Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Today, we meet an AT thru-hiker from the Class of 2015 who went on to buy and run a hostel near the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Erin Tuveson, or Bookie, became so enamored of the trail that she wanted to be around the community she met out there. Erin now owns and runs the Rambling Roots Hostel, bringing her AT knowledge to bear as she puts together the kind of place she loved when she was hiking. You can learn more about Erin and her hostel at her website Rambling Roots Hostel. Additionally, you can keep up with Erin and the hostel on social media at: Rambling Roots Hostel andRambling Roots Hostel (@ramblingrootshostel) • Instagram profile. Also, Erin's blog about traveling with her dog is at How My Dog Survived a Thru-Hike With Me: Keeping Them Healthy - The Trek . In my accountability blog, I've started to acquire some of the smaller items I'll need for my hike, and I also lost Luis, my personal trainer this week. We keep moving forward though, as Jake has taken up the task of getting me in some sort of shape for the trail. I used my hike in 2024 on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. The Munsons gather to sarcastically temper our excitement as we dive into the career of the impossibly handsome Jay Hernandez—a task made nearly impossible as we spend most of the episode reconciling with just how damn good-looking he is and why Hollywood repeatedly cast him as “the hot guy.” Given his history in sports films, we're genuinely shocked he's never shown up in a basketball movie, though we admit it's tough for anyone to stand out in a sports ensemble. We dig into his remarkably average box office snapshot and wonder whether his Munson Meter score will land just as squarely in the middle. His filmography spans a surprisingly wide range of projects, but does he have the acting range to match? We debate his ability to play menacing (we're not convinced) and note his clear love for playing Marines. We revisit our first watches of Hostel to see if it holds up two decades later, and after covering Quarantine, we dive into the larger philosophy of found-footage films and how the format can be done well. We also question his decision to join Suicide Squad, why his character turned out so flat, and the logic behind teaming up with David Ayer again afterward. Finally, we look ahead at what's next for Hernandez post-Magnum P.I.—will he get locked into steady TV roles, or is a future full of producing credits waiting for him? How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.

Matt Dillon is Jack in The House that Jack Built (2018), a seriously mean movie. Great Horror movies can often be a bummer. Vicious, unrelenting, and cruel films that deny us the happy ending and the victorious fist pump. Many horror fans, and a couple of the podcasters for The Scariest Things in particular, seek these films out. We are crossing bridges too far. No punch pulling. Beware and behold Episode 205: Mean Horror. The caveats associated with the “recommendations” presented in this episode have caveats of their own. These are the films that may make you regret your movie selection decisions. Grim. Brutal. Emotionally taxing. These movies have merit, but these aren’t movies meant to be enjoyed. Quite the opposite, actually. These movies strip your soul and make you ponder the darkness in society. Often, these movies are human-on-human horror, delivering cruelty that only we can inflict on ourselves. Just know we will be following up soon with the salve for the emotional wounds that come with our “Feel Good” episode to help you recover. Here are the criteria we used in picking our movies. The movie does not require compliance with all the listed criteria, but if the movie contains many of these themes, then it would qualify for our selections. Bad things happen to innocent people. Repeatedly. The protagonists often don’t survive the movie. Evil wins. The ending is a bummer. There is little humor in the movie. Typically, people would not describe this movie as “fun.” The movie may be pervasively depressing and nihilistic. There is little hope in the movie. The movie has an emotional impact. Note that this is not a reflection of the quality of the movies. Many of them are very good and critically appreciated. They also don’t need to be gory to be mean, though they often are. The Podcast: Episode 205: Mean Horror With those caveats and warnings: brace yourselves. It’s time for MEAN HORROR. For similar content, check our Bridge Too Far Infographics. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Oliver Winter, CEO and Founder of a&o Hostels, for an inspiring conversation about his entrepreneurial journey, from traveling on a shoestring budget to building one of the largest hostel brands in the world. We talk about his focus on being a cost leader, not a price leader, and how that translates to a guest experience that works for small pockets while still serving the needs of his guests. Oliver also shares his passion for sustainability and how his company has been able to move from an 18-kilogram per guest carbon footprint to just a 3.8-kilogram per guest carbon footprint. