With the amount of time folks invest in their news feeds, social scrolls, podcasts, and hot-takes, you'd think we'd have a better grasp on “the whole picture.” But we only operate with a partial perspective regardless of the situation or issue. This universal truth pushes many of us toward the false comfort of binary thinking. Podcast host and Professor of Criminal Justice at Plymouth State University Dr. Mark Fischler says we don't have to pick sides. He believes that if we can get comfortable holding multiple truths at once, even if we don't understand them, we can solve society's most distressing problems. GUEST BIO Mark Fischler is an award-winning professor of criminal justice at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. He is a former NH Public Defender. Mark also hosts a podcast on the Integral Life website called Integral Justice Warrior. Authentic Leaders Group Are you a therapist stepping into leadership for the first time? Ken Wilber is a philosopher and the author of more than 25 books which have been translated into 30 languages. His work attempts to integrate all fields of human knowledge into one “theory of everything”, which he calls Integral Theory. This draws connections between fields as far ranging as: systems theory, evolutionary biology, anthropology, quantum mechanics, Jungian psychology, neuroscience, sociology, and eastern mysticism. This interview introduces some of Wilber's key ideas, including: stages of development; waking up, cleaning up, and growing up; and the 4 quadrants. To access our conference library of 200+ fascinating psychology talks and interviews (with certification), please visit: https://twumembers.com Described as “The Einstein of Consciousness”, Ken Wilber is a fascinating character, who began a zen meditation practice at the age of 11. An intellectual prodigy as a child, Wilber briefly attended Duke University, before dropping out to immerse himself in a rigorous and multidisciplinary self-education. With an IQ of 175, he is the most published philosopher alive, and his 25 books have been translated into 30 languages. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. One of the core frameworks in Wilber's Integral Theory is The 4 Quadrants, which this interview focuses on. The Seven Sins of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) — Highlights by Integral Life
Hey Folks, This week we're looking at Maestro, Bradley Cooper's new movie about Leonard Bernstein. Bernstein has been a favorite of mine since I happened upon a lecture he gave in the 70s charting the development of music from a single note to the full musical polyphony we have today, as well as the two polarities in nature that transform sound into art (The Greatest Five Minutes in Musical Education). Maestro tells the story of Bernstein in three distinct periods, each rendered with the perspective and language of the time, quite literally in the first segment which is filmed in 35mm black and white and spoken in the Mid-Atlantic accent. It's one of the best attempts I've seen at resisting interpreting the past through contemporary sensibilities. As such we get a palpable transmission of the evolution of not only the artist himself but also the culture at large. This episode is edited from my live Fireside Chat, hosted by the Integral Life practice community. Nomali Perera, the founder of the community (and lover of Maestro), and several listeners weigh in too. I hope you can join us for the next Fireside Chat on Wednesday, February 21, at 1pm PT, 9pm GMT, where we look at culture and politics through an integral lens. I hope you enjoy the episode and check out Maestro on Netflix and in theaters. Jeff Salzman
In this episode, I take another look at the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once in light of its popularity and controversy – including in the integral community. I also consider how taking one new perspective on the play, The Realistic Joneses by Will Eno, turned it from infuriating to infatuating. And more on the ongoing saga of pronouns. Enjoy the episode! From a Live Fireside Chat at Integral Life, this recording is from earlier in the summer of 2023.

