Ciao! Reversing Climate Change

Reversing Climate Change

“How do we fix this? How do we solve problems—not just make it ‘less bad’? When I look around at the approaches that people are taking towards climate change, it’s all mitigation. It’s all trying to make things ‘less bad’ than they’re going to be. Everyone seems to accept it that this is going to happen, and we’re just going to have to deal with the effects. Well, I don’t. I don’t accept that.” Nori (formerly Geagora) seeks to solve the problem of climate change by reversing the process that got us into this mess. We’ve burned fossil fuels and emitted gasses into the air. So why can’t we simply remove these same gasses from the atmosphere and put them somewhere—in the soil, in drywall, or even tennis shoes? The Nori team developed their idea for the ConsenSys Blockchain for Social Impact hackathon. Their concept is to build a carbon removal marketplace on the blockchain that enables customers to pay other people to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, eventually lowering the overall concentration of CO2 to 350 parts per million. On the inaugural podcast, Ross and Christophe are joined by Nori CEO Paul Gambill to discuss the concept of carbon removal and the scope of the problem presented by climate change. Paul addresses Nori's approach to reversing climate change, explaining the necessity of removing carbon from the atmosphere rather than simply reducing emissions. They also cover the basics of the blockchain and cryptocurrency, revealing how Nori would use tokens to eliminate the problems presented by the current cap and trade system. Listen and learn how Nori's carbon removal marketplace would function, how technology could be used to validate sequestration activities, and how companies are innovating around carbon removal.   Key Takeaways [5:24] The concept of carbon removal Taking CO2 out of atmosphere permanently Trees accomplish through photosynthesis Direct air capture (machines suck CO2 out of atmosphere) Use to create new solid material (i.e.: drywall)   [9:31] Why carbon removal is necessary Climate change is real Too much CO2 in atmosphere More than 408 ppm, rising 2 ppm every year 36B tons emitted annually   [11:10] The carbon levels that would put us in the ‘danger zone’ UNIPCC estimates that 450 ppm is when things get bad Organic matter trapped under ice (permafrost) When ice melts, organic matter exposed to air Organic matter decomposes and releases methane Warming potential of methane 25X more potent than CO2   [12:36] Paul’s take on fixing climate change Current approach to make ‘less bad’ What if we reversed the process? Social unrest results from draught   [18:40] Shortcomings of the cap and trade system Promotes reduction rather than removal of CO2 Middlemen (i.e.: legal compliance, auditing and accounting) add to overhead Creates additionality (build plants to receive credits) Must find counterparty to buy offsets   [33:35] The mechanics of Nori  Realigns incentive structure, builds carbon removal marketplace Makes it easier to pay people to sequester CO2  Create cryptocurrency token backed by carbon removal assets Each token equivalent to one ton of CO2 Receive tokens (negative emissions credits) for removing CO2 Tokens traded by speculators on third-party exchange Establishes universal carbon price   [37:18] How sequestration activities are validated Current system has 200-plus protocols Auditors validating manually, further increases overhead Nori seeks to make validation easier via IoT, automatic sensors   [38:31] The Carbon Harvest project example Incentivizes farmer to store CO2 in soil Farmers use cover crops, rotate crops and stop tilling Get paid to approach farming in different way IOT would measure CO2 stored in soil, farmers paid based on increase   [41:46] How companies are innovating around carbon removal Interface building carbon-storing carpet Nori would provide quasi-subsidy   [42:56] How third parties could develop in the ecosystem Financier invest in sequestration project, pay cash for tokens Growth in value = profit model for third-party lender Suppliers, buyers and speculators create three-sided platform   Connect with Ross & Christophe Nori Carbon A List Geagora’s Hackathon Submission   Resources Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Bitcoin White Paper Rethinking Money: How New Currencies Turn Scarcity into Prosperity by Bernard Lietaer and Jacqui Dunne Carbon Removal Seattle Meetup Interface

In this conversation, Bernard Lietaer reveals how our relationship with money has become unconscious. We have forgotten that we designed and created the idea of money. It seems money is managing us rather than us using it to serve our needs. “Money is an agreement,” says Bernard. “What is interesting about this definition is that one can change it once it stops working for us.” Bernard reviews alternatives to the current system that we seem tied to, one he calls “patriarchal” because it is a single currency system, created top-down, that promotes short-term rather than long-term thinking. He also discusses places he has seen both acceptance and resistance to these alternative systems. Bernard ends the conversation by speculating on what it will take for a money revolution. What will it take to raise global consciousness around the nature of money, our behavior patterns around it, and the existence of other possibilities? BIO Bernard Lietaer, author of The Future of Money, is an international expert in the design and implementation of currency systems.  He has studied and worked in the field of money for more than 30 years in an unusually broad range of capacities including as a Central Banker, a fund manager, a university professor, and a consultant to governments in numerous countries, multinational corporations, and community organizations. He co-designed and implemented the convergence mechanism to the single European currency system (the Euro) and served as president of the Electronic Payment System at the National Bank of Belgium (the Belgian Central Bank). He co-founded and managed GaiaCorp, a top performing currency fund whose profits funded investments in environmental projects. A former professor of International Finance at the University of Louvain, he has also taught at Sonoma State University and Naropa University.  He is currently a Research Fellow at the Center for Sustainable Resources of the University of California at Berkeley.  He is also a member of the Club of Rome, a Fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, the World Business Academy, and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Bernard Lietaer has written numerous books and articles about money systems, including Of Human Wealth (2011), Monnaies Régionales (2008), and The Mystery of Money (2000).

