In the Summer of 2014, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was all the rage on social media. It was a viral sensation. It went away as quickly as it appeared. I shouldn't be shocked, but another challenge is upon us eleven years later. This time, a student organization at the University of South Carolina has brought it back to shine the spotlight on mental health. They posted their first video on social media just a few weeks ago. And just like the first time, it's already starting to be copied. My high school-aged nephews have already participated, and it's just a matter of time before you see it everywhere... “We're in the news business,” Dick Grove insists, “Not the PR business." His reasoning is straightforward: Individuals and companies must think like journalists, not self-promoters, to earn media coverage. Dick is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Inkinc Public Relations and author of the quasi tell-all, It's the Media Stupid! pr without the bs. For more than five decades, Dick has been at the forefront of the public relations industry. His media relations philosophy aligns closely with that of Monday Morning Radio founding host Dean Rotbart, whose courses at Wizard Academy — Newsroom Confidential, Buzz Snatching, and Reputation Tool Chest — all taught the necessity of understanding how journalists and news organizations think and operate. Before hiring a PR agency or pitching journalists and social media influencers yourself, hear firsthand from Dick and Dean what it truly takes to win the media's favor. Monday morning is here! Started things off with a look back at Irishfest, including an appearance by Zac Brown! Recapped this weekend's final Olympic events including the men's & women's basketball, and the strange breakdancer from Australia that everyone's talking about. Let you know what's on TV now that the Olympics are over, and we also had a great story about a missing 5 year-old in Florida that was found clinging to a log in a pond by deputies. This week's "Monday Morning Throwback" went all the way back to 2014 when we were challenging all sorts of people to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Wild finish to the Nascar race yesterday, and Red Sox outfielder, Jarren Duran, is likely going to get suspended by MLB for his homophobic insults directed towards a fan. Brian & Jean argued about how to properly butter an ear of sweet corn. In other food-related news, there's a new burger named after Olympic gold-medal winner, Noah Lyles, that's free if you can finish it in under 9.79 seconds. During today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a shirtless guy climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the astronauts that might be stranded in space until February, a guy who tried to steal a bunch of poker chips from a dealer in a casino, a sign that fell & injured a woman in MA, a group of Germans who vandalized Joshua Tree, a guy who played World of Warcraft for 78 hours straight, a manure truck & a molasses truck were involved in an accident, a large tortoise named "Stitch" who got loose, and a guy who broke INTO jail. Tuesday marked a decade since the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge went viral online. It saw people around the world dumping ice-cold water over their heads and posting it online to nominate others, raising awareness and money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Host Jeff Douglas is joined by David Taylor, the vice-president of Research and Strategic Partnerships with ALS Canada, to talk about how the challenge has made a difference.

Happy Friday, y'all! We wrapped up the week today with all sorts of stuff. Of course, we talked quite a bit about the Olympics, including an updated medal count, Simone Biles' new gold medal, Katie Ledecky's 13th career medal, Kate Douglass' first ever gold, and of course…the whole boxing thing. Let you know what's on TV this weekend and what's in theaters, and we had a cool story about a kitten born with four ears! Did you know that this month is the 10-year anniversary of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge? The Packers got some new uniforms this season, and our bus trips to Lambeau are now online at WiscoTrips.com! Back to the Olympics with the Turkish gun guy going viral, and a great endorsement deal between and Italian gymnast & a cheese manufacturer. Plus, have you seen the video of the mom trying to do some of the gymnastics moves in her kitchen? Had a phone issue this morning, so no Racing Report from Doc! Sorry! During today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a McDonald's employee that set a fire in the dumpster, a housekeeper in Vegas that was stealing from people staying at the hotel, a stuntman named Sparky Spangler, a bunch of goats that went missing in Milwaukee, a guy who got bit by a snake after trying to rescue it from being run-over by cars, and a VERY dysfunctional family that fought about some chicken. Send us a Text Message. In this episode of "Not Well," the hosts engage in a vibrant and eclectic discussion that spans a wide array of topics, reflecting the podcast's signature mix of humor, candor, and edgy commentary. The episode kicks off with tales from a recent trip to Mexico, highlighting the hassles of dealing with customs and the quirky inconveniences of travel. This sets the stage for a deeper exploration of personal experiences and societal observations.A humorous and somewhat graphic segment unfolds as one host discusses the effects of eating a large quantity of grapes, which leads to an unexpected and uncomfortable digestive reaction, humorously detailing the trials of dealing with a stomach upset from seemingly innocent healthy snacks. This personal anecdote spirals into a broader discussion on how everyday choices, like diet or travel, can lead to unforeseen consequences. The conversation takes a playful turn