My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Ally Dalsimer, author of the book, It's Okay Not to be Fabulous Every Day. Ally is a published author, award-winning environmental expert, former political candidate, and an experienced life coach. Life highlights include traveling the world, rescuing 7 cats, raising two children, and surviving the death of her husband and mother. Her breadth of life experience infuses her ‘Fabulous' book with incredible insights and lessons learned. Ally has undergraduate degrees in English and Psychology from the University of Richmond, and a Master's in Public Policy, Environmental Law and Economics Track from Georgetown University. She lives in Virginia with her rescue cat Pooma. She has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles, technical reports, proceedings, brochures, and now a book! She is a member of ALLi, SCBWI, TWSA, and AAUW. Her new book, Jack & Ginger: An Unexpected Friendship will be available in 2024! In my book review, I stated It's Okay Not To Be Fabulous Every Day by Ally Dalsimer is an inspirational read reminding us that although we should have goals and strive to reach them, we don't have to be at the top of our game every single day. In fact, it isn't possible to do so. When that is our aim, we are sure to become disappointed in ourselves. Ally began this book as a book of 'lessons learned' for her children as they began to move away from home and start their adult lives. In the end, she realized that everyone needs these bits of wisdom. Each chapter has quotes from sources you will recognize, such as Martin Luther King, Jr, but she also throws in Yoda. In fact, Ally is willing to share truth wherever she finds it to help each of us live a more fulfilled life. I think this book would be a perfect source of daily inspiration and could easily be used for prompts for daily journal writing. It is not a 'one and done' book. Instead, it will stay on your bedside table for easy access whenever life seems just a little bit too hard. In this episode we explore the continuing global gender gap in STEM fields when it comes to studying engineering and pursuing STEM careers. Globally, women make up only 28% of the workforce in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and it doesn't get any better at the country level: in the U.S., the figure stands at only 24%; at 17% in the European Union; 16% in Japan; and 14% in India. This episode's guest is Parimala (“Pari”) Lennartz, VP of Engineering at MPOWER Financing which is also the generous sponsor of this episode. Pari is a widely recognized woman leader in the Financial Technology (Fintech) industry, was recently named to a list of top women in the Fintech industry by The Fintech Times, and is also a vocal advocate for increasing the number of girls and women who pursue STEM fields. Episode themes: Pari's personal and professional journey as a STEM student in India, to coming to the U.S. as an international student, and to eventually becoming the VP of Engineering at a major Fintech firm The persistent “leaky pipeline” due to which women continue to drop out of engineering education and careers How MPOWER's loan model is having a unique impact on female international students from Global South countries When it comes to STEM education and careers, do women in emerging markets or Global South countries face more challenges than their counterparts in the U.S.? As a top woman leader in the Fintech industry, what Pari is doing to advance gender parity in STEM, and her excellent educational and professional advice for girls and women who dream of being scientists and engineers Episode Resources: Follow Pari and MPOWER Financing on LinkedIn Read Pari's op-ed in CEO World Magazine Listen to Episode 12 with Gloria Blackwell of AAUW and Episode 14 with Fereshteh Forough of Code to Inspire Check out MPOWER Financing's Social Impact Report My book: America Calling: A Foreign Student in a Country of Possibility Sign up for America Calling: my take on the intersection of education, culture and migration Connect with me: LinkedIn, Twitter Episode sponsor: This episode was made possible by the generous support of MPOWER Financing which provides no-cosigner loans and scholarships for international, DACA, and refugee students. Connie Goddard has reimagined who she is for her entire life. One thing remains constant: her love for writing and for history. Connie lived in Chicago for most of her life; she writes about the city's history, that of the Dakotas where her family is from, and New Jersey, where she now lives. Industrial education programs in all three places are the subject for her current major project: a book called Learning for Work, which will be published next summer by a major academic press.A few years after receiving her Ph.D. at age 60, Connie joined the Peace Corps, where she taught English to children in Romania. Afterward, she resettled in New Jersey and taught at a community college; there she had an opportunity to teach English and history to