New Century Version: Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it. New Living Translation: Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see. Passion Translation: Now faith brings our hopes into reality and becomes the foundation needed to acquire the things we long for. It is all the evidence required to prove what is still unseen. The Voice: Faith is the assurance of things you have hoped for, the absolute conviction that there are realities you've never seen. The Difference between Faith and Hope 1. Faith is present tense a. Now faith is, or you might say it this way faith is NOW! b. Salvation is now, present tense c. Faith believes that it receives now, today, not tomorrow. d. Mark 11:24 faith believes that it receives...now!! e. Mark 5:25-32 Woman w/ issue of blood, your faith has made you well f. Mark 10:46-52 Blind Bart, your faith has made you well g. Mark 2 “5 guys” when He saw their faith...they weren't getting their miracle tomorrow, they were gonna get that thing TODAY! 2. Hope is future tense a. We have the hope of heaven, you're not going there yet, but you will in the future. b. The return of Jesus is a hope that is in our future. It's going to happen, but not now. c. The rapture is a hope that is in our future. It is going to happen, but not now. d. The resurrection of the dead in Christ is a hope that we have, a promise in the Word, but you cannot believe that you receive by faith today...this will happen but it will happen in the future. e. 1 Thes 4:13-18 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Luke 7:9 When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” 10 And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick. ● The centurion didn't need Jesus to come to his house...he knew who Jesus was, His ability, His authority, His will regarding the matter at hand...the centurion needed just the word...or the command. Heb. 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. ● If God demands us to have faith when it is impossible for us to have faith, then we have the right to challenge His justice. ● BUT, if He places within our hands the means faith can be produced, then the responsibility falls on us whether or not we have faith. Rom. 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. ● God has told us it is impossible to be pleasing to Him w/o faith. ● He has also told us how we can get faith. ● If we don't have faith, God is not to blame. Example: Salvation Rom. 10:8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? 1. Faith for salvation comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God 2. Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. 3. Acts 10&11 Conrelius and his house hear the gospel, believe, are saved and filled w/ the Spirit 4. Acts 8 Phillip sent by angel to preach gospel to Etheopian, who hears the word, believes, and calls on the Name of the Lord. Example Healing Acts 14:8-10 And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother's womb, who had never walked. 9 This man heard Paul speaking. Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, 10 said with a loud voice, “Stand up straight on your feet!” And he leaped and walked. 1. We see here that faith for healing comes the same way as faith for salvation. 2. This man was not healed by a gift of the Spirit, or by Paul's faith, or because Paul was an apostle. 3. Paul did 3 things. a. Preached the gospel b. Perceived the man had faith to be healed c. Gave the command to rise up and walk 4. The man did 3 things a. He heard Paul preach the gospel b. He had faith to be healed. You could say it this way he believed the message that Paul was preaching. c. He responded to the Word, being a doer, and rose up and walked.

In this episode: From blue light specials to garage sales, I've enjoyed making the most of living on a budget! Sometimes, life's challenges have hidden fun and joy. There is no second best when we embrace our present circumstances as part of the adventure! (Article contains affiliate links. It wasn't like growing up in the depression, but my parents are boomers who were raised by parents that grew up in the depression. And they knew how to save money. One of my mother's favorite lines was, “We can't afford that.” She was right. But I resented that phrase as a child. To me, she may have just as well said, “We're dirt poor and you're gonna have to learn to like it.” But I didn't like it. I wanted to be able to walk into JC Penney and buy a size 6X Garanimals pink and yellow outfit off the rack like the other little girls did. Then, I didn't know what the X was for, but now that I'm older and I remember my somewhat sturdy body, I suspect it was X for extra generously cut in the seat and the waist. Back then, I didn't care. As long as it said Garanimals in the tag, I wanted it. My mother sewed a lot of my clothing. Now, it's fashionable to sew one's own clothing because fabric costs as much as caviar, but in the 70's and 80's, it meant you were poor. “Mom, can I just have a store bought dress? I'd plead. “We can't afford it.” Little did I know, someday I'd look back at all of the darling things my mother made for me and remember the many hours she spent hunched over a sewing machine and appreciate all of it. But I didn't appreciate it then. I had some store-bought outfits, especially for the first day of school. I loved having a pair of jeans so new that they turned my legs blue before the end of the day. We shopped a lot at K-Mart because they had blue light specials. I think blue light specials were designed to keep housewives fit and children cranky. My brother and I would follow mom around, ducking in and out of clothing racks, listening to Debby Boone sing “You Light Up My Life” on the overhead speakers. My little sister chattered in the shopping cart and suddenly the PA system would click, go silent for a brief moment, then give out a loud whine of feedback before a man would announce, “Attention please. There is a Blue Light special on curtains in aisle six.” Mothers everywhere raced for aisle six. They didn't have to go jogging for exercise if they shopped at K-Mart. If children came with rubber arms, they might be better equipped for following maniac mothers who yanked them by the hand and made off for aisle six. Smaller children lagged behind, dragging tired little feet, slurping sticky lollipops their mothers had bought to keep them quiet. “Mommy! Wait!” They whined. Inevitably, the Blue Light Special in aisle six turned out to be the world's most hideous set of olive green and orange plaid curtains, but the sales associate waiting by the flashing blue light couldn't keep up with the women waiting in line to get their discounted curtains marked with a sticker from his hand-held sticker clicker. Well, that's not what it was called, but I was fascinated with its ability to spit out price tags one after another. Chu-chick. Chu-chick. I read a jaw-dropping article a few weeks ago in the New York Times. It was called, "The Unbearable Heaviness of Clutter." I love that word. Heaviness. Because that is what clutter has always felt like to me. The very SIGHT of crap in my house gives me anxiety. My brain is wired to NEED order on the main floor of my home (we'll talk about the basement storage room later...) Wadded up laundry on the floor makes me agitated. An overflowing trash can? Agitated. Kids' books and papers and jackets and shoes on the floor? Agitated. Everyone in the family KNOWS this about their crazy Momma. They have grown up surrounded by storage bins and custom cabinets because cabinets hide the CRAP that I can't stand to look at. I NEED ORDER. (Now, you may be wondering, is the crap INSIDE the closets and cabinets 'in order?' OH HELL NO, I'm not THAT crazy). When I was little, we had a dark, wet, dank basement filled with...clutter. I remember the car was filled with...clutter. We're not talking "Hoarding" episode-level clutter, but enough clutter that it made me uneasy at a very early age. As an adult, then, I became a compulsive "thrower-OUTER." If my children didn't make it by hand? I toss it. If my grandmother didn't knit that baby blanket? I toss it. If Kris has a shirt with a hole in it? I toss it. Then set it on fire. Then toss it again. I HATE CRAP. It feels GOOD to me to donate, to throw things out. My mother? Oh, dear. She is a beautiful, loving complete opposite of her daughter. She is a supreme gatherer of STUFF. My mother has never met an amazon purchase, QVC line, or Blue-Light Special she didn't fall in love with AND order in triplicate. I cannot count the number of times that beautiful soul will send me something in the mail and say, "Now Dana, don't throw that out!" Once, she sent me a shirt from a Goodwill store in Topeka. I gathered 3 bags of donated stuff and RE-donated it. It ended up BACK in the Goodwill store in Topeka. You can't make it up... which brings me to Diary Entry Number Four. Did you know, according to researchers, clutter can actually cause stress and anxiety? I'm NOT CRAZY!!! THIS IS SCIENCE, PEOPLE!!!!
