When a queer book elevates our own expectations of ourselves and moves us to honor ourselves by saying: we deserve something more.Today we meet Blair Fell and we're talking about the queer book that saved his life: The Persian Boy by Mary Renault.Blair Fell's television work includes Queer as Folk, and the Emmy Award–winning California Connected. He's written dozens of plays including the award-winning plays Naked Will and the downtown cult miniseries Burning Habits. He's a two-time winner of the prestigious Doris Lippman Prize in Creative Writing from the City College of New York. His first novel The Sign For Home was long-listed by the Center For Fiction's First Book Award. His upcoming novel Disco Witches of Fire Island comes out May 6, 2025.Mary Renault was a British lesbian writer famed for her historically precise novels of the ancient world, including The Last of the Wine (1956), Fire From Heaven (1969), and The Persian Boy (1972). US publishers initially refused to publish her novel The Charioteer due to its positive portrayal of homosexuality and its happy ending. It was eventually published in 1959 and was a bestseller. The Persian Boy traces the last years of Alexander's life through the eyes of his lover, Bagoas. Abducted and gelded as a boy, Bagoas was sold as a courtesan to King Darius of Persia, but found freedom with Alexander after the Macedon army conquered his homeland. Their relationship sustains Alexander as he weathers assassination plots. After Alexander's mysterious death, we are left wondering if this Persian boy understood the great warrior better than anyone.Connect with Blairwebsite: blairfell.combluesky: @blairfell.bsky.socialinstagram: @blair.fellOur BookshopVisit our Bookshop for new releases, current bestsellers, banned books, critically acclaimed LGBTQ books, or peruse the books featured on our podcasts: bookshop.org/shop/thisqueerbookBuy your own copy of The Persian Boy: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9780394751016Pre-order Disco Witches of Fire Island (arrives May 6, 2025): https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9798892420341Buy The Sign For Home: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9781982175962Become an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! For January's prompt, to read a book published in a year ending in 3, Becca had us read The Charioteer by Mary Renault. It was published in 1953 and known for being one of the first popularly published novels about positive homosexual romance. Despite some language differences between two Americans in 2023 and a British woman in 1953, we really loved this story. For February's prompt of reading a western or pulp novel, we will first be reading True Grit by Charles Portis (western) and then either Odd Girl Out by Ann Bannon (pulp) or In A Lonely Place by Dorothy B. Hughes (noir). The first two are available on Hoopla, but you can find any at your local bookstore or library and read along with us! In this episode we also mentioned: Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin The City and the Pillar by Gore Vidal The Awakening by Kate Chopin
Hello, this is our first episode of the year! January's prompt for The Bookstore Challenge 2023 is to read a book from a year ending in 3. Corinne's pick is Maud Martha by Gwendolyn Brooks, published in 1953. It's out of print in the US but you can still buy in the UK, and you should! Bernardine Evaristo says it's wonderful and do you need a better endorsement than that? If you want to read along with The Bookstore Challenge 2023, you can find Instagram graphics for your story or grid in this Google Drive folder. You can also join us on The StoryGraph, The Bookstore Challenge 2023. Next time we will be discussing The Charioteer by Mary Renault. You can find it at your local bookstore or library (it's on Hoopla) and read along with us. Website | Patreon

Ajahn Dhammasiha talks about the "Great Renunciation", how the Buddha left the pampered life as prince behind, and set out alone to find freedom from suffering and death: The Buddha's father, King Suddhodhana, had confined his son, the young Bodhisatta, in the pleasure palace, where he tried to keep all suffering away from him. He wished for him not to renounce, but to continue in household life, and to become a most powerful wheelturning emperor. No old or sick persons were ever allowed into his presence, and all flowers were removed before he could see them wilting. However, when the Bodhisatta went on an outing to the pleasure gardens, he encountered a very old man. Having never seen anyone old at all, he enquired from his Charioteer, Channa: "Who is that? What happened to him?" Being informed by Channa, he returned straight back to the palace and started contemplating. "Will I become so old one day as well? What about my beautiful wife Yasodhara? How about my own father and family?" The same happend on similar outings when he encountered a sick person and a dead body, and finally, on the last outing, the Bodhisatta saw a calm and peaceful looking renunciant. He resolved to leave the palace life behind right today, and to become a homeless ascetic himself. He rode out into the Indian Full Moon Night on his white stallion Khantaka, cut of his hair and beard with his sword, and started his spiritual journey. Ajahn Dhammasiha points out that this story is also a powerful metaphor for our own mind. Like the Buddha's father, our own mind tries to hide the realites of old age, sickness and death from ourselves, so that we can continue "living in the pleasure palace" = enjoying the sensual pleasures in life. If we can break out of this delusion, we can set out on a spiritual search, just like the Bodhisatta.https://www.dhammagiri.nethttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJINt0JJBfFm_x0FZcU9QJwhttps://tinyletter.com/dhammagiri/archive

