U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's plan to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico is causing leaders here to come out strongly. The prime minister says he had a “good call” with Trump. But the premiers are worried, and so are farmers, energy workers, exporters and others who watch the relationship closely or depend on trade. Trump says he wants to combat drugs and illegal immigration, but the tariffs are likely to punish the U.S. too. And: Israel's prime minister is supporting a ceasefire deal in Lebanon. The ceasefire is expected to take effect at 4 a.m. local time Wednesday. Netanyahu says this ceasefire — which will mean an end to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah — will allow Israel to focus on fighting Hamas and Iran, and on freeing Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Lebanon's prime minister has also welcomed the deal.Plus: An election in Nova Scotia, Paul Bernardo parole hearing, a vote on coal mining in Crowsnest Pass, and more.

What do you think the odds are of Susan Smith getting out of prison after nearly three decades behind bars for the horrific drowning of her two children? This week on Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski, former felony prosecutor Eric Faddis dives into the complexities of Smith's upcoming parole hearing. After claiming for days that her children had been kidnapped, the chilling truth emerged: a mother's desperate deception ended in tragedy. As the parole board prepares to review her case for a third time, the conversation turns to the haunting nature of her crimes, her alleged mental health struggles, and the cultural shifts surrounding incarceration since the early '90s. Faddis discusses how the legal system's view on such cases can feel arbitrary, questioning whether society is ready to forgive—or if Smith's actions will forever weigh heavily against her. With the father of the children expected to advocate against her release, will Susan Smith finally be denied parole once again? As we await the decision, one can't help but wonder: can someone who has committed such a heinous act ever truly be rehabilitated? #SusanSmith #TrueCrime #EricFaddis #ParoleHearing #MentalHealth #JusticeSystem #HiddenKillers Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Federal prosecutors have attempted to tie Indigenous political prisoner Leonard Peltier to the murder of fellow AIM activist, Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash. It is a frequent allegation that has relied on weak evidence and the charges of paid federal informants. In this episode, TRN Podcast co-host Nick Estes (@nickwestes) looks at several sources of information from key Indigenous activists who knew Leonard Peltier and Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash to the FBI's own knowledge of her murder at the time it happened and federal prosecutors' initial hesitancy to take up the case. Power our work here: www.patreon.com/redmediapr ------ Below is the text of Hank Adams' 2020 Facebook post, shortly before his passing: Note: Adams is responding to a 2016 APTN article in which Assembly of First Nations Chief Perry Bellegarde apologizes to Anna Mae Aquash's family. December 14, 2020 Intellectually dishonest hate-monger Paul DeMain has reignited his campaign to assure denial of any Executive Clemency to LEONARD PELTIER, 76, at any time before Leonard's next scheduled Parole Hearing in Year 2024 with a continued misuse and abuse of the December 1975 gunshot death of ANNA MAE AQUASH and the unconscionable exploitation of Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash's children. Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde makes significant points in this 2016 article in which the 1975 Aquash death became the center point in President Barack Obama's decision to deny Clemency to Peltier: “I regret that my statement caused some hurt and pain and I apologize for the pain I caused her [Denise Maloney Pictou] and her family,” said Bellegarde. “That wasn't my intent.” Bellegarde said he still would like to see Peltier freed. He said the case is a separate issue from AIM's execution of Aquash. “I called for that (Peltier's release) because there is an injustice there,” said Bellegarde. “So I will continue to advocate for that.” Bellegarde said two previous AFN national chiefs have made the same call which is also backed by Amnesty International and prominent individuals like the Dalai Lama. Peltier was extradited from Canada to the U.S. in December 1976. Warren Allmand, Canada's solicitor general at the time of Peltier's extradition, has since stated the F.B.I submitted false information to have Peltier extradited." DeMain's