Slow Productivity by Cal Newport - Book Summary
Send us a textWe interviewed Penn Cole, we took a deep dive into Spark and Glow of the Everflame, and today we're continuing on with our deep dive into book 3: Heat of the Everflame. With the first fifteen minutes being spoiler free, and including our basic star and spice ratings! Check out our full Kindred's Curse Saga Playlist | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=103nCXINMP4&list=PLHf5v0KOoZMmK0bBoRxZWmqNtG88fxs4v&pp=gAQBAt this point, we're taking the time needed to deep dive some conspiracy theories and speculate as to how this series may end. Honestly, we can't even imagine how Penn Cole is going to tie up all these loose ends, especially with Heat ending in the epic way it did… on a cliffhanger like no other. Diem continues to break away from more common fantasy conventions and tropes by embodying feminist themes focused on ruling with non-violence, even when presented with immense power. We discuss why this is important, and why having an MMC like Luther who continues to support her, but must now make some impossible choices may challenge some of the more alternative themes we've grown to appreciate from this series. We break down our favorite and least favorite parts, tropes, and characters, share reviews, and discuss whether or not we're looking forward to reading the final book. And dive into the web of secrets that we feel like we (and Diem) are just now beginning to unravel. As usual, we have some extra treats, starting out with a Labubu and bruised pinky themed fave and fail and a smash or pass fantasy daddy / bad boy fish edition.Don't be shy, subscribe! Get Better at Anything by Scott H. Young - Book Summary
Show notes (Why We Sleep book summary) / Free Full Audiobook / PDF & Infographic / IN THIS EPISODE: Sleep is a complex, essential biological process that significantly impacts physical health, mental function, and emotional regulation, and understanding and prioritizing it can dramatically improve overall human well-being. Read 1 million books in minutes. For free. Visit getstoryshots.com to get started. TOPICS: sleep, Circadian rhythm, health, Dreams, mental health, Neuroscience KEY FIGURES: Pixar, National Institutes of Health, NBA, Atomic Habits, World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Harvard Medical School, Why We Sleep, NFL, Matthew Walker, UC Berkeley, Deep Work, Einstein, StoryShots SUMMARY: Matthew Walker's book 'Why We Sleep' reveals a critical insight into the profound importance of sleep for human health, highlighting that most adults in developed nations fail to get the recommended eight hours of sleep. The book explains the complex biological mechanisms behind sleep, including the 24-hour circadian rhythm regulated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the buildup of adenosine that creates sleep pressure, demonstrating how these systems interact to govern our sleep-wake cycles. Walker emphasizes that sleep is not a passive state but a critical biological process with distinct stages-NREM and REM sleep-each serving unique functions for physical and mental restoration. During these stages, the body performs essential tasks like tissue repair, memory consolidation, emotional processing, and clearing toxic proteins from the brain. Sleep deprivation has severe consequences, including increased risks of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, as well as significant impairments in cognitive function, emotional regulation, and mental health. The book also explores how modern society has created a 'sleep loss epidemic' through factors like artificial lighting, technology, work schedules, and cultural attitudes that devalue sleep. Walker provides practical strategies for improving sleep quality, such as maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a cool and dark sleeping environment, avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, and establishing a relaxing pre-sleep routine. By understanding and prioritizing sleep, individuals can dramatically improve their overall health, cognitive performance, and emotional well-being. KEY QUOTES: • "Sleeping less than six hours a night is a form of self-inflicted harm that damages every system in your body." - Matthew Walker • "Dreams are not the byproduct of sleep, but rather its purpose, nature's best attempt at emotional first aid." - Matthew Walker • "Our modern world is perfectly designed to disrupt sleep, creating the most sleep deprived era in human history." - Matthew Walker • "The amygdala, your brain's emotional center, becomes 60% more reactive without proper sleep, while the rational prefrontal cortex becomes less active." - Matthew Walker KEY TAKEAWAYS: • Sleep is essential for physical health, with chronic sleep deprivation dramatically increasing risks of serious conditions like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes • Sleep consists of different stages (NREM and REM), each serving unique functions for mental and physical restoration, including memory processing, emotional regulation, and tissue repair • Modern society has created a sleep loss epidemic through artificial lighting, technology, work schedules, and cultural attitudes that devalue sleep • Dreams during REM sleep are crucial for emotional processing, stress reduction, and enhancing creativity by forming unique connections between ideas • Sleep patterns naturally change throughout life stages, with significant variations in sleep needs and rhythms from infancy to old age • Lack of sleep impairs cognitive function, reducing concentration, memory, and decision-making abilities while increasing emotional reactivity... "The Surprising Science of Belief, Opinion, and Persuasion"
