#301 - Frew 2025 Annual Review

X-Band: The Phantom Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2025 69:34

The 2025 Frew annual deserves a stand alone review and we spend a good 70 minutes dissecting it. The theme for this years annual is a monster theme with 8 stories with a mixture of colour & black and white over 220+ pages. What do we like, what do we not like and what rating do we give it? Listen and or watch and find out. Do not remember to let us know what you agree and or disagree with. Annuals are nothing new from around the world with British comics publishing them in hardcover albums during the 1950's to the 1980's as well as other countries publishing them. Frew published their first annual in 1991 and it was an instant hit. Frew published their first one in 1991 and it was an instant hit. Rumours are that it sold out overnight and many collectors bought dozens as investments. Ever since, Frew has released an annual. Bar the odd year (3?), a replica edition of the Frew comics have been released. Loved by some and loathed by others but they are a staple along with the annual.Since the Frew Crew has stood in the gap left by Jim Shepherd, they have released themed annuals with War, artists, Girl Phantom, Cowboy Phantoms, Animals of Edan and now its The Phantom vs The Monsters. For those who want to cherry pick there way through the podcast, we have listed what we disscused and the time stamps. We would however suggest you listen / watch to the whole podcast ;)History & background of the Frew annuals: 2 MinutesOverall thoughts on the annual: 4 Minutes & 30 SecondsStories"The Ghost and the Wolves" by Andrew Constant and Jason Paulos: 17 Minutes & 30 Seconds"Nema" by Andrew Constant and Jason Paulos: 24 Minutes"Looking Back" by Andrew Constant and Giancarlo Caracuzzo: 29 Minutes"Golem" by Johan L. *This is the 200th episode actually published. In Frew 1893, Dudley Hogarth the Frew publisher in his Message from the Publisher suggested that the short story "The Future Phantom: Forever" may be worth a podcast. We listened and here is our thoughts of the 8 page story by Andrew Constant and Massimo Gamberi. To begin with we go over every story and future Phantom which includes the 27th from the Defenders of the Earth TV Show, the 24th from the Phantom 2040 TV Show and a host of others from publishers like Fantomen and Dynamite Entertainment. Andrew also joins us and we go over the story with him. What began as a 40 minute planned podcast has turned into a 80 minute discussion between Andrew Constant and the team (Jermayn Parker, Stephen East and Dan Fraser).Where do you sit with this story? Did you like it? Do you want to see more? We would love to hear from you on what you think of this podcast episode. You can email us at chroniclechamebr@gmail.com or chat with us via our social media profiles: Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram. Andrew also drops a massive exclusive in the podcast on a new story he is working on at the moment. It is worth mentioning that there is the occasional swear word in this podcast - parental guidance is recommended. As always the video will show slides, art examples and props as we discuss the Phantom. The audio only version is attached if you prefer that method. Make sure you subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our YouTube Channel. As we touch upon the future phantoms we drop upon a few past X-Band: The Phantom Podcast's. When we said back in the show notes for #132A, "You knew that having Billy Zane come to Australia meant that you were going to get bombarded with podcasts, right?", we had no idea that we'd be wedging in an actual sit-down podcast interview with the man himself (#133). As it turns out, we did! That's meant that a bit of a delay with the Brisbane recordings coming out, but so be it! A word of warning - the Phantom panel with the Frew Crew (Glenn Ford, Jamie Johnson, Andrew Constant, Paul Mason & Jeremy Macpherson) is not the best quality audio in the world, but it is a very ... interesting.... panel if you can persevere. The Frew Crew reflections at the end are certainly worth a listen as the guys provide a peek behind the curtain of the artist's grind, as well as an interesting morsel or two regarding future plans!4m30 Billy Zane Q&A7m20 The Phantom Panel53m Frew Crew reflectionsMake sure you sign the petition for a new The Phantom movie. It's an odd sort of podcast this time around!About 3 weeks ago we recorded a conversation with Dr Paul Mason and Andrew Constant, the creative duo behind Frew Publications' made-for-kids magazine, Kid Phantom. It was an extensive chat, covering the highs, lows and minutiae of producing Australia's only 100% locally-developed comic book while managing the challenges of licensing and reaching the target market. Then, just a few days before our planned release came the bombshell from Frew: Kid Phantom as a standalone comic release has been cancelled! So the ChronicleChamber team got together to record a short introduction to the interview, placing it in the context of a book that has just been withdrawn from publication. Fair to say that emotions were high with the news so raw! Anyway, we hope you enjoy what has turned out to be a retrospective look at Kid Phantom and as always, Happy Phantoming.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chroniclechamber)
