If you are 50+, there's a great chance that You Light Up My Life was included on a mix tape you either gave or received! Today, we are speaking with music royalty Debby Boone! She was born into the entertainment world, toured with her father, Pat Boone, and her family, nailed a GRAMMY on her first solo gig, and went on to have a successful singing career in pop, adult contemporary, contemporary Christian, and now swing. Heavy metal is on deck (just kidding). In between that, she has starred on television, in movies, and on Broadway. Her mother-in-law is Rosemary Clooney, and Debby now owns the scores from her that she has used to pay homage to a true superstar with an album, Reflections of Rosemary. She will be in Annapolis on September 21st at the Rams Head On Stage to present it all, along with tales from her life and family, in a special, very intimate show! On a personal note, I have done many of these types of interviews, and Debby was hands down the most gracious guest, by far! And, I may have wrangled a Thanksgiving dinner at the Boone household! The pressure of creating a hit song after the success of "Evergreen" and "You Light Up My Life" was felt in 1978, though the Oscar-nominated songs did not really reach that bar. But not for lack of trying. The musical Grease became the highest-grossing musical of the time, cemented Olivia Newton-John as a movie star and gave her a great love song that was new to the musical and a requirement in her contract. Host Jeff Commings shares more stories about Grease, and the competition for the Oscar that included Donna Summer's first foray into movie songs and Debby Boone's attempt to capture lightning in a bottle two years in a row.

Welcome to Episode #112 of "The Other Side of the Bell", a podcast brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. In this episode, John talks with Wayne Bergeron and Jeff Bunnell about their recently released album called "Homage" by the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble.  We hope you'll enjoy their conversation as well as the album. Join us at Dillon Music, November 9-11 for valve alignments and mouthpiece consultations. Email sales@dillonmusic to schedule an appointment! About the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Album "Homage"  The recording scene in Los Angeles has a long history of great and highly versatile trumpet playing. For the most part, though, these trumpet players rarely get a chance to be featured. In 1957, Tutti Camarata arranged and produced a record called Tutti's Trumpets that featured some of the top session trumpet players in Los Angeles at that time. That was over 60 years ago. Wayne Bergeron and Jeff Bunnell started talking about doing another recording that would feature some of the current session trumpet players here in Los Angeles. Wayne suggested recording a trumpet ensemble CD to Jeff and they loved the idea and thought a choir of trumpets would work well. With that, the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble came into being. In choosing the music Jeff arranged for this CD, he wanted to pay tribute to some of the film composers who are part of the Los Angeles recording scene (and who write so well for the trumpet), and also pay tribute to some of the great trumpet players of the past and present.  Jerry Hey graciously wrote the arrangment for the last track, the iconic Al Jarreau tune "Roof Garden". Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Members Jeff Bunnell Wayne Bergeron Jon Lewis Dan Fornero Marissa Benedict Dan Rosenboom Rob Schaer Larry Hall Dan Savant About Wayne Bergeron Wayne Bergeron is enjoying a career as one of the most sought-after musicians in the world. Studio sessions, film dates, international touring, jazz concerts, guest appearances, and clinics keep him busy not only in his hometown of Los Angeles but worldwide. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1958, Bergeron came to California at age one. He originally started on French horn but switched to trumpet in seventh grade where he found a natural upper register ability. Bergeron credits his junior high and high school teachers, Ron Savitt and Bob Smith, for molding his talent into practical working skills. Bergeron first caught the ear of many when he landed the lead trumpet chair with Maynard Ferguson's band in 1986. Bergeron can be heard on Maynard's recordings of Body and Soul, Big Bop Nouveau, Brass Attitude, and The One and Only Maynard Ferguson.  