Director Matteo Garrone made his name with the landmark Neapolitan crime film GOMORRAH, and has since demonstrated a penchant for gothic tales tinged with dark fantasy, including TALE OF TALES, DOGMAN and PINOCCHIO. With IO CAPITANO, Italy's official selection for the Academy Award® Best International Film category, Garrone turns his attention back to real-life subject matter, where he finds a story of bravery and heroism in the face of harrowing danger that's equal to any classical epic or enchanting fairy tale. Musician-turned-actor Seydou Sarr gives an impressive performance as Seydou, a Senegalese teenager who lives in an over-crowded house with his mother and younger sisters. Along with his cousin Moussa (Moustapha Fall), Seydou has been working odd jobs and saving money, preparing for a move to Italy, with dreams of pursuing a music career. Along the way, they will contend with shakedowns from corrupt border guards, mistreatment from human traffickers, a dangerous and deadly crossing of the Sahara Desert, and imprisonment, abuse and modern-day slavery in Libya. Director and co-writer Matteo Garrone stops by to talk about his “reverse shot” of the immigration experience while unfurling an epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Italy and his confidence in the two young, untested actors to embody the determination, courage, and character he needed to make this film such a resounding success. Our next Halloween episode focuses on Tale of Tales, the European dark fairy tale film that features violence, sex, giant fleas, porterhouse-steak-sized hearts, and everything else the House of Mouse won't let us see. Panelists: Jack, Jess, Eric
Katrina and Geoff are back to finish up the frame story of The Tale of Tales by Giambattista Basile but first, one last story about a hunt for a woman started by the colors red, white, and black. But unlike the other tale, the color black is framed as a force for harm, giving us some cultural context on how to view the tricolors in the tale. With Diarrhea Linda out of the picture, we see if Zoza is able to outwit Lucia and claim the prince that she cried a bucket of tears for. And Katrina ends with a mic drop quote from Maria Tatar.
In this episode, Geoff and Katrina dive into The Tale of Tales by Giambattista Basile for another installment of the Snow White series. The tri-colors of fairy tales (white, black, and red) appear over and over but in Snow White we think of these elements being embodied by one beautiful woman. Retelling these tales inside The Tale of Tales requires an understanding of the frame narrative that The Crow/The Raven is found in so Katrina embarks on framing the stories with the trials and quest of Zoza, no matter who many nuts and tears are required.

We're back like we said we'd be last time! And to prove how good the show is now, we perform a radio play we wrote wherein Logan decides to hey let's switch to a different telecommunications app while we're already in the middle of recording the episode! And could you imagine even the fun that could be?! We also talk about Il racconto dei racconti, the international film of Matteo Garrone, Salma Hayek, John C. Reilly, Toby Jones, and other people and folk tales and junk! And can you guess the answer of Matt's movie pun game? You're definitely gonna know it's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy if you read this sentence! Hooray! Tale of Tales!
Excerpts from Abdiel's epic poem on the great Old-Testament prophet, ELIJAH! In the spirit of Dante, Shakespeare, and Homer, this 12-book epic relives the stunning miracles of the great prophet as described in the Old Testament—fed by ravens, raising the dead, commanding the rain, calling down fire from Heaven, outrunning horses, ascending to Heaven. But along with all this, Abdiel weaves a rich thread of mythological influences: shapeshifting goddesses, shamanic journeys, dueling dragons, Queen Jezebel's seductions, and dissension in the ranks of King Ahab's bodyguard. Raunchy yet reverent, this timeless tale takes wing in the poet's pen, the poet's voice!