incarcerated men, an experience that inspired her book. From 1980 until 2009, Connie wrote for many national publications and worked as an administrator and adjunct professor at several prominent Chicago-area colleges and universities. As a scholar, Connie is primarily interested in schooling during the Progressive Era, particularly the work of Chicago's Ella Flagg Young and her colleague John Dewey. Both were leaders who changed the way people thought about schools and the meaning of education. Connie claims that, though they worked together over a century ago, their insights remain pertinent today, especially as our society is rethinking the necessity of a college education for all.Today, Connie cares for her husband and utilizes a room at the back of her house where she concentrates on work that totally involves her. She doesn't anticipate ever running out of projects: as a volunteer, they include heading education programs for her local branch of AAUW and raising money for Covenant House, which offers assistance to homeless youth in her community. “I do not anticipate ever running out of projects involving research in the areas I am interested in.”Connect with Connie:Website: https://ConnieGoddard.comEmail: conniegoddard@gmail.com

1. Love and MoneyKim emphasizes that money is not inherently evil, despite the baggage and negative stories people may have around it due to lack of conversation and openness about it in their childhood and family settings.Kim emphasizes that money is not inherently evil, but rather greed is the problem. She also notes that money reveals more of who you already are, which is important for listeners to understand because it can make everything else seem easier in the conversation.2. Self-Concept and ResponsibilityKim Curtis mentions that her mother's priority for her children was to ensure they received an education, as it was something that could never be taken away, which was important to her because it was something that had happened to her mother.3. Money and Natural Money LawKim Curtis emphasized that money is looking for you and it's important to bring this idea to the world, which was discussed as a paradigm shift in the green room. She also mentioned her interest in this topic and encouraged everyone to let this idea land.Kim Curtis explains that there are two laws of money, the human-made laws which are linear and goal-oriented, and the other law which is finding the money that is looking for you, which she had to uncover starting with a red ticket and the gift of love.Who is Kim Curtis?Kim Curtis is a nationally recognized wealth management advisor and speaker. Femmi has been built to empower women through movement, connection and education. It isn't a moment in time, we are driving for awareness, support, resource and recognition every single day. Today we wanted to drop in a short episode about our take on International Womens Day.This year it is thought that Embrace Equity is the 2023 theme - but in actual fact the IWD theme globally led by the UN is DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality. The focus is on digital technologies contributing to gender biases and widening the economic and social inequalities for women. The UN are aiming to build a safer, more inclusive & more equitable digital future. We personally love this theme as it is close to our heart, being a Femtech company that plays in the science and sporting space. Jill's Cauliflower Soup Recipe: EASY CAULIFLOWER SOUP INGREDIENTS 1 head cauliflower, about 2 lbs. Salt Pepper Unsalted butter (optional, recommended) - you can sub olive oil or a high quality vegan butter like Earth Balance, if you like OPTIONAL TOPPING IDEAS: Drizzle of olive oil or sesame oil, crumbled blue cheese, parmesan, za'atar YOU WILL ALSO NEED: Medium saucepan, blender Total Time: 10 Minutes Servings: 4 servings Kosher Key: Pareve or Dairy Remove the leaves and tough core from the cauliflower. Chop into small florets and carefully clean them. In a medium saucepan, bring 1 quart (4 cups) of water to a boil. Stir in 2 tsp of salt till dissolved. Pour in the cauliflower florets. Bring the water back to a boil and cover. Let the cauliflower cook for about 5 minutes till very soft and tender. Remove the florets from their cooking water using a slotted spoon; reserve the salted cooking water. Place the cooked cauliflower into a blender, filling it halfway. Carefully pour in cooking water, adding till it reaches about halfway up the cooked cauliflower. Cover the blender carefully and blend, scraping the sides as needed, until the soup becomes a smooth puree. You may need to add more cooking water to achieve a soup-like texture. The longer you blend, the more silky and smooth the soup becomes. Add salt, pepper, and butter to taste. I use about 1 tbsp butter (or I've used up to 2 Tbsp) for a whole head of cauliflower (1/2 tbsp per batch). Salt is your friend here, if the soup is tasting bland don't be afraid to add more. You can also add some good quality olive oil or Earth Balance