with a discussion on physical discomforts associated with everyday objects, specifically the thumb pain experienced from holding Outshine bars too long. This lighthearted complaint is juxtaposed with a more serious contemplation of health and illness as they touch on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, bringing a moment of reflection on community support for diseases.Throughout the episode, the hosts weave a theme of interconnectedness, musing on how everything from personal health to travel experiences are linked, creating a tapestry of life's oddities and adventures. They philosophize about the universe's bizarre connections, suggesting that every action and decision is part of a larger, interconnected system, whether it's dealing with customs in foreign countries, dietary repercussions, or the simple act of eating an icy treat.Overall, this episode encapsulates the essence of "Not Well," blending the trivial with the profound in a way that keeps listeners both entertained and reflective, always coming back for more of the unique takes on the chaotic journey of life.GayTravel, LGBTComedy, QueerLife, GayHealth, DragCulture, QueerVoices, LGBTQPodcast, GayHumor, QueerReflections, GayCommunitySupport, LGBTQLifestyle, GayBanter, QueerJourneys, GayExperiences, QueerInterconnectednessSupport the Show.As always you can write us at nowellpodcast@gmail.com or call us at (614) 721-5336 and tell us your Not Wells of the week InstagramTwitterBobby's Only FansHelp us continue to grow and create amazing content, like a live tour or just help fund some new headphones when needed. Patient Advocates do more than raise money—they are active participants in the drug development process. While the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge garnered global attention, lesser-known patient advocates also flex their expertise to drive new treatments and cures. In this episode, we talk with two moms, one who is a patient herself, about their work as partners in research and development, helping bring treatments for two rare diseases to the market. Great news, the FDA approved the first A-L-S treatment funded by the Ice Bucket Challenge. The millions of dollars raised through the 2014 ALS Ice Bucket Challenge went into the development and trial of AMX0035, as well as fund the years-long advocacy campaign that pushed the FDA to approve the treatment. However, there is one negative to this new drug and Dr. Smeltzer is here with more. Listen to Lamont & Tonelli Monday through Friday, 6-10am, on 107.7 The Bone in the San Francisco Bay Area. Email to Chris Wilson, developer of the TigerSelfieApp Since the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was in the news yesterday, I didn't want to wait for our creatives to come up with messaging, so I took your ideas and turned them into this page: http://bigcatrescue.org/selfie Our creatives can tweak the message to help it gain steam. Happy for your input as well. I then added the graphic to the side bar of our website to start pulling in traffic for the app. Our website had 2.8 million unique visitors in the past year, so hopefully a number of them will click on the link. I also added the call to action on the main page of our site and on two of the popular pages about Cecil the lion at: http://bigcatrescue.org/cecil-lion/ and http://bigcatrescue.org/cecil-the-lion-an-agent-of-change/ Today I will be sending out postcards to members of Congress, asking them to support our bill, but will use the Tiger Selfie Challenge as the image, so that when they start seeing it, they will notice it. I will be posting Cecil stories on Examiner and Medium next, but because of the tie in, of 99% of lions shot as trophies starting out as cubs born in cages for photo ops, I can work in that call to make the Tiger Selfie Challenge in those articles, and then still come back a week later with the article just about the app. I also picked up the URL Tiger Selfie Challenge since I think people might search that phrase. I pointed it to BigCatRescue.org/selfie where all of the links then go to your app in iTunes. I created a Facebook ad to run for $1000 targeting English speakers who list cats (and wild cats species, nature, wildlife, etc) in their interests lists. FB says that based on this criteria, only about $350 will be spent in the next month, but I want to get the big cat enthusiasts onboard first and then could open up the demographics to a larger audience. I'll give One Green Planet the go ahead to re purpose my article to their 5 million readers. I think they will run w/ it. I'll keep you posted. For the cats, Carole Baskin, CEO of Big Cat Rescue I also sent it to reporters for Huffington Post, the Dodo, Tigers4Tigers and Jane Velez-Mitchell. I sent this FB message to the 52 most influential people I know there: Would you help protect lions like Cecil by taking the Tiger Selfie Challenge? It's a fast, fun, easy app that enables you to post your selfies that turn into a message about why posing with lion, tiger or liger cubs is always Cruel NOT cool. http://bigcatrescue.org/selfie/ I also sent it to our lobbyist, Carson Barylak at IFAW, GFAS, Bruce Perlowin, Keepers of the Wild, the conference members from the Big Cat Workshop. Mike Markarian said he would check it out. I asked him to promote to HSUS. Searched the term #TigerSelfie on Twitter all the way back to Nov 2014 and DM'd each with: Take the Tiger Selfie Challenge to protect lions like Cecil and tigers. http://bigcatrescue.org/selfie/ #TigerSelfie Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet. You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! Visit BigCatRescue.org/Amazon-smile You can see photos, videos and more, updated daily at BigCatRescue.org Check out our main channel at YouTube.com/BigCatRescue Music (if any) from Epidemic Sound (http://www.epidemicsound.com) This video is for entertainment purposes only and is my opinion.