Bergeron demonstrates daily why Maynard remarked, “Wayne is the most musical lead trumpet player I've had on my band.” As a sideman, Bergeron's list of recording credits reads like a “who's who” in contemporary jazz and pop, running the stylistic gamut from Ray Charles to Green Day. Other names include Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble, Indina Menzel, Leslie Oden Jr., Herb Alpert, The Jonas Brothers, Burt Bacharach, The Dirty Loops, Seth MacFarlane, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Seal, Diana Krall, Tito Puente, Christina Aguilera, Dianne Reeves, Michael Bolton, Earth Wind & Fire, The Pussy Cat Dolls, My Chemical Romance, The Mars Volta, Chicago, Rosemary Cloony, Diane Schuur, Barry Manilow, Lee Ann Womack, Lou Rawls, Eric Marienthal, Kenny G., and David Benoit. Bergeron has worked on over 500 TV & motion picture soundtracks. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Debby Boone, Renowned Singer, Actress and Author About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Debby Boone, is an immensely popular singer, actress and author who became an immediate global superstar in 1977 with her mega-hit song, “You Light Up My Life”.   The song became one of the greatest multi-platinum singles in pop music history, spending an unprecedented 10 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts, and selling over 4 million albums. She received a Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and since then, she's received another 7 Grammy nominations, and winning 2 more – in 1980, for Best Inspirational Performance, and 1983, for Best Gospel Performance.    She's also won a slew of other awards, including Top New Female Vocalist at the Academy of Country Music Awards, 2 Dove Awards for Best Album, a Music City News Award for Best New Female Artist, and 7 Record World Awards.  She's recorded 13 albums, including “You Light Up My Life”, “Love Has No Reason”, “With My Song”, “Savin' it Up”, “Surrender”, “Friends for Life”, “Home for Christmas” and my 2 personal favourites,  “Reflections of Rosemary”, which is a beautiful tribute to her late mother-in-law, the legendary Rosemary Clooney – and her latest album, “Swing This”, which has solidified her reputation as one of the best vocal interpreters of the Great American Songbook.    Our guest has appeared in dozens of TV shows and starred in 2 of her own TV specials - AND she co-starred in one of the most popular TV movies of the 80s, “Sins of the Past”, co-starring Kirstie Alley, Kim Cattrall  and Anthony Geary.    On the stage, she starred on Broadway in “Grease”, as everybody's favourite “bad girl”, Rizzo.  And in 1990, she starred in the highly acclaimed revival of “The Sound of Music” at Lincoln Center, which earned a Drama Desk Award nomination.  She's starred in hugely successful national touring productions of “7 Brides for 7 Brothers” and “The Sound of Music” - which I had the great pleasure of seeing here in Toronto in 1987.   She's had starring roles in many regional theatre productions including “Meet Me in St. Louis”, “South Pacific”, “The King and I”, “42nd Street”, “Into the Woods”, and many more great shows.   And if that weren't enough, she's also written six bestselling children's books, illustrated by her dear husband Gabriel Ferrer.   For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ http://debbyboone.com/https://www.facebook.com/debbyboone/https://twitter.com/debbyboonemediahttps://www.instagram.com/debbyboonemedia/https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UkHCANZmdkKyVNvTLMrcJ #debbyboone   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

The 1937 Flood Watch Podcast

Our story begins with the star of a new show who is unhappy with the song her upstart writers have given her to perform. In a panicky phone call, she persuades a more established composer to come up with something she thinks will be more worthy of her talents. The show, in fact, turns out to be a dog — vaudeville's “Betsy” has only 39 performances between December 1926 and January 1927 — but oh, that song! Irving Berlin's “Blue Skies” was an instant hit with the audience on the “Betsy” opening night. The song literally stopped the show. Twenty-four encores! During her final repetition, star Belle Baker actually forgot the lyrics, prompting a bit of Broadway lore when Berlin himself sang the words for her from his front-row seat. And Those Disdained Upstarts? As it happened, Berlin had written the new “Blue Skies” a few weeks earlier as a Christmas gift for his newborn daughter, Mary Ellin.Berlin agreed to let the composition be a last-minute addition to the show, even though he usually resented the interpolation of songs by other composers into the score of his shows, say biographers Philip Furia and Michael Lasser.