#474: When Tiffany Aliche was in her 20's, she fell victim to a credit card scam. A crafty swindler convinced her to take out a cash advance against her credit card for $35,000. He said that he'd invest the money and produce Bernie Madoff-style returns. She was an inexperienced investor. She believed him. She never saw that money again. Aliche worked at a preschool. She didn't make much money to begin with. But matters worsened when the school shut down, and she lost her job. She fell behind on mortgage payments and lost her condo. In order to recover from such huge setbacks, she had to grapple with an enormous sense of financial shame. Today, financial educator Tiffany Aliche, better known as The Budgetnista, shares how she overcame financial shame. She talks to us about the opposite of shame, which is a sense of financial wholeness. And she discusses practical tips for how to navigate the challenges of debt and scams. Tiffany Aliche is the Award-Winning teacher of financial education and is America’s favorite personal financial educator who founded “The Budgetnista.” She is also a published author who has written the books The One Week Budget, the Live Richer Challenge series, the children’s book - Happy Birthday Mali More, and the New York Times Bestseller - Get Good with Money. Through “The Budgetnista,” Tiffany has created a financial movement that has helped over one million women around the world in completely transforming their financial mindset. With her company’s global “Live Richer Movement,” its participants, called the Dream Catchers, have collectively saved more than $250 million dollars and paid off over $200 million dollars worth of debt ever since its inception. Having laid the foundation for her company’s core mission based on her ten-year experience as a preschool teacher in Newark, NJ, Tiffany took her commitment to education into legislation when she partnered with Assemblywoman Angela V. McKnight in writing a bill that later became Law A1414 (The Budgetnista Law). This milestone legislation made it mandatory for financial education to be taught in all middle schools in the state of New Jersey. With the success of the legislation, Tiffany had created countless resources dedicated to her audiences around the world to teach financial courses face to face or through the online platform, Live Richer Academy, where thousands of students have enrolled for the main purpose of learning how to better manage their finances and transform their lives. Among the many channels, Tiffany has greatly utilized to spread more about better personal financial management are through her blog - The Budgetnista, and the top-rated, award-winning podcast - Brown Ambition. Her company and her advice were also featured on Good Morning America, the TODAY show, PBS, TIME, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, ESSENCE Magazine, FORBES, Fox Business, MSNBC, CNN/HLN. She is also the featured financial expert for the popular daytime talk show, The Real.Currently, Tiffany continues her pursuit for better financial education and is breaking barriers as the first (solo) Black woman to grace the cover of Money Magazine and as a NAACP Image Award Nominee for Outstanding Social Media Personality. Money isn't just about numbers. It's about emotions, too. Tiffany 'The Budgetnista' Aliche's new book unpacks the relationships we all have with finances so you can make the most of your cash.
This week we have one of our favorites, Tiffany 'The Budgetnista' Aliche, on to talk about her new book, "Getting Good With Money". This is Tiffany's third time on the podcast because she is that good! Tiffany was on just a year ago to talk about her children's book, "Happy Birthday Mali More". She is now working on the animated version of Mali and her Youtube channel for those stories. The subtitle to "Get Good With Money" is '10 Simple Steps To Becoming Financially Whole'. This book gets back to the basics of financial education. Financial education is so important to Tiffany she even helped create a law to get financial education to be a part of Middle Schools in New Jersey. Tiffany gives some easy tips on improving your credit score. Designate a credit card for one specific small bill every month and pay it off in full. She also explains how to piggy back onto someone else's credit too. For budgeting, Tiffany shares ways to budget without budgeting. You can set up direct deposits into four separate accounts. Two checking accounts - one for spending and one for bills. Two savings accounts - one for emergencies and one for goals. Split it before you get it. Tiffany wrote this book thinking of people who are differential learners. Being a teacher, she always thought of all the different ways and levels of knowledge that people reading this will have. Tiffany also shares all about the different people that might be a part of your financial team. Even if you don't need all the different team members, you should have an accountability partner. Whether it's a spouse or parent or close friend, you need someone who will support you and not shame you. In addition to questioning to whether or not you need a CPA or an Estate Planner, you also need to see if they will be a good fit. She gives tips and things to look for and ask yourself before hiring someone. Tiffany attributes her gift of teaching to the 10 years she spent teaching preschool. It was all about teaching those basics and she learned how to best navigate all of their different levels. It makes her very affective now with adults who are at all levels. We also talked about the gender wealth gap and the racial wealth gap. It's frustrated being underpaid doing the same things as other people doing the same things. Tiffany shares a little about her financial picture. She also tells us about an experience she went through in possibly taking money out of her home. It's commonly known that black homeowners get appraised at a lower rate. The appraisal Tiffany got back seemed low. She got another opinion. Someone from the New York Times did a story about it. After getting an independent appraiser to come and give another appraisal, they found that the first appraiser did some things that were definitely not accurate. Tiffany shares about how because of the bad appraisal and not taking that money and investing into it then it's lost money from lack of investing. Now Tiffany is helping to write a law to make it illegal to appraise someone's house based on their race. Also, the realtor and appraiser will make it clear and known where you can go if you feel like your house was appraised inaccurately. Hopefully, this law will soon be passed and even get federal attention. Other states have already started adopting laws similar to their financial literacy for children law. Even though Tiffany was unsure about being on the cover of her book, she's glad her publisher talked her into it. We are so glad too, she's a great example for all women. One of the reasons we love Tiffany is because of her empathy and kindness. She doesn't believe in bringing shame and blame to people over their financial situations. You can find her book, "Get Good With Money" at the website for the book - http://www.getgoodwithmoney.com And you can find her everywhere as "The Budgetnista" - http://www.thebudgetnista.com Find her on Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/thebudgetnista/ Be sure...