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How Oliver turned his personal travel experiences into founding one of the largest hostel brands in Europe Why being a cost leader (rather than just a price leader) shapes a&o Hostels' unique value proposition and guest experience What makes the hostel guest experience distinctive, especially in terms of shared spaces, social atmosphere, and accommodation variety How a&o Hostels attracts diverse customer segments―from student groups to families, digital nomads, and backpackers―and the distribution strategies that work for them Why sustainability became a central focus for a&o Hostels, and how they've reduced their carbon footprint by over 80% per guest overnight What's next for a&o Hostels, including the big announcement of a new luxury budget brand to extend their reach and serve evolving traveler needs Creating Value Without Compromise One of the cornerstone philosophies for a&o Hostels is being a "cost leader," not just a "price leader." This means that they streamline operations and get rid of unnecessary frills while keeping the essentials, like comfort and safety, readily accessible. The hostels boast large capacities (an average of 800 beds per location), centralized operations, and shared facilities, striking a balance between affordability and a vibrant, social guest experience. Rather than confining the traveler's experience to private rooms, a&o focuses on engaging common areas, such as 24/7 bars, kids' zones, and flexible working spaces. These communal amenities give great opportunities for people to connect, appealing to families, digital nomads, student groups, and backpackers. The model values shared spaces over luxury and, in doing so, builds community. Evolving Guest Profiles and Modern Distribution Channels a&o Hostels caters to a wide range of guests, with profiles shifting based on season and day of the week. Midweek guests are often student groups and school tours, while weekends and holidays attract families and independent travelers. The brand is found on major OTAs like Booking.com and Expedia, but has also cultivated a strong direct booking channel via their own website. The flexibility in room types, from single or twin rooms for teachers and families to dorm-style accommodations for groups, further enhances their accessibility. This adaptable approach enables a&o to welcome anyone from school-aged travelers to budget-conscious business guests. Sustainability as a Core Company Value Beginning in 2015, Oliver and his team took a pioneering approach by closely tracking and reducing their carbon footprint per guest. Initially, a&o's footprint was already lower than average (18kg CO₂e per overnight stay, compared to 25kg at home), primarily thanks to shared spaces and efficient building use. But instead of settling, a&o set their sights higher. Through targeted operational changes—reducing waste, switching to renewable energy contracts, limiting disposables, and leveraging automation—they slashed their footprint by 80% to just 3.8kg per guest. What's more, many sustainability initiatives actually resulted in cost savings, debunking the myth that going green is always expensive. Und für alle, die tanzen wollen – auch auf der Straße. Was dann passiert, ist fast zu groß, um es zu begreifen. Ein Song wird zur Welthymne – und der Sound einer Nacht zum Soundtrack für Milliarden.

David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) stars Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle, a brilliant scientist who creates a teleportation process using telepods. Geena Davis, who was Goldblum's real-life partner during the filming, plays the ambitious journalist Veronica who falls in love with Brundle. Coming in at approximately an hour and 36 minutes, Cronenberg's remake of the 1958 movie (which was based on a 1957 short story) packs a lot in, getting right to the mad scientist's lab then plenty of body horror, experiments with flesh, and a bizarre transformation. Brundle, who teleports himself during a drunken pity party, did so with a fly on board. Since the computer doesn't know what to do with these two separate entities, it fuses them, resulting in Brundlefly, and utter tragedy. Daisy Koenig, a graduate of Winthrop University's design program, talks about what makes Cronenberg's The Fly so memorable and why unhappy endings are the best kind.