Send us a text"In this episode of Besties and the Books, Liz and Ashley dive deep into Glow of the Everflame, book two in Penn Cole's Kindred's Curse Saga. They start off with their spoiler-free reviews, giving the book high praise for character growth, richer world-building, and a masterful slow-burn romance. They give a brief 5 sentence book summary. They also share some fun personal updates, from movie nights to dog mishaps. Once in spoiler territory, they provide a detailed five-sentence plot summary and discuss their favorite tropes like found family, royal intrigue, and strong side characters, all while keeping the tone warm, relatable, and full of fangirl energy."We interviewed Penn Cole, we took a deep dive into Spark of the Everflame, and today we're continuing on with our Kindred's Curse Saga series with our deep dive into book 2: Glow of the Everflame. We discuss why this series, and the FMC Diem Bellator in particular, stray away from expected fantasy conventions by defining strength in a myriad of ways and by emphasizing the importance of embracing the power all of us have within ourselves. Emotion is not inherently weak or feminine and logic is not strong or inherently masculine. Diem consistently acknowledges that working in an either/or framework is impossible and harmful, and uniquely recognizes that the only way to truly be the leader she is destined to be is through both/and thinking, feeling, and problem solving. We talk about the MMC Luther, and whether or not he's a feminist, we break down our favorite and least favorite parts, tropes, and characters, share reviews, and discuss whether or not we're looking forward to reading the sequels. And we start out with a movie themed fave and fail and end on a high note with a smash or pass highschool teen heart throb, and influential scientist edition.Don't be shy, subscribe! Show notes / Cheat Sheet Infographic / Free Audiobook / IN THIS EPISODE: New York Times bestselling author and Communication expert Jefferson Fisher offers a transformative approach to handling difficult conversations by focusing on emotional understanding, self-control, and connection rather than winning arguments. Learn how to argue less and talk more with Jefferson Fisher's simple 3-step system. This summary covers all key ideas from the bestselling book on handling tough conversations and solving conflicts. TOPICS: Conflict resolution, confidence, Boundaries, communication, emotional intelligence KEY FIGURES: NASA, Crucial Conversations, Jefferson Fisher, Jeanette Winterson, Difficult Conversations, Emotional Intelligence, StoryShots, Storyshots App, How to Talk to Anyone, Josh Billings, The Next Conversation: Argue Less, Talk More SUMMARY: Jefferson Fisher, a trial lawyer from Texas, shares his insights on effective communication and conflict resolution in his book 'The Next Conversation'. His approach emphasizes understanding the underlying emotions and struggles driving conflicts, rather than trying to win arguments. Fisher argues that most arguments stem from personal pain and unaddressed emotional challenges, and by shifting from a combative mindset to a curious and empathetic one, individuals can transform difficult conversations into opportunities for deeper connection. Fisher introduces a three-step communication system: say it with control, say it with confidence, and say it to connect. Key strategies include managing emotional reactions through techniques like strategic breathing, using purposeful silence, and avoiding reactive responses. He provides practical tools for handling difficult people, setting healthy boundaries, and framing conversations clearly, with a focus on understanding the other person's perspective rather than proving oneself right. The book offers guidance for navigating tough conversations in various contexts, including workplace interactions and personal relationships. Fisher emphasizes the importance of emotional self-control, assertive communication, and active listening. His approach is rooted in his legal experience and aims to help people turn potentially confrontational situations into opportunities for mutual understanding, respect, and stronger relationships. KEY QUOTES: • "Arguments aren't about winning, they're about understanding people." - Jefferson Fisher • "If I can't be a bridge, I'll be a lighthouse." - Jefferson Fisher • "When you shift from trying to win to seeking understanding, you find solutions that seemed impossible." - Jefferson Fisher • "The person you see isn't always the person you're talking to." - Jefferson Fisher • "Confidence comes from taking action." - Jefferson Fisher KEY TAKEAWAYS: • Arguments are more about understanding underlying emotions and personal struggles than winning or proving a point • Effective communication involves controlling your own emotional reactions before addressing conflicts • Confidence in communication grows through action, not just intention - practice assertive and clear communication techniques • Strategic silence and well-timed pauses can be powerful communication