How does one reach the pivotal moment that propels them into the next chapter of their life? For our guest today, that moment unfolded in a Starbucks, where Jeff Eamers stumbled upon a newspaper ad seeking volunteers for suicide prevention. Having battled his own demons for years, Jeff saw this not just as an opportunity, but as a calling. In his past life, Jeff wore many hats—writer, director, producer, counselor—all while battling the tumultuous challenges of bipolar disorder. Now, he's found peace and purpose as a practicing psychotherapist and the voice behind the upcoming Three Moments in Time podcast. He lives in the California desert with his two dogs and 11 chickens. Jeff's journey is one marked by resilience, vulnerability, and the unwavering determination to confront the darkest aspects of the human experience. But a word of caution: Jeff's story is unfiltered and may touch on themes of mental illness that could trigger some listeners. We discussed: The first hospitalization at 21 marked the onset of a series of mental health challenges for Jeff How a major film opportunity brought Jeff from the advertising world to Los Angeles Jeff reflects on the experience of navigating manic highs and depressive lows Why he transitioned from Hollywood to suicide prevention counseling How the sudden loss of his best friend served as a wake-up call Why Jeff decided to pursue a new academic journey at 55 Jeff shares his understanding of the single most crucial factor in healing Connect with Jeff Mental health in the high desert: A Yucca Valley man, animal rescue and the open landscape via Desert Sun www.eamertherapy.com

As the 'Birds return to the rink from the All Star Break, ready the mic & pen for this Media Roundtable, featuring Tim O'Brien of NBC Palm Springs and Andrew L. John of The Desert Sun.
On Tuesday January 23, 2024, one of the 100-plus reporters who was laid off via Webinar from the Los Angeles Times, stated it was “like a drive-by,” as it was clear that very few at this iconic 142-year-old newspaper had any idea, that in a matter of minutes, they were told that more than 20% of their staff was to be let go. And when events like this take place within a unionized newsroom, the workforce looks towards their guild leadership for help and support. Those tasks fell quickly on the shoulders of Matt Pearce, an 11-year veteran reporter at the Times and for past 4-years President of the Media Guild of the West, a chapter of the NewsGuild-CWA, representing over one-thousand journalists at the Los Angeles Times along with the Dallas Morning News, Arizona Republic, Southern California News Group, Austin American-Statesman, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Phoenix New Times and Desert Sun and other properties. It was only five years ago when the news team cheered when they were introduced to Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, the American transplant surgeon, billionaire, businessman and bio scientist who returned the paper to local ownership after 18 years, when he purchased for $500-million dollars, the Times, along with the San Diego Union-Tribune, from Chicago-based tronc. 2018 reporting directly after the deal was announced, stated that Shiong had “grand plans to restore the Times to greatness, stating: ‘The legacy of this paper is important to save, so what price is that worth?” Shiong announced the hiring of well-respected executive editor, former Wall Street Journal and Time Inc. Exec Norman Pearlstine along 80 new staffers, that including New York Times columnist Sewell Chan and former Slate editor in chief Julia Turner. It was later reported in The Wall Street Journal hat Shiong by investing strongly in news assets would easily achieve profitably by massively growing their digital subscriber base. In 2019 Shiong proclaimed: “I have made a decision to invest what it will take to make sure that the Los Angeles Times remains a viable business for at least another 100 years. When we get to five million ultimately, that will make that possible.” In July of 2023, the digital subscriber base was reported at slightly over 500-thousand, when the Times announced the launching of De Los, a new brand focused on identity and culture targeted to English-speaking Gen Z and millennial Latinos in the U.S. However, on January 23, 2023, it looks like this new venture will cease, since the union's negotiated “first in, first out” departure strategy reportedly resulted in that a large portion of those layoffs, included newly hired diverse staffers. In this episode of “E&P Reports,” we finally get an inside look at the newsroom of the LA Times, just a week after the surprising firing of over 20% of their unionized workforce from News Media West Guild president, Matt Pearce. We learn about how the firing process took place via Webinar, how the Union reacted to the unexpected downsizing, and what they are doing now in retaliation.

Actor STEVE COCHRAN's life was like a page out of the American macho man's handbook. Raised in Wyoming where he was once a cowhand, he carved a memorable career in Hollywood playing gangsters, villains, adulterers, and bad boys in great films like “The Best Years of Our Lives” and “White Heat.” But in a case of art imitating life, this rowdy, randy actor's personal life was just as chaotic and dramatic as his film roles. Find out how his love of women, booze, and trouble proved to be his Achilles heel. In yet another significant development that could bring further changes to California's naturist community, Desert Sun Resort in Palm Springs has been sold for $6,950,000 and is currently under contract, as indicated in public listings on Redfin.com and LoopNet. The specific details about the new owners and their plans remain undisclosed. No public announcement has been made by the club on their website or social media. This sale adds to an expanding series of recent transformations in the state's nudist landscape, and a growing malaise among California naturists, who have seen no less than four nudist clubs either go textile or go up for sale just in the last three months.