instead of butter if you'd like a richer flavor without dairy. Also add ground fennel. Repeat process with the remaining batch of cauliflower. Serve soup hot. Leftovers will keep for 1-2 days in a covered tupperware container; soup will need to be stirred after reheating. From the Canton Public Library: The Canton Chapter of the American Association of University Women invited Stonehill Professor, Tracy Rosebrock to speak about her research on CMV; a leading cause of preventable deafness in children. This young researcher talks too about the AAUW scholarship, life changing as women's careers are not always a straight shot, as children and family can stall a woman researcher's trajectory, making research funding difficult to get. But Rosebrock is also concerned about the ignored virus's impact because, though the medical establishment does not want to "unnecessarily worry women" because there is so little treatment, Rosebrock argues that it's also very preventable (hand washing and not to share fluids with children while pregnant) and so pregnant women need to understand this virus. A fascinating discussion on the science, the impact narrow standards can have on information women get, and also how the AAUW helps women researchers and Rosebrock's commitment to giving pregnant women agency through knowledge. This program was taped and edited by Ed McDonough for CCTV.

In this episode, host David Pluviose sits down with Gloria Blackwell, CEO of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), a nonprofit advancing gender equity through advocacy, education, and research. As only the second Black woman in 140 years to lead AAUW, Gloria discusses the importance of representation in STEM and higher ed leadership as well as living the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion within her own organization. KEY POINTS: - Gloria Blackwell's path to leadership in the AAUW - The unique vantage point Gloria provides as an African American woman - AAUW's strategies, initiatives, and vision to achieve “equity for all” - The student loan debt crisis, specific to Black women - How to increase opportunities for women in STEM fields - An institution's responsibility to commit to equity in higher education QUOTABLES: “Representation is so important for young women, girls, and boys - to see that African American women can step up as leaders and that our perspectives are incredibly valued.” “We are doing research around so many of the topics we have been working on for decades that we thought by now would have reached a solution, that would have provided a greater sense of equity for women. And it just hasn't come true.” “The promise of economic security, the promise that if you get a higher education degree and what that will mean, it's certainly not come to fruition. A black woman with a bachelor's degree on average earns less than a white man with a high school education.” OTHER RESOURCES: About Gloria Blackwell - aauw.org/about/leadership/gloria-l-blackwell AAUW's CEO Gloria Blackwell: "There Needs to Be a Reckoning." - diverseeducation.com/leadership-policy/article/15291195/there-needs-to-be-a-reckoning-aauws-ceo-gloria-blackwell-on-gender-equity-in-higher-education-leadership PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: Watch this video and others on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/user/Diversediversedivers Visit the Diverse: Issues In Higher Education website: diverseeducation.com Or follow us on social media: Twitter: twitter.com/diverseissues Instagram: instagram.com/diverseissuesinhighereducation Facebook: facebook.com/DiverseIssuesInHigherEducation/ Linkedin: linkedin.com/company/diverse-issues-in-higher-education Transcription services are available upon request. Kim Curtis is a nationally recognized wealth management advisor and speaker. After Kim's parents got divorced, Kim's mom was left in a tough situation which necessitated that Kim got subsidized school lunches. Imagine the shame of being a young girl having to slip the cafeteria aid the red ticket which indicated that her family didn't have the money. We talk about how she went from this, to then getting student loans for law school, and promptly defaulted on them. Of course, her upbringing would lead her to not know how to manage her money. She was checked out, overwhelmed, and didn't know what to do.But miraculously, an anonymous donor paid a $1000 payment on her loan account, and that was the sign that Kim needed. Her gift made Kim stop and realize the untrue story she had been telling herself—that money was scarce, and she didn't deserve it.Thanks to that gift, Kim became conscious of her internal money talk and began to take her desire for money and the anxiety that surrounded it more seriously. Slowly, she began to believe in her ability to earn and manage money, and, in the process, the fear, anxiety, inaction, blame, and guilt she had around money slowly evaporated. She realized that she was being supported and endeavored to get right with her life and her money