Get ready for a fascinating chat with Dr. Danielle Hiestand, LMFT, CEDS-S, where we're digging into the power of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) and Polyvagal Theory to unlock new pathways in trauma and eating disorder recovery! Dr. Hiestand breaks down how these tools aren't just fancy words but game-changers for the nervous system, helping people find calm, reconnect, and heal in profound ways. Whether you're curious or already a fan of these approaches, this episode is packed with mind-blowing insights, practical takeaways, and a dash of nerdy neuroscience fun. HEAR FROM DANIELLE ABOUT DANIELLE! I have been passionate about learning and helping others most of my life. I am originally from Northern California and was overjoyed to study at University of California, San Diego and to live near the ocean. After receiving my Bachelors of Science in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience and Psychology I stayed in San Diego to complete my doctorate in Marital and Family Therapy at Alliant International University and become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #48529). While at college, I took a course on eating disorders and began to volunteer with a program that focused on eating disorder prevention. I knew I wanted to be a therapist and help people heal and recover from their eating disorders. I planted my roots in San Diego and began working at an eating disorder treatment program. It was clear early on that most of my clients had a trauma history. Some had never called what they went through “trauma,” but could see how their life experiences had contributed to the development of their eating disorder. Others knew they had gone through something that still bothered them in the present, but didn't know how to talk about it or how to heal.  During this time I acquired extensive experience treating anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, complex PTSD, dissociative disorders, depression, and anxiety. I also began my training in EMDR therapy; a treatment that has become crucial to my therapeutic approach. To help clients on their journey toward healing I also utilize systems theory, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness. My overall goal is to work collaboratively with clients in order to honor their treatment goals. In 2013 Kelly Hinds, RDN and I created Savor Podcast. For three years we recorded episodes on nutrition, body image, mindfulness, yoga, eating disorders, dieting, EMDR therapy and beyond. Past Savor podcast episodes are available here. Before starting my family, I was an adjunct professor at University of California, San Diego, Alliant International University and San Diego State University. I taught classes on eating disorders, stress management, social psychology, and assessment. After my family started to grow, I decided to slow down and work part-time in my Mission Valley private practice in San Diego, California.  I work toward providing a calm, safe and grounded space for you to feel comfortable sharing your successes and your struggles. A journey back to self always has ups, downs and surprises. Together we can navigate how to find tools and strategies to help you cope and make space for yourself. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband and two daughters. I also love swimming, paddle boarding, and hiking. Références: Dr Navaz Habib, Activez votre nerf vague, éditions Thierry Souccar, 2021 https://fr.sott.net/article/12879-Quel-est-l-etat-de-votre-nerf-vague https://www.inserm.fr/actualite/sante-mentale-le-nerf-vague-lie-microbiote-et-depression/ Stephen W. Since Stephen Porges first proposed the Polyvagal Theory in 1994, its basic idea―that the level of safety we feel impacts our health and happiness―has radically shifted how researchers and clinicians approach trauma interventions and therapeutic interactions. One critical skill we all need is to understand ourselves, and understand particularly our own capacity. This is something that we can grow in ourselves, and teach to our kids. This concept can also be described as our “window of tolerance”, and we all know what it looks like when we're outside of that window. On one side, we tend to over react, and on the other we freeze. But there are skills we can use and model for our kids to help them recognize when we approach the edge of that window or recover from going outside of it. Becoming self aware about your window of tolerance is one criical life skill that everybody can grow in, and we're tlooking at some of the basics of that in this episode. Jaycee Dugard and Dr. Rebecca Bailey join Kim and Kara in a conversation about their therapeutic relationship turned friendship as they explore the psychology behind survival instincts and the "appease" response.  Jaycee Dugard is the survivor of a kidnapping and spent 18 years in captivity at the hands of strangers.  Since her rescue in 2009 she has used her freedom and voice to spread her unique survivor experience. Jaycee is the founder of the JAYC Foundation. She started the foundation to help other families that have suffered a familial or non-familial abduction or other trauma and has created educational programs and encourages the collaboration of various entities to provide “Protected Spaces” for families to heal.  Jaycee is also the author of “A Stolen Life” and “Freedom: My Book of Firsts”, both memoirs that she wrote herself detailing her eighteen years in captivity, eventual rescue, and recovery process. She has spoken at many venues across the country and hopes to continue writing. An important goal of hers is to educate the media and the helping professions that the term “Stockholm Syndrome” was a media-driven term and is degrading and insensitive to survivors and their families.  Jaycee enjoys spending time with her family and her faithful four-legged companions in California. Recently she has started the Polyvagal Equine Institute with longtime friends Dr Rebecca Bailey and equine expert Margie McDonald. They are excited to share educational programs, videos and workshops that focus on incorporating horses with polyvagal theory.   Rebecca Bailey, Ph.D. is a leading family psychologist and equestrian who has become a world-renowned professional teacher, speaker, author, and entrepreneur. She is the founder of Transitioning Families, a group of independently licensed mental health practitioners dedicated to Bailey's innovative ideas for helping families through crisis and difficult change. She is best known for her work with survivors of non-familial abduction and is on the advisory board of the JAYC foundation. Together with Jaycee they have created an innovative model which utilizes horses to help teach and educate judges, police officers, therapists and other professionals about compassion, kindness, and connection.  She is the creator of the Polyvagal Equine Institute and Connection Focused Therapy an organization dedicated to Equine-assisted psychotherapy and education with a focus on applying Dr. Stephen Porges research on the autonomic nervous system to a variety of populations. She believes that understanding the interaction between the nervous system and our thoughts and actions is key to compassionately responding to and addressing the complexities of today's societal demands. She has appeared on numerous Network shows including Andersen Cooper and ABC's 20/20.  