Find out how early experience running Tabletop roleplaying games combine with Adrian's childhood inspiration (mainly insectoid) and adult inspiration (including coffee) to create his career as an author and what a healthy, happy writing life means to him.   Adrian Tchaikovsky is a British science-fiction and fantasy writer known for a wide-variety of work including the Children of Time, Final Architecture, Dogs of War, Tyrant Philosophers and Shadows of the Apt series, as well as standalone books such as Elder Race, Doors of Eden, Spiderlight and many others. Children of Time and its series has won the Arthur C Clarke and BSFA awards, and his other works  have won the British Fantasy, British Science Fiction and Sidewise Awards.   For a writing workout based on Adrian's interview with Rachel, scroll down or visit WritersGym.com to download every Writing Workout in the series.   Find out more about Adrian at https://adriantchaikovsky.com See him on tour: https://adriantchaikovsky.com/events.html   Join our mailing list at drrachelknightley.substack.com or get in touch at thewritersgym@rachelknightley.com     Writing Workout based on Adrian's interview   Warm-up: Map of Me (or, in honour of Adrian, Spider of Me) 1. Write your name in the middle of a page. Circle it, andgive that circle as many legs as you like. At the end of each leg, write something you love. An interest, an activity, a band, a caffeinated beverage, anything. Spend 1-2 minutes filling the page. There's no such thing as ‘random' or ‘irrelevant' or ‘wrong'. Just go for it.   2. Circle three things. Don't think about why you're picking them, just circle.   3. Select one of those three. Decide that whatever you write with that prompt, for fifteen minutes, is (the first draft of) something your dream publisher wants to publish.   4. Write exactly what comes to you, letting yourself have fun. Be curious. Remember there are no wrong answers. Write for fifteen minutes and see where you go.   Main exercise: The First-Person Monty Python Helmet Step into a character who loves one of those now. Consider what they see, hear, touch, taste and smell. What do they think in their minds, and feel in their bodies, as a response to their emotions?

A feature length episode with Mickie Kennedy, who is the owner and CEO of E-Releases, which is a press release business. He started this business 22 years ago when he found that he could send press releases by email. This triggered a successful business which we discuss on this podcast.   We talk about the role of press releases for businesses, and it was interesting to find out that national companies find stories in the US rather than local first. We talk about his love of British Science Fiction, especially Doctor Who.  We cover his love of writing poetry, and he is hopefully to release a book soon. Please check out Mickie's masterclass where he teaches customers to be more strategic in press releases. Also, he discusses the different types of releases that do get traction. Find more details about the podcast and my coaching business on:https://absolutebusinessmindset.com/abm-coaching-servicesDo you want to be a podcaster? RESIDUESeason 1, Episode 2 Written by John HarrisonDirected by Alex Garcia LopezTimothy: Welcome back folks, we hope everyone had a wonderful New Year's Eve, and are ready to dive into this week's Zombpocalyse Now podcast!Dustin: We're talking about Netflix's 2015 series Residue again this week, so if you haven't seen it and you don't want SPOILERS, then watch to and come back and listen. We'll be here, it's OK. Timothy: Or you could listen to us tell you about it. Your choice. I did want to mention that we refer to Residue as a BBC series this week, aaaaaand it's not a BBC series. Dustin: Yeah, it turns out that there are actually other film and TV studious in the UK besides the BBC, and they do, oh I don't know, A LOT OF PROGRAMMING, and we fell into that weird American thing where we see something made in England and suddenly all you can think of is the British Broadcasting Corporation. I blame PBS.Timothy: It was produced as a limited release feature film and then picked up by Netflix. Supposedly there's talks about a longer season still going on. Anyway, things happen and we talk about them! Like we do! Listen to us do that! Dustin: And come back next week to hear us talk about the third and final episode of the show so far. Then we'll watch something else Not-The-Walking-Dead, because both those shows are still on their breaks. It'll be fun. Thanks for listening folks, and rate and comment on iTunes if you like the show, because it helps people find us and gets us more listeners. Which is nice.

“Princess Cosima and the 1,000 Cats” by Sarah L. Byrne (Originally published in Betwixt #4.) "Provide ships or sails adapted to the heavenly breezes, and there will be some who will not fear even that void." -- Johannes Kepler, 1610 The red palace was home to a thousand cats. Or so people said. Princess Cosima, twenty, beautiful and bored, walked through the courtyards until she saw a lithe sandy female sunning itself on the flagstones. She slipped into the cat's mind and sent it prowling across the square, scrambling up the red stone wall onto a tiled canopy and darting over the battlements above towards the nearest tower. Sarah L. Byrne is a scientific editor and writer in London, UK. Her short speculative fiction has appeared in various publications, including Daily Science Fiction, Nature, and Best of British Science Fiction 2016. She can be found online at sarahbyrne.org/fiction. About the Narrator: Tatiana Grey is a critically acclaimed actress of stage, screen, and the audio booth. She has been nominated for dozens of fancy awards but hasn’t won a single damned thing. However, she does have a feature film hitting the festival circuit, called Serious Laundry. Welcome to the first episode of The Coode Street Roundtable. The Roundtable is a new monthly podcast from Coode Street Productions where panelists James Bradley, Ian Mond, and Jonathan Strahan, joined by occasional special guests, discuss a new or recently released science fiction or fantasy novel. Adam Roberts' The Thing Itself This month James, Ian, and Jonathan discuss The Thing Itself, the latest novel from British Science Fiction and John Campbell Memorial Award winning author Adam Roberts.  The Thing Itself is a powerful and engaging novel described by its publisher as follows:  “Adam Roberts turns his attention to answering the Fermi Paradox with a taut and claustrophobic tale that echoes John Carpenters' The Thing.  Two men while away the days in an Antarctic research station. Tensions between them build as they argue over a love-letter one of them has received. One is practical and open. The other surly, superior and obsessed with reading one book - by the philosopher Kant.  As a storm brews and they lose contact with the outside world they debate Kant, reality and the emptiness of the universe. The come to hate each other, and they learn that they are not alone.”  The Thing Itself has been reviewed by Locus Online and Tor.com. You can order copies of the book from:amazon.com amazon.com.au amazon.co.uk We encourage all of our listeners to leave comments here and we will do our best to respond as soon as possible.Next monthThe Coode Street Roundtable will return at the end of February with a discussion of Charlie Jane Anders's second novel, All the Birds in the Sky.
