How many times have you set a goal for yourself that you didn't follow through on? How many ideas are swirling around in your head, waiting to be brought to life?  Too often, we keep our goals trapped inside our minds. We have a vivid image of what we want, but because we don't know how to get there, we don't try.  Casper Craven came onto YAP to talk about how to set massive goals for ourselves and follow through with them. Caspar has sailed around the world twice, so he is well-versed in turning the impossible into the possible. He has also built several million-dollar companies and delivers keynotes on motivation, goal setting, work/life balance, mental health, and resilience.  In this episode of #YAPClassic, Hala and Caspar talk about how to hold yourself accountable for achieving your goals. He gave tips on how to handle criticism constructively and why deadlines are crucial when starting ambitious new projects. He also revealed one of his best memories from his journey with his family, some of the challenges they ran into, and how they overcame them. Finally, he told Hala about how to build meaningful core values both in your company and in your home.  Topics Include: - Caspar's life before setting sail around the world  - How did he and his wife save their marriage?  - Why deadlines are always necessary  - Making your goals public  - Dealing with criticism  - Using business values in family life  - Building meaningful company values  - Caspar's best memories from sailing around the world  - Challenges at sea  - Channeling family values amid crises  - Developing emotional resilience  - And other topics… Casper Craven is a serial entrepreneur and motivational and teamwork keynote speaker. He is a leading authority in achieving bold goals and a passionate advocate of high-performance teamwork. He became an entrepreneur at 14 years old, catching crabs and lobsters. By 16, he was shipping out half a ton of crabs every week. Since then, he has built and led teams of all sizes. He spent more than 10 years in Professional Services, including five years at KPMG Corporate Finance. During his five years of travel preparation, he built three $1 million businesses - one of which he sold for a seven-figure sum while sailing across the Pacific Ocean.  He has sailed around the world twice, the first time on a trophy-winning race yacht and the second with his wife and three children, who were all under the age of ten at the time. He wrote his first book, Where The Magic Happens, about the process of planning and executing his family's global adventure.  Resources Mentioned: YAP episode #14: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/14-anchor-your-success-with-caspar-craven/id1368888880?i=1000427679742  Caspar's Website: https://www.casparcraven.com/  Caspar's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/casparcraven/  Caspar's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cravencaspar/  Caspar's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/casparcraven Caspar's Twitter: https://twitter.com/casparcraven  Caspar's book, Where The Magic Happens: https://www.amazon.com/Where-Magic-Happens-Family-Changed/dp/1472949919  Connect with Young and Profiting: Hala's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/htaha/     Hala's Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/yapwithhala/     Hala's Twitter: https://twitter.com/yapwithhala  Clubhouse: https://www.clubhouse.com/@halataha   Website: https://www.youngandprofiting.com/  Text Hala: https://youngandprofiting.co/TextHala or text “YAP” to 28046 Learn more about your ad choices. What are the future requirements of successful leadership? The world of the last 3 years is almost unrecognisable. Many things we took for granted, or had never imagined have either changed or happened. When you think of it like that, is it any wonder that the celebrated concepts of leadership, that have been commonplace over the last three decades are now looking outdated and out of place? Couple that with the generational shift that's taking place in the workplace, and the differing needs of today's workplace, and I think there is clearly a need for a good deal more humanity for leaders to be successful going forwards.   In episode 45 of the employee engagement and workplace culture podcast Sticky From The Inside, host Andy Goram, speaks with the author of 3 best-selling books on teams and leadership, and motivational speaker, Caspar Craven. The pair exchange views on what traits are required to be a successful leader of people in the future. The conversation covers mistakes the pair have made, why the command and control leadership model is inappropriate today, emotional understanding, tattoos, sailing around the world with 3 kids under 10, their aversion to phrases such as "soft skills" and "feminisation of the workplace" and how unresolved trauma may be a hidden inhibitor of team success. ----more---- Join The Conversation Find Andy Goram on LinkedIn here Follow the Podcast on Instagram here Follow the Podcast on Twitter here Check out the Bizjuicer website here Get a free consultation with Andy here Check out the Bizjuicer blog here Download the podcast here ----more---- Useful Links Follow Caspar Craven on LinkedIn here Check out Caspar's website here Follow Caspar on Twitter here Follow Caspar on Instagram here Find Caspar's 3 best-selling books here Find Caspar's 20 Huam Leadership Principles here Find out more about Carol Dweck here Watch Carol Dweck on Growth Mindset here Find out more about Ray Dalio here Watch the video on Pain + Reflection = Progress here Follow Jane Adshead Grant on LinkedIn here Find Jane Adshead-Grant's book here Find out more about Bessel Van Der Kolk here Find "The Body Keeps The Score" book here Find out more about Talk Therapy here ----more---- Full Episode Transcript Get the full transcript of the episode here

