Catherine Airey's debut novel Confessions features on the “Books to Look Forward to in 2025” lists for the Financial Times and The Sunday Times. Catherine has been praised by The Guardian, The Atlantic, The Independent, Publishers Weekly and The Irish Times. The Guardian named her as one of 2025's Best New Novelists. The Radio Times says she's “bound to become a household name very soon.” Authors who love her work include Yael van der Wouden, author of The Safekeeping which was nominated for the Booker last year. She's been interviewed for The Times Radio, The Bookseller, Country and Town House, and Radio 4's prestigious Woman's Hour. She was also recently in conversation with 2024 star Ferdia Lennon, author of Glorious Exploits, for Waterstones in Deansgate. We talk about her journey to writing Confessions, favourite reads and the complexity of family stories. Get Confessions here or at your local bookshop! Find Catherine on Instagram @catherineairey. CONFESSIONS:It is late September in 2001 and the walls of New York are papered over with photos of the missing. Cora Brady's father is there, the poster she made taped to columns and bridges. Her mother died long ago and now, orphaned on the cusp of adulthood, Cora is adrift and alone. Soon, a letter will arrive with the offer of a new life: far out on the ragged edge of Ireland, in the town where her parents were young, an estranged aunt can provide a home and fulfil a long-forgotten promise. There the story of Cora's family is hidden, and in her presence will begin to unspool…An essential, immersive debut from an astonishing new voice, Confessions traces the arc of three generations of women as they experience in their own time the irresistible gravity of the past: its love and tragedy, its mystery and redemption, and, in all things intended and accidental, the beauty and terrible shade of the things we do.

In this converation with memoirist Abigail Thomas, we discuss the backstory of writing Safekeeping, and that now-classic memoir was initially turned down by all the editors the book was sent, except for one. We talk about how crafting a memoir-in-fragments like Safekeeping allows a writer to depict memories in a way a more conventional structure doesn't permit. She talks about why writing what you don't remember is as important as what you do; and the value of following what interests and obsesses you, even if it doesn't seem to go anywhere at first.Thomas's is one of the great voices in memoir—shrewd, warm, devoid of self-pity—and like all wise teachers, she imparts insights about a life well spent, even when talking about a book well-crafted.This conversation was recorded in 2022 and just updated.Abigail Thomas is the author of several memoirs, including Safekeeping, A Three Dog Life, What Comes Next and How to Like it, and most recently Still Life at Eighty, as well as three works of fiction: Getting Over Tom, An Actual Life, and Herb's Pajamas. Some of my biggest takeaways“Chronological order makes little sense to me…”Most of Thomas's memoirs eschew the conventional chronological approach, opting instead for fragmented structures that mirror the way memory works. Abigail Thomas believes that "life has been lived like a series of moments," and memoirs are stronger when they reflect that."Well, I will confess that I have a poor memory, except for the things I remember. So putting them in chronological order makes very little sense to me. It's why this now? Why am I thinking of this now? Why this memory? Write it down. You'll find out why. The trick is not to boss them around, you know. Just let them come, and they will."This memoir-in-fragments approach unexpectedly draws the reader inSafekeeping, for example, is comprised of dozens of short sections—some four or five pages, others as brief as a single sentence. Then there's the narrator herself, frequently switching between past and present tense, or between first- and third-person.With all that lack of connective tissue, all that shifting of tenses and point-of-view, you'd expect the narrative flow to be constantly disrupted. Instead this approach creates a genuine connection with readers, in part because it invites them to piece together the narrative puzzleThe key to writing a great memoir-in-fragments is to have a strong, unified voiceMarried for the first time at 18, remarried at 27—Abigail Thomas's life was full of wrong turns. She had a lot of living under her belt. Yet the narrator here keeps things light and crisp, avoiding self-judgment. Instead, here the persona is vulnerable, startlingly honest, unsentimental, wry, and above all, entertaining. In The Situation and the Story, Vivian Gornick writes that great memoirs feature a “truth-telling” narrator. We trust the voices of George Orwell, Annie Dillard, or James Baldwin because they seem so honest and self-aware. Thomas's narrator is one of these."The more vulnerable you make yourself, the stronger you become”Thomas urges writers to be honest and vulnerable, since revealing truths about oneself tends to have a liberating effect. This openness serves as a conduit through which readers can see their truths reflected in the author's life, reinforcing the fact we all tend to feel similar things inside. The key is to write without an agenda—to connect with an emotion and let go of outcomes.“You need to write about the stuff you don't wanna write about…[but] you have to find a side door, and it isn't therapy. Writing isn't therapy. But if you're truthful, and honest, and write what you need to write, it has the effect of you've made something out of it separate from yourself, you've revealed things to yourself about yourself, and it's a way of forgiving yourself, you know, and others.”