Tiffany "The Budgetnista" Aliche says that she felt more whole BEFORE she had financial independence than she did after. We'll talk about building a solid financial footing and understanding on today's show. Tiffany has led women worldwide in paying off millions of dollars in debt, co-hosts the Brown Ambition podcast, and now has multiple financial education books published, including a pre-education book for children. Today we sit down with The Budgetnista for a wide-ranging interview including why you should strive for financial wholeness instead of financial freedom, how to present financial education so even children can grasp it, and her straightforward budgeting system. TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE:Shifts are not always sharp. Shifts come in all shapes and sizes. Some may be big and life-changing. Others may be softer with what seems a small impact, but it has a greater impact than one would think. All shifts you will make are going to align and take you to one destination. Making shifts take time and that’s okay! It’s never a lack of resources - it’s always a lack of resourcefulness. Most people in business think they are selling to the wrong people and that they need to go find people who have money. But that’s never always the right answer. Your story connects with people's hearts, not their money. Being able to understand the right avatar and share the same values as them.People are out there paying for things. There is a market out there to sell to. Stop using the excuse that no one will pay for your service because 99% of the time you are wrong and there is a group of people willing to pay for what you know. Fear is the number one thing that holds women back from making money. The idea that money is for men is an idea that our society has created and engraved into us at a young age. Also a lack of access to the resources in order to make the changes needed to make the big money. Knowledge, access, and community. What’s good everyone!! “Shoot your shot!” Not sure where that quote originates from, but to me it means take a chance even if means you’re going to get a hard “No” in response. I’ve been a huge fan of Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche’s work for several years. Several months ago, I reached out to her to see if she would come on to talk about personal finance and self-employment.  Tiffany said yes, and now we’re here! On the real, her episode is a masterclass on hitting rock bottom, finding your strengths, and then believing you can monetize it. More about Tiffany Aliche: Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche, is an award-winning teacher of financial education and is quickly becoming America’s favorite, personal financial educator. The Budgetnista is also an Amazon #1 bestselling author of The One Week Budget and the Live Richer Challenge series. Through her company, The Budgetnista, Tiffany has created a financial movement that has helped over 1 million women worldwide collectively save more than $150 million, and pay off over $100 million in debt, purchase homes and transform the way they think about their finances. These women that participate in this global movement call themselves, Dream Catchers. Tiffany credits her experience as a preschool teacher for 10 years in Newark, NJ for defining her purpose behind The Budgetnista…education. In 2019, Tiffany transformed her commitment into legislation when she partnered with Assemblywoman Angela V. McKnight to write a bill that was later signed into Law A1414 (The Budgetnista Law). This law made it mandatory for financial education to be integrated into all middle schools in New Jersey. To further her mission Tiffany has created and teaches numerous financial classes both online and in person. Her signature course is her annual, Live Richer Challenge with over 900,000 women participating in one or more of her Challenges. Paychecks & Balances – Tiffany Aliche The Budgetnistia– PB102 Today on the podcast Rich and Marcus interview Tiffany Aliche, “The Budgetnistia”. Tiffany is an award-winning teacher who specializes in financial literacy. She is the author of two #1 Amazon Best Sellers and has been featured in The New York Times, MSNBC, Fox, Time Magazine and many other major media outlets. In this episode you’ll hear Tiffany’s story and learn how she went from a perfect credit score with money in the bank, to losing a home and being over $30,000 in debt, to building a multi million dollar business and being one of the most popular financial literacy influencers of our time. Highlights: Tiffany grew up in a family that discussed money in an honest and open way. Her father was a CFO and an accountant. The first real world experience Tiffany had with money was when she wanted a bike for her 10th birthday. Her dad sat her down and showed her the families’ budget. Before you can teach your family about being financially literate, you have to learn yourself. You can’t teach or preach what you don’t know. Tiffany set up a piggybank on Amazon for her daughter whose nickname is “SuperGirl”. The money gets split up into savings/investing, giving/spending. SuperGirl understands that when she gets any money it must go into one of these categories. The best way to get a friend or family member to open up about financial talk is to talk about yourself first and let them know where you’ve