In this series of DO podcasts, Gav Thompson chats to people about how they have achieved their amazing levels of success, as well as uncovering some of the despites that they have had to overcome to get there. In Episode 5 of Being Amazing Despite..., Gav chats to Caspar Craven. Caspar was running an unsuccessful business and was close to divorce when he had the genius idea to pack it all in and sail around the world for 2 years in a small yacht with his wife, who hated sailing and suffered from seasickness, and his 3 little children, aged 9, 7 and 2. This in itself is a very interesting, if slightly bonkers, story. But the amazingness of Caspar's story is actually how he managed to achieve such a monumental adventure and his learnings along the way, including overcoming himself and his habit of stuffing things up. Michael wrote me the morning before we scheduled this conversation to say he ended up spending more time on the screen when he intended less. He wondered if we should skip it. Longtime listeners may remember similar results with guests Jim Harshaw and Caspar Craven.I told him I'm not looking for a Disney version implying that acting sustainable was easy. I believe listeners engage more with hearing the challenges than perfection, though it would mean him sounding human. He magnanimously agreed. So we'll get to hear his challenges. As it happens, his next book is called Hooked: Food, Free Will, and How the Food Giants Exploit Our Addictions, which overlaps with getting hooked on screen time. We ended up with some sneak preview of the book and how it relates to polluting behavior, especially Michael's challenge. We describe a parallel between changing eating habits and sustainability habits came across, as well as the techniques doof industries use to establish habits that help them, however unhealthy for you or damaging to Earth's ability to sustain life and human society. Since they work to get past your defenses, often with children too young to have developed defenses, I would call them insidious or creepy, like a tick creeping slowly past your defenses. The challenge in changing these habits, from one perspective, is to create new neural pathways. We focus on the objects of our craving and the craving, but looking past our craving to seeing that we are training ourselves and the feelings of withdrawal will pass seems to make iteasier. Caspar Craven, author of 'Be More Human: Rethinking The Rules of High Performance Teamwork' shares how to re-engage employees after furlough, how to lead through uncertainty and why building trust is more important than ever. KEY TAKEAWAYS One we have a clear vision and goal of where we wish to get as a team, you will find a way or you will make a way. If the purpose is strong enough, you’ll get there. If you do not have trust, then you do not have a team. We engender trust by being consistent and keeping our promises. Ask open questions, listen, and then act upon what you hear. The more engaged and empowered our teams feel, the strong the dynamic, and the greater the level of input. This can lead to a wealth of ideas and inspiration from all sides. No two people are the same. We cannot assume that we will be able to pick up where we left off. The key to re-engaging is to understand that our teams are coming from very different directions. Set your narrative down clearly. Provide the goals and direction for your returning teams. With a clear goal ahead, we can then focus on enabling each member on a one-to-one basis. BEST MOMENTS ‘Let’s sit down with a blank piece of paper and rewrite the story of our lives’ ’Trust is the first building block’ ’The best ideas float to the surface. The best ideas win’ ‘Focus on the Pole Star rather than being distracted by the lights of all the passing ships’ ‘Listen to people. Really listen. My guest this week has been with us before but I’ve brought him back as at the time of recording this episode, we are going through a lockdown situation.  We are trapped at home with our families and our loved ones and this man has experienced this for himself for a long period of time. He is an entrepreneur and adventurer, he believes in challenging conventional thinking on how leaders and teams become truly effective and create extraordinary results. His toughest challenge by far was building his family team to sail around the world: with his wife and three children aged 9, 7 and 2.  Today he is going to share with us what he learned in those 2 years that can help us in our time of lock down. My guest is Caspar Craven. Bio From entrepreneur, to corporate team management, to yachtsman, Caspar Craven has over 30 years’ experience in building teams to make things happen. After University, he spent 8 years in the corporate world – first as a Chartered Accountant and then as an Investment Banker at KPMG. In 2000, Caspar left the corporate world for a brand new team and he signed up for the BT Global Challenge (called the World’s Toughest Yacht Race). He joined “Yacht Quadstone” as the youngest crew member onboard.  After winning trophies around the world and building a team as Watch Captain, he returned to KPMG to run a Technology and Telecoms team. In 2001 he returned to entrepreneurial life as an e-commerce entrepreneur. His toughest team challenge by far was in 2009 when he built his family team to sail around the world: with his wife and three children aged 9, 7 and 2. Throughout his career as both family man and entrepreneur, he’s built multiple successful businesses from scratch and sold one for a 7 figure sum…whilst sailing the Pacific Ocean. In his Keynotes and Workshops Caspar takes the audience through the key steps he’s developed to create and build winning, high-performance teams in business, sport and family environments. He weaves in stories from his experiences leading a team on the world’s toughest yacht race, building a successful business, and building teams within global corporates. Caspar Craven delivers a truly memorable message with energy, with humility and humour so that you come away inspired with fresh ideas and energy to have the biggest impact on those that you work and spend time with.  Each session is tailored to meet the exact needs of your organisation. This week I’ve gone back to the archives again because there are some jewels in there.  