“The past is every bit as unpredictable as the future”The unpredictable nature of memory can be troubling for both writer and reader. Yet, Thomas says that this unpredictability is where the real magic of memoir writing lies. The unpredictable becomes an asset, turning writing into a journey of self-discovery and an act of creative courage.“I don't believe in chronology. And the older you get, the more you don't believe in chronology or even time. What is it? I mean, I'm at the age now where I live entirely in the moment. Sometimes the moment is a good one, sometimes it's a more interesting one, but that's where I am. I never think about the future. I do have memories, and I write about them because I wrote somewhere, ‘You discover that the past is every bit as unpredictable as the future.' And for me, the future is behind me. You know, I don't have... I just have now.”What you don't remember can be as powerful as what you doMany writers (me included) tend to get hung up by the fact they don't remember enough when it comes to memoir. But embracing the fallability of memory is exactly the point of memoir, says Thomas. It's what makes a narrator more authentic—and believable:“I really do think that what you don't remember belongs in there, because in the course of writing this, you may begin to remember, or you may begin to remember why you don't remember. But it is interesting for the reader to know that the writer is at least honest enough to say, ‘I don't remember why I did this. I don't remember what came before,' because it's so human.”Discussed on this episode*  “Getting Started” - reflections on how Abby started writing Safekeeping* Safekeeping: Some True Stories from a Life Bookshop.org | Amazon* What Comes Next and How to Like it Bookshop.org | Amazon* Still Life at Eighty: The Next Interesting Thing Bookshop.org | The Golden Notebook | Amazon* Read my essay “How to create narrative tension in a memoir-in-fragments”CreditsThis episode was produced by Magpie Audio Productions. I know you are going to learn a great deal as well. I want to mention that I am doing two podcast merchandise fundraisers for the Animal Safekeeping Program. The first are dog and cat bandanas that are yellow and have a black YXE Underground logo on them. They cost 10 dollars and your pet will look so good wearing them! The second fundraiser is a new round of YXE Underground t-shirts! The shirts are 3/4 length baseball tees that are blue and white with a blue YXE Underground logo. They sell for 25 dollars. All of the money from the sale of bandanas and shirt will go to the Animal Safekeeping Program. Jill Sarkozi, founder of the Safekeeping Stories program, talks about the mission and system of the work. Inspired by helping her father-in-law, a Holocaust survivor, write his story, Jill went on to develop the Storykeeping® method. Since founding the program in 2012, Jill and her team have helped many families capture their own family stories. The workshop provides a safe environment for these family members to explore the family's Holocaust story, understand how it has been part of their own story, and then add their generational layer to the family story as they write observations about life with their survivor-family member. Using a structured system of one-two page ‘slices', children and grandchildren of survivors build up a 15-20 page history which they can use in many ways – in a slide show, as impetus for a heritage trip, and more. Helping people recover their family story and watch the reactions has often been a beautiful and moving experience.  Highlights:·       Workshops are intimate groups of ten people, with a lot of personal attention and guidance. ·       The focus has mainly been Holocaust stories preserved by children, grandchildren and other next generation family members of survivors, and will remain so for the next 3-5 years. ·       Besides workshops, Safekeeping Stories offers speakers, one-day programs, and a method families can use independently.·       Lesson learned, one: People retain the family story from the child perspective and watching the shift to the adult view is surprising.·       Lesson learned, two: A person's response to incredible loss, and the impact on subsequent generations positively and negatively, takes many forms.·       Lesson learned, three: A small kindness can place a tenderness in someone's heart. Paul talks with the NYT-bestselling memoirist and teacher, Abigail Thomas. Her memoir, Safekeeping (2000), is a marvel of technical innovation, enviable humor, and just plain old heart. She's clear-sighted about her own failings, as well as other people's, but she never seems to judge anyone. In this episode Abigail Thomas shares the backstory of how she came to write Safekeeping, how the memoir was initially turned down by all the editors the book was sent, except for one.  The interview is something of a masterclass on writing memoir as Thomas also talks about: How to shape an experimental or “mosaic” memoir like hers How to own what you don't remember Her favorite writing exercise (hint: it's 2 pages about…) How to stop getting hung up by chronology in memoir Writing memoir vs. "tattling" How to create distance in memoir Abigail Thomas, the daughter of renowned science writer Lewis Thomas, is the author of three works of fiction: Getting Over Tom, An Actual Life, and Herb's Pajamas. On June 1st, 2008, a fire broke out on the backlot of Universal Studios in Hollywood, CA, destroying nearly 175,000 audio master tapes belonging to some of the most well-known artists worldwide, including Peter Frampton, Beck, Sheryl Crow, Elton John, Les Paul, and thousands of others lost forever.  