“But,” the writers add, “he must have been delighted at the chance to work one of his songs into a score by the young songwriting team who were already being compared to Gilbert and Sullivan,” namely, a couple of newcomers named, ahem, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. Big Time on the Big ScreenIf its reputation relied only on that failed 1927 Ziegfield musical, we probably wouldn't know “Blue Skies” nowadays. But the song's real fame came later that same year with “The Jazz Singer,” the first full-length motion picture to have sound; it starred Al Jolson singing nine songs, one of which was the brand new “Blue Skies.” And that was just the beginning of the song's celluloid celebrity. It later was featured in “Alexander's Ragtime Band” (1938), a biopic inspired by Irving Berlin, and the 1946 film “Blue Skies” starring Bing Crosby, then in the 1954 “White Christmas” with Crosby singing it with Danny Kaye. And of course, the song has jazz cred too. Ella Fitzgerald scatted a version for her eight-album “Song Book” series. Count Basie and Benny Goodman's recordings hit #8 and #9 respectively on the pop charts. The song has contributed to the country and western songbook too. It was a standard by 1939 when Moon Mullican recorded it. Willie Nelson's 1978 release was a #1 country music hit. The Star Trek ConnectionThe song even has gotten air time in outer space. It was featured prominently in the 2002 film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” as sung by Commander Data (Brent Spiner) during a wedding scene at the start of the story. It is sung again at the very end of the film by Data's "brother," the android B-4, during the final scene set in the 24th century, a time period not revisited by the Trek franchise for another 18 years, with the release of “Star Trek: Picard” in 2020. "Blue Skies" is featured in that series' premiere episode and again in the 10th episode.New Generations “Blue Skies” has clicked with generations of performers and audiences, from Freddy Cannon, Della Reese, Jim Reeves and Bobby Darin in the 1960s to Lyle Lovett, Dr. John and Eva Cassidy in the 1990s to Debby Boone and Rod Stewart in the 2000s.We'll Bring “Blue Skies” to Sal's TonightThe song will be on tap when the Family Flood returns to Sal's Italian Eatery & Speakeasy in Ashland, Ky., tonight. We're excited to be there, and, best of all, The Chick Singer is back! Yes, Floodster Emerita Michelle Hoge (whom the late Joe Dobbs christened "da chick singer" years ago) is coming in from Cincinnati just to sit in with her old band mates for the evening. It's going to be epic! We'll be playing from 6 to 9 p.m.By the way, if you've not yet had The Sal's Experience, this would be a great chance to enjoy this remarkable venue in downtown Ashland. In this part 1 of a 2-part conversation with Di Patterson. Host Scott says “You will love Di (America's Gerontologist)” as she shares her views on the importance of relationships as we age. Many people who have experienced 40 know that 40 is a pivotal age. Things seem to begin to “go south”, although these changes began much earlier. Men begin a strength decline at age 18, and women's need for bone calcium begins at age 10. And everyone's kidneys performed at their peak at age 5. Humbling, isn't it? It is within this context we discuss the importance of relationships. Listen as Di teaches how LOVE is the key to aging well.Di Patterson, MSG, CPG is a Credentialed Professional Media Gerontologist, and founder at Success in Aging Center®, Inc. and Season of Life® Conference, Inc. " You Light Up My life" was the biggest song of 1977, the biggest song of the decade of the 70s and set a record  as the number one song on Billboard's Top 40 for 10 weeks in a row.  But there was some behind the scenes drama with the recording of that song.  She'll tells that story and much more.  The Boone Family, like the Jacksons and the Osmonds made music together under the leadership of their dad; Pat Boone.  That, plus a three generation legacy of music was the backdrop for Debby's career.  Jesus was, and still is a big part of her story and you'll hear it all in this episode of Amazing Greats.  Joe Micheals this weeks guest host is a long time friend.    We worked in radio together as teen agers and on into adulthood.  He is a master voice talent, radio personality, and life long Catholic.   He takes us on this Debby Boone journey in a very special one on one conversation for Amazing Greats.  Enjoy!

