stuff called "mastic gum". Then he wrote about the whole experience is his new book "". The new book is intriguing, comical, sometimes tear-jerking, and certainly thought-provoking and entertaining, and Dean is probably even more intriguing. Get a load of this guy... TIME magazine named Dean one of the “Top 100 Most Influential People in the World.” Men’s Fitness hailed him as one of the fittest men on the planet. Stan Lee called him, “Super Human.” He's an acclaimed endurance athlete and NY Times bestselling author, who has pushed his body and mind to inconceivable limits. Among his many accomplishments, he has run 350 continuous miles, foregoing sleep for three nights. He’s run across the Sahara Desert in 120-degree temperatures, and he’s run a marathon to the South Pole in negative 40 degrees. On ten different occasions he’s run a 200-mile relay race solo, racing alongside teams of twelve. He has swum the San Francisco Bay, scaled mountains, bike raced for 24-hours straight, and surfed the gigantic waves off the coast of Hawaii & California. His long list of competitive achievements include winning the world’s toughest footrace, the Badwater Ultramarathon, running 135 miles nonstop across Death Valley during the middle of summer. He has raced and competed on all seven continents of the planet, twice over. In 2006 he accomplished the seemingly impossible by running 50 marathons, in all 50 US states, in 50 consecutive days, finishing with the NYC Marathon, which he ran in three hours flat! In 2011 Dean ran 3,000-miles from the coast of California to New York City, averaging 40 to 50-miles per day (one day covering more than 70!). Along the way he stopped at schools to speak to students about the importance of exercise and healthy eating. When passing through Washington DC, he was invited to run through the White House to meet with First Lady Michelle Obama and be honored for his tireless commitment to helping this country get back in shape. Dean and his incredible adventures have been featured on The Today Show, 60 Minutes, The Late Show with David Letterman, CBS News, CNN, ESPN, The Howard Stern Show, NPR’s Morning Edition, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, the BBC, and many others. He has appeared on the cover of Runner’s World, Outside, and Wired magazine’s, and has been featured in TIME, Newsweek, People, GQ, The New York Times, USA TODAY, The Washington Post, Men’s Journal, Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, and the London Telegraph, to mention a few. Dean is the winner of an ESPN ESPY and a 3-time recipient of Competitor magazines Endurance Athlete of the Year award. Dean has also raised millions of dollars for charity and was awarded the prestigious Community Leadership Award by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why it is a myth that Pheidippides ran 26.2 miles...[14:50] -How humans can actually outrun horses...[19:30] -Whether Dean ran barefoot or in leather sandals in the same way that Pheidippides did...[22:30] -The hardest part of Dean's entire run...[30:45] -How it went for Dean to eat for this race different than he ate for your other races, and why he chewed on something called "mastic gum"...[38:55] -How Dean ran for 70+ miles with no food...[41:15] -Why Dean adds rosemary to his coffee and consumes large amounts of wild salmon...[46:15] -How Dean recovers so darn fast between his events, and why he bulked up before his 50 marathons in 50 days...[51:00] -Why Dean splits his day into multiple 12-14 minute body weight workouts, and what his exact routine is...[53:00] -How Dean manages with such little sleep when running marathons over multiple days...[57:50] -Dean's take on all the talk about chronic cardio being bad for testosterone levels, increased risk of mortality, etc...[63:05] -And much more! This week: Patricia realized who she wanted to be when she grows up when she sat down with the majestic Rhodessa Jones. They talk about the creation of The Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women, and we learn that the California Arts Council once funded aerobics classes for female inmates. The Medea Project seeks to use the transformative potential of art to stem the recidivism rate for women prisoners. It is dedicated to the power that storytelling—of speaking in the first person—possesses to replace shame with resilience and to bring compassion into extreme circumstances. No allusions to OITNB are made, but Vee wouldn’t stand a chance against Rhodessa. Performer, teacher, director, Rhodessa Jones is Co-Artistic Director of San Francisco’s performance company Cultural Odyssey. Jones directsThe Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women, an award-winning performance workshop committed to incarcerated women’s personal and social transformation, now in it’s 25th year. As recipient of the U.S. Artist Fellowship, Jones expanded her work in jails and educational institutions internationally. She conducts Medea Projects in South African prisons, working with incarcerated women and training local artists and correctional personnel to embed the Medea process inside these institutions. In 2012, she was named Arts Envoy by the U.S. Embassy in South Africa. Recent U.S. residencies include Brown University and Scripps College Humanities Institute. She also was the Spring 2014 Interdisciplinary Artist in Residence at the University of Wisconsin. Mayor Ed Lee and the San Francisco Art Commission presented the 2013 Mayor's Art Award to Jones, for her "lifetime of artistic achievement and enduring commitment to the role of the arts in civic life.” In addition, she is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the California College of the Arts, SF Bay Guardian’s Lifetime Achievement Award, SF Foundation’s Community Leadership Award, Non-Profit Arts Excellence Award by the SF Business Arts Council, and an Otto Rene Castillo Award for Political Theater.
Ed Kressy had a lot of opportunities in life: college education, career with Genentech (named Fortune Magazine's Number One "Best Company to Work For"), home ownership in San Francisco. Website: https://www.edkressy.com If you love this show, please leave us a review.