Listen in as the Tiffany Aliche, "The Budgetnista" confesses! We're talking business building, purpose seeking and passion-filled living in episode 32!
This interview is a from the archives, and my admiration for Tiffany Aliche grows. We have become friends and she recently hosted me in her Live Richer Academy, which is part of her seven-figure business that has grown to include more than 300,000 women. I am constantly inspired by Aliche's passion, business brilliance and true activism to change the world. +++ Man, I love Tiffany "The Budgetnista" Aliche. The financial educator was really really ticked off that the financial industry ignored people of color -- especially women. She looked around and saw countless brilliant, successful doctors, lawyers, architects and MBAs -- who were in debt and with little financial literacy or foundation. In this hilarious and inspiring interview, Aliche tells me how she set out to change that. Within a single year, Aliche recruited nearly 20,000 women of color into her Live Richer Challenge, a free program and community that helps members take control of their finances. To date, the challenge participants collectively paid off $400,000 in debt and saved $3.5 million. Best yet? Despite her proven power, financial services companies mostly still ignored her, so Aliche found a way to take financial services completely out of the equation while growing her following. She estimates 500,000 women of color will be part of her financial empowerment revolution within the next couple of years. Aliche and Yahoo! Finance correspondent Mandi Woodruff (upcoming Like a Mother guest!) also recently launched a podcast, on iTunes Brown Ambition, "a weekly podcast about career, business, building wealth and living in this brown skin." Have a listen as Aliche and I talk about her philosophy of making change in the world, and the ironing board that has changed tens of thousands of lives.

Our guest today, Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche, is quickly becoming America’s favorite personal financial educator. She is also a best-selling author and founder of the Live Richer Challenge. During the height of the recession in 2009 Tiffany lost her job when the school where she had worked as a preschool teacher for ten years was cut from the budget. For the next two years she stayed with relatives and collected unemployment while trying to figure out what to do next. She loved educating, and she loved personal finance. She eventually started matching those two passions together and doing it on a volunteer basis at first. In this episode Tiffany talks to us about: How she went from making $25,000 three years ago to running an almost million-dollar business today. How she didn’t conquer her fear but learned to listen to the other voice that said “do it anyway.” If you’re waiting for the fear to subside first, you’re going to be waiting forever. How she started a business by only putting money into it that would generate money back. She couldn’t afford a website so she had a free blog, she couldn’t afford business cards so she made photocopies. For media coverage she used a website called HARO. She would give simple quotes to reporters and in exchange she was able to use their logo on her website. Logo begets logo. When another reporter sees that it makes them more likely to want to talk to you. Live Richer Challenge. This is something free that they offer every year. It is a month’s worth of free step by step guidance. Sign up on the website and for one month get one easy financial task in your email that will lead you toward a better financial life. People have bought homes, collectively saved 20 million dollars in two years, paid off a million dollars of debt, raised credit scores and more. Tiffany is the best-selling author of The One Week Budget and The Live Richer Challenge. To build a strong following on social media you have to be a giver. Everyone is always saying buy my book, eat my food, or whatever. Nobody cares, everyone cares about themselves. If you’re talking about you no one cares but you (and maybe your mom). Instead it is your job to give. Tiffany just, for the first time in six years, asked her audience to pay for something. Tiffany said if there is anything she would go back and invest in it would be online training, like a blogging course. She also wishes she had invested in an assistant since she literally did everything herself. You’re going to mess up but you want to fail fast, succeed faster.