Ep. 69 (Part 3 of 3) | Corey deVos is the heart and center of Integral Life, the organization that revolves around the work of Ken Wilber. Corey became passionate about Integral Theory at the age of 19, and in this lively conversation, he is clearly every bit as passionate about the actuality and the promise of Integral today. Here, Corey gives a terrifically lucid explanation of what the term Integral encompasses: a stage of psychological development, a description of Ken Wilber's life's work, and a comprehensive map that comes alive for people, guiding their way and making sense out of enormously complex issues. Corey also describes Integral as a gateway between two massive phases in human history—the “adolescent” phase of collective development now starting to fall behind us and an integrated phase quite possibly ahead.Corey infuses the complex topics under discussion—the Integral metatheory, social issues that never seem to get resolved, human evolution itself—with optimism and enthusiasm, clarity and light, a testament to his own embodiment of Integral consciousness. At Integral Life, Corey co-hosts The Ken Show (with Ken Wilber), applies Integral to social issues like racism and justice in his podcast series, and excels at finding creative ways of translating the complexities of Integral Theory into easy-to-understand nuggets of information. This conversation is a brilliant, beautiful illumination of the Integral vision, covering how Integral has evolved and describing what it can do for our future. Watch the full 1-hour discussion here: https://integrallife.com/navigating-the-meaning-crisis/ John Vervaeke, PhD is an award-winning lecturer at the University of Toronto in the departments of psychology, cognitive science and Buddhist psychology. His work involves constructing a bridge between science and spirituality in order to understand the experience of meaningfulness and the cultivation of wisdom so as to afford awakening from what is often experienced by members of society as “the meaning crisis.” In 2022, Nomali Perera facilitated a study group at Integral Life using the teachings of John Vervaeke from his Awakening from the Meaning Crisis YouTube video series. This video is from Mr. Vervaeke's visit with study group participants for a lively Q&A. In the first half of this very rich discussion, John talks with Nomali, Jeff, and the rest of the group about his three major concerns about stage models, and why he doesn't emphasize them in his own work: - Psychometric skepticism – uncertainty around how we are measuring and validating these measurements, - The problem of the “monolithic mind” — the idea that the mind is a “whole”, which wholly moves from one stage to the next, - Underlying founders' bias — stage models often bias the model-maker, who tend to represent themselves as the highest stage(s) in the model. Whether we agree with John's criticisms of stage models, or we see these criticisms already being addressed by other elements of Integral metatheory, these nonetheless offer some exceptionally important guardrails around how we wield and communicate these ideas. Integral theory in many ways represents a “simplicity on the other side of complexity” — but if we are being overly simplistic with these ideas, then we begin to lose some much-needed resolution, and are left only with a blurry map that can be misread and misapplied in all sorts of ineffective or even abusive ways.

In a previous video, Everything You Think You Know About Integral Theory Is Wrong, we met with Mark Forman to talk about and address a number of the commonly heard criticisms of Integral Theory and the Integral community. In this follow-up discussion, we are joined by Mark Forman and Nomali Perera to take a candid look at a number of the teacher-related scandals that have impacted the community, and a number of the community's missteps over the past two decades as it transformed from a small gathering of interested individuals to a global movement. Dr. Mark Forman provides psychotherapy in San Jose and online throughout California, as well as developmental consulting for individual adults worldwide. He is the founder and lead trainer of the Certified Integral Psychotherapist (CIT) Global Training Program and actively teaches and supervises both therapists and coaches interested in the direct application of Integral Theory. He is also the organizer of several previous Integral Theory Conferences, and the author of several books on integral psychology. Our guest this week is Greg Thomas. Greg is a writer, teacher, entrepreneur, and CEO of the Jazz Leadership Project, which uses a creative methodology to frame leadership and team development through the lens of jazz. Greg has written about culture, race, and democratic life in publications ranging from the Village Voice, Integral Life, New Republic, Salon, UPTOWN, The Root, the Guardian Observer, and the New York Daily News—as jazz columnist. We discuss jazz and its ability to serve as a foundation for learning leadership and connection, the power and importance of art and storytelling in our culture, race and the idea of transcending race in our society and personal lives, Greg's use of the term “Black American” and the tensions of trying to adopt it without racialization, whether “American” is an ethnicity, how to disentangle culture and ethnicity from race, and more.

