In 2011, Cavin fell 20 feet from a rooftop water tower scaffolding. His head struck a steel beam on the way down before crashing onto the concrete rooftop below. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and put on life support. While in a coma, an MRI revealed a severe diffuse axonal injury (DAI), which is one of the most devastating types of brain injury. Statistically…over 90 percent of patients with this brain injury never regain consciousness, and most of those who do will often remain in a persistent vegetative state. His recovery journey began after finally waking from a 12-day coma before serious complications arose with the need to induce a second coma. In the following months, he endured severe brain fog, memory loss, breathing problems, in coordination with the left side of my body (my left hand was completely flexed inward), and…he didn’t eat, walk, or talk for months. Following the acute stages of his brain injury, a dense brain fog, limited mobility, and numerous other difficulties persisted he continued to navigate the physical and emotional toll of his new circumstances. At a pivotal moment, he was introduced to functional medicine, which illuminated for him a different way of looking at recovery. As several treatments, exercises, and therapies were implemented…he began to reclaim the mental clarity I had before my injury. An enormous amount of work and therapy played in his rehabilitation as he worked to regain everyday faculties and relearned how to live. In this podcast interview Cavin talks about: The aftermath of his accident and the process of finding the right modalities for the best chance for a full recovery. How nutrition played a pivotal role in his recovery and the benefits of good nutrition on the brain. His inspiration for writing his book called Feed A Brain. The benefits of exercise and nutrition on proper brain function. Positive habits that optimize brain function. And so much more. www.feedabrain.com cavin@feedabrain.com

Our guest is a patient of the medical system who decided to take health into his own hands and educating himself of his medical condition. This is a story of a patient seeking to fight for his life after a life altering injury, that led to true personalized care and a fascinating journey to recovery giving a new lease on a new life with a new purpose. On today's podcast we interview Cavin Balaster, who sustained a very significant traumatic brain injury in 2011 which may have left him bed ridden had he decided to accept his situation. However as of 2018 he is spreading the word of brain healing helping other people heal from this kind of an injury or insult. In this story following his injury Cavin’s initial MRI did not show any devastating problem. He however did have some significant damage in a few days.Cavin had what was called a diffuse axonal brain injury due to a fall and trauma to the skull and brain.Initially his CT scan showed no specific findings but later showed some extensive damage including blood collection outside his brain putting pressure on his brain called subdural hematoma. He was given 10% chance of recovery and a high possibility of being in a vegetative state.Learn more about Cavin Balaster at:https://www.facebook.com/feedabrain/https://adventuresinbraininjury.com/podcasts/Dr. Nisha Chellam is a Board certified Internist who is also board certified in Integrative and Holistic medicine. Cavin Balaster, founder of Feed a Brain (feedabrain.com) and Adventures in Brain Injury (adventuresinbraininjury.com), author, and sought-after speaker, delivers an informative and important discussion on brain function and the nutritional protocol that can deliver dramatic results. Cavin Balaster made a miraculous recovery from an accident that could have easily taken his life instantly. In 2011, he survived a two-story fall and was comatose for twelve days. Balaster was diagnosed with a diffuse axonal injury (DAI) and his chances for recovery were not good, bleak actually, at less than 10%. Emergency medicine and the work of many skilled, truly outstanding healthcare professionals and specialists saved his life, without a doubt. Balaster acknowledges that he would absolutely be dead if it were not for their incredible work over a long period comprised of many crucial moments in his recovery. But after he began to wake from the severe brain fog, and recover somewhat from the memory loss, double vision, infections, etc. when he was able to begin doing some research on his own, he started on a mission, a goal to take back his life to the best of his ability. He states that once he was cognizant of his predicament and the gravity of it, he felt he was faced with a choice: to wallow in despair considering the impact of his injury or consider it to be an adventure. He chose the latter. Balaster recounts the early months of his life after the fall and subsequent severe brain injury. As he describes, the entire ordeal, as we can only imagine, was overwhelming to say the least. He talks about the extreme, and frightening, brain fog that he experienced early on and how he actually had no memory of what happened and no way to understand where he was or who the white lab coat people were. His brain fog was so intense that he imagined he might have even been kidnapped and the lab coat people were using his body to test and experiment on. Clearly, it was not a good time for Balaster. But slowly, his brain fog began to clear so he could begin to understand where he was, and what was happening to him. After defying death through the help of his incredibly wonderful team of intelligent and supportive healthcare providers, and waking from the coma, Balaster dug deep into functional nutrition, functional neurology, neuro optometry (developmental optometry), physical and occupational therapy, and other targeted therapies. And it is these methods and practices that he attributes to his incredible recovery, at such an accelerated pace. Balaster talks about his first discovery of the nutritional connection, and how his nutritional protocol was restoring his clarity. And he describes the technical aspects of how the intestinal process is coordinated with the brain. Balaster discusses his hunger for education on the various subjects that were affecting his life and recovery. He began taking online courses at multiple universities to further understand how the brain works, and how it is fueled—neurometabolism. He details some of the many and various nutritional supplements to his diet from bone broth, to licorice, to L-glutamine, as well as fruits and vegetables, etc., and how he began to see incredible improvements right away. Balaster discusses the details in his book, covering ketogenic metabolism, color charts for fruits and vegetables, and the carbohydrate ratings of foods. Balaster documented his process to neuro-rehabilitation in an attempt to more fully understand and heal his body and brain. He discusses his blog, Adventures in Brain Injury, and the international attention he received from his postings and research. Balaster talks about the work he has done with clients who have severe injuries, and the nutritional coaching he provides to the patients and their doctors that has led to many remarkable changes and improvements. As Balaster recounts, his work with patients is tremendously rewarding. As the author of How to Feed a Brain: Nutrition for Optimal Brain Function and Repair and as a successful podcast host on the related subjects, Balaster has now devoted his life to helping others who are struggling with health issues, sometimes very severe ones as his was. Through Balaster's journey he has gained incredible knowledge regarding the optimization of brain function and he seeks to share his experiences, information, training, and services with the community.