When you swipe your card at your local coffee shop it takes 3-5 business days for the transaction to take place. Will blockchain change that? Blockchain tech refers to mutually distributed ledgers that underpins cryto-currencies like Bitcoin. Michael Mainelli started designing shared distributed ledgers 20 years ago . He’s a leading thinker in fintech and Emeritus Professor of Commerce at Gresham College, London. He is also the co-founder and Chairman of Z/Yen, the City of London’s leading commercial think-tank established in 1994 to promote societal advance through better finance and technology. In this episode you'll learn:What blockchain is and isn't and what it means to you.How blockchain will impact you and other possible applications. How disruptive will blockchain tech be and how are financial institutions responding. What applications are emerging out of mutual distributed ledgers. Will blockchain change the transaction fees charged by banks? What difference will blockchain make to the 2.5 million people who don't have official identity? How blockchain tech can be a force for good. BLOCKCHAIN DEFINED A mutual distributed ledger – more simply referred to as a blockchain is a computer data structure with the following capabilities: n Mutual – blockchains are shared across organizations, owned equally by all and dominated by no-one; n Distributed – blockchains are inherently multi-locational data structures and any user can keep his or her own copy, thus providing resilience and robustness; n Ledger – blockchains are immutable, once a transaction is written it cannot be erased and, along with multiple copies, this means that the ledger’s integrity can easily be proven. Another way to think of blockchains is as permanent time-stamping engines for computer records. Timestamps can be used to prove that data elements were entered at or before a certain time and have not been altered. - M. Mainelli from www.longfinance.net To learn more about the movement toward long term economics go to www.longfinance.netHost Dawna Jones also interviewed Bernard Lietaer on complementary currencies as a way to stablize the monetary system. Is it possible for a conscious shift to a new localised monetary way of life?Complimentary currencies, LETS. ‘local exchange trade systems’, mutual credit systems, barter exchange, including time banks and green dollars.Entailing the decentralisation of money, as well as creating a monetary unit that is democratic, accessible and retains its value? With a cast that includes Vandana Shiva, Thomas Greco, David Korten, Charles Eisenstein, Jean Huston, Elisabet Sahtouris, Bernard Lietaer, John Perkins, Hazel Henderson and Riane Eisler, this brilliant video needs to be seen by as many people possible - in all countries.Katie Teague with no experience in the profession of digital media became successful in her art form when she committed, by saying a full YES!As a therapist Katie noticed people carrying worries and concerns about money, as well as our disconnection from both our selves and the natural world. This as a result of the subtle and not so subtle abuses of how much money controls us, whilst at the same time we exploit the earth and the sacred to gain our riches. This gave her the impulse to document her findings in relationship to money, its uses, the lack of it, and ways to earn money by means that are outside of mainstream consciousness. Working four years to put it together with assistance from a Navajo medicine man that inspired the name of her production company ‘storm cloud media’ and who implored her to not start anything that does not end in beauty and for her to commit to giving beauty back to beauty. In the unfoldment of this interview we hear that John Perkins the author of ‘the confessions of an economic hit man’ described business today as ‘predatory economics that goes with the speed of wild fire around the world’ whilst Hazel Henderson calls it ‘the hoax of the global casino – a giant Ponzi scheme’ and of the anger when people make the effort to find out, or are stung by being on the receiving end of it - a shift in consciousness starts to awaken us.Basically we know our human nature even in a global context is not malicious, but we have become entwined in a monetary system that is set up to exploit, that is extractive and the collateral damage to families, neighbourhoods, cities and countries under present esculating vulture capitalism, is actually with out end. As exemplified by Wall St and the centralised banking system they are eroding our values plus physical and emotional wellbeing. With unrelenting pressure being put on the biosphere like never before too.For when we research the system, it is designed ultimately to collapse because it has to feed off continuous growth, which is not achievable on a finite planet. Yet the mainstream of society  is yet to grok this. With over 7 billion people on our planet today the urgency of finding a better more equitable economic system has never been more critical. This is the question that the grass roots organizations are taking forward at this moment. From the lessons of the Occupy Movement to localized solutions, many people are still looking to evolve and involve themselves to find an answer to this vexing challenge. This interview talks of the mysterious, of synergy, of an emergent quality that is organic and inclusive of wholeness and of the very possibility of an energy that comes about to self-organise and take us deeper into conscious connection, especially as mother earth groans as her ecosystems take the hit from the extractive corporations who straddle her girth.Katies excellent inspiring FREE DVD is available to download on www.moneyandlifemovie.com I donated $10.00 as I believe in the exchange of energy, but it is FREE.

Bryan Innes and his partner Joanna Pearsall were the initiators of NZ's first EcoShow, and to this day continue their interests in the ecological and sustainability realm. Now based in Turangi at the base of lake Taupo, they work the land at 'Awhi' Farm - the Maori word for embrace, which they are turning into a living example of sustainability and earth systems. From working with soil, compost and mulch to tasting the sweetness of eating their own home grown organic food, they are truly living in harmony with the land. Bryan is also experimenting with building homes with local earth materials that are cheap and affordable. Building one's own earth house is far cheaper than the mainstream models; these houses are insulated and warm, plus wooden cordwood housing actually breathes, and is ideal for asthmatics and those with certain allergies. Bryan is also importing sustainable tools, such as scythes that are as easy and efficient as a petrol or electric weed eater, and better for you ergonomically, plus other tools made of bronze, with quality as good as steel, as bronze does not rust. Also, following the Precautionary Principle, he is readying their lifestyle for energy decline as the global economic collapse continues to unravel.Bryan is currently engaging Bernard Lietaer, the Belgian who was the architect of the Euro, who has shifted his allegiance to localized currencies, recognizing that the small micro-monetary systems have far more merit if we are to find a way forward. One example of this is the JAK interest free bank in Sweden.Bryan is a gentle steadfast soul who is deeply confident about facing the future with our untapped potential for innovation and harmonious community.www.ecoshow.co.nz