"The long-awaited emergence of 'Teal' as a shape of consciousness, set of life conditions, and accompanying techno-economic structure is upon us, and will increasingly emerge with the rise of The Transformation Age. The Integral Philosophy movement inhabits just one small niche of this broader phenomena that inside Integral Life we simply call 'Emergent Teal'. Populated by a diverse set of people and organizations, starting this year Integral Life has begun opening its platform to a broader set of voices, hosts and activities—look out for many exciting announcements coming your way soon—and also begun to engage with some of these talented people, like the one here, an “open class” format which arose from an interaction among Perspectiva's Jonathan Rowson, The PopUp School's Bonnitta Roy, GameB's Jordan Greenhall and myself on Twitter. I was excited to join this conversation because our host, the brilliant Bonnitta Roy, intentionally focused on the personal and concrete among the three guests—all of us fathers—on what it means to be a father, raise children, and take on the responsibility of intergenerational transmission in this time between eras, and whether it holds lessons for being a leader today." —Robb Smith

Watch as Lisa and Corey preview the new season of Integral Life Practice Experiences now available on Integral Life, taking you deeper than ever before into your own growth, awakening, and life purpose. Lisa also discusses her exclusive new program, which she is calling Live Your Deepest Yes, a 12-week live group coaching series that will help you better align yourself with your innermost truth, your passion, and your own unique contribution to the world. What is your Deepest Yes? Deep within, at your very core, there is a voice. This voice is the guiding wisdom that we all have access to. When you clarify and attune to that place inside, you gain access to that voice – learning first how to listen and then speak and act from it. This is the source of right speech, right action and right livelihood. It is the ground from which your purpose, values and ethics arise organically across the various domains of your life. When your heart, body, mind and soul are aligned, you experience a profound sense of rightness all the way down. This is your truth. The truth about who you are, what you want and why you're here. This truth is the very thing that has been guiding your quest for authenticity, purpose and meaning. When you touch this truth, you experience it like a tuning fork sounding from the core of your being that reverberates out to dynamically interact with life. I call this truth your Deepest Yes.
In this episode of the Metamodels series, Bruce and Layman are joined by Ken Wilber, one of the greatest metatheorists of the past century, and a primary inspiration for many of us on this channel. Armed with vision-logic machetes, Bruce and Layman take a trek into the Wilberness to explore the guiding drive or call behind Ken's metatheoretical work for the past 50 years; his thoughts on what he would be working on now if he was just launching his career; his understanding of the difference between sense-making and meaning-making in relation to the meta-crisis; the nature and scope of cognition, and the role of 'relationality' in his AQAL model; how to cultivate communities of integrity, and navigate the culture wars; his perspective on the paranormal and subtle energies; what the Integral community should do to continue thriving in his absence, whenever that day eventually comes; and much more. Ken Wilber, a visionary thinker of inspired genius, is the developer of an integral “theory of everything” that embraces the truths of all the world's great spiritual, scientific, and philosophical traditions. He is the most widely translated academic writer in America, with 25 books translated into some 30 foreign languages. Ken Wilber currently lives in Denver, Colorado, and is still active as a philosopher, author, and teacher, with all of his major publications still in print. Often referred to as the "Einstein of consciousness studies," Ken Wilber is a preeminent scholar of the Integral stage of human development. Ken Wilber is also the founder of the Integral Institute, which is the first organization fully dedicated to advancement and application of the Integral Approach in relation to contemporary global issues. It was formed in collaboration with over 200 scholars and experts, specializing in education, politics, business, medicine, psychology, spirituality, as well as, law and criminal justice. I met Ryan a couple of years ago on Integral Life, a hub for followers of Ken WIlber's Integral theory. At that time of my life I sought out a sangha to help develop and enrich my own integral practice. Ryan welcomed me into a weekly zoom call he was participating in at that time and as the saying goes-the rest is history. Eight months ago Ryan, Jeremy Johnson and I created an integral political podcast named Growing Down. Ryan has described himself as a political animal. In his new project "Perspectivepedia", he reaches out to folks that come from different political perspectives in an attempt to find common beliefs. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0GTEGZCM97STPur-lPKQdw

I remember the days when I thought that changing my mind was a sin; like seriously I carried so much weight around disappointing ‘them'. I carried SO much shame around making a new decision because I was taught I had to finish what I started. But what is the fun in that, am I right? Years later I have learned a couple of things . . . one, if we never changed our mind we would be stuck, like really stuck and not able to give ourSelf the opportunity to evolve into a more expansive, grander version of ourSelves. And two, after learning my Human Design, my energy type and my constitution are quite literally designed to pivot quickly and move in motion and with my life's flow. Remember, life is not stagnant, we are ALWAYS in motion and we are forever learning to ride the waves. How do we begin to ride the waves of conscious change? I want you to remember a time where you were scared to choose something different or change your mind. Maybe that's deciding to go vegetarian, maybe that is leaving a partner or a job, maybe it's moving cities. What if you hadn't made the choice to change your mind, to leave the partner that at one time made you happy or take your health more seriously because your back kept hurting or take the big job opportunity even though it was in a