John Kohl, the CEO, and co-founder of TuneGO, is our guest on this episode to discuss the music industry's biggest challenge: the digitization and secure storage of creative content, preventing such things from happening in the future. TuneGO is pretty much like having a record label in a box. The company offers the first digital end-to-end platform empowering artists to manage their music careers by developing a secure and unified digital ecosystem where independent artists can take control over the management, storage, promotion, and distribution of their music—as well as intellectual property rights. In this episode, we also discuss: The music industry used to be controlled by a handful of powerful gatekeepers, but digital technology upended all of that. Gone are the days where a handful of record labels control which artists are on the radio and are sold in stores. The doors have been open to millions of independent music creators. Even though digitization has transformed the production and distribution of music, artists' back catalogs remain antiquated—and in many cases, are not correctly stored or archived. This leaves artists' intellectual property dangerously vulnerable to destruction—look at the 2008 Universal Studios fire.  Music from independent artists accounts for $6.9 billion in revenue or 39.9% of the recorded music industry's market share (according to Worldwide Independent Network and MIDiA Research). Theft of content and the intellectual property rights to it remain key challenges. About TuneGO TuneGO serves as a secure, fully integrated digital ecosystem where independent artists control the management, storage, promotion, and distribution of their music –and intellectual property rights to their music. The TuneGO Vault is a patented cloud-based platform for securely storing and sharing music in digital form, including audio files and the project and stem files (bass, drums, vocals, and melody of a track) from recording sessions. The TuneGO Vault is not only for individual artists but for record labels as well. Hidden Beach Recordings recently tapped the Vault as a way to digitally secure its entire back catalog of music, videos, and exclusive digital artwork—as well as all future assets. Their patented technology allows artists to securely manage their digital content and metadata on the same platform they distribute their music—ensuring they are paid all of their royalties. TuneGO is a first-of-its-kind solution that gives artists and labels complete control over the entire creative process, providing the ability to establish a chain of custody for a song before the minting of a non-fungible token (NFT). www.tunego.com The Business Side of Music ™ Lotta Dogs Productions LLC   Co-Produced and Hosted (by the guy who has a face for podcasting):  Bob Bender Co-Producer, Creator, and Technical Advisor (the man behind the curtain):  Tom Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Audio/Video Editor Mark Sabella Midnight Express Studio  Olian, NY Marketing and Social Media: Kaitlin Fritts Executive Assistant to Bob and Tom (the one who keeps us on track and our schedules straight) Tammy Kowalski All Around Problem Solver: Connie Ribas Recorded at: The Bunker in Franklin, TN (except during the Covid 19 pandemic, then it's pretty much done VIA Skype or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's living room… and there are a few). Multi-Hazards podcast is on Season 4 and it hasn't even been a year yet! Multi-Hazards is in full-swing, looking at the theme of "protecting communities" from a variety of angles! Join host Vin Nelsen as he reviews Season 3's twenty episodes from Sept 2020 to April 2021, and looks forward to an entirely new season.  Vin Nelsen's Bio Vin Nelsen has a passion for protecting communities. While continuing to teach immigrants at Douglas College near Vancouver, British Columbia (BC), Canada, he studied a Grad Diploma in Climate Risk Management from the University of Waterloo, a Certificate in Climate Change Policy & Practice from the University of Toronto, courses from Yukon University's Graduate Diploma in Climate Change Policy, as well as a Diploma of Emergency & Security Management, Certificate in Emergency Management and Certificate of Emergency Management Exercise Design from Justice Institute of BC (JIBC), plus courses in First Nations' Studies, meteorology, technical writing and cyber security while volunteering with a local Emergency Preparedness program and Red Cross these last two + years. He finished in December 2019, then COVID-19's disruption came in March 2020, so this podcast at least lets him release some of that pent-up steam while seeking ways to contribute to the fields of Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).  He has a Master of Arts in Cross-Cultural-related studies (Trinity), a Bachelor of Arts, double majors of Communication (Media) and French as well as a Certificate of Liberal Arts (Simon Fraser University), a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (Vancouver Community College), and passed the Real Estate Trading Services Licensing from the University of British Columbia (UBC).  His previous work including many years in immigrant helping organisations as program manager, career and job search counsellor and instructor, English language instructor and real estate agent.  He worked six years in Asia and has worked especially with non-Westerners since his youth.  For the next few decades, he will dedicate himself to protecting communities from extreme weather events, geohazards, security threats and damaging social and political trends. «Être fort pour être utile.» ("Be strong to be useful") ~ From Georges Hébert (1875-1957), French Navy officer, pioneer of France's physical education programs and creator of the Natural Method.

