Dr. Matthew Nagra is a doctor naturopathic medicine, a staunch believer in the benefits of a vegan diet, and a defender of scientific integrity. A brief scan of Dr. Nagra's Instagram page will tell you he is dedicated to sharing helpful nutritional information that is back by science. In the process, he has found himself fighting back against the mountains of nutritional misinformation (and disinformation) that is shared every day on social media. This episode was recorded almost 5 years ago, in the early days of COVID lockdown. It was somehow lost shortly after recording but I was luck enough to recover it very recently. I was impressed by the fact that the discussion we had about nutrition, veganism, and making decisions based on science was all still very relevant 5 years later. So I decided it was still worth sharing it.Connect with Dr. Nagra:Instagram.com/dr.matthewnagraConnect with Harbir:Instagram.com/harbirsian.odWatch on YouTube:youtube.com/harbirsianodLove the show? Protein — how much do we need? What's the healthiest way to consume it? Can we get enough from plant-based diets? Until recent decades, protein hasn't been quite as prominent in public health discussions as sugar and fats. However, with longer lifespans emphasizing the importance of protein for long-term health, and growing confusion around the quality and quantity of protein needed, it has become a highly debated macronutrient. In ‘Your Brain On… Protein', we explore: • The brain health benefits (and general health benefits) of protein • Plant-based protein vs. meat protein, and supplements like protein powders • How much protein we really need to eat every day • Ways we can all introduce more protein into our diets • Why ‘health' influencers are suddenly recommending unusually high levels of protein consumption • How we measure the quality of proteins, including digestibility and absorption In this episode, we're joined by two fantastic nutrition experts: DR. MATTHEW NAGRA, nutritionist and science communicator. DR. ALAN FLANAGAN, esteemed nutrition scientist (previously featured in ‘Your Brain On… Sugar' and ‘Your Brain On… Fats' ‘Your Brain On' is hosted by neurologists, scientists and public health advocates Ayesha and Dean Sherzai. The debate between animal-based and plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) has garnered significant attention, especially concerning their impact on cardiovascular health. As PBMAs become increasingly popular, questions about their nutritional profiles and long-term health implications have emerged. Are these alternatives genuinely healthier than traditional meat, or do their highly processed nature and high sodium content undermine potential benefits? This discussion is crucial as dietary choices increasingly influence public health policies and consumer behaviors. Dr. Matthew Nagra's recent review in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology sheds light on these issues by analyzing the nutritional differences between PBMAs and meat. The review highlights the potential cardiovascular benefits of PBMAs, such as lower levels of saturated fat and cholesterol, alongside higher fiber content. However, the review also points out the significant variability in PBMAs' nutritional content, raising questions about standardization and consumer guidance. Understanding these differences is key to making informed dietary decisions and shaping future food industry practices. With growing consumer interest and public health implications, several pertinent questions arise: How do different PBMAs compare in their nutritional impact? What role does food processing play in their health outcomes? How can consumers make the best choices given the variability in PBMAs? In our discussion, Dr. Nagra will cover all these details, providing a comprehensive look at the current state of PBMAs and their role in a healthy diet. Dr. Matthew Nagra joins the Plant-Based Podcast again to break down a new review he and his colleagues recently published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology on plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) and their impact on heart health. This review, which is linked in the show notes, is called “Animal vs. Plant-Based Meat: A Hearty Debate”, and looks at studies spanning from 1970 to 2023. It explores the nutritional profiles of PBMAs compared to their animal-based counterparts and explores their effects on markers of cardiovascular health. They found that compared to meat, plant based meat alternatives were: generally lower in saturated fat, higher in polyunsaturated fat, and higher in dietary fibre. In a profound discussion, experts delve into the alarming connection between aluminum exposure and the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Dr. McDougall asserts that a significant portion of dementia cases, particularly Alzheimer's, are linked to aluminum poisoning, a theory supported by decades of research. This revelation emphasizes the importance of understanding the sources of aluminum exposure in our daily lives, from cooking utensils to antiperspirants. Moreover, diet and lifestyle also play pivotal roles in determining Alzheimer's susceptibility, with high-fat and high-cholesterol diets compromising the body's ability to defend and repair itself. Dr. Nagra expands on the discussion, pointing out that while some cases have genetic predispositions, the vast majority are influenced by lifestyle choices. It's a wake-up call to rethink our daily choices and make informed decisions to protect our brain health. #AlzheimersAwareness #AluminumExposure #BrainHealth

Within veganism is a well-known movement of “absolutely no oil” proponents. Several high-profile vegan doctors and cardiologists promote a 100% no-oil diet for everyone across the population. In this episode, we discuss why this doesn't fit with the current peer-reviewed research. Not all oils are equal, and there's a large body of research showing certain types of oil are, in fact, good for us. Dr. Matthew Nagra is a Naturopathic Doctor devoted to bringing the most up-to-date, evidence-based nutrition information to both the public and his patients at his clinic in Vancouver. (We also discuss how science and naturopathy can coexist!) In 2018 Dr. Nagra graduated from the Boucher Institute after completing his Bachelor's of Science in Microbiology at the University of Victoria. He is also certified in plant-based nutrition through eCornell and the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, and was a contributing author on Professional Health Systems' Nutrition textbook. He is also a public speaker and often tackles misinformation around diet and dives deep into the latest nutrition research on his social media.