He's got a pretty cherry gig for a guy who was a banker in Cleveland, Ohio and blindly moved to California not knowing if that might work out. Initially a contributor to the Coachella Valley Independent, he would later be the personal-pick of renowned columnist and culture writer Bruce Fessier at The Desert Sun as his replacement. Brian Blueskye found himself in the coveted role of reporting on events that included the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, Stagecoach, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and other concerts and special events taking place in the region for both the Desert Sun and its national parent - the USA Today Network. Then, along came the pandemic. Suddenly, he was responsible for tracking and reporting on infections and casualties. Definitely not what he signed up for. On this episode of Big Conversations, Little Bar, Brian talks with Patrick Evans and Randy Florence about the jump from banker to beat reporter, surviving COVID-19, the state of journalism, and his passion for music and entertainment living in a community where options have just exploded!
The Desert Sun's golf writer for nearly four decades, Larry Bohannon is an institution spanning column inches and 18-hole golf courses across the Coachella Valley and around-the-world. The Colorado River, which supplies water to much of the western United States, continues to diminish under historic drought conditions. And California is under pressure to reduce the amount of water it takes. The agricultural industry in California's Imperial Valley alone gets more water than Arizona and Nevada combined – but that's because under law, those farmers have some of the Colorado River's oldest water rights. Citing those rights, California rejected a proposal last week from the six other Colorado River-dependent states on how to divide the water and instead put forward its own plan. We'll take a closer look at the impasse and the impact of the shrinking Colorado River on the Imperial Valley and beyond. Guests: Sammy Roth, energy reporter, Los Angeles Times Janet Wilson, senior environment reporter, The Desert Sun - and Stanford Western Media Fellow

When a New Year's Eve party near Seattle, Washington transformed into a shootout, one of the gunmen fled the area after retrieving multiple firearms from his home. The man started driving, ending up high in the Cascade Mountain Range, where he then fled into the wilds after shooting a park ranger. A massive, unrelenting manhunt unfolded over the next 24 hours, with hundreds of searchers tracking snowy foot impressions and following the shooter's trail through chest-deep snow, icy creeks, and the looming danger of an unstable man with his back against a mountain. A state senator is the star of an unfunny comedy of errors. Let's break it down. Maryland Senator William Smith (the Unfresh Prince) has earned himself the lifetime horrible person award after he introduced the Pregnant Person's Freedom Act of 2022. It's not the name of the bill that got his life flipped-turned upside down, but the contents.I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there- I'll tell you how he became the Unfresh Prince of the Air. This bill's purpose is to revise the fetal murder/ manslaughter statute, which allows for the prosecution of those who intend to cause the death of a viable child through wanton recklessness or disregard. Maryland Senate Bill 669 removes this provision, opening the door for women to abandon children for death, or even kill them with no repercussions whatsoever. Welcome to the new world order, folks. Consider this, Ever since COVID was released, a constant barrage of virtue signaling has filled the airwaves. In a March 2021 op-ed piece for the Desert Sun, former Palm Springs city manager Norm King said that those who were able to get the vaccine and didn't should be charged with first degree murder. Children sent to school with no masks have been told they are killing grandma. "If wearing your mask could save one life," the COVIDIAN Karen's cried, "it's worth it!"When the maskless unvaccinated are considered murderers but killing babies is considered healthcare, you know these guys are up to no good, and they're starting to make trouble in the neighborhood. Making a liberal back down from the Eucharist table of child sacrifice is more rare than cab with dice in the mirror. In 1945, United States immigration officials opened the El Centro Immigration Detention Camp in El Centro, California, to be an administrative holding center for unauthorized Mexican migrants, many of whom had been working on local farms and ranches. From the beginning, migrants were often detained for long periods of time while they served as the unpaid labor force of the center. Conditions were poor in the facility in the decades that followed, and in 1985 the incarcerated migrants (by this time a multinational group) decided to strike. On May 27, 1985, fifteen detained men stormed the mess hall, inspiring somewhere between 175-300 more men to join them. The group refused to work, to go inside, or to eat until their grievances were met. Their complaints included inhumane conditions in the 120-degree heat of the Imperial Valley, poor food quality, inadequate medical treatment, lack of entertainment, physical abuse, psychological intimidation, solitary confinement, and threats of violence. The strike was put down forcefully by the El Centro Tactical Intervention and Control Unit, in full riot gear. Although some of the conditions that led to the strike improved, rampant violence and inhumane treatment continued. In this episode, Kelly briefly tells the history of the El Centro facility and the 1985 Hunger Strike, and interviews Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Jessica Ordaz, author of The Shadow of El Centro: A History of Migrant Incarceration and Solidarity. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons.