Part II of my conversation with Dena Tauriello and Rosa Avila. We explore more reasons why they were the only two women drummers working on Broadway and off-broadway prior to the shutdown of all shows in 2020. Some of the topics we discuss include:Should broadway have half of the drum chairs be filled by women? If so, why? Is total equality the goal? Are they just not interested, or are there more nefarious reasons for the lack of women playing drums? Is the lack of women drummers working professionally primarily because of sexism and discrimination, or are there other factors?Finding women subs—what problems have they had with recruitment and/or finding qualified candidates? Are women reaching out to them for advice on how to do what they do?What can we do to bring more women into the collective of drummers? Dena Tauriello began playing drums at the age of eight. For 20 years, she worked with NYC rockers Antigone Rising who toured relentlessly, made numerous TV appearances, and served as cultural ambassadors to Israel, Palestine, and Vietnam. She's worked with Rob Thomas (from Matchbox 20) as a member of his “RT Quartet.”She has been featured in Modern Drummer, Drum! and Sticks ‘n' Skins, a photography book about the drumming community. Just over two years ago, Dena made the switch to Broadway after landing the chair for Head Over Heels featuring the music of the Go-Gos. Today's podcast takes up the underlying reasons why there are so few women drummers working on Broadway musicals. I spoke to two amazing drummers, Dena Tauriello and Rosa Avila, to find out why they were the only two women drummers working on Broadway and off-broadway prior to the shutdown of all shows last year. Some of the topics we discuss include:Their thoughts as to why there weren't many female drummers during their formative years.Did they have women drum teachers, and if not, why was that the case?Should broadway have half of the drum chairs be filled by women? If so, why? Is total equality the goal? What about other groups of people? Should there be a proportional representation of other groups? (black, Asian, Latino, gay/lesbian, etc.) Is the lack of women drummers working professionally primarily because of sexism and discrimination, or are there other factors? What are some of the blatant sexist encounters they've experienced over the years and how were they affected?Dena Tauriello began playing drums at the age of eight. You'll be "glad that you were born" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 1982's Seven Brides For Seven Brothers on episode three of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS Based on the beloved 1954 MGM musical film of the same name, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers tells the story of backwoodsman Adam Pontipee and his six brothers and their quest to find wives in 1850s Oregon. The musical features a book by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay, music by Gene de Paul, Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn, and lyrics by Johnny Mercer, Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn. It is an adaption of the short story "The Sobbin' Women," by Stephen Vincent Benét, which is, in turn, based on the Ancient Roman legend of The Rape of the Sabine Women. The show's 1978-79 premiere tour, featuring Howard Keel and Jane Powell reprising their roles from the original film, closed before reaching Broadway. A second touring production was launched in 1981, this time starring pop star Debby Boone, and traveled for eighteen months before finally opening on Broadway in July 1982, only to close three days and five performances later. A subsequent West End production had a six-week limited engagement run in 1985, with a further five and a half week run at The Prince of Wales Theatre. Revised versions of the musical have met with success in U.S. regional theaters and in amateur productions on both sides of the Atlantic.   Original Broadway Cast Debby Boone as Milly David-James Carroll as Adam Jeanne Bates as Mrs. Bixby Jeff Calhoun as Daniel Cheryl Crandall as Townsperson Fred Curt as Mr. Bixby D. It wasn't like growing up in the depression, but my parents are boomers who were raised by parents that grew up in the depression. And they knew how to save money. One of my mother's favorite lines was, “We can't afford that.” She was right. But I resented that phrase as a child. To me, she may have just as well said, “We're dirt poor and you're gonna have to learn to like it.” But I didn't like it. I wanted to be able to walk into JC Penney and buy a size 6X Garanimals pink and yellow outfit off the rack like the other little girls did. Then, I didn't know what the X was for, but now that I'm older and I remember my somewhat sturdy body, I suspect it was X for extra generously cut in the seat and the waist. Back then, I didn't care. As long as it said Garanimals in the tag, I wanted it. My mother sewed a lot of my clothing. Now, it's fashionable to sew one's own clothing because fabric costs as much as caviar, but in the 70's and 80's, it meant you were poor. “Mom, can I just have a store bought dress? I'd plead. “We can't afford it.” Little did I know, someday I'd look back at all of the darling things my mother made for me and remember the many hours she spent hunched over a sewing machine and appreciate all of it. But I didn't appreciate it then. I had some store-bought outfits, especially for the first day of school. I loved having a pair of jeans so new that they turned my legs blue before the end of the day. We shopped a lot at K-Mart because they had blue light specials. I think blue light specials were designed to keep housewives fit and children cranky. My brother and I would