In their latest collection of poems, Cave Canem Poetry Prize winner Brionne Janae dives into the deep, unsettled waters of intimate partner violence, queerness, grief, and survival. This event took place on July 6, 2023. “I've decided I can't trust anyone who uses darkness as a metaphor for what they fear,” poet Brionne Janae writes in this stunning new collection, in which the speaker navigates past and present traumas and interrogates familial and artistic lineages, queer relationships, positions of power, and community. Because You Were Mine is an intimate look at love, loneliness, and what it costs to survive abuse at the hands of those meant to be “protectors.” In raw, confessional, image-heavy poems, Janae explores the aftershocks of the dangerous entanglement of love and possession in parent-child relationships. Through this difficult but necessary examination, the collection speaks on behalf of children who were left or harmed as a result of the failures of their parents, their states, and their gods. Survivors, queer folks, and readers of poetry will find recognition and solace in these hard-wrought poems—poems that honor survivorship, queer love, parent wounds, trauma, and the complexities of familial blood. Season 2 of (Super) Power to the People kicks off with an episode devoted to throwing a spotlight on some recently released, dope comics by Black creators.
I grew up on the west side of baltimore and was a bit of an inside kid. Always loved watching TV and movies and Playing Video games. One day my mother got me a copy of Hardware #1 written by Dwayne McDuffie. At the time I had no idea how big it was to have a comic book done by an all black company. From here is was hooked. My dad would always take me to stores and I'd pick out what I would want was always drawn to the Black Panther who I consider my favorite hero. Kept reading and watching Tv and Movies through college (I went to NCA&T AGGIE PRIDE) and loved talking all things pop culture with friends. From there I feel in love with short form content and liked giving movie news, but this decided to do something different and educate a little on the history of Black Comics in different media forms. Now I try and share something every day letting people know the plethora of comic characters and stories behind how some of the best black super hero movies get made or what could have been.links to follow social media https://www.facebook.com/TheDAXperience/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdO0Nj1OUdW5hTfiQVUxaSA

Dear Friends, Family, Revolutionaries, and the Uninitiated,Please pull out ya smores, popcorn, treats, snacks, and other goodies. We are sitting down to the story of Afrofuturism with the story teller of our modern age, and the caretaker shepherding the arts and knowledge. The conscious effort to further expanding arts, especially Afrocentric art; is paramount to their life story. They bring with them the creativity, artistry, and intimate understanding of what our future holds when the picture staring back include- you. There is a serious consternation revolving not just the inclusion of melanated individuals. Not in simple "i's, ain't gots no"... but with layers and depth. Afro-futurism is a term that was coined by a british journalist to describe the genre of artistic creation that included a diverse character world filled with melanated individuals, however; when left to definitions given by others the truth is always ignorantly relayed. We give a real understanding of what Afrofuturism is, who is in it, why it matters to have such a thing, and the significance of seeing yourself in the pages, pictures, music, and other arts we enjoy. Thank you Doc Friyali, for sitting down to a meal, a mind, and bringing some heart; to a story much needed and more importantly shared.Thank you JD, fellow Afro Nerd, it was a pleasure to shed the coat of imposterism with you.Isaiah aka 3rdI truly enjoy the Montego cover, blessing the cords and our ears- much obliged.Madison Gray the art work epitomizes the conversation, and includes a goddess. Today's Guest: Del Harrison, comedian Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with comedian Del Harrison by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of men and women suffering from a bad outbreak of racism… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Del Harrison has some strongly held beliefs — about racism, tipping, men’s private parts and more. And it’s a good thing, too, because Del Harrison is a comedian. DEL HARRISON podcast excerpt: "Donald Trump, you can't go from running 'Celebrity Apprentice' to running the free world—we need experience! I can't wait till November 9 so the whole world can say, in unison, 'You're fired!'" Her job is to tell you what she thinks about the world around her, absorbing her personal reality and repackaging it to make you and me laugh at the absurdity of it all. She recently landed a residency at the The Lab, inside The Hollywood Improv. Her show, titled “Standup, Storytelling and Sangin'!” is a mix of standup comedians and storytellers, as well as a live band. To find out when she’ll need be onstage there – or in your town, check out the listings at her website at DelHarrison.com I watched a few minutes of Del Harrison video on her YouTube channel and burst out laughing. That’s all I needed to book her here. DEL HARRISON podcast excerpt: "When I first met Steve Harvey, I had just moved to New York. I came out of my tech support job, getting some lunch, and I saw him walking on the street. I went, 'Oh, my God -- Steve Harvey!' I said to him, 'I just started doing comedy!' He had a security guard with him, blocking me, like I was some old groupie! I'm like, 'Mofo, ain't nobody wants to f--k Steve Harvey! Come on, now!'" Key interview moments: • 11:40 Comedian Del Harrison can't wait to fire Donald Trump on Election Day; • 12:40 And with so many women coming out of the woodwork accusing Trump of sexual assault, Harrison can't tell the difference between him and Bill Cosby; • 26:50 Harrison was excited to meet comedian and TV star Steve Harvey on the streets of New York, except for his bodyguard. In this episode Brando Calrissian and Wednesdays Finest welcome Anthony Piper creator of Trill League (the ladies already know). Piper gives us the definition of Trill, Brando misquotes Rick Ross lyrics, and we get into the genesis of the Trill league project from a facebook post to a full blown comic series and overfunded kickstarter project. A hip hop parody of DC's Justice League, Anthony's project has gained thousands of fans (more importantly funders) and also more than a few detractors. So we get into a heavy convo on the the state of "Black Comics" and the freedom of creating outside the expected paradigm. We also chart Anthony's path as a self taught artist, changing careers, and collaborating with (Character Designer) Chase Conley.