The "Tale of Tales" is a very famous, moderately deranged collection of folklore from 16th century Italy. It's by the author Giambattista Basile, a storyteller who traveled the Mediterranean region collecting stories. The collection known as "Tale of Tales" follows a similar framing narrative to "1001 Nights", with the storyteller telling the king stories in a very loosely-connected fashion. I'm not even going to say the titles for today's stories, but they are two of the most famous in the collection and wildly unpredictable. They're gross, violent, weird, and interesting - so, basically like everyday life. The creature is a man...who is a bat. But he's not Batman, because Batman can't handle this little guy's intensity. ----- Sponsors: Find so many awesome books on Audible. Driven from their homelands by an enemy known as ‘The Adversary’, Snow White, Bigby Wolf, Bluebeard, Prince Charming, Beauty and the Beast plus many more ‘fables’ have established a secret community known as Fabletown. However, instead of living happily ever after turmoil comes to Fabletown when Snow’s sister, Rose Red, is feared to be the victim of foul play. Who Killed Rose Red? Matteo Garrone's fantasy film Tale of Tales is a modern interpretation of a 17th century fairytale collection filled with dark gothic strangeness. Ralph Fiennes plays Richard III in a new production at London's Almeida Theatre. He's a very cynical psychopath as well as a ruthless monarch Annie Proulx's Barkskins is a large novel dealing with an enormous subject - the irreversible catastrophe of deforestation Tate Modern has opened a new extension: Switch House. The film Tale of Tales is a fantastical interweaving of fairytales, based on a collection of stories published by the 17th Century poet Gianbattista Basile. It stars Salma Hayek, Toby Jones, Vincent Cassel and John C Riley and is directed by Matteo Garrone, who previously made Gomorrah. Layers of watercolours and gouache, painted, she believed, under the influence of a spirit, Houghton's work has long been neglected. Now her abstract works have been reexamined as precursors of the work of artists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian. Suburra portrays a dark and rain-soaked Rome, where mafia families plot to turn the city's waterfront into the next Las Vegas. The scheme involves shady deals with politicians, the Vatican and warring organised crime gangs. With Francine Stock Toby Jones reflects on his new role, a king who becomes obsessed by a flea, in the historical drama Tale Of Tales. When David Bowie announced the retirement of Ziggy Stardust to a stunned audience in 1973, D.A. Pennebaker was there to catch that historic moment on his camera. As he was when Jimi Hendrix set alight to his guitar at the Monterey festival and Germaine Greer verbally jousted with Norman Mailer at a town hall debate. Pennebaker and his partner Chris Hegedus discuss their five decades of film and history making. Francine talks to the winner of the first awards for Virtual Reality at this year's Sheffield Documentary Festival. Dominique Nasta reveals why film-going was compulsory in communist Romania and a few other things you might not have known about cinema in the Eastern Bloc.

Spoilerpiece Theatre turns 100 this week, so the guys do something special to thank their fans! Since it’s the 100th episode that also means Dave has finally seen WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY. Does he appreciate it as emphatically as Kris? Find out starting at the 4:00 mark. Next Evan and Kris cover THE CONJURING 2 (at 17:53), a super long James Wan horror movie with a lot of jump scares and a lot of little annoying things that make Evan very angry. After his anger cools, Evan reviews NOW YOU SEE ME 2 (at 42:38), which has some great magic scenes, but a convoluted plot that relies too much on you remembering information from the first movie. Lastly, Kris discusses TALE OF TALES (at 54:54), a messed up Italian anthology film that confuses the heck out of Dave and Evan with its interwoven tales that have no connection. Kris uses the conversation as an opportunity to state his case about why there should be more anthology films and television shows.

Christopher Walken, who's heard in the smash hit "The Jungle Book," has a good old fashioned acting role (where you can actually see him) in "The Family Fang" which also happens to be directed by Justin Bateman. Neil Rosen, Bill McCuddy and Bill Bregoli give their opinions of it and you'll also hear what Christopher Walken has to say about his storied career. Plus there's the new indie film "Elvis and Nixon," starring Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey which is about, well, Elvis and Nixon. Then there's a fairy tale for adults called "Tale of Tales." We also look at the Nina Simone biopic "Nina" and we talk about the Tribeca Film Festival for all of you who just happen to be in New York over the next few weeks and want to do more than buy overpriced t-shirts.