follow mom around, ducking in and out of clothing racks, listening to Debby Boone sing “You Light Up My Life” on the overhead speakers. My little sister chattered in the shopping cart and suddenly the PA system would click, go silent for a brief moment, then give out a loud whine of feedback before a man would announce, “Attention please. There is a Blue Light special on curtains in aisle six.” Mothers everywhere raced for aisle six. They didn't have to go jogging for exercise if they shopped at K-Mart. If children came with rubber arms, they might be better equipped for following maniac mothers who yanked them by the hand and made off for aisle six. Smaller children lagged behind, dragging tired little feet, slurping sticky lollipops their mothers had bought to keep them quiet. “Mommy! Wait!” They whined. Inevitably, the Blue Light Special in aisle six turned out to be the world's most hideous set of olive green and orange plaid curtains, but the sales associate waiting by the flashing blue light couldn't keep up with the women waiting in line to get their discounted curtains marked with a sticker from his hand-held sticker clicker. Well, that's not what it was called, but I was fascinated with its ability to spit out price tags one after another. Chu-chick. Chu-chick. Crackpot Cinema: Ep #23—“Pat Healy IS The Maniac Robert Mitchum!” Actor, film fanatic, and profoundly committed “Robert Mitchum completist” PAT HEALY (CHEAP THRILLS, THE INNKEEPERS, COMPLIANCE) joins Mike and Aaron to take on two of Mitch’s most challenging projects—and they’re “challenging” in terms of any human being actually having to endure them. We did and we’re here to tell you all about it. First up is the boxing kangaroo mega-bomb MATILDA (1978) starring Elliot Gould, Art Metrano, Mitch as a sportswriter, and, in the title role, some simp in a genuinely jarring, hunk-of-dung marsupial suit. Then it’s BACKFIRE! (1995), an inexplicable straight-to-VHS parody of Ron Howard’s 1991 non-classic, BACKDRAFT. This time, Mitch plays Fire Marshal Marshall opposite Telly Savalas, Shelley Winters, Kathy Ireland, Mary McCormack, and Edie Falco as “Mom.” Jawboning highlights include: Pat Healy dulcetly recites Matilda-penned poetry; Pat and Debby Boone put a milk-fed spin on “Lemon Incest;” Edd Kookie B. invokes his guru Troy D.; BACKFIRE star Josh Mosby dangles his white-chocolate deliciousness; and the Carol Connors who’s NOT Thora Birch’s porn star mom may actually be cooler than the Carol Connors who IS Thora Birch’s porn star mom (again: MAY be).

John and Alan sit down with Burleigh Drummond and Mary Harris-Drummond from Ambrosia for an hour of stories. What kind of stories? Stories about how Bruce Hornsby first got his start in Ambrosia, Debby Boone, Ringo Starr, Michael McDonald, Edger Winter, Jimmy Buffett, and a bunch of other people all played a part in Burliegh and Mary's lives. Hear about how the soft pop stars Ambrosia killed time on the road by using explosives to launch trash cans in the air. Burleigh laments on having to practice in front of the greatest drummers in the world and Mary tells us about Sting and Stewart Copeland trying to push each other out of an airplane in flight. Burleigh and Mary talk about what it's like to have a second generation of Drummonds playing music together, and Burleigh finally clears the air on why Dave Pack isn't with the band. Most of all it's a delightfully fun trip through 5 decades of music, and some great stories told by a couple who's marriage has survived the same amount of time.Tin Drum Music - www.tindrummusic.comAmbrosia Official Website - www.ambrosialive.net

The warning signs were clearly visible in prior defenses of his heavyweight championship. Jimmy Young and Ken Norton could easily have been given decisions against Ali in 1976. A European-level fighter like Alfredo Evangelista could last the distance in May 1977. And power-puncher Earnie Shavers, despite falling short on points, had inflicted 10 fights worth of damage on “The Greatest” over 15 brain-shuddering rounds that September. Ali, who should have been enjoying retirement, needed a very easy fight – enter Leon Spinks. The St. Louis product was a decorated amateur star. He had captured bronze at the World Championships in 1974, silver at the Pan-Am Games in 1975 and gold, as a light heavyweight, at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. Great stats, but, alarmingly, the challenger was bringing a (6-0-1, 5 knockouts) professional record into a heavyweight championship fight. Rick James The Superfreak (@ 30 yrs old): singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, hitmaker, performer, producer, impresario, and pioneer in the fusion of funk groove and rock.  A flamboyant, provocative, charismatic, brilliant, volatile, and outrageous bona fide superstar.    121.    Why is he being featured: Debut solo album, Come Get It!, with hit singles "You and I" & "Mary Jane"   122.    Short Story:  Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, he was one of eight children. His father was abusive and abandoned the family when James was eight. His mother was a former dancer who worked as a housekeeper, but also was a numbers runner. Went to Catholic school and was an altar boy, he also committed petty theft crimes, and spent some time in juvenile detention centers. He also began doing drugs. While James was always musically inclined, it was not until he performed in a talent show in high school that he seriously considered a career in music. He formed a group called the Duprees. At the same time, he joined the Naval Reserve to avoid the draft. As he and his group gained popularity he began to skip out on his naval duties. James was soon drafted, but he fled to Canada.  