In this episode of The DooDoo Diva's Smells Like Money Podcast, host Suzan Chin-Taylor welcomes Bob Sweeney, President of Environmental Management Systems, to explore the ins and outs of onsite wastewater treatment systems. With 46 years of experience in environmental protection and wastewater management, Bob shares invaluable insights into the full lifecycle of septic systems, covering everything from design and permitting to essential maintenance and potential replacement. He explains how regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent costly repairs, and highlights how advanced treatment technologies—like drip irrigation and aerobic treatment units—are allowing more flexible installations on challenging sites, including small lots and sloped terrains. As they dive into the environmental impact of onsite systems, Bob explains how these systems reduce stress on watersheds, protect groundwater, and minimize the need for extensive piping to centralized treatment facilities. He also reveals how treated effluent can benefit landscapes, adding another layer of sustainability to these systems. Bob discusses his company's collaboration with installers to ensure septic system designs are practical, cost-effective, and built to last, stressing the importance of involving experts early in the process for a successful, efficient project. With around 25% of the U.S. population relying on septic systems, this episode sheds light on how sustainable, onsite wastewater management is growing in adoption. As the conversation wraps up, listeners are encouraged to look at onsite wastewater treatment as a proactive, environmentally friendly solution that can enhance communities while protecting our resources. Bob's vision for wastewater recycling and his wealth of knowledge make this episode a must-listen for homeowners, contractors, and environmental advocates alike! I spoke to Jamie of Jamie and the Guarded Heart about his music career and goals as an original artist. Jamie has been in the cover band circuit for many years and shares his insights with being a professional musician. Check out his bio and learn more on Dreams Not Memes. Bio Bonded by tomato pie and storytelling, Jamie Salvatore and Morgan Russo lead the Guarded Heart as they prepare the followup to 2020's “Nikki Used to Play the Drums”. Chosen as the Band of the Month by world renowned WMMR here in Philadelphia, the song propelled the band into the club scene and led to live appearances for iHeart Philly's 104.5 with Jammin' Jesse on Live@5, and support from WXPN as well. The first song from the forthcoming record is “I Don't Love You” and was released in September via digital outlets and the band's bandcamp site. The accompanying video, shot outside of Philadelphia and directed by Bob Sweeney, features the band hanging around their hometown as well as performance shots from their home base, The Lannutti Post. “The recording process was the most "us" we've ever felt in the studio. We really had the support and freedom to channel our influences into an authentic representation of who we are.” remarked Jamie about the time making the record and the video. Drawing on their Conshohocken roots and influences, Jamie and Morgan decided to "leave it all on the field" while making this new record, just as they had when they formed the band. After a decade of playing cover music 200 nights a year in bars, Jamie was ready to quit. He was burned out, uninspired and lost. That's when his partner Morgan hatched a scheme. "Why don't you start a project where you just play your songs and you really give it a go? Something real, something you believe in." she asked. "I'll do it, but only if you do it with me." he replied. Jamie and Morgan formed Jamie and the Guarded Heart, a name that comes from a play on their personalities, the always out in front Salvatore and the more quiet and carry a big stick, Russo. They were raised outside of Philly by working class parents on The Stones, Tom Petty and the radio. And they grew up dreaming of playing sweaty packed clubs to music fans like them. With every every show, with every song, they've watched their crowds grow. Now, they're ready to hit the highway and continue to make their dream real. Their new record "Funeral Song" is about that. The dream chasing, the lost nights, the hopelessness, the dead end jobs, the ghost of people gone from your life and the undying pursuit of the thing you love most. If you want it, it's there, and if you need someone to show you how to get it, it's Jamie and the Guarded Heart. We had a great time talking to Bruins great Bob Sweeney! For those who don't know, Sweeney was born in Concord, MA, and as a youth, he played in the 1976 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Assabet Valley. He was drafted out of high school by the Boston Bruins in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, and went on to play four years at Boston College. He made his NHL debut in the 1986–87 season, but spent most of the year with the Bruins AHL affiliate the Moncton Golden Flames. The 1987–88 season was Sweeney's first full year, a season where Boston traveled to the Stanley Cup Finals. Following six seasons with Boston, Sweeney was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Sabres in 1992 and then by the New York Islanders in 1995. After being traded to the Calgary Flames during the 1995–96 season Sweeney retired from the NHL. He spent the next season in the IHL before traveling across the Atlantic to play in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga from 1997 until 2001. He is currently the Executive Director of the Boston Bruins Foundation.