What started as a simple tweet, turned into an episode on the Plant Based Eating for Health Show with Dr. Matthew Nagra. The response to the tweet was incredible, and obviously hit a nerve with thousands of men and women around the globe. “Why is it that no one seems to bat an eye when a parent feed their kids unhealthy, garbage fast food, but the minute they say, "I'm raising my children on a healthy, whole food, plant-based diet" people scream child abuse? Really?? Have u checked stats on disease & obesity 4 kids?” Based on the responses the tweet received, I put out a request to my Twitter followers for a medical professional who advocates for children eating a healthy, plant-based diet. Within minutes I received a message from Dr. Nagra, who had been referred to me from my friend and colleague, Sandra Nomoto. Sandra is the author of the newly released book, Vegan Marketing Success Stories. Connections Matter One thing about the vegan community is people know people. Based on the recommendation by Sandra, followed by watching a previous interview Dr. Nagra did about the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle for children, I just knew I had to have him on the show. Dr. Nagra grew up in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island. From a young age he struggled with multiple health issues such asthma, allergies, and weight management. It wasn't until taking control of his own health and transitioning to a plant-based diet that Dr. Nagra noticed significant improvements, which were ultimately the catalyst for the career he chose. His mission is to help others do the same.

Will oils cause heart disease? Are omega 6 fats inflammatory? There are few questions as hotly debated, even amongst health practitioners, as the subject of which oils - and how much - are beneficial, or even safe to eat. But is it REALLY a controversy in the research? Maybe not…and what the science says might actually surprise you. Dr Nagra is deeply committed to using the best scientific evidence to inform plant-based nutrition practice. No “one off” lab studies here! Eating meat could help you live longer. That's according to research, but the results appear to have a major flaw. Dr. Matthew Nagra joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room LIVE to talk about the findings and how he believes researchers missed the mark by such a wide margin. As he points out, the data could also be interpreted to show another major carcinogen could also extend your life. But nobody is arguing that smoking is the key to longevity. Dr. Nagra also answers questions sent into The Doctor's Mailbag. - Is chicken a healthier option? - Are lean meats harmful to heart health? - Can chocolate increase cholesterol? - Does sugar increase cholesterol? - Many more! Clear up false food facts on the season finale of The Exam Room! There is a dizzying amount of misinformation spread about plant-based diets on a daily basis. You need meat to survive. There is no way that you will get enough nutrients. Dairy is required in order to have strong bones. You won't live as long if you just eat plants. When you first consider going vegan it can be nearly impossible to know what to believe and who to trust. However, the confusion ends today because the truth stops here. Dr. Matthew Nagra joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to talk about five of the biggest “false facts” regarding what happens to your health by taking meat and dairy off the menu. Dr. Nagra is quickly becoming one of the most trusted nutrition advocates in his home country of Canada and worldwide thanks to a strong internet following. He presents compelling and scientifically-backed arguments on the following claims: - You can't get all the nutrients you need by eating a plant-based diet. - Vegans are more likely to have brittle and broken bones. - Plant sources of protein are inferior to animal proteins. - It is hard to get enough iron without eating meat. - Soy is unhealthy and causes a man's chest to become unsightly. To that last point, wait until you hear the unexpected food that Dr. Nagra says is one of the biggest reasons men grow breast tissue. — — — Chuck Carroll Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ChuckCarrollWLC Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: http://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — Dr. Matthew Nagra Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/dr.matthewnagra Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr.matthewnagra Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.matthewnagra — — — 21-Day Vegan Kickstart App iOS: https://bit.ly/VegKStrt-iOS Android: https://bit.ly/VegKStrtAndrd Web: https://www.pcrm.org/kickstart — — — Barnard Medical Center Appointments https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed 202-527-7500 — — — Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or many other podcast providers. The internet really gets its knickers in a knot about soy...but what about the actual science? I've asked one of my favourite nutrition science communicators, Dr Matthew Nagra ND, to come and untangle the web of controversy about soy and serve some straight up science to