been struggling with your budget. If there are no in person financial resources groups in your neighborhood or within your circle of influence, start with online groups. It can sometimes be easier to discuss your financial struggles in forums and chat groups. Your success is tied to the sum of the five people you hang out with most. Relationships are everything. There are some doors that cannot be opened from the outside. It doesn’t matter how smart you are or how hard you work. You can only get in by somebody opening the door. Tiffany breaks her friends into three groups: Peers, Mentors and Mentee’s. Before some of Tiffany’s major successes in business, she fell victim to an investment scam, overcame foreclosing on her house and had to pay off more than $30,000 in debt. Take responsibility for your poor financial decisions. One of the best ways to figure out your career path is to volunteer. You subconsciously act on your passions everyday and gravitate towards things you like to do. Become aware of this and parlay it into a career path. If you have an idea for a business that doesn’t already exist. Don’t start it. Instead find a niche within an already existing industry and master it. Pay it forward with your friends, family and employee’s. When you do well, bring other people up with you. The Takeaway: Take responsibility for your finances, build your network, and pay it forward. Tiffany Aliche grew up talking about money. Her dad was an accountant,  her mother actively  engaged the children in grocery  shopping and other areas of finance. She was a teacher at a private school and had just bought her first house. Then she met a “friend” who convinced her to invest in his get-rich-quick scheme. Promised future returns led to foolish spending. The economic downturn led to a lost job, and in turn a lost home. Bouncing between family members, Tiffany had a revelation: “I need to take responsibility for my past actions, and turn my life around.” Tiffany took the necessary steps to repair her finances, and then started teaching others how they could fix their finances, too. She’s turned her financial courses into a network of financial resources - including a 350,000+ member facebook group where you can ask and answer questions or get support during your journey. This show is for anyone who is sick of making bad financial choices, and wants to turn their life around.   This interview is a from the archives, and my admiration for Tiffany Aliche grows. We have become friends and she recently hosted me in her Live Richer Academy, which is part of her seven-figure business that has grown to include more than 300,000 women. I am constantly inspired by Aliche's passion, business brilliance and true activism to change the world.  +++ Man, I love Tiffany "The Budgetnista" Aliche. The financial educator was really really ticked off that the financial industry ignored people of color -- especially women. She looked around and saw countless brilliant, successful doctors, lawyers, architects and MBAs -- who were in debt and with little financial literacy or foundation. In this hilarious and inspiring interview, Aliche tells me how she set out to change that. Within a single year, Aliche recruited nearly 20,000 women of color into her Live Richer Challenge, a free program and community that helps members take control of their finances. To date, the challenge participants collectively paid off $400,000 in debt and saved $3.5 million. Best yet? Despite her proven power, financial services companies mostly still ignored her, so Aliche found a way to take financial services completely out of the equation while growing her following. She estimates 500,000 women of color will be part of her financial empowerment revolution within the next couple of years. Aliche and Yahoo! Finance correspondent Mandi Woodruff (upcoming Like a Mother guest!) also recently launched a podcast, on iTunes Brown Ambition, "a weekly podcast about career, business, building wealth and living in this brown skin." Have a listen as Aliche and I talk about her philosophy of making change in the world, and the ironing board that has changed tens of thousands of lives.

Hey Guys!   First podcast episode as the "Legal-EASE for Entrepreneurs podcast!  I have a new name and new website!   It all started at the Black Girl Vision Pitch Competition in April.  I decided to pitch my company for some seed money and did an awesome job! - you'll have to listen to find where I placed.   Having to come up with a 3-minute pitch really forced to think about my vision for my company and my brand.  I started this podcast just to vent about my own entrepreneur journey and to create a safe space for others who felt alone.  But it has turned into something much bigger and I had to rethink it all. I also talk about my recent trip to New York for the Great Girlfriends What Women Want Conference - which was amazing.  I got a chance to meet my [in-my-head]BFFs Christina Brown of LoveBrownSugar, Patrice Washington (the Money Maven) of PatriceWashington.com and Tiffany "The Budgetnista" Aliche and got a chance to catch up with Tieko Nejon!   I also talk about how hard it is to be consistent - especially when you have a full-time job and other responsibilities.  I get so hard on myself when I miss a week.     Let me know what you think of the new website and the new name.     Cheers!