Those of us who are blessed to live in homes with a roof, heat/air and indoor plumbing plus have a stocked refrigerator, probably cannot even imagine what it would be like to be homeless…the extreme discomfort, shame and obvious health challenges of living on a park bench or under a bridge and begging for scraps of food. It is a widely believed that the answer is to give the homeless a house, but that is a MYTH. As it turns out, the situation is much like what we discuss weekly on the show regarding health—it is wiser to solve the basic issue that caused the problem so that it does not become a repeating pattern. If you are like me and sincerely want to help homeless folks (especially the veterans) you might also worry that giving money to panhandlers may just support an addiction. Sophie Greenberg of Riverby is a singer-songwriter originally from South Jersey now living in Philadelphia. In addition to their work on the project Riverby, Sophie also sings a little bit with The Tisburys and just started a brand new project with Celia Tice called Pigeon Culture. During our interview, Sophie talks about the process of making the latest EP, The Guide to Oversharing and recording the songs with The Tisburys. We talked about how Sophie got started in music and developed their skills, the inspiration behind the ep title and some of the songs, which include Belle and Sebastian, Death Cab for Cutie, and Best Coast... Sophie shared opinions about some of the saddest songs and their appeal, why Heaven Hill is their chosen bourbon and why it was included in the lyrics of an untitled/unrecorded song that Riverby plays live. We debated whether we would rather go to battle against a horse-sized duck or 100 duck sized horses. Sophie also talked about self-esteem, getting psyched up to leave the house, the video they made with Bob Sweeney for "The Truth" which just came out in August, and upcoming shows happening this Fall.

We decided to curb stomp the 1998 Edward Norton vehicle "American History X" that showed us all neo-Nazis have to do to overcome their vicious deep-seated racism is have one jokey conversation with a funny black guy in prison. This movie has it all: a "Psycho"-esque black-and-white bloody slow-motion shower scene, a hilariously unrealistic reverse slam dunk by Edward Norton, a giant swastika tattoos, a cheesy villains, a few funny wigs, and even a little kid dressed up as Adolf Hitler. Edward Norton stars as Derek Vinyard, a leader of a white supremacist gang called the Disciples of Christ, who kills a couple dudes who try to rob his car (one by curb stomping). He then serves three years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, changes his beliefs and tries to prevent his brother from going down the same path. He goes from wearing a backward hat over his mullet (like Poochie from "The Simpsons") when innocent to a shaved-head neo-Nazi with a giant swastika tattooed on his chest two seconds later. Edward Furlong plays Norton's younger brother who recalls the story and writes it in a paper for school and annoyingly narrates throughout the film. Beverly D'Angelo (of the "Vacation" movies fame) plays their chain-smoking mom who can't catch a break after her racist firefighter husband dies. Avery Brooks (Benjamin Sisko from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine") plays Dr. Bob Sweeney, a high school principal who also seems to run the police department and the prison system. And we also have Ethan Suplee, Fairuza Balk, Elliott Gould, Stacy Keach, and the nice-guy dad from "Boy Meets World" as an N-word spewing fireman dad. We wonder who would be funny at reading the "Mein Kampf" audiobook, how hard Beverly D'Angelo is trying to win an Oscar in this, and how the paper Edward Furlong's character writes throughout is an F paper. The Lineup is a realistic police drama that gives radio audiences a look behind the scenes at police headquarters. Bill Johnstone plays Lt. Ben Guthrie, a quiet, calm-as-a-cupcake cucumber. Joseph Kearns (and from 1951 to 1953, Matt Maher) plays Sgt. Matt Grebb, a hot-tempered hot plate who is easily bored. The director and script writer often rode with police on the job and sat in on the police lineups to get ideas for The Lineup.