help us eat with confidence. Dr Nagra is an amazing resource when it comes to evaluating the science of nutrition and I value the way he breaks down new research into very digestible (ha!) posts on his Instagram. Dr. Matthew Nagra is a Naturopathic Doctor practicing at Tonume (To-New-Me) Integrated Health in Vancouver, BC. He has a BSc in Microbiology from the University of Victoria and completed his ND training at the Boucher Institute. He has been vegan for over 10 years, is certified in plant-based nutrition through the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, and regularly shares information regarding nutrition and health across his social media pages. In addition, he volunteers for multiple non-profit organizations including Nutritionfacts.org and The Happy Herd Farm Sanctuary, and most recently acted as a scientific reviewer for the new book, “The Proof is in the Plants,” by Simon Hill. On this episode, we talk about: Dr Nagra's own health journey, including how he went from eating McDonald's to eating a whole food, plant-based diet His path to becoming a naturopath What the heck a phytoestrogen actually is and why it's different than your body's estrogen The science-based health benefits of soy foods Why animal studies make for confusing dietary advice Soy's connection to breast cancer and other cancers How soy affects hormone balance in men Soy protein quality of soy, and how it stacks up to whey protein in the research Can you build muscle on soy foods? The problematic nature of internet nutrition advice and why not all health professionals are actually evidence-informed How much soy you can safely eat in a day Whether you should give soy milk to your kids Do you need to worry about GMOs? What about lectins? The truth about nutrition books that might surprise you, and Dr Nagra's work on Simon Hill's new book, The Proof is in the Plants Dr Nagra is a deep well of information on plant-based nutrition and I hope this episode will finally put to rest the confusion on soy! In Episode #133 I sit down with Dr Matthew Nagra to tackle the almighty protein topic! You know, the nutrient we are all fascinated by. What is protein? How much do we need? What's the difference between animal and plant protein? The best types of protein for good health? How do we optimise protein intake for promoting lean muscle and strength? We cover all of this and more - all through an evidence-based lens. Not what random folks are saying at the gym or online in the comments section. But what the highest quality science says. Specifically we cover: What protein is How much protein we need How much protein the average omnivore and vegetarian/vegan consumes Incomplete versus complete protein - how people are incorrectly using these terms Protein quality - how scoring systems work The difference between animal and plant protein when it comes to quality - and what this means for your food selection Animal versus plant protein and health outcomes Is soy protein safe? (e.g tempeh, tofu and soy milk) Best protein swaps you could consider making today Animal versus plant protein and performance outcomes (e.g lean muscle and strength) Optimising protein intake for performance Take home messages Resources: Follow Matt and Simon on Instagram Current Protein Intake Protein intake trends and conformity with the Dietary Reference Intakes in the United States: analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001-2014 Protein Intake in Western living Vegetarian and Vegans Nutrient Profiles of Vegetarian and Non Vegetarian Dietary Patterns Christopher Gardner's 2019 paper on protein Maximizing the intersection of human health and the health of the environment with regard to the amount and type of protein produced and consumed in the United States Plant's contain all amino acids Dietary Protein and Amino Acids in Vegetarian Diets—A Review Maximizing the intersection of human health and the health of the environment with regard to the amount and type of protein produced and consumed in the United States Joel Craddock's paper on scoring systems used to calculate protein quality Limitations with the Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score (DIAAS) with Special Attention to Plant-Based Diets: a Review The study that Dr Nagra mentions where they fed cooked plant protein to pigs (rather than raw)True ileal amino acid digestibility and digestible indispensable amino acid scores (DIAASs) of plant-based protein foods Animal versus plant protein and health outcomes (risk of cardiovascular disease, mortality etc)

We're delving into one of the most controversial nutrition topics in the vegan community: SOY. I interview Dr. Matthew Nagra to interpret the latest research on soy, and ask all the questions you had about this heavily contested food including: Is soy bad for your health? Is soy estrogenic? Will it increase breast tissue in men? Can it have adverse effects on women's hormones? Does soy cause acne? Is soy consumption linked to cancer? Should we be seeking out non GMO soy? How much soy is too much? We also clear the air on other highly controversial foods in the plant-based community including nutritional yeast, vegan protein powder and oil.