story. She first went to law school, then moved into the world of financial planning. She then had an epiphany moment where she saw that many in this industry are just 'sales people' for the products they are selling instead of being a fiduciary for the clients they are helping. That disconnect lead her to quit her job and then start her own firm.We talk about money being connected to lifestyle and impact. We also talk about her journey and how she got into alignment after feeling so disconnect with the work.Kim Curtis is a nationally recognized wealth management advisor and speaker. The year was 1881 when 17 women gathered for an unprecedented meeting called by recent college graduate Margaret Talbot and her mentor, Ellen Swallow Richards. Having defied social norms by attending college and pursuing careers they were determined to increase women's access to higher education. Their persistence led to the founding of the American Association for University Women, which has championed the civil, educational, and economic rights of women for 140 years. AAUW is devoted to achieving equal pay for women and to closing a pay gap, that disproportionately harms Black women and Latinas. Gloria Blackwell, who started her career educating girls in sub-Saharan Africa, led several of AAUW's signature initiatives, including its celebrated Fellowship program and trainings in salary negotiations, before becoming its President and CEO. She honors the women who came before her by engaging a new generation of girls in fighting stereotypes to excel in STEM, advocating for paid family leave, affordable childcare, and student loan forgiveness. She is supported by a community that includes 170,00 members, donors, and supporters. Like Gloria, they want all women to know their rights and their value.

Whether you are a new mother or a third-time momma, there is often tension and guilt that comes with returning to the workplace. The desire of wanting to be with your child can create fiction with the desire to return to your work as it was pre-motherhood. If you're guided by the narrative that all working moms are stressed mothers (especially after we have dealt with a pandemic and the subsesquent “Great Resignation”), take a deep breath, know there is hope and this episode may be just what you need to start considering new possibilities. Today's guest, Dr. Hilary Berger is the Founder of Work Like a Mother. She is a career counselor and Board Certified Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor who helps mothers with career planning and strategies for life after motherhood. “The work that I've designed is very intentionally designed to integrate small, attainable, realistic initiatives that rebuild confidence and give women a pathway back into the world that they want to be part of.” - Dr. Hilary Berger Key points discussed for working mothers: Feeling shut down, like you've lost your identity and confidence is normal, and you are not alone Having children doesn't mean not thriving and reaching career goals There are strategies you can implement to start the healing process to begin a new normal Career relevance is not a guilty desire. You can have flexibility and options while raising your children But the corporate landscape, culture and society do still need to change. Working moms still have struggles that corporate America is not fully prepared to deal with. While some companies make the effort to accommodate working mothers, the realities, opportunities, and standards across the board are not where they need to be for true equity. According to AAUW, mothers are 40% more likely than fathers to report that child care issues negatively affect their careers. And an astounding 96% of dads with jobs work full time in comparison to only 78% of mothers. Being a mother is beautiful and rewarding, and it doesn't mean choosing your children over your career. It also doesn't make feeling like you've lost yourself, your career and your passions an acceptable way of life. Connect with Dr. Hilary Berger: Website Instagram Connect with Nancy: NancySheed.com
This episode focuses on women and education globally and how creating opportunities for girls and women and ensuring equal access is directly linked to positive outcomes for societies. However, despite the significant progress for women over the past several decades, we find ourselves at an unfortunate point in time where women's fundamental rights are under threat, and where huge gender gaps continue to exist. It is also apparent that for many women their daily experience is based on the intersection of factors such as their gender, their skin color, their accent and their economic status. This episode's guest is Gloria L. Blackwell, the President and CEO of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and is someone who embodies what it means to be a champion for women's rights, especially through the vehicle of education. Gloria is also AAUW's main representative to the UN and has been the driving force behind AAUW's signature