different city, where would you be right now? The same spot sulking in a corner I bet. What if you had never leaned into change? The world has this funny way of making us think that once we decide that is it, we're in it for life, whatever ‘it' is. NO. NO. NO NO NO. This needs to stop. You are not stuck in your current job, your current relationship status, your current situation and here's how we start to believe it . . . My first dirty little secret on changing your mind is the ‘them' we feel like we are disappointing is actually a current version of ourSelf that we are judging based off something we were told we had to do in the past. We are judging ourSelves either consciously or unconsciously based on something someone else has taught us. Some of my inner stories that just weren't true were: Erin, you have to finish everything you start Erin, you can't give-up on something you started Erin, you change your mind too much These stories were given to me by the adults who guided me. Little did they know in Human Design I am a Manifesting Generator which means I am designed to move fast and pivot even faster to make my life more full for me. AND in my human design profile I have a 3 which quite literally means I am here to try and try again and that's how I learn. By adults conditioning me to feel better when I finish something was just SO opposite of me. I was taught I have value when I get the gold star, the certificate, the degree and I bet you I am not the only one out there that has been conditioned just like this. If I had not changed my mind I would have never dropped out of university that was sucking all my life away, I wouldn't have even thought of doing a yoga teacher training and I would have stayed in some seriously crappy relationships. I thank the universe every day for my ability to change MY mind and I have also learned how much power lies in this ability to pivot at any minute, cough cough COVID! I invite you to begin to notice inner dialogue or stories that may not be yours and begin to consciously change your mind if that's what is calling to you! You may be asking, ‘But Erin, how do we know it's what we want?' And my answer, YOU TRY IT OUT! Remember when we were little and we got to try all kinds of sports, crafts and subjects in school, it's kind of like that. We forgot somewhere in the transition from child to adult that we get to try things out, play and see what fits. This looks like giving ourSelves some grace as we go and really leaning into the inner child in us. So maybe you want to take up knitting but try one time and just hate it because you didn't get it right away. When you were learning to ride a bike, did you try one time and then never again, NO. If you were like me, you got on that bike 17 million times that day and didn't get it so started again the next day. I knew I wanted to learn to ride a bike so I did. I didn't care how many times I fell, I didn't care who saw me, I just kept going because I believed in mySelf. This is what we need to bring into changing our mind as adults. As adults we feel we need to get it the first time, well, because we're adults. But what if you try this on, what if you leaned into that childlike wonder when deciding to change your mind. Instead of leaning into all the things that could go wrong, what if you leaned into all that could go right, all the possibilities that come with this new choice. When I was learning to ride a bike all I knew is that I would learn to ride a bike. I knew that if other people could do it, I could do it too and I gave mySelf grace and patience along the way. Let's take after little Erin and give ourSelves some grace as we begin to choose differently. I know I dropped Human Design earlier and that might be a new term for you. Human Design is a system that helps you understand yourSelf on a deeper energetic level and really feel whole as yourSelf. There are 5 energetic archetypes and here's my next little secret, we are ALL designed to change our mind and respond to life as it comes. As we all know, life is always moving and so should we. We can ground in moments and feel rooted in our happiness but it is inevitable that things will come in and out and change. Think about Covid; it created an upheaval for many because they hadn't changed their mind in years. They decided what their life would look like years and years ago and made the decision to stay there without any wiggle room for new possibilities or opportunities. When covid shifted all lives on some major levels, it was/is hard for some people to see another way of life. This global level wave taught us as a collective that one, it is essential to practice non-attachment and two, learning to go with the flow is an integral life skill. To start practicing non-attachment means showing gratitude for all that we have in this moment because at any time it could shift, even when it was not our choice to make the change. Going with the flow is really allowing yourSelf the safe space to change your mind, listen to your body when making decisions NOT your mind. So I ask you, how could you begin to go with the flow today to help give yourSelf permission to change your mind more often. Remember, this doesn't mean every mind change is drastic, this could look like changing your mind to going out with a friend or what you're going to eat for dinner, really anything! We know that life is ever moving and so should we. Some of us will change our mind more often than others and that's okay. Some of us may take longer to feel comfortable in our shift in decision making but I promise you it is worth it. Giving yourSelf permission to change your mind allows room for adventure, huge expansion and magic. Changing your mind is saying yes to the universe and what it has to provide for you. If we continue to say no to what comes our way, we may always feel that, is this it feeling? When we decide to ride our waves in all of their directions, we get to experience life fully and to its true beauty. Way more fun, right? What are some things you've been dying to change your mind on but just couldn't bring yourSelf to . . . TODAY IS THE DAY! In this episode Jeff talks with Corey DeVos of Integral Life about the exhilarating emergence of virtual reality technology and the far-reaching implications it has across the full spectrum of human experience, from entertainment to education, to medicine, art, journalism, spiritual practice, sexuality, communication, and any number of other exciting and potentially groundbreaking applications.