tools, especially when dealing with difficult people • Setting healthy boundaries requires clear, direct communication with specific consequences and follow-through • Tough conversations are opportunities to deepen relationships when approached with curiosity and empathy • Every conversation can be different from the last - focus on learning and understanding rather than being right • Communication skills like emotional self-control, active listening, and framing conversations clearly are essential for resolving conflicts Learn more about your ad choices. TOPICS: Longevity, nutrition, health, technology, biology KEY FIGURES: PayPal, Brian Johnson, CRISPR, Braintree, National Institute on Aging, don't die, StoryShots, Dr. Oliver Zollman, Blueprint Protocol SUMMARY: Brian Johnson, a tech entrepreneur and author of 'Don't Die', has developed an extreme approach to longevity that involves meticulously tracking and optimizing his health. At 47, he claims to have the body of an 18-year-old through a rigorous regimen that includes a strict 1,977-calorie vegan diet consumed within a five-hour window, taking over 100 pills daily, and following a comprehensive health protocol called Blueprint that monitors 81 different body systems. Johnson's methodology goes beyond traditional health practices, treating aging as a disease that can be conquered through systematic interventions. He uses advanced health tracking, including DNA methylation testing and inflammation markers, to guide his daily routines. His approach involves experimental therapies like blood exchange with his son and father, gene therapy interventions, and a unique sleep optimization strategy that creates an ideal rest environment. While Johnson's methods are controversial and expensive, costing over $2 million annually, he believes his work will eventually benefit everyone by pushing the boundaries of longevity research. His book 'Don't Die' presents a philosophical framework for understanding aging, emphasizing that most people live in 'slow suicide' by making short-term choices that harm long-term health. Johnson envisions a future where technology like gene editing, AI, and advanced biotechnology will make radical life extension possible and accessible. KEY QUOTES: • "As a species, we accept our decay, decline and death. I want to argue that the opposite should be true." - Brian Johnson • "Johnson says most people live in slow suicide. They make choices that feel good now but hurt their future selves." - Brian Johnson • "Johnson compares our body to computer software. We can update the code." - Brian Johnson • "Change is hard. Being miserable is harder." - Brian Johnson • "Before any decision, ask does this help me not die?" - Brian Johnson KEY TAKEAWAYS: • Brian Johnson views aging as a disease that can be 'solved' through systematic, data-driven interventions, spending over $2 million annually to track and potentially reverse his biological aging • Johnson's 'Don't Die' philosophy involves making every lifestyle choice through the lens of whether it helps or hurts long-term survival, including a strict 1,977-calorie vegan diet consumed within a 5-hour window and taking over 100 supplements daily • Johnson tracks 81 different body systems using advanced biomarkers like DNA methylation and inflammation markers, allowing him to make real-time adjustments to his health protocols • His approach combines cutting-edge experimental treatments like blood exchange with his son and gene therapy interventions, while acknowledging the current scientific uncertainty of these methods... What should our next book be? Suggest and vote it up on the StoryShots app. IN THIS EPISODE: Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga's book reveals how adopting Adlerian psychological principles can help individuals break free from past constraints, overcome the fear of disapproval, and live more authentically by focusing on personal values and community contribution. TOPICS: Relationships, personal growth, happiness, Self-help, psychology KEY FIGURES: Mark Manson, Man's Search for Meaning, Jordan Peterson, The Courage to Be Disliked, Sigmund Freud,, 12 Rules for Life, Alfred Adler, StoryShots, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck, Viktor E. Frankl, Ichiro Kishimi, Fumitake Koga SUMMARY: The podcast episode explores the key principles of Alfred Adler's psychology as presented in the book 'The Courage to Be Disliked' by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga. The core message challenges traditional psychological thinking by asserting that individuals are not controlled by their past experiences, but rather by their future goals and choices. The book argues that people can liberate themselves by understanding that they have the power to interpret and reframe their life experiences, moving beyond deterministic views of personal development. A central theme of the book is that all problems are fundamentally interpersonal relationship problems, and true freedom comes from developing the courage to be disliked. This means living authentically according to one's values, even if it means facing potential disapproval from others. The authors emphasize the importance of separating tasks in relationships, letting go of the need for external recognition, and focusing on contribution rather than personal gain. The book introduces several transformative mental models from