Happy Furry Friday! Happy Furry Friday! It’s a furbulous day here in Dallas, Texas! At the half we have a wonderful guest, Stacy Sutton Kerby from The Texas Humane Legislation Network talking about abolishing puppy mills! But first up, we have Maura Davies of The SPCA Texas, so let's get started! Maura Davies Maura Davies is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications at the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) of Texas. As a longtime friend of One Life Radio, Maura is with us almost every Friday! How Pets Support Our Mental Health Bernadette says that having a pet in the family home can teach kids empathy, responsibly, and more! Children with ADHD can benefit from working with and keeping a pet. Taking charge of the jobs on a pet care schedule, such as feeding, walking and bathing, helps a child learn to plan and be responsible. Walking a dog often leads to conversations with other dog owners and this helps owners to stay socially connected and less withdrawn. People who have more social relationships and friendships tend to be mentally healthier. Having a pet in the house increases the positive energy! It’s also no surprise that 98% of pet owners consider their pet to be a member of the family. Not only are people happier in the presence of animals, they’re also healthier. In a survey of pet owners, 74% of pet owners reported mental health improvements from pet ownership, and 75% of pet owners reported a friend’s or family member’s mental health has improved from pet ownership. The simple act of petting a cat or a dog can reduce stress related hormones and lower your heart rate! If you have anxiety and suffer from panic attacks, you can begin to pet your animal to help aid in preventing a big anxiety attack. Stacy Sutton Kerby Stacy’s tenure with Texas Humane Legislation Network, or THLN, began in 2012 with fundraising and grassroots organizing. Since then, Stacy has worn several hats for THLN, including Volunteer Coordinator, Director of Operations, and Legislative Liaison. Stacy served as THLN’s Interim Executive Director in 2015 when they successfully passed HB 593 – the Mandatory Canine Encounter Training Law. In 2019, Stacy launched Safekeeping – a program supporting the pets of people exiting crises. She received her Master’s in Public Affairs from the LBJ School in August 2019, and returned to THLN in 2020 as the Director of Government relations. Stacy volunteers in her local community with the Austin Humane Society and PALS – a program supporting the pets of Meals On Wheels clients Texas Human Legislation Network Fight To Abolish Puppy Mills In Texas The Texas legislature is preparing to gut the state program that prevents unregulated puppy mills. Since 2011, the Texas Dog & Cat Breeder Act has given the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) the right to regulate the conditions in large-scale animal breeding facilities. Without this Act, unregulated, large scale breeding facilities could likely become inhumane puppy mills producing dogs for profit in the cruelest conditions. We must remind Texas legislators of the importance of this Program. Elimination of the Program means zero regulations for those profiting off puppies. The absence of even the most basic minimum care standards will lead to horrific puppy mills. This will be causing thousands of dogs and cats will suffer a lifetime of neglect. THLN’s goals are to protect this incredibly important Program and then fix the existing loopholes to strengthen it. NOW is the time for action. Please help us change the fate of thousands of animals in commercial breeding facilities by signing and sharing our Petition today. When you sign our Petition,

Fidelity has been granted a trust licence to offer trading and custody of bitcoin by the New York State Department of Financial Services, as the asset management group continues to woo cautious institutional investors into the “Wild West” of digital assets. The move allows Fidelity’s new digital assets subsidiary to launch a digital currency custody and execution platform “on which institutional investors and individuals can securely store, purchase, sell, and transfer bitcoin” to New York residents, the DFS said. Boston-based Fidelity, which has about $2.8tn of assets under management, made clear last year it intended to take the plunge to offer digital assets services to Wall Street, where other regulated groups have held back from the nascent marketplace. “The custody and trade execution services that we provide are essential building blocks for institutional investors’ continued adoption of digital assets,” Michael O’Reilly, chief operating officer for Fidelity Digital Assets, said on Tuesday. “The designation as a New York trust company under the supervision and