posting of Aquash daughter Denise Maloney Pictou's December 12, 2020, renewed accusations against Leonard Peltier and DeMain's hated AIM organization [re-Posted here in Comment 1] are the beginning of a campaign to assure that 2020 President-Elect Joe Biden will not grant Executive Clemency to Leonard Peltier. In death and posthumously, Anna Mae has been made a sainted heroine. But between 1972 and November 14, 1975, Anna Mae's ways were AIM's ways. AIM's ways - good and bad - were without qualification or reservation Anna Mae's ways, by choice. At NCAI in November, American Indian Press Association's (AIPA) Richard LaCourse told me of his meeting with Dennis Banks, Leonard Peltier, Kamook Banks, and Anna Mae just before his coming to Portland for NCAI.. Anna Mae then had indicated no distress nor given any indication that she was being held prisoner or against her will. On November 14, 1975, the four AIM "leaders" only broke apart because of the Ontario, Oregon stopping of their [Marlon Brando] recreational vehicle by armed Oregon police. A couple days later, Leonard Peltier was transported (through Franks Landing) from Portland into British Columbia (by associates of mine, who did not inform me then of their activity). He spent the next month in the locale he was taken to and remained incommunicado with U.S. colleagues until later, at least until he traveled to Small Boy's camp in Alberta, Canada. That is where the RCMP and FBI picked up on Leonard - long after Anna Mae Aquash's death in the second week of December 1975. Memorandum in the FBI's Denver Office dated as early as December 19, 1975 disclosed Anna Mae Aquash had been killed - although the FBI would feign ignorance of the death and the corpse identity for more than the next three months. The December 1975 memos identified the killers as John "Boy" Graham, Arlo Looking Cloud, and Theda Nelson Clarke - although none of the three were indicted through the next 28 years. The Looking Cloud trial was held in December 2004; Graham's in 2010 - lapses of 29 and 35 years. Theda Nelson - a likely FBI Informant in December 1975 - (on mental competency findings) did not go to trial. Clark died at age 87 in 2011. Although a lead prosecutor opened the Leonard Peltier trial in Fargo, North Dakota on March 16, 1977 declaring: "AIM is not on trial."; both AIM and Leonard Peltier were made the main 'defendants' in the 2004 and 2010 trials for the killing of Anna Mae Aquash! If there was ever a case where all parties - prosecution, defense and all witnesses - acted in friendly collusion to 'convict' undefended and absent non-parties [1st Leonard Peltier; 2nd AIM] - the Looking Cloud and Graham trials were such cases. The fodder for the trial's conspiratorial claptrap largely was wrung from the mind and imagination of Paul DeMain in his relentless vendetta against AIM leaders and most creatively against Leonard Peltier. Many of his unsubstantiated claims were rejected by author Steven Hendricks when writing "The Unquiet Grave" (2007). DeMain "Timelines" for Anna Mae Pictou have since focused on the AIM Convention in New Mexico just prior to the Jumping Bull Compound deaths of FBI Agents on Pine Ridge on June 26, 1975 leading to the 1977 life sentence convictions of Peltier. The design is intended to prejudice considerations against any grant of parole or clemency for Peltier. Canada's Assembly of First Nation is correct in declaring the "execution" of Anna Mae Aquash and the pursuit of "freedom" for Leonard Peltier on compassionate and humanitarian grounds are "separate issues." They are correct in continuing their support for Executive Clemency through offices of both the Canadian Prime Minister and any U.S. President. What satisfaction can President Elect Biden derive from side-stepping all humanitarian and compassionate considerations for Leonard Peltier through a first term, deferring any favorable consideration to the scheduled Parole Hearing in 2024? The Pardons Office of a bureaucratic and prejudiced Justice Department housing the FBI has already failed the last four Presidents of the United States in this matter! Will retribution finally end if Leonard Peltier is still alive in 2024 and then 80 years old? Indians of Western Washington who transported Leonard Peltier to Canada on or about November 17, 1975, and Indians of British Columbia who hosted and concealed him for the next month or until beyond when the FBI first was informed of Anna Mae's death and the identity of her killers can attest to Leonard's movements and communications (record) that wholly absolve Leonard Peltier of any direct or indirect role in the December 1975 murder of Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash.