Davatzes joined the company as CEO in 1983 just as A&E Networks was formed through the merger of fledgling cable channels Entertainment Network, owned by RCA and the Rockefeller family, and ARTS Network, owned by Hearst and ABC. A+E Networks today is a 50-50 joint venture of the Walt Disney Co. and Hearst Corp. Davatzes served as CEO emeritus. Davatzes led the company's launch of the signature A&E Network (an amalgam of Arts and Entertainment) in 1984 and History Channel in 1995 (History formally dropped “Channel” from its moniker in 2008). He served as CEO of the parent company through 2005, when he was succeeded by protege Abbe Raven, who started at the company as a secretary. Davatzes was known for promoting educational outreach and the importance of industry R&D during his run at A&E Networks. The company later expanded to include the Lifetime cable channel as well as more recent entries like lifestyle channel FYI and Lifetime Movie Network. Disney executive chairman Bob Iger hailed him as a “towering figure in the early days of cable television (who helped) build some of the most iconic brands in the media landscape.” Iger added that he was “a person of true integrity.” He died in Wilton, Connecticut.24th August 2021 – Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts passes away at 80 - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-25/rolling-stones-drummer-charlie-watts-dies-at-age-80/100404658Charlie Watts, the drummer who provided the backbone of the Rolling Stones' songs for more than half a century, has died. Watts "passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family," his publicist Bernard Doherty said. "Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones, as one of the greatest drummers of his generation." The quiet, elegantly dressed Watts was often ranked with Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and a handful of others as a premier rock drummer, respected worldwide for his muscular, swinging style as the band rose from its scruffy beginnings to international superstardom. He joined the Stones early in 1963 and remained over the next 60 years, ranked just behind Jagger and Keith Richards as the group's longest lasting and most essential members. Watts stayed on, and largely held himself apart, through the drug abuse, creative clashes and ego wars that helped kill founding member Brian Jones, drove bassist Bill Wyman and Jones' replacement Mick Taylor to quit and otherwise made being in the Stones the most exhausting of jobs. The Stones began, Watts said, "as white blokes from England playing black American music" but quickly evolved their own distinctive sound. Watts was a jazz drummer in his early years and never lost his affinity for the music he first loved, heading his own jazz band and taking on numerous other side projects. He had his eccentricities — Watts liked to collect cars even though he didn't drive and would simply sit in them in his garage. But he was a steadying influence on stage and off as the Stones defied all expectations by rocking well into their 70s, decades longer than their old rivals The Beatles. He died in London with his family around him.25th August 2021 – Linux turns 30 - https://www.zdnet.com/article/linus-torvalds-on-linuxs-30th-birthday/ In 1991, Unix was an important but secondary x86 operating system. That year, on August 25, a mild-mannered Finnish graduate student named Linus Benedict Torvalds announced on the Usenet group comp.os.minix that he was working on "a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones." No one knew it, not even Torvalds, but the technology was going to change forever. Thirty years later, Linux rules IT. Almost all major websites -- including Google, Facebook, and Wikipedia -- run on Linux. It's the same with the clouds. Even on Microsoft's own Azure, the most popular operating system is Linux. As for supercomputers, all 500 of the world's fastest 500 supercomputers run Linux. Thanks to Android, Linux is also the most popular end-user operating system. Not bad for a hobby operating system! In those very first days, Linux wasn't formally known as Linux. Torvalds explained, "Linux was my working name, but I never wanted to release it as Linux. Linux was a perfectly good working name, but if I actually used it as the official one, people would think that I am an egomaniac and wouldn't take it seriously. So I chose this very bad name, "Freax," for "Free Unix." Fortunately, the first Linux administrator Ari Lemmk, decided Freax was a silly name too. Hence, he actually named it Linux because he thought this internal project name was Torvalds first choice.Remembrances25th August 1822 – William Herschel - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_HerschelGerman-born British astronomer and composer. He frequently collaborated with his younger sister and fellow astronomer Caroline Lucretia Herschel. Born in the Electorate of Hanover, William Herschel followed his father into the military band of Hanover, before emigrating to Great Britain in 1757 at the age of nineteen. Herschel constructed his first large telescope in 1774, after which he spent nine years carrying out sky surveys to investigate double stars. Herschel published catalogues of nebulae in 1802 (2,500 objects) and in 1820 (5,000 objects). The resolving power of the Herschel telescopes revealed that many objects called nebulae in the Messier catalogue were actually clusters of stars. On 13 March 1781 while making observations he made note of a new object in the constellation of Gemini. This would, after several weeks of verification and consultation with other astronomers, be confirmed to be a new planet, eventually given the name of Uranus. This was the first planet to be discovered since antiquity, and Herschel became famous overnight. As a result of this discovery, George III appointed him Court Astronomer. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and grants were provided for the construction of new telescopes. Herschel pioneered the use of astronomical spectrophotometry, using prisms and temperature measuring equipment to measure the wavelength distribution of stellar spectra. In the course of these investigations, Herschel discovered infrared radiation. Other work included an improved determination of the rotation period of Mars, the discovery that the Martian polar caps vary seasonally, the discovery of Titania and Oberon (moons of Uranus) and Enceladus and Mimas (moons of Saturn). Herschel was made a Knight of the Royal Guelphic Order in 1816. He was the first President of the Royal Astronomical Society when it was founded in 1820. He died at the age of 83 at Observatory House, Windsor Road, Slough Herschel's epitaph is Coelorum perrupit claustra (He broke through the barriers of the heavens).Famous Birthdays25th August 1819 – Allan Pinkerton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_PinkertonScottish–American detective and spy, best known for creating the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Pinkerton first became interested in criminal detective work while wandering through the wooded groves around Dundee, looking for trees to make barrel staves, when he came across a band of counterfeiters, who may have been affiliated with the notorious Banditti of the Prairie. After observing their movements for some time he informed the local sheriff, who arrested them. This later led to Pinkerton being appointed, in 1849, as the first police detective in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. In 1850, he partnered with Chicago attorney Edward Rucker in forming the North-Western Police Agency, which later became Pinkerton & Co, and finally Pinkerton National Detective Agency, still in existence today as Pinkerton Consulting and Investigations, a subsidiary of Securitas AB. Pinkerton's business insignia was a wide open eye with the caption "We never sleep." As the US expanded in territory, rail transport increased. Pinkerton's agency solved a series of train robberies during the 1850s, first bringing Pinkerton into contact with George McClellan, then Chief Engineer and Vice President of the Illinois Central Railroad, and Abraham Lincoln, the company's lawyer. When the Civil War began, Pinkerton served as head of the Union Intelligence Service during the first two years, heading off an alleged assassination plot in Baltimore, Maryland while guarding Abraham Lincoln on his way to Washington, D.C. as well as identifying troop numbers in military campaigns. His agents often worked undercover as Confederate soldiers and sympathizers to gather military intelligence. Pinkerton himself served on several undercover missions as a Confederate soldier using the alias Major E.J. Allen. He worked across the Deep South in the summer of 1861, focusing on fortifications and Confederate plans. This counterintelligence work done by Pinkerton and his agents is comparable to the work done by today's U.S. Army Counterintelligence Special Agents in which Pinkerton's agency is considered an early predecessor. He was succeeded as Intelligence Service chief by Lafayette Baker; the Intelligence Service was the predecessor of the U.S. Secret Service. His work led to the establishment of the Federal secret service. Despite his agency's later reputation for anti-labor activities, Pinkerton himself was heavily involved in pro-labor politics as a young man. Though Pinkerton considered himself pro-labor, he opposed strikes and distrusted labor unions. He was born in Gorbals, Glasgow.Events of Interest25th August 1957- The Invisible Man Vs. The Human Fly premiered in Japan - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0204691/ A star is born! On this day in 1957 (in Japan), The Invisible Man Vs. The Human Fly took to the silver screen for a monster of a pairing! Directed by Mitsuo Murayama, the SciFi/Fantasy starred Ryûji Shinagawa and Yoshirô Kitahara; and here's the plot summary: "A ruthless serial killer with a peculiar method of stalking and killing his victims comes face to face with a police officer turned invisible by a scientific experiment. Who will emerge triumphant?" In the late 1950s, in the United States this film was announced, and stills were published, under the English language title "The Murdering Mite." This film shares part of its Japanese title with the Japanese release of the much better-known 1958 U.S. science fiction film The Fly, which was released in Japan as Fear of the Fly Man (ハエ男の恐怖 Hae Otoko no Kyōfu), though with the 'Fly' in "Fly Man" spelled in katakana rather than kanji characters. While both films feature "fly