His uncle was Melvin Franklin of the Temptations. Franklin helped his nephew get a recording contract with Motown Records. This led to James striking a deal with the government and serving some time in prison for draft evasion. After his release, he began to record his first album, which included the hits "You & I," and his ode to marijuana, "Mary Jane." The album sold two million copies.   123.    James's second album, Bustin' Out of L Seven(1979), followed the previous album's success, eventually selling a million copies.   124.    His third album, Fire It Up (1979) and the supporting tour led to James developing a bitter rivalry with one of his opening acts, Prince. Rick accused Prince of ripping off his act.   125.    His fifth album, Street Songs (1981), also proved to be a crossover success. With the Temptations on background vocals, James released "Super Freak."    126.    With the success of "Super Freak," James began to produce for other artists. He formed an all-girl band named the Mary Jane Girls. He also performed duets with R&B singer Teena Marie and Smokey Robinson. He also produced comedian Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time," which was a hit in the mid-1980s.   127.    James' on-stage persona was one of wild debauchery. Dressed in sequins, tight leather, high-heeled boots, and cornrows or a jheri curl, James oozed sex on stage. Offstage, he smoked marijuana and snorted cocaine. According to the Washington Post, he told the Detroit News in 2004, "The biggest mistake I made is that I tried to become my alter ego. I wanted to be Rick James, wild man, party machine, lady slayer, and the cocaine told me I could. I forgot that I was James Johnson, a nerdy kid who grew up reading Dante's Inferno on Saturday nights."   128.    James' spiral out of control came to a head when he was charged with assault in 1991. He was convicted in 1993 and served three years. He vowed to get clean and live a more sedate life. Upon his release, he married and began having serious health problems.  James was found dead on August 6, 2004; he was 56.  His death was ruled accidental, but nine drugs were found in his system. However, the official cause of death was a heart attack.   129.    Open Comments:   130.    Movie Scene   131.    The Wiz: A musical adventure fantasy film based upon characters from “The Wizard of OZ” featuring an all-black cast, the film was loosely adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same name. It follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy, twenty-four-year-old Harlem schoolteacher who finds herself magically transported to the urban fantasy Land of Oz, which resembles a dream version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion, she travels through the city to seek an audience with the mysterious Wiz, who they say is the only one powerful enough to send her home.   132.    Various reviews: "...Diana Ross, too old to play Dorothy." and ...portrayal of Dorothy was "cold, neurotic and oddly unattractive" / "...cockamamy screenplay" / “the picture finished off Diana Ross's screen career" / "The Wiz was too scary for children, and too silly for adults." / Ray Bolger, who played the Scarecrow in the 1939 The Wizard of Oz film, did not think highly of The Wiz, stating "The Wiz is overblown and will never have the universal appeal that the classic MGM musical has obtained."   133.    Sean Munger - seanmunger.com "...But, despite the fact that it was a bad movie–and it clearly is–there’s a lot of very interesting stuff about The Wiz lurking under the surface. You can make an argument that its failure ended not one but two eras in cinema: the era of the glitzy big-budget musical, and that of what is known, not entirely politically correctly (these days), as the “Blacksploitation” boom. The Wiz also began a professional association between two of its participants that had an effect on popular culture of almost inestimable magnitude: the musical pairing of Michael Jackson and songwriter/producer Quincy Jones."   134.    Open Comments:   135.    TV Scene   136.    Maxie Cleveland "Max" Robinson, Jr. (@39yrs old): American broadcast journalist and founder of the National Association of Black Journalists   137.    Robinson’s first journalism job began and ended in 1959, when he was hired to read news at a Portsmouth, Va., television station. Although the station selected him over an otherwise all-white group of applicants, it still enforced a color barrier by projecting an image of the station’s logo to conceal Robinson as he read the news. He was fired the day after he presented the news without the logo obscuring his face. In 1965 he joined WTOP-TV in Washington, D.C., as a correspondent and camera operator, but he moved quickly to nearby WRC-TV, where he won awards for coverage of race riots and a documentary on life in poor urban neighborhoods. He was hired back by WTOP as its first African American news anchor in 1969 and stayed there until 1978. Robinson moved to Chicago when ABC News chose him as one of three co-anchors for ABC’s World News Tonight. The anchor arrangement ended with the death of co-anchor Frank Reynolds in 1983. Robinson left ABC News shortly thereafter and joined Chicago’s WMAQ-TV as a news anchor (1984–87).   138.    Clarence Page offered a final tribute to his friend Max Robinson in Chicago: "Some journalists are remembered for the stories they covered. Robinson will be remembered for being the story. Like Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball's color bar in 1947, Max Robinson won't be applauded for his home runs, but for the fact that he ran the bases."   139.    Open Comments:   140.    Final Question: Biggest legacy from 1978?