Cavin is the man. And I mean that in the legit way not the School of Rock way. In 2011, he fell from 20 feet from a rooftop water tower, immediately losing consciousness, and suffering a diffuse axonal injury. Initially he was in pretty bad shape, without the ability to eat or breath on his own. After meeting with a functional neurologist, he was inspired to change his diet in order to address some of his symptoms. As it turns out, it completely changed his life. He quickly took a deep dive into the world of functional medicine, in order to find other solutions to his problems. Long story short, he soon become a well-known name in the field of nutrition post brain injury. He currently runs his own blog and podcast called Adventures in Brain Injury (http://adventuresinbraininjury.com/). If you are in any way concerned with nutritional mechanisms to ameliorate your TBI symptoms, this is the podcast to listen to. He also has his own book called How to Feed a Brain. You can find it on Amazon or at the website above. This episode was a treasure-trove of knowledge, so I know you will get a lot out of it. You might want to get a piece a scratch paper and notes to write stuff down. His story starts at 5:11 Enjoy!

In 2011 Cavin Balaster sustained a severe traumatic brain injury that left him comatose with less than a 10% chance of ever regaining consciousness beyond a persistent vegetative state. He didn't eat, walk, or talk for months while he was in the hospital. He was breathing from a tube in his neck, receiving nutrition from a tube in his belly, and his left hand was completely flexed inward. About a year after his injury, he was introduced to a nutritional protocol that helped him begin to regain some clarity. That's when he dove into an intense study of why nutrition made such a difference. For over five years, he has devoted his life to studying metabolism, neurometabolism, mechanisms of neuroplasticity, neuroscience, and nutrition, while reaching out to doctors, researchers, practitioners, and neuroscientists, to learn everything he can to optimize his brain function and to maximize his recovery. Cavin recently released the book , which is the culmination of the nutritional tools he has learned through this journey. Cavin wrote this book to share with others the nutritional information that has helped him to regain his brain function. Blogger, podcaster, and head trauma survivor Cavin Balaster is our interview guest today in Episode 1363 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.” In 2011, Cavin Balaster fell 20 feet from a rooftop water tower scaffolding. His head struck a steel beam on the way down before crashing onto the concrete rooftop below. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and put on life support. While in a coma, an MRI revealed a severe diffuse axonal injury (DAI), which is one of the most devastating types of brain injury. Statistically over 90 percent of patients with this brain injury never regain consciousness, and most of those who do will often remain in a persistent vegetative state. Following the acute stages of his brain injury, a dense brain fog, limited mobility, and numerous other difficulties persisted as he continued to navigate the physical and emotional toll of his new circumstances. At a pivotal moment,he was introduced to functional medicine, which illuminated a different way of looking at recovery. As several treatments, exercises, and therapies were implemented he began to reclaim the mental clarity he had before his injury. Listen in today as Jimmy talks with Cavin about his amazing story of tragedy to recovery and the steps he took to regain his life and now help others do the same. He didn’t eat, walk, or talk for months while he was in the hospital. He was breathing from a tube in his neck, receiving nutrition from a tube in his belly, and his left hand was completely flexed inward.About a year after his injury, he was introduced to a nutritional protocol that helped him begin to regain some clarity. That’s when he dove into an intense study of why nutrition made such a difference. For over 6 years, he has devoted his life to studying metabolism, neurometabolism, mechanisms of neuroplasticity, neuroscience, and nutrition, while reaching out to doctors, researchers, practitioners, and neuroscientists, to learn everything he can to optimize his brain function and to maximize his recovery.Cavin started an award-winning blog and a podcast “Adventures in Brain Injury”, where he interviews doctors, practitioners, researchers, and others involved in neurorehabilitation and brain function. He is soon to release a book called How to Feed a Brain, which is the culmination of the nutritional tools he has learned through this journey. Cavin wrote this book to share with others the nutritional information that has helped him to regain his brain function. While his recovery has been an astounding example for brain injury survivors, this book is not just for those with neurological conditions –it is for anyone wanting to improve their brains. Recovering from a brain injury – a topic that many of are affected by – can also come down to what you're putting in your body. My guest tonight, Cavin Balaster, actually had to rebuild his brain function after a shocking and devastating brain injury. And through functional medicine and nutrition, he was able to recover amazingly from his tragic accident. I can't wait for you to hear Cavin's story. It's so inspiring and insightful, while also really making us think about the importance of what we put in our bodies, no matter how healthy we are. Tonight on Dr. Lo Radio, we're chatting all about brain recovery and health – and what you can do today to keep your brain in top form. In 2011, Cavin survived a two-story fall, was comatose for twelve days, diagnosed with a diffuse axonal injury (DAI) and was given less than a 10% chance of recovery. Once awake, he suffered from severe brain fog, memory loss, breathing problems, double-vision, serious infections, and was ultimately unable to eat, walk, or talk for several months. With the support of family and friends, he pushed himself through various treatments and worked to regain most of his functioning. Throughout his recovery, he documented each important event, corresponding with practitioners to understand metabolism, neuro-metabolism, and mechanisms of neuroplastiticity in order to find the most effective methods to rehabilitate his brain and body after a devastating brain injury. Today, Cavin is a speaker and educator and it has become his mission to help people feed their brains nutritionally, cognitively, and spiritually.