Here is one of the early episodes, my guest was Caspar Craven, who is an entrepreneur and adventurer. Caspar has had oodles of experience, building teams and organisations, creating high growth strategies for business.  He’s also an award-winning yachter.  He combined his business skills (leadership and teambuilding) and yachting skills when he took his family on his toughest challenge by far making them into a team to sail around the world, he, his wife and three children, then aged 9, 7, and 2. There were so many amazing lessons for business, for teams, for families, for relationships, about leadership, growth, work/life balance and working out what your true colours are. Caspar tells us about his first business at the age of 14 selling crabs by the sea, his amazing adventure sailing around the world with his family. What he discovered about home schooling his children and sharing the lessons he learnt on his adventure that apply to the business world. All this and more… NB – no books were thrown into the sea so please don’t write in to complain.  Bio From entrepreneur, to corporate team management, to yachtsman, Caspar Craven has over 30 years’ experience in building teams to make things happen. After resetting during conversation 1.5, Caspar returns with his son and wife---Columbus and Nicola---for a touching proper second episode. The three of them approached the challenge as a family, though you'll hear how Columbus led his parents in many ways. It sounds like he had tried for some time to guide his parents. Now that they committed to act, they heard him more. I see this trend a lot when people commit---that they realize they could have acted earlier and that acting brings them closer to relatives and others in their communities.Columbus steals the show, having studied, cared, and acted on the environment, patiently bringing his parents along. I hope all the parents who tell me that kids make acting environmentally harder. In the Craven family, the child is leading the adults. We talk about sailing, their having sailed around the world, gardening, school, and more. They sound to me like they're just getting started. Remember how enthusiastic Caspar sounded at the end of the first episode? He made doing his commitment sound so easy. Well, sometimes it is, but not always. He emailed me to postpone, saying he hadn't done as much as he expected. I asked him to consider sharing his actual experience, not a romanticized version of it. This podcast isn't supposed to say changing your beliefs and habits is easy, but to recount how it happens. I believe that when people act for personal reasons, even if it's hardChange can be hard even for people who speak and coach change. So I commend Caspar on sharing openly, even what likely made him feel vulnerable, but it was valuable to others. It's also what leaders do.What Caspar shared with his son, I found touching. His son had been sharing with him for longer than he knew. This experience opened him to connecting with his son.I hope listeners are seeing that people care deeply on the environment and are acting more all the time. People who act today become leaders because everyone who wants clean air, land, and water wants to follow. The longer you wait, the less connected with this community of leaders you are. Also the more dirty your air, land, and water.Acting on your environmental values builds community, especially with family, the closer they are the more to bond on, assuming they like clean air, land, and water. Caspar leads a fulfilling life and helps people do the same. What's his expertise? How has he found purpose more than others? Why do corporations book him to help them with morale? He sailed around the world with his family. He lived a comfortable corporate life. He didn't have to do something out of the mainstream and independent. It forced them to figure out their narrative and purpose. Since most people don't challenge themselves that way, they don't learn about themselves so much. Were his choices easy? No, he had to figure it out by acting, no different than anyone else. His leaving the corporate world made him more valuable for the corporate world. Anyone can do it. Few do.It's like environmental leadership. Anyone can do it. Few do. The opportunities are global. Billions demand it.Caspar and his family show how much joy, community, personal growth, meaning, and purpose can come from acting on your values.Regular listeners may have picked up my trend toward sailing and sailors. My avoiding flying has led me into a wonderful community and amazing experiences.EducationAs a professor and having earned a PhD, education is a longtime interest, especially experiential and self-directed learning.Caspar and I talked about educating children outside the regular system, through curiosity. It turns out kids learned more when starting with what interested them.Like what motivates people to act environmentally or any type of following: telling people what to do doesn't work as well as asking their interests.I hope you hear from him to change things on the scale in your life as he did in his. He's no more or less human than anyone else. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Greetings, SuperFriends! Today we are joined by Caspar Craven. Caspar is a successful serial entrepreneur, who has 30 years experience in building teams and making things happen. He started at age 14 working in start-up businesses, struggling businesses, high growth businesses, as well as large corporates. He's even built a team on a trophy-winning around the world racing yacht! But this is not why we had him on the show today. In fact we had him on the show because Caspar, his wife, and their 3 kids had one of the most incredible life experiences and adventures of anyone I've ever heard of - that is, they sailed around the world for 2 straight years, living, working, and homeschooling their kids on a boat. Crazy, right? I wanted to talk to Caspar not only about entrepreneurship and teams, but also about lifestyle design, leading a family, and setting up your life, your finances, and your goals so that you can also have this incredible amount of freedom. But, we went even further than that! We talked about all the different incredible life lessons and experiences that he gained both personally and professionally, as well as his advice for you on how you can create the life of your dreams, even if that is completely off the beaten path. I always enjoy talking to Caspar and this episode was no exception - I hope you enjoy it as well! -Jonathan Levi