programs, including its salary negotiation trainings. Most notably, she has significantly expanded AAUW's outreach to girls and women of color. Among her many accomplishments is her 15-year management of AAUW's highly esteemed fellowships and grants program—awarding more than $70 million in funding to women scholars and programs in the U.S. and overseas. Since its founding, AAUW has supported the work of scientists like Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and astronaut, Judith Resnick, the second woman to travel in space. Episode Themes: Gloria's leadership of AAUW as only the second woman of color in the organization's 144-year history to do so, and what this means for diversity and inclusion Gloria's educational and professional journey and how early exposure to a foreign language sparked a lifelong commitment to women's issues globally, taking her from a Peace Corps experience in Africa, to a degree in international affairs, to working in the international education nonprofit sector Since 1888, AAUW has provided over $115 million in fellowships, grants and awards to 13,000 women from 150 countries. Gloria discusses why scholarships remain such an important intervention for equality for women and how AAUW supports women globally Barriers that women continue to face in higher education and the workforce and how AAUW contributes to the solution through its advocacy, education, and research. How Gloria motivates and inspires the girls and women in her life, and her top three pieces of advice and guidance The women that inspire Gloria each day. In anticipation of the Collingswood Book Festival, we thought it might be nice to have some of our senior editors and a couple of festival participants sit down for a proper chat about poetry and community, the anonymity of sending work out into the void and the anonymity of masks, and of course, bears and bathrobes. Enjoy and let us know what you think! Has the pandemic made writing more universal or melted our minds so terribly that our relationship to literature has changed? Will readings stay virtual and/or can we find a happy relationship between Zoom and IRL? In 2021 it's difficult for the average person to imagine that someone born and raised in the United States does not know how to use technology or navigate public transportation, or could be overcome with anxiety at the thought of crossing the street. Now imagine being in a position where it's frowned upon to ask for help in those situations or even ask questions because you're expected to just KNOW. I was that person 6 years ago. For over a decade I lived in what I call a time capsule. I was eventually released from one of NJ's state prisons but to an area, where I had never lived, at an age that people expected me to act in a manner that was foreign to me, and without the support needed for my survival. I couldn't get a job because I never had a resume, I couldn't get an apartment because I had no rental, employment, or credit history, I couldn't do the many things that would prevent me from going back to the system designed for me to fail. I'm not the only neighbor you pass that has a similar reentry experience. Hiding In Plain Sight: The Neighbors You Never Hear From is an audio series that will take you on the journey of reentry through the first-hand experiences of 6 people and where they are today.Tia Ryans is an advocate against the detrimental culminations of the criminal legal system. Four years ago, I applied online to the AAUW Women Artists Exhibition...you can imagine my excitement when I found out my landscape had been accepted into the show. As i sat in the opening and awards ceremony, i was overcome with feelings of validation and support as i listened to members of the local chapter who so graciously put on this labor of love to the community...their experiences as well as those of each trustee family member, who share about a woman relative who has lifted our art community...whose legacy was now supporting our current and future art community.I remember talking my husband Carl's ear off when i came home...that is...more than usual. It was a night not to be forgotten and in many ways, enough to sustain me in my vision and purpose for quite a while. Two years later i had a similar experience, this time, i sat next to my bestie, college roommate and lifelong friend Nancy Olson who is also an artist. It was such a treasure to share that night together, talking to juror Ashley Whitaker, and artist friends. This year of course, the show was canceled in a traditional way, meaning we weren't able to present our work in person at the UCCC and share in the magic at the opening and awards ceremony. If there is one thing that i've learned from the COVID quarantine it is that there is always another way...i talked with our local AAUW committee chair Marilyn Shearer, this show's juror Susan Anderson, artists Hilary Swingle and Nancy Andruk Olson, and we decided to share a bit of the magic of this show with your here in podcast land and of course on youtube.