Adlerian psychology, such as horizontal versus vertical relationships, task separation, and the concept of community feeling (Gemeinschaftskefuel). These principles encourage individuals to view themselves as equal members of a community, focus on present-moment living, and find meaning through contributing to others. The ultimate goal is to help readers develop a more authentic, purposeful, and liberated approach to life by challenging societal expectations and internal limiting beliefs. KEY QUOTES: • "What if I told you the key to freedom is actually being willing to be disliked?" - Ichiro Kishimi • "Your life is not something that someone gives you, but something you choose yourself, and you are the one who decides how you live." - Ichiro Kishimi • "Freedom is being disliked by other people." - Ichiro Kishimi • "Happiness is the feeling of contribution." - Ichiro Kishimi KEY TAKEAWAYS: • Your past experiences do not determine your future; you have the power to reinterpret and choose your path forward • Interpersonal relationships are the root of most psychological problems, and understanding relationship dynamics is key to personal growth • Developing the courage to be disliked means living authentically according to your values, even if it means facing potential disapproval from others • True happiness comes from contribution, not recognition - focus on adding value to others and society rather than seeking praise • Practice 'task separation' by clearly distinguishing between your responsibilities and those of others, which creates healthier boundaries in relationships... "The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us"
Send us a textGuess What? It's officially grey! We are in it. Oh my! It's Fifty shades of May over here on the Besties and the Books podcast. Welcome back to our spring mini episode series all about the extremely popular yet widely discredited book series: Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. We're officially into book two and things are not exactly going as planned…If you've been following along and watched our “Dark Romance Enters the Chat” episode then you know, we trace romance novels wayyy back to their origin so we can discuss what societal conditions helped to produce this canon of works mostly written by women, for women, with women's stories, pleasure, and lived experiences at the center. We examine what influence romance books have had on literature and the publishing world as a whole, and then specifically discuss what impact Fifty Shades had on the genre! It just happens to be a BIG bonus that Ashley and Liz have never read it before. So this is all new information to us.We think that whether you find these books problematic or not, credit must be given where credit is due. The fact that these books have been stigmatized, criticized, and repeatedly knocked down is indicative (we think) of a larger societal problem: misogyny. Because as a society, it seems we just can't stand it when women are successful… or when they enjoy something. Whether it's objectively “good” or “profitable” or not. Episode 2 covers book 2: Fifty Shades Darker by E. L. James. The first five-ish minutes are spoiler free with our one sentence rapid star and spice ratings. Then we jam pack this mini episode with an entire plot summary in five sentences (with a special classical surprise!), discuss what our faves and fail characters and plot points are, our feelings, notable quotes, red flags, problematic elements, and end with a fun piece of Fifty Shades trivia.Don't be shy, subscribe! As Rishad says, “Change Sucks. But irrelevance is worse!” First, I found out that we are both quadruple espresso fans, so if you wonder where Rishad gets his energy.... THEN I discovered we both had a thing about MATH that changed our respective trajectories*. But, after comparing our coffee rituals we go full steam into how companies need to evolve old leadership styles —from “bossing” to inspiring. Rishad shares why corporate models are in urgent need of a reset, and how flexibility, curiosity, and a human-centered approach must replace outdated hierarchies. Think “fractional workers” and project-based teams meets AI. Rishad urges organizations to stop clinging to legacy systems and start designing for the future. But, as this is primarily a show about media, marketing and advertising, (he is, after all, being inducted in the Advertising Hall of Fame) he also explores how storytelling goes hand in hand with tech and remains a marketing essential — not despite the data age, but because of it. Discover the "5 Cs" of embracing the future in Marketing. Interestingly, as former Chairman of Razorfish, his imprint may have been made on Anthony Yell, who - per Epi 30 - clearly agrees in Collaboration and merging Creativity with tech and storytelling! Of course, we talk brand purpose -- and that theme actually runs through it all, with Rishad explaining how generosity is not just as a personal value, but a business advantage. He shares how this belief drives the Tobaccowala Foundation's work in improving access to education and healthcare in India — and why doing good can, and should, be good business. This episode is a frank but, yes, inspiring look at how to rethink work, reimagine leadership, and build companies that serve people — not just profit. *(FYI: Hear how math impacted the journey of Cadillac CMO Melissa Grady, too!)