In this episode I talk with Corey deVos of Integral Life, and Episcopal priest Fr. John Forman about the message of Christmas and how we can enjoy a deeper experience of the season. Father John Forman answered the call to priesthood in mid-life, after a career in business (he was a co-creator of the original Integral Institute business seminars) and is now Rector of the Episcopal Church in Burion, Washington. He was drawn to the Episcopal / Anglican lineage for its commitment to, as he puts it, “the protection of the mystery of God”, and his teaching emphasizes direct experience over belief. I love visiting with my old friend Father John and am grateful to join with him as we celebrate the birth of Christ and the perpetual rebirth of love in the world.
The emergence of the internet and social media has been spectacularly fruitful for the evolution of humanity. They connect the world, put all information at our fingertips and provide endless opportunities for self-expression, community and creativity. In recent times, however, we have seen the dark side of technology arise: customized newsfeeds that seal us off from opposing world views, stoking our tribal identities. Data collection systems that compromise our privacy in ways we not may not understand. Sophisticated feedback loops that keep us hooked and threaten our peace of mind. In this episode Jeff talks with David Riordan, Vice President of Media for Integral Life, about some of the ways we can inhabit the virtual world more safely and intelligently.
Inaugurated with bogus crowd claims and tales of voter fraud, the post-truth presidency of Donald Trump is upon us. Trump lives in a Red “warrior” worldspace alive with apparitions, rumors, conspiracies, and above all, scheming enemies. Placed in the context of cultural evolution Trump's view actually represent a pre-truth mentality, typical of the world prior to modernity where warlords and monarchs ruled unconstrained by the divisions of power. This is a world where “might is right”, a world of plunder where the goal not just to defeat the enemy but to take their oil. A world where we don't just build a wall, we make the Mexicans pay for it. (Take heart though; in an actual Red world Trump would not just make them pay for it, he would make them build it, as slaves. So there is that.) Modernity is fighting back against pre-truth thinking with objective facts, evidence and a plea for regular order, but it has been hobbled by the post-truth worldview of postmodernity, where all truth claims are suspect and feelings are privileged over facts. For a brilliant analysis of this phenomenon, check out Ken Wilber's new essay Trump and a Post-Truth World on Integral Life. Also, look for my interview with Ken on the topic which will be posted in the coming days. The Trump presidency begs a crucial question: can a government that has evolved beyond Red consciousness contain a leader who hasn’t? If so, Trump may be the disruptive force we need to break up some calcified habits and thinking. If not … well, there are only 206 weeks left in his first term! In this podcast I look at how integralists can understand and relate to the fight over pre-modern, modern and postmodern conceptions of truth, and how a new integration of the three can help us build a more authentically inclusive world.
In advance of the Return to the Heart of Christ conference, Jeff and David Riordan of Integral Life talk about the questions that arise with an integral inquiry into Jesus's life and teachings. Also, the postmodern view of miracles, and bringing back something we thought we lost.