Quick! Name the biggest song of the 1970s. Well, you're wrong! It turns out the biggest song that decade was a love ballad from an unpopular movie sung by the daughter of an ultra-conservative country singer. But that's really just scratching the surface on this bizarrely massive number one hit.

While the overwhelming success of the song overshadows other aspects of Boone’s career, the eternally optimistic singer has had a varied and successful career in multiple musical genres. In a new interview with journalist Robert Neil, Boone talks about the unusual circumstances that created the opportunity to record “You Light Up My Life,” and the odd path that followed. In her typically good-natured way, Boone jokes about how ‘green’ she was at that time and how her desire to sing in a variety of styles ultimately left her with a ‘branding’ problem. She also talks about members of her famous family, and the conversation goes well beyond her legendary father Pat Boone. Debby is also related to two other iconic and hugely important musical performers:  country singer Red Foley and singer/actress Rosemary Clooney.  Foley, considered one of the most important figures in the history of country music, was Boone’s maternal grandfather, and Clooney, who recorded some of the most popular pop songs of the early 1950s, was Boone’s mother-in-law. In a free-flowing, casual interview, Boone talks about her famous relations, and Neil also speaks with John Rumble, senior historian at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, who offers some insights into Foley’s career.

I live with a super social twelve-year-old.  Our home is conveniently located within biking and walking distance to a vast majority of her friends.  Therefore, I interact with dozens, seemingly hundreds, of middle-schoolers on the reg.  That means “regularly.”  Not only do I hear, and apparently absorb (…totes…) their language, but I also hear, and often abhor, their music.  At times, I’m tempted to let something much like this slip from my mouth, “Music is horrible today.” Guess what, though? It’s not true. What I’d really be saying is, “When I was a kid…our shitty pop music was less shitty than this generation’s shitty pop music.”  But see, shitty pop music is shitty pop music is shitty pop music.  And also, all art is relative, and personal, and wrought with nostalgic, emotional overlay. I realized this as Jen played, “Hit the Quan” for me.  If you stream the podcast just below this post, you can hear both the song and the insights. For those of you who’ll just read, and to assure myself that, indeed, every decade’s shitty pop…let’s call it Poop Music, is merely soon-to-be-dated Poop, I did some research.  I use the term “research” quite loosely.  What I really did was look at the “List of Billboard Top 100 chart achievements by decade” on Wikipedia, within which I found the top songs of each decade back to 1958.  That’s right, 1958.  People, Wikipedia is absolutely wonderful for many things.  Not serious academic research, and not as a solitary source.  Don’t dismiss it out of hand just because it’s crowd-sourced.  While it only takes one dick to ruin something, the crowd generally trumps the dick.  However, also realize that the community created a 1958 – 1969 “decade” because, I dunno, the dick won there. So, for any of you who’ve claimed, in your best crotchety old-man/old-woman demeanor, “Music ain’t like it used to be,” feast your eyes on these lists.  (And hell, link through to the videos to feast your ears as well!)  Keep in mind, there are absolute gems of pop perfection in each decade…and there are heaping mounds of steaming shit as well.  All the way back to the decade that began in, uh…1958.  I won’t try to convince you which songs here are genius, which are formulaic, which are immediately forgetful, unforgettable, and which are vomit-worthy.  I only ask you to keep track of your reactions as you travel back…and be completely honest with yourself. Because a turd by any other name would smell as putrid. Well, it was real treat this month to have my best friend Gay Franks join me in making this podcasty. She is just one of those long time friends that I can't get rid of. Oh, and my nephew Tim drops by with some things I asked him to pick me up at the store as well while we were recording. My house is the hub of social activity for my neighborhood! I think you will be very impressed with how I demonstrate my knowledge in helping my dear Gay work through some nasty feelings. Remember emotion is about MOTION! I think someone famous said that- but you are welcome to give me credit. Now remember dear I AM HEAR FOR YOU, and would would love to assist you in any way possible, so drop me a note and I'll be happy to give you some advice to lighten up your life. Do you remember that song by Debby Boone? "You Lighten Up My Life?" That was a lovely song wasn't it? You know she wasn't singing to a boyfriend, she was singing to God and that's why it is so lovely. Listen to this and it will make your day better.
