What if healing after trauma wasn't just about survival—but about creativity, reclamation, and transformation? Today's guest, Marlee Liss, is living proof that healing can look radically different than what we've been taught. After experiencing sexual violence, she was thrown into the justice system and quickly realized something: the traditional punitive approach wasn't leading to healing—it was retraumatizing. So, she did something groundbreaking.Marlee became the first person in North America to advocate for and successfully secure a court-ordered restorative justice process, requiring her assailant to undergo mandated therapy instead of incarceration. Through this process, she proved that true justice isn't always about punishment—it can be about deep, lasting accountability, healing, and even transformation. This is the second episode in my series on using creativity to change the world—because creativity isn't just for art. It's for how we think, how we heal, and how we rebuild broken systems.✨ From this conversation, you'll learn:The radical question that changed everything for Marlee—and how it can change your life, tooWhy the justice system often fails survivors—and what a real, healing alternative looks likeHow creativity can be used to solve even the world's toughest problemsThe surprising key to true healing: reclaiming joy, pleasure, and personal freedom-Remember to subscribe/follow the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. My guest Marlee Liss made history in the justice system when she fought for her sexual assault case to become the 1st in North America to conclude with restorative justice through the courts, instead of sending her assaulter to jail. In this episode, Marlee and I break down the problem with the current prison system and what else is possible. The idea of imprisonment, while preventing some people from even committing a crime in the first place, can also breed more suffering in our communities due to the consequences of the legal procedures themselves. The punitive system has a way of locking patterns of violence into communities without room for change, perpetuating trauma throughout society. Modern punitive processes tend to focus on the person who committed the crime and turn away from all else who were impacted by the event. Restorative justice is an alternative approach to prison in the legal system that includes healing for all involved. It is a process that seeks to repair harm by providing an opportunity for those harmed and those who take responsibility for the harm, to communicate about and address their needs in the aftermath of a crime. Not only is there an opportunity for healing the wounds that came as a result of the crime, but also for the pain that led to the crime being committed in the first place. Today, I am joined by the very cool, very funny, very smart Britt Williams Baker! Britt is a Harvard Business School graduate with a penchant for personal finance and a knack for keeping things fun. Britt started investing at the age of 8, and has since been making saving and investing easy for anyone to understand. Britt is a co-founder of Dow Janes, which started in order to close the financial gender gap. The Dow Janes is on a mission to build the financial confidence of women+ around the world! In this episode, we chatted about shame and how that shows up around money, why budgeting can be so darn hard, and that financial care IS self-care. Britt talks about why taking care of our finances can be a spiritual practice and some ways to approach your finances if you are new to this world. We also check in on why it is so crucial to bring financial education to women+ and why that gap exists. Britt gives lots of actionable tips, and I share too much about my underwear! Listen. We all know there's a problem with the way the legal system handles sexual assault cases. Anyone who has been through it or has heard about or read about a survivor's experience knows how horrible and retraumatizing the process can be. But what if there was a different way. A more human way. That's where restorative justice comes in.My guest on this episode is Marlee Liss, a sensuality coach and an advocate for restorative justice. Marlee is a survivor of sexual assault and was the first person in Canada and the U.S. to have a restorative justice resolution to her sexual assault case within the legal system. It is a fascinating story of her advocating for her needs after assault and getting to look her assailant in the eye and say and hear the things she needed to say and hear to heal. We also address some beliefs and misunderstandings around restorative justice.Restorative Justice! What do we know? Do We Know Things? On this week's episode, we have an incredibly inspiring story for you today!  Alexandra speaks with Marlee Liss, a sensual reclamation coach, speaker, author and restorative justice advocate.  She is a queer, sparkle-loving feminist and trailblazer.  Marlee made history in the justice system when her sexual assault case became the 1st in North America to conclude with restorative justice.  Since then, she has coached hundreds of women internationally in reclaiming sensuality and embodied leadership.Marlee has shared her voice via Forbes, Huff Post, Buzzfeed, Mel Robbins Show, and more. In addition, she is a powerful speaker and has presented/consulted for the US Military Sexual Assault Response Team, on an elite panel for the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, Fordham School of Law and more.  Currently, her story is being made into a documentary and scripted Hollywood series, as she works on her memoir. In this episode, you'll hear:What restorative justice is, its origins in the Indigenous, Jewish, and Mennonite cultures, and how it differs from the punitive justice system.Marlee's story of sexual assault and going through the process after the assault of navigating the punitive justice system while doing very deep healing work. How going through the punitive justice system and the process of the lead up to a criminal trial inspired Marlee to seek out restorative justice measures instead. How the experience of the restorative justice therapy process brought a human element and a heart element to a justice system that otherwise can be very dehumanizing and devoid of any presence of either. The power of story-telling and how telling our stories provides a sense of validation to not only ourselves, but our communities as well.Ideas on what the vision of embodied leadership looks like and how it avoids burnout, honors our feelings, takes anger and recognizes it as passion and births creation from it, all while making huge, impactful changes in our communities. And more! Please note, that we do go into the story of Marlee's case and sexual trauma and what happened, so it's a tender one.  Many of us have gone through these experiences, and it can bring stuff up, and it's also really healing, so we encourage you to listen even if it feels a little edgy.  Please make sure you have some support around you and take good care.

My friends, I am extremely excited to present my guest for today, Marlee Liss. This has been one of my most favourite episodes I've done as an interview so far. I cried many times and I feel the message that Marlee has to share is such an important one. Marlee has an absolutely extraordinary story. She was sexually assaulted when she was 21 years old and the court proceedings that followed actually concluded in restorative justice. Basically this is where the focus is on repair rather than punishment and it is not something you hear about very often. In fact, Marlee's case was the first in North America to resolve in restorative justice. I found this conversation to be truly inspiring and resonated with me on so many levels.Marlee now helps women claim sacred sensuality so they can live in self-love and inner wholeness. As a women's embodied love coach, author and retreat facilitator, she has worked internationally to inspire transformative healing. Marlee's work is deeply shaped by her background in social work, trauma-informed yoga, somatic sex education, and body image facilitation.