men," The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly actually predates the latter film by almost an entire year.25th August 1989 – Voyager 2 spacecraft makes its closest approach to Neptune, the last planet in the Solar System at the time, due to Pluto being within Neptune's orbit from 1979 to 1999 - https://www.wired.com/2010/08/0825voyager2-neptune/ Voyager 2 makes its closest encounter with Neptune, passing just 3,000 miles above the cloud tops of the most distant planet in our solar system. The Voyager 2 space probe has been our most productive unmanned space voyage. It visited all four of the outer planets and their systems of moons and rings, including the first visits to previously unexplored Uranus and Neptune. Voyager 2 found four rings and evidence for ring arcs, or incomplete rings, above Neptune. That means all four of the gas giants in our solar system have rings. Neptune's, however, are very meager compared to the magnificent rings around Saturn. In the late 19th century, astronomers thought that an unseen Planet X was influencing the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. The observed positions of the two planets and their calculated positions differed. Among those astronomers convinced of the existence of Planet X was Clyde Tombaugh. In 1930 while scanning areas of the sky for Planet X, he found Pluto. When Voyager 2 flew by Neptune, it took very precise measurements of Neptune's mass and found it to be about 0.5 percent less massive than previous estimates. When the orbits of Uranus and Neptune were recalculated using the more accurate mass figure, it became clear that the imprecise number for Neptune -- and not the gravity of an unseen planet -- had caused the observed orbital discrepancies. After its encounter with Neptune, the spacecraft was rechristened the Voyager Interstellar Mission by NASA to take measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field, plasma and charged-particle environment. But mostly it's searching for the heliopause, the distance at which the solar wind becomes subsumed by the more general interstellar wind.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/Email - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comSupport via Podhero- https://podhero.com/podcast/449127/nerds-amalgamated See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this special episode I share my chat with ALS Ice Bucket Challenge co-founder Pat Quinn who inspired millions before losing his battle to ALS. Pat Quinn was the last of three ALS warriors, Anthony Senerchia, Pete Frates and Pat Quinn to be the first to accelerate the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge while living with ALS. Pat from Yonkers , New York passed away at 37 in November 2020 after a heroic, seven year battle. He fought with positivity and courage and inspired me and all who knew him. Pat helped generate awareness and raise more than $220 million around the world for ALS research through the Ice Bucket Challenge. The campaign had over 20 million videos being created and shared around the world. Pat changed the trajectory of the ALS fight forever. He inspired millions to get involved and care about people who are living with ALS. Even now, his words are inspiring others to face adversity with grace and grit. In this episode you'll hear a partial interview that Pat and I were in the midst of preparing before he passed away. You'll wanna hear his powerful words on how to handle adversity and live our precious lives out. I also catch up with Fernando Vieira CEO of ALS Therapy Development Institute on how the Ice Bucket Challenge advanced ALS research. I'm so grateful to have this message to share with you. Thank you for listening, sharing and creating ALS awareness. Pat would be so grateful as well. On this episode of the Global News podcast Whatever Happened To…?, journalist Erica Vella revisits the story of the ice bucket challenge. In 2014, social media feeds were flooded with videos of people showering themselves in ice cold water; the goal was to raise awareness and money for ALS. Julie Frates’ husband, Pete Frates, was one of the co-creators. “Our good friend Pat Quinn, who has ALS and lives in New York, he was challenged and in that challenge, he also named one of Pete's good friends,” she said. “Pete saw it immediately and thought, okay … everyone's got to get on this right away and I remember sitting down that night at dinner and he directed all of us to go on Facebook and just continually start challenging people and sharing it.” The campaign went viral; celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Jimmy Fallon and Bill Gates joined in on the dare and globally over $220 million dollars was raised. “It was unfathomable,” she said. “It was shocking for us and it was shocking for everyone in the medical community. Everyone who had spent their whole career trying to research this disease; it was kind of like such a huge windfall. It was amazing and overwhelming and completely hard to grasp.” Pete was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2012. The disease weakens muscles and impairs physical functioning. There is no known cure. Erica Vella speaks with the family that started the viral campaign to see what has happened since 2014 and endeavors to answer; did it lead to any positive change?