A graduate of The Wright Institute in Berkley, CA, Dr. Bailey was raised in the Boston area but relocated to California 35 years ago. She now lives in Northern California with her loving husband and countless animals. We at Insight Mind Body Talk have decided our official season will run September – May, taking each summer to re-visit our “most downloaded” episodes. Why most downloaded? Jess may have her favorites, Jeanne too, but what matters most to IMBT is listening to your voice. And we heard you loud and clear through the number of downloads each episode received.  What does re-visiting mean? Well, basically, that you'll be hearing the original episode again. But this time, prior to the episode, Jess will giving inside information about her thoughts on the content, highlighting key moments, and sharing additional tips not mentioned during the episode.  The Coming In of Coming of Coming Out explores the feelings of pride and shame experienced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community.  Jess and her guest Alexander Einsman, LMFT, discuss identity, relational wounding, shame, and the development of pride both in community and within one's relationship with Self.  Alexander, who specializes in psychodynamic therapy focused around LGBTQIA identity, the Queer shame -pride continuum, and trauma, provides strategies for cultivating pride within and healing the relational wound of shame. THE CHRONICALLY THREATENED is an eye-opening episode with the creator of the Polyvagal Theory, Dr. Stephen Porges. In this episode, Dr. Porges and I talked about how the Polyvagal Theory relates to ADHD and why there is nothing 'wrong' with children who have been diagnosed with these so-called mental disorders (ADHD, ODD, Anxiety, Depression etc.). What if all these children were simply dealing with a nervous system that's locked in 'threat mode', due to chronically occurring traumatic events occurring in their environments. Now, when parents hear words such as threats or trauma, they typically only think of actual threats such as violence, divorce, abuse etc. But as Dr. Porges explains, for a highly sensitive child not much is needed to lock their nervous system while in threat mode... Listen in and hear for yourself to see if you can relate to what Dr. Porges shares around ADHD and his Polyvagal Theory. Stephen W. Porges, PhD, is Distinguished University Scientist at Indiana University, where he is the founding director of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium within the Kinsey Institute.  He holds the position of Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina and Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Maryland.  Dr. Porges served as president of both the Society for Psychophysiological Research and the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences and is a former recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Development Award.  He has published approximately 300 peer reviewed scientific papers across several disciplines including anesthesiology, biomedical engineering, critical care medicine, ergonomics, exercise physiology, gerontology, neurology, neuroscience, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, psychometrics, space medicine, and substance abuse. His research has been cited in approximately 40,000 peer review publications. In 1994 Dr. Porges proposed the Polyvagal Theory, a theory that links the evolution of the mammalian autonomic nervous system to social behavior and emphasizes the importance of physiological state in the expression of behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders. Dr Heather discusses Dr Porges' work with him regarding the polyvagal theory. This shows how different parts of the vagus nerve of the parasympathetic system respond to where we are emotionally. We used to think the vagus nerve is all about calm and generating GABA, the calming hormone, but that in fact isn't true. By understanding what moves us or keeps us in the ventral vagus, the healthy mode, shines light on how we can move through trauma and everything else. It also shows how important social engagement is as this affects the nervous system deeply and is why compassion and community are so important to healing. I love that he was able to figure this out. He's obviously one very smart dude!! Here is his bio.Dr. Stephen W. Porges is a distinguished university scientist at Indiana University, where he is the founding director of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium. In today’s episode, I’m joined by Stephen Porges, and we’ll be talking about how to create safety with reciprocal cues within a relationship from a polyvagal perspective. Polyvagal theory helps us understand how our nervous systems operate and how we can support our ability to be more present and open with another. Stephen encourages us to consider how we typically view various aspects of relationship: the ways we experience attraction and bonding and our sense of love and long-term relationship. Through these understandings, we can improve our relationship by developing more connection, security and safety within our bonds. Listen in to learn how our mammalian vagal pathway is linked to our facial expressions, how past trauma can affect your physical state from a polyvagal perspective, and why we need to respect and honor our feelings and bodies. (Please listen to the podcast episode or read the transcript to hear explanations, stories, and examples.) Bio:  Stephen W. In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom continues his discussion with professor of psychiatry and neuroscientist Stephen Porges about the polyvagal theory. Dr. Porges explains the transformative power of feeling safe to keep us healthy. Using clinical examples from the treatment of pain and trauma, he illustrates how the nervous system responds to cues of safety or threat in the environment to alter the body's physiology and either promote or inhibit healing.  He discusses how these responses act as a kind of co-regulation in our social interactions with others as a critical component of building trust.Stephen W. Porges, Ph.D. is Distinguished University Scientist at Indiana University where he is the founding director of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium in the Kinsey Institute. He is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina, and Professor Emeritus at both the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Maryland.  He served as president of the Society for Psychophysiological Research and the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences and is a former recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Development Award. He is the originator of the Polyvagal Theory, a theory that emphasizes the importance of physiological state in the expression of behavioral, mental, and health problems related to traumatic experiences.

