Welcome to this preview of the February shows and here is a short feature with award-winning guitarist and composer Jane Getter who releases her new album "Division World" this month. The full feature will follow in the next edition of the podcast. Led by guitarist, composer and singer Jane Getter, the album follows on from her acclaimed ‘Anomalia' album and features Jane's all-star band including keyboardist Adam Holzman, guitarist Alex Skolnick, bassist and singer Paul Frazier and drummer Gene Lake. Randy McStine (McStine & Minnemann, Porcupine Tree) also guests on vocals. Jane's band has carved out a niche at the intersection of rock, jazz, singer-songwriter, and metal styles with her masterful playing and complex and dynamic compositions and has dazzled audiences internationally. Packed with inspired songwriting and blazing instrumentals, ‘Division World' is the strongest album yet from Jane Getter Premonition. Jane says: "This album is a bit more song oriented than my previous work. The songs were written during the pandemic and the lyrics in a lot of the songs are reflections of the divisiveness and divisions happening in the world today. My regular band is featured - keyboardist Adam Holzman, guitarist Alex Skolnick, bassist and singer Paul Frazier and drummer Gene Lake. Randy McStine also guests on vocals. I feel Division World may be JGP's strongest album yet!" "Jane Getter's new album Division World is something quite notable in the multiplicity of genres & sub genres focused on progressive rock fusion guitar, modern jazz rock -contextual songs which do not shy away from a world of  trouble as it's context for her outstanding, fiery, & nuanced guitar playing - sung in her courageous, melodic, distinctive voice” - Vernon Reid.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classic-rock-news/message

It took me a while to track Roy down. Roy Venkataraman was a name I heard often when I was growing up in India in the 80' and 90's. I knew of him as the Indian guitar player for Bob Marley's legendary band the Wailers. He is widely considered reggae royalty, at least here in India. Roy started his career in Bombay, playing with some of the most popular bands in the country and then moved to the U.S where he garnered a wealth of experience playing and recording with artists including Atlantis and Keith Benson. He also played with groundbreaking indo-jazz band Divya at some of the biggest jazz festivals internationally including the Jazz Yatra in India. Roy also did concerts and worked with legendary pianist Louis Banks as his main sessions guitarist for a few years. His own album Lifelines features world renowned musicians Clive Stevens, Randy Brecker, Adam Holzman and Rachel Z amongst many others. Roy was invited to join Bob Marley's Wailers band and toured the world with them for years. He has scored music for well known film-maker Govind Nihalani and toured with Jeremy Spencer, co-founder of Fleetwood Mac and has also recorded with various well known artists worldwide. Roy now lives in Sydney, Australia. He has shared stages with Simply Red, Third World, Xzibit, Maxi Priest, Sly and Robbie, UB40, Lauryn Hill, Julian Marley, Steel Pulse and countless others and is guitarist with widely popular New Zealand reggae band House of Shem. I had the privilege of listening to some of his new music that's an eclectic mix of jazz, sufi and electronica. The music you hear in the intro to this podcast is from Roy's album Horizontal Life. I caught up with Roy and we traced his multi decade career from Mumbai to Sydney. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Follow Tales from the Road on Facebook | Instagram  Listen to more episodes on Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Google | Gaana |Audible Also check us out on our website tftrmedia.com Hosted and produced by Vikram Chandrasekar and Moving Pictures Media  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vikram aka The Concert Photographer is an internationally published concert photographer, videographer and podcast host.

F2K Ep. 15: Antibalas Trumpeter Jordan McLean

Jordan McLean on today's show, the composer, Antibalas trumpeter and co-founder of the System Dialing record label. Antibalas is the Brooklyn Afrobeat band that took the lead in re-popularizing the classic sound of Fela Kuti's revolutionary music beginning in the late 90s. Antibalas' success and McLean's probing playing has presented numerous musical opportunities for the trumpeter, including collaborations with David Byrne, Angélique Kidjo. Daptone Producer Mark Ronson, The Roots, St. Vincent, TV on the Radio and Valerie June. But it was his collaboration with jazz legend Ornette Coleman that led to this discussion. In 2009, McLean, Amir Zev, and Adam Holzman, partners in the band Droid, worked together with Ornette on a series of recordings that would be released late in 2014 under the title “New Vocabulary.” The recordings brought Coleman's saxophone into soundscapes unlike anything he had recorded over his 40 odd year career. I heard a few jazz purists complain, but that's certainly nothing new when it comes to the music of Ornette and I found the record to be hugely enjoyable, and not just for another rare chance to hear the octogenarian blow his horn. I found McLean to be an exceedingly earnest gentlemen and we hit it off with a great, free flowing conversation. He has a seeming ocean of varied music to draw from and we'll feature excerpts of his work with Antibalas, Droid, his solo trumpet and electronic project World Gone Mad and McLean's Piano Music & Song Trio. Over the course of our discussion we talk about McLean's NYC education, the early years of Antibalas, Lily Tomlin, McLean's time spent playing in the groundbreaking Tony-award winning Broadway play FELA!, a musical drama set during Fela last show at his legendary Nigerian nightclub The Shrine as well as McLean's collaboration with the great Ornette Coleman.

Adam Holzman, from the University of Texas, sits down with his old student (me) and reminisces about Segovia, Ghiglia, winning the GFA and getting a call from a student the night of his concert asking him where it was and how much it will cost. (also me age 19)

When I'm learning a new piece or searching the repertoire for something new, or maybe I just can't seem to make immediate sense of a score, I like to listen to a variety of interpretations via recordings. Over the years I've developed my “go to” list for recording artists, stellar players like David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Scott Tennant, Pepe Romero, and Adam Holzman. Cornering Holzman for a chat at the GFA symposium a couple of weeks ago, I finally had the chance to ask him about some those phenomenal albums. He is among the first classical guitarists to record on the Naxos label, and has recorded several series of complete works from a range of composers, including two discs of Sor, two discs of Ponce, many of Lauro's Venezuelan Waltzes, and most recently Mertz's Bardenklang. Not to mention that every time I see him live I love his playing too, and I'm often struck by his especially engaging approach to composers of the classical style like Carulli, Giuliani, and Sor, as he somehow transforms works I'm tired of, or unsure about, into music I adore. In this episode you'll hear him discuss his preparations for recording, some excellent practice techniques, his current experience teaching three GFA finalists, in addition to picking some great music from his ample library of recordings for us to listen to, including pieces by Sor, Ponce, and Lauro.