Case Update: Beth Brodie's story. Beth's killer is up for parole in May. CALL TO ACTION below....I first shared Beth's story in the spring of 2021 in episode 16. I am from the small town of Groveland, Massachusetts, Beth and I went to the same school, walked those same halls. What happened to her stayed with me. I think of her every time I drive through my old hometown, about her family, and how they had to drive by the house where she took her last breath on November 18, 1992 when she was just 15 years old. Beth's killer was a teenager, someone who she had been friendly with for a short time and whose feelings she did not share. Teenage love, for lack of a better term, is fleeting. He had left Groveland and moved to Peabody. Learning that Beth did not return his affection, he decided to act in a brutal and merciless way. There was no evidence of abuse between the two teenagers. Beth's family knew of nothing that could have led to what happened to Beth that day. The boy had been around the Brodie home and acted in what was best described as shy around adults. Now, 30 years later, Beth's killer, is seeking parole with a hearing scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 2024. Once again, Beth's family is facing the prospect of this man being released. It is retraumatizing to a family who has had to live with the reality of their child being violently taken from them.Your help is needed! Revisiting the story of Beth Brodie, Crime of the Hometown Kind, Groveland, Massachusetts, with Beth's brother, Sean Aylward. First released on May 5, 2021. Sean, Beth's brother, and I plan a follow-up to get the status of her case this week.Expect episode 62 soon. Her killer is up for parole! CALL TO ACTION below.... I first shared her story in the spring of 2021. I am from the small town of Groveland, Massachusetts, went to the same schools as Beth did, and what happened to her has stayed with me. I think of her ever single time I drive through my old hometown, about her family that remained in the same neighborhood where Beth was killed, and how they have to drive by the house where she took her last breath on November 18, 1992 when she was just 15 years old. This is more than about retelling the tragic events of that day, it is about the painfully intimate journey of heartbreak for a family navigating the brutality that took Beth from them. The emotional weight of juvenile sentencing laws that shift with time, and the Brodie family's advocacy efforts as they again face the potential parole of Beth's killer. Beth's killer, 16-years-old at the time of her murder, is seeking parole with a hearing scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 2024. “And I will pour out mine indignation upon thee. I will blow against thee in the fire of my wrath, and deliver thee into the hand of brutish men, and skilful to destroy” McManus returns to Oz looking to settle the tension between Burr and Morales. A ceasefire is called as Augustus attempts to explain himself to Burr, but Burr casts Augustus out of the homeboys. With his plan scrapped and his troops numbers dwindling, Burr sets a ‘Search & Destroy' mission for new podmate Edward. Clayton is causing problems in Unit J as he continues his feud with Alvin, this time over the origins of Alvin's surname, but now he's having issues with Johnny now too. Seeking a break from the tensions, Johnny has a visit with his wife Abby. Things appear to go well and they arrange to bring their son to the next visit. Clayton however has other ideas for Johnny upon his return, leading to Leo hitting the bottle hard. Beecher struggles to cope with Keller being gone from Oz. With the possibility of his Parole Hearing having a favourable outcome, as well as a blooming relationship with Katherine, a phone call with Keller brings him crashing right back down again. As Schillinger plays with his dolls, a chance encounter with a fellow inmate leads to questions about his new granddaughter's bloodline. Said looks to have Robson tried along with Carl Jenkins for his attempted murder and the murder of Leroy. Feeling as though he can talk some sense into the young inmate, Said asks to meet with Carl, which is met with resistance from Leo. Finding a loophole, Said confides in Cloutier to meet with Carl instead, which raises the ire of the Aryans and Schillinger in particular. Vahue heads to the Basketball to escape Unit B's Rat. Being gone from the NBA has affected Vahue's skills somewhat. Luckily