As we were walking, I started thinking about CONNECTION, and how important it is. And then a flood of questions entered my mind...Where does connection come from? Why can I just stare at my baby for hours? Why do I feel so calm in her presence? The answer lies in your nervous system, specifically, the Vagus nerve.  And there's a scientific explanation to the effect connection has on our lives. Initially, Dr. Porges thought he discovered a way of measuring the Vagal influence: when the body is regulating, it’s in a good physiological state, resilient, and can survive delivery. In Part II of our exploration of polyvagal theory, with psychotherapists and co-hosts of this podcast, Ann Kelley, Patty Olwell and Sue Marriott we talk about strategies to help us engage our ventral vagal or social engagement system to calm our nervous system. We review how our nervous system appraises safety and danger. Then they discuss how to harness the knowledge and make it usable in real life. Polyvagal Theory Revisited Stephen Porges developed polyvagal theory, which explains our nervous system’s response to stress or danger. It describes a three part hierarchical system. The first, the ventral vagal is described in the podcast as a safety system or green zone. The second is activation. This is the sympathetic nervous system getting us ready for fight or flight. In the podcast described as an activated red zone. The third system is the dorsal vagal, which is immobilization or freeze. In the podcast described as an immobilized red zone. How Does Polyvagal Theory Work? The theory describes how we assess stress or danger based on cues in the environment. If we begin to sense stress our sympathetic or activation system begins to kick in. Then we attempt to engage our ventral vegal or social engagement system (the green zone). If that doesn’t work, the threat persists or intensifies we employ our activation system. We get ready to take action. Our heart rate increases to prepare us for fight or flight. Then if the threat is too large or we can’t escape the system of last resort, the dorsal vagal takes over. How Understanding Polyvagal Theory Can Help Me Regulate Stress Today most of us are not chasing saber-toothed tigers through the jungle. So the stressors and dangers we face are often interpersonal. We can often because of our own personal histories misread the environmental cues. If we walk into a party and don’t see a familiar face our sympathetic nervous system can get activated. If we understand from polyvagal theory that we have a social engagement system and that engaging it will calm us down, we then have strategies that we can use. We can look for a friendly face and start a conversation. We can find someone we know at the party and make contact. This understanding gives us choices when we want to calm ourselves or help our children, partners or friends calm their nervous systems. Important Concepts Vagus Nerve – 10th cranial nerve and part of the parasympathetic nervous system. Has two branches and acts as a brake on the sympathetic nervous system. Ventral Vagal – The newer myelinated branch of the vagus that developed in mammals. Controls the social engagement system. Dorsal Vagal- More primitive unmyelinated branch of the vagus nerve. Acts as a Sympathetic Nervous System – part of the autonomic nervous system that controls activation. Parasympathetic Nervous System – part of the autonomic nervous system that inhibits the sympathetic nervous system Neuroception – Porges term that describes how our nervous system assesses whether people or places are safe, dangerous or life threatening RESOURCES: Additional resources for this episode: Stephen W. Important ConceptsVagus Nerve – 10th cranial nerve and part of the parasympathetic nervous system. Has two branches and acts as a brake on the sympathetic nervous system. Ventral Vagal – The newer myelinated branch of the vagus that developed in mammals. Controls the social engagement system. Dorsal Vagal- More primitive unmyelinated branch of the vagus nerve. Unpack the science behind the polyvagal theory, with psychotherapists and co-hosts of this podcast, Ann Kelley, Patty Olwell and Sue Marriott as they explore how our nervous system appraises safety and danger. Then they discuss how to harness the knowledge and make it usable in real life. What Is Polyvagal TheoryStephen Porges developed polyvagal theory, which explains our nervous system’s response to stress or danger. How Does Polyvagal Theory WorkThe theory describes how we assess stress or danger based on cues in the environment. Then if the threat is too large or we can’t escape the system of last resort, the dorsal vegal takes over. How Understanding Polyvagal Theory Can Help Me Regulate StressToday most of us are not chasing saber-toothed tigers through the jungle.