-Daisy Koenig, a graduate of Winthrop University's design program, is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer based in Charleston, SC. “I had to watch it 3 or 4 times to finally get there…” Ahhh, the 80's. A time when people could actually afford to live, back when Taco Bell was both super cheap and equally delicious, horror movies were genuinely scary and often boasted incredibly “special” special effects, and terrified parents everywhere were completely “freaking the motherfrickin' frick out” over heavy metal and the ensuing “Satanic Panic” that followed. (Remember, we're talking about the 80's here…) “I kinda feel like Satan probably listens to Air Supply nonstop…or Gino Vanelli…” Not to worry though, because Tipper Gore was on the case, going out of her way to ensure that the future prosperity of heavy metal would be secure forever with the PMRC seal of approval (PARENTAL ADVISORY – EXPLICIT CONTENT) plastered on the cover of everything that would be deemed essential listening. Thanks to the diligent efforts and painstaking research of Tipper Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center, the PMRC lovingly crafted “The Filthy Fifteen” for American parents to ensure that their children would only be exposed to the finest audio artistry the heavy metal genre (and somehow, also Satan) had to offer. One of the bands included on that fateful list were the founders of black metal, VENOM (ironically, rated “O” … for “Obviously” …as in “Obviously, your kids should be listening to this!”). Hailing from probably the fanciest, most upper crust sounding city in all of England, Newcastle upon Tyne's 3-piece of evil VENOM came blasting out of the gates of hell with what would become the foundation for the black metal genre that would begin its ascent into heavy metal culture around the same time as thrash metal in the early 80's, with a sound combining the rawness of Motorhead, the darkness of Sabbath, and the speed of thrash with an imagery reminiscent of KISS if they were actually satanists. If Black Sabbath are ground zero for the formation of heavy metal as we know it, then VENOM is no doubt the Black Sabbath of the black metal genre. With a dark, detached creepiness that sounds like something recorded in an underground mausoleum, VENOM are the originators of extreme metal and were out in front, scaring the hell out of parents everywhere and delighting young and impressionable metalheads the world over. Happy Halloween everyone!!! It's time to celebrate spooky season the way we did back in the 80's, by going through your kids trick-or-treat plunder and picking out all of that “good candy”. "Great was the darkness of that night and its horror, and demons would appear on that night always."Oíche shamhna shona daoibh go léir! Happy Hallowe'en! To accompany you on any trick or treating or early morning/late night wakenings this weekend we bring you our spooky Samhain special! Dr Hannah Mac Auliffe, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Maynooth University, explains how the festival of Samhain appears in medieval Irish literature as a time for feasting and merriment, with the High King's Feast of Tara taking place on Halloween in several medieval stories. And just as we gather together and tell stories of demons and ghouls each October 31st, so too did the people of medieval Ireland. We hear of everything from zombies, threefold deaths and beheadings to werewolves, witches and kidnappings by the fairy armies of the sídhe. Both of Dan's stories come from Thailand. Thailand has a LOT of supernatural stories! We begin in Bangkok where we explore an abandoned and supposedly haunted skyscraper. Then, we'll head to one of Thailand's biggest college campuses, Chiang Mai University, to examine a few of the resident spirits there. And learn a bit about the relationship between Thai culture and the spirit world along the way. Then, Lynze has three very different stories this week. We begin in a hospital with a patient who raises hell in life... and maybe in death. Then, we head to Nevada to hear one persons harrowing tale of being chased in the dark. We wrap up this week in Sweden where a young man hopes to get lucky with a new love interest but goes home with something far more interesting! Hostel, House and Chambers: Accommodating the Victorian and Edwardian Working Woman (Liverpool University Press, 2025) by Emily Gee is the first comprehensive study of the campaigns to house a new generation of working women, the specialised design of the buildings and the women whose lives were changed by this architectural movement. After 1900, the rapid rise of women working as clerks, secretaries or typists, in London and other cities, created an urgent need for affordable and respectable accommodation. Building on models of elegant Victorian ladies' residential chambers and the vast working men's lodging houses, a new type of single working women's hostel emerged. The handsome, if occasionally austere, façades blended into the Edwardian streetscape. However, architectural plans, literary descriptions and historic photographs reveal distinctive interiors. The hostels featured efficiently planned tiny private spaces alongside generous communal dining and sitting rooms, as well as libraries, music rooms and bicycle stores. Emphatically not charitable or municipal affairs, these were business-minded enterprises, established and advocated by other Edwardian women. In turn, these little-known buildings supported, enabled and empowered a new generation of intrepid working women. This book brings the buildings, and the residents, to vivid life through previously untapped sources. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