for him McManus is on the scene to give him some pointers. Failing to take McManus advice (because why would he?), Vahue dismisses the man from the “White Boy City League”, leading to McManus to challenge Vahue to a Best of 3 Series on the Gym's Basketball Court. Vahue gets saddled with Busmalis as a teammate while McManus (eventually) teams up with Dave Brass, a CO from Unit B with some skills. As Moses execution approaches, his request to meet with those who are to receive his donated organs donated is accepted as he meets Jiffy Karras. Feeling a sense of purpose despite his impending death, Moses heads to Benchley Memorial for a routine examination. Padraic Connelly arrives at Oz awaiting his Deportation Hearing. Ryan tries to buddy up to his fellow Irish, but Padraic prefers to be a lone wolf. After an altercation with Jimmy and Jim in the Gym, Padraic receives news about his hearing. Ryan receives some (potentially) life changing family news from Suzanne. Things go from bad to worse following a scrap between Cyril and Jia, which leaves Jia in a coma. As McManus motions for Cyril to be transferred to the Connelly Institute, splitting the brothers and endangering Cyril “lifeline to reality”, Arif decides to finally come forward about witnessing Ryan murder Patrick Keenan. Facing the prospect of a trip to Death Row should he be convicted of Keenan's murder, Ryan asks Gloria to help he and Cyril escape. Also on this episode: a quick catch-up on what I've been up to since the last episode, Jia spends an ungodly amount of time in the Em City Cage, some questions about Oz's Inmate Uniform Policy, McManus facilitates Omar's return to Em City by forgiving him for the stabbing incident, what would you do in Orpheus' position?, Master P tries to add ‘play in the NBA' to his business empire, some poor penmanship with The Aryans, Not That John Carpenter goes for the top prize on Up Your Ante and I enlist OSW Review's Jay hunter (“HELLOOOOO!”) with some help with McManus' attempted Irish. AP correspondent Julie Walker reports on John Lennon's Killer Parole Hearing
We are going to learn what it like to serve 31 years in prison and then be subject to our stifling parole system As a desperate 17yo juvenile our guest William committed a robbery and he was tried as an adult that led to a 31yr long incarceration in the state of California. Today if he committed the same crime he would likely not have been sentenced as an adult or served no more than seven years. Now out of prison in 2019 and having gone through parole, William is passionate about helping others and is living his purpose as the voice of system-impacted individuals that are now in a re-entry program. His experience with law enforcement, prison and parole, qualifies him to create a responsive narrative to reform system-based policies and laws. Here is some more info about our guest He's been appointed to the Reentry Council as: The Sentencing Commissioner; resides as the co-chair on the Legislation, Policy, and Practices subcommittee; and a member of the Direct Services subcommittee. He has just been appointed to the San Francisco Sheriff Oversight Board. He volunteers his time with several organizations dedicated to system impacted people: United Playaz, The Adachi Project, Marin Shakespeare Company, and the former host of One Community One Mic for All Of Us Or None. He is now the Exec Director of Life After Next - https://www.lifeafternext.org... and they're looking for people to invest in the lives of others. In this episode of Moving Past Murder, host Collier Landry reflects on how his mother would be turning 77 years young next Wednesday, September 28th. Naturally, this turns his thoughts back to his father, who still remains incarcerated for her murder. After a recent discussion with fellow survivor Terra Newell (of Dirty John fame), Collier realized that over the time his father has been incarcerated, he has spent at least a year of his life in prison. • After a friend tells Collier about the Netflix documentary "Sins of Our Mother", Collier reflects on his mother would have aged gracefully in her senior years. • A message via Instagram inspires Collier to share how he moves on with his own trauma after the messenger saw his film 'A Murder in Mansfield' • Collier then opens a series of letters from his father from the late 2000s, as he was seeking his first parole hearing and to be released from prison after serving only 21 years for the murder.