examination of the DFS builds on the credibility and trust we’re establishing among institutions and other market participants,” he said, adding that the group wanted to continue to play a “leading role” in “supporting the maturation of the entire ecosystem”. Last month, Abigail Johnson, the investment group’s chief executive, told the Financial Times that what had started as a “just for fun” experiment had become a serious drive to build up a viable crypto custody business for hedge funds, family offices and financial adviser clients. Safekeeping of crypto assets has been a concern for institutional investors because exchanges have been plagued by outages and hacks. Prolific market manipulation and scams in the loosely regulated space have been a deterrent. Nevertheless, yield-hungry speculators have continued to flock to volatile crypto markets, while some are optimistic that Facebook’s plan to spearhead the launch of its own digital currency, Libra, will further legitimise the space. The price of bitcoin has risen this year from less than $4,000 at the beginning of the year to more than $8,000 today. To date, New York has issued 23 of the highly coveted licences to companies involved in virtual currency activities in the state. Earlier this year, the department granted a licence to the Intercontinental Exchange, the world’s second-largest exchange group by market value, to provide custody of bitcoin futures via Bakkt, its digital assets arm. The move signals New York’s keenness to promote itself as a hub for crypto activity, alongside countries such as Switzerland and Malta. “This approval is further evidence that innovation and consumer protection can coexist in New York’s evolving and expanding financial services industry,” said Linda Lacewell, the DFS’s superintendent of financial services.

Conscious Discipline is both trauma-based and trauma-informed. It emphasizes optimal brain development for all children and adults, regardless of life experiences like chronic stress and trauma. There are three types of trauma: acute, chronic and complex. Acute trauma results from a singular instance, like a natural disaster. Alabama Pre-K teachers April Carr and Hillary Spratlin were faced with restoring safety after acute trauma when a major tornado struck the small community of Beauregard. Both teachers leaned on the powers and skills they had learned from Conscious Discipline to be of service, help children identify and regulate their emotions, and focus on empathy and helpfulness. In this podcast, April and Hillary share the steps they took to help young students and their families heal after a natural disaster. Read more about April’s experience with Conscious Discipline and restoring safety after a tornado in her article “My Conscious Discipline Journey: Taming Anxiety and Healing After a Natural Disaster” (https://consciousdiscipline.com/my-conscious-discipline-journey-taming-anxiety-and-healing-after-a-natural-disaster/). In the “Important Links” section below, access free resources mentioned in the podcast, including a social story and ritual plans for Safekeeping and Wish Well. Essential Takeaways • The goals of Conscious Discipline include helping children experience a felt sense of safety and authentic connection, teaching and modeling the executive skills needed to achieve goals despite obstacles and distractions, and empowering everyone to give and receive empathy. • Acute trauma results from a singular instance. Chronic trauma is repeated and prolonged, and complex trauma is exposure to varied and multiple traumatic events. • In times of stress or turmoil, being of service to others can help balance and regulate our internal state. • After experiencing a major tornado, April and Hillary utilized strategies like home visits, Feeling Buddies, heart cream, Wish Well, an expanded Safekeeper Ritual, and a focus on helpfulness and safety. Noah Rahimzadeh and Matt Prasek were partners in the Entrepreneurial Management program at Ball State University and co-founders of Safekeeping. Safekeeping helps families monitor the health and wellness of their loved ones in medical facilities including, but not limited to, long-term care (LTC), assisted living, memory care, hospice, and home health. By integrating with electronic medical records (EMRs), Safekeeping securely delivers patient data to designated family members' computers and mobile devices, bridging the gap in communication between medical facilities and patient's families. Because Safekeeping pulls existing EMR data, it doesn't create any additional work for LTC staff and family members can be sure they are receiving accurate information about their loved ones. Safekeeping creates a better long-term care experience for families, their elderly loved ones, and your staff.