Five years of planning - the vision, the values, the practicalities, the realities, the excitement, the highs, the lows and the seemingly adventure-stopping obstacles - led to two wonderful years of living their dream - the magical and the scary, enjoying life and learning as a family. This is Caspar's story. And it's really important to remember that distinction. That they are only opinions.” [10:42] “And the only thing that matters is your reaction to whatever comes up. Because you know in life, in business, stuff's going to come up at some point. You just don't know what it is. And it's all about your reaction, how you deal with that....” [20:05] “I always think that the things that will make you thrive in business, are exactly the same things that will make you thrive in a family.” [25:15] “I've got friends who have got boats who were going to go sailing around the world at the same time as we were. They're still in England, they haven't left because they are waiting for perfect. It doesn't exist. Figure out what are the really big things, get on the way, and then trust yourself, you'll be able to figure out those things as you go along.” [26:46] “The thing that I've learnt, whenever I get to a point where I don't know the answer, I feel the frustration building up in me, map coming down off the wall, that sort of stuff. I now know that's a trigger, I've got to go and learn something.” [31:46]   FOLLOW CASPAR CRAVEN: WEBSITE - https://bit.ly/2NqKE4d TWITTER - https://bit.ly/2zXpRBS LINKEDIN - https://bit.ly/2OF2HZn VIMEO - https://bit.ly/2OFWjB2 INSTAGRAM - https://bit.ly/2QyndIk FACEBOOK - https://bit.ly/2NtXj6y BOOKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Where the Magic Happens - https://amzn.to/2y7JlCJ [2:16] Psycho Cybernetics - https://amzn.to/2yjfuJA [9:33] PEOPLE MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Dan Kennedy - https://bit.ly/2PgBf16 [15:17]

Business Coaching with Join Up Dots

Sailing Around The World With Your Family WIth Caspar Craven My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who really believes in going where the heart leads. At the age of 14 he launched his first business catching crabs and lobsters, and wow what a success. By the age of 16 he was exporting 1/2 tonne of crabs a week to Spain. Realising that catching crabs wasn't going to make an impact on the world, he then went to University and for the next 8 years worked in the corporate world - first as a Chartered Accountant and then as an Investment Banker at KPMG. In 2001 he returned to entrepreneurial life as an e-commerce entrepreneur, and over the following 15 years, raised money for, built, grown and sold businesses primarily in the technology sector. As he says "I've made mistakes. I've fallen over. I've got up again and carried on. I've had some great successes and some failures." which is of course what life is all about. But how do you take that feeling of...ok, things could go a bit wrong, but hey we can deal with it and have fun in the process too? Well he has done just that and in 2009, along with his wife he hatched a plan to sail around the world with his young children and spent the next 5 years planning how to make things happen. Now in 2016, he successfully completed his circumnavigation having experienced amazing highs, having to make heart-wrenching decisions and agonising lows on his 7-year voyage from idea to completion. He has been on a journey of discovery, not least to find the strength within himself to take forward and inspire others to take action and go for it. Now he is on a mission to be a truly inspiring leadership and team building speaker, giving actionable advice on how to achieve amazing results both professionally and personally, changing lives for the better. So how do you take your own passions and convince the family that its also a great idea for them to get involved in? And when it goes wrong, is there always an answer or sometimes just a different direction to the end goal? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Caspar Craven   Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Caspar Craven such as: Caspar shares how he was advised by his father to become a chartered accountant as it was a safe job, which he can now see was never the right place for himself to end up. We talk with passion as to the delight he has found since he got back to land, taking people on a journey of discovery, through his talks, presentations and leadership lessons. Caspar reveals the moment when he sat with his wife and asked her "Is there more to life than this....and if there is, lets go out and get it" and lastly…. Why he now teaches his children to focus in on what they are most interested in and go deeper and deeper into the subject to find the path.

He sailed around the world, twice; the second voyage with his young family in tow. And in spite of starting a crabbing business in his teens and several other ventures throughout his adulthood, his expeditions are where Caspar Craven learned, along with his family, some of the most vital lessons in life, not the least of which is how to be alive. The most important skill they learned on the high seas through their many adventures is emotional resilience. Hear how they cultivated that resilience and how you can too on this episode of Spartan Up. Lessons: 1. Teach resilience by modeling resilience.
 2. Integrative learning through following a passion through all its aspects (math, science, humanities, etc.) can be a more effective teaching tool than learning each discipline in isolation and without context.
 3. Talk about what you want to do all the time until it becomes vivid and real to you, then figure out how to do it.