Our guest today, Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche, is quickly becoming America’s favorite personal financial educator. She is also a best-selling author and founder of the Live Richer Challenge. During the height of the recession in 2009 Tiffany lost her job when the school where she had worked as a preschool teacher for ten years was cut from the budget. For the next two years she stayed with relatives and collected unemployment while trying to figure out what to do next. She loved educating, and she loved personal finance. She eventually started matching those two passions together and doing it on a volunteer basis at first. In this episode Tiffany talks to us about: How she went from making $25,000 three years ago to running an almost million-dollar business today. How she didn’t conquer her fear but learned to listen to the other voice that said “do it anyway.” If you’re waiting for the fear to subside first, you’re going to be waiting forever. How she started a business by only putting money into it that would generate money back. She couldn’t afford a website so she had a free blog, she couldn’t afford business cards so she made photocopies. For media coverage she used a website called HARO. She would give simple quotes to reporters and in exchange she was able to use their logo on her website. Logo begets logo. When another reporter sees that it makes them more likely to want to talk to you. Live Richer Challenge. This is something free that they offer every year. It is a month’s worth of free step by step guidance. Sign up on the website and for one month get one easy financial task in your email that will lead you toward a better financial life. People have bought homes, collectively saved 20 million dollars in two years, paid off a million dollars of debt, raised credit scores and more. Tiffany is the best-selling author of The One Week Budget and The Live Richer Challenge. To build a strong following on social media you have to be a giver. Everyone is always saying buy my book, eat my food, or whatever. Nobody cares, everyone cares about themselves. If you’re talking about you no one cares but you (and maybe your mom). Instead it is your job to give. Tiffany just, for the first time in six years, asked her audience to pay for something. Tiffany said if there is anything she would go back and invest in it would be online training, like a blogging course. She also wishes she had invested in an assistant since she literally did everything herself. You’re going to mess up but you want to fail fast, succeed faster. In 2009, Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche lost her job as a preschool teacher. Unable to afford her mortgage, she moved back home with her parents at age 29. At her lowest moment, she was 31 years old, with no job, no money, and no home of her own. After hitting rock bottom, she determined it was time to put the financial wisdom she had learned growing up to good use. In this week’s episode, she shares how she bounced back from financial despair to take charge of her own life and help others do the same. Along the way, she has built a hugely profitable brand and even more, an insanely loyal community of Dream Catchers devoted to her Live Richer principles. Author of two #1 Amazon bestsellers, The One Week Budget and Live Richer Challenge, Tiffany The Budgetnista and her financial advice have also been featured in The New York Times, Reuters, US News and World Report, the TODAY show, PBS, Fox Business, MSNBC, CBS MoneyWatch, TIME, ESSENCE Magazine, and FORBES. Many of my guests on the show have told me how important it is to start talking with kids about money… early and often. And one of my recent guests, Ron Lieber, the author of “The Opposite of Spoiled” has taken it a step further. He suggests that we help children learn how to associate money with a work activity…. that is ideally above and beyond their regular household chores. (i.e. don’t give them that allowance for free… have them earn it!). Today’s guest is a great case-in-point. She grew up in a family where money was a frequent topic on the family agenda and every moment was used as an opportunity to help kids acquire good money habits. Tiffany Aliche is the rising star in the personal finance world and the founder and CEO of TheBudgetnista.com It’s a financial education firm, which provides seminars, workshops and, more importantly, financial empowerment to thousands of women across the globe. Tiffany is the bestselling author of the book, The One Week Budget, and has been featured on NBC, PBS, The New York Times, and ESSENCE Magazine, among others. Her outstanding client list includes such leading institutions as American Express, Princeton University, The New York Public Library and The United Way. Three takeaways from our interview: -- How growing up in the family where money was the norm helped her build stellar financial skills, including a credit score of 802 by the age of 26! -- How venturing into the investing world led to $25,000 of unexpected credit card debt. -- Tiffany’s strategy for setting and achieving goals (Hint: write them down!)