In order to save his brother Sampati shielded his brother burning his wings in the process. They both fell from the sky. Jatayu could not fly for days, while Sampati completely lost the ability to fly. When vanar sena was looking for mata Sita, they bumped into Sampati, living in a cave on the way to Lanka. When Sampati found out about Jatayu's death at the hands of Ravan, he decided to help Shri Ram find mata Sita by pointing them towards Lanka. Learn more about your ad choices. I reserve the right to change my mind, As I learn more than I know. It doesn't mean I can't be trusted, But that I'm willing to grow. We're running the tightrope here between getting in touch with our deepest, personal truth (new Moon in Taurus) and not getting stubbornly fixated on it to the exclusion of hearing others. We are, each of us, a Charioteer, and the more we contemplate the Holy Grail in our lap, the more we see how to best fit into the active life of creation. It won't be long before we set off on our journey into the unknown realms of the future, so best to prepare (know ourselves) well. These days can be stressful as we may feel pulled in many different directions while trying our best to center and meditate on our deepest truth! So again, we are juggling (Gemini) between the past and the future, the inner and the outer, and they all converge in the NOW. So let's follow that sage advice from Ram Dass, and rather than trying to "cure" ourselves and the world which is trying to return to a previous, or "normal" state, we take whatever is being thrown our way and use it to find and connect with Source. Blessings on your journey! Watch out for that Black Moon Lilith getting together with Venus and the North Node. Fear is believing that I am alone, Forgetting that All is One. But if I open and follow my heart, It melts like snow in the sun. ☉ Let's welcome the new Moon in Aries! That beautiful Ram energy represents the beginning of everything new. It's open, spontaneous, wild, and courageous, so let those be keywords for the month. It's simple and straightforward, not convoluted and conniving, so we can also add that. More specifically, we want to add in a touch of self-forgiveness for this week if we try/want something and it doesn't go. We're all just in kindergarten earth so if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Let it go, don't let it get you down. In a way, I'm feeling the energy of the Chariot card in the Tarot, where The Charioteer is gazing down into the Holy Grail in meditative preparation to set off on his journey. It reminds me of my axiom for 2021 in general: "The Year of Initiation in Preparation for Creative Manifestation." The paradox is that we are all alone and setting off on our destinies, AND we are all one, tiny parts of the great big puzzle without which the puzzle is not complete. Mercury coming to Chiron wants to penetrate the mysteries of healing separation while simultaneously adding a new, unique identity to the mix of creation. Perhaps we expand and complete the puzzle of creation by discovering and expressing our unique genius. We gotta break away from the crowd to return with fuel to feed it. Blessings on your genius! Nothing more appropriate than Sir Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" for this week! https://youtu.be/OeQ7huY9mEE And while I'm on Paul, I have to add the song I've been stuck on this week as I'm driving through the southwest: "Heart of the Country" from his album RAM: https://youtu.be/oGaY-fyZl5M I've also been inspired this week by the beautiful artwork of Sandra! She first sent me the drawing of the cord going to heaven (at the end of the video) and then followed it with others. Carol Ferris read’s from "the Magician" and illuminates the intersection of healing, time, and space, weaving in the mythology of Philemon and Baucis as she and Satya explore the union of opposites with Philemon and Baucis, and Elijah and Salome. Satya tracks the feminine in Jung’s "Red Book" as Baucis stands in the kitchen. Carol discusses the coming into form of the yin yang pair of opposites. Jung asks where does one go to learn magic? Carol incorporates the Six Conformations of Chinese Medicine and Satya discusses the history of Jung’s psychology as it leads to Taoism and the union of the opposites. Satya & Carol discuss the Ego-Self Axis, Jedi’s, the Force, Karate Kid, and the importance of practice in connecting to the divine and the rhizome-like nature of the unconscious. Carol discusses the thinker and magician, David Abram. Carol speaks to the Age of Aquarius, The Great Ages (see chart), and when the “I” becomes “We.” Q&A touches on Tecumseh’s Curse, Baucis in the Kitchen, Jung & Quantum Physics, a return to our animal selves, the etymology of anima, and the somatic of Jungian Psychology. Going fast and turning left: racing hasn't changed much in the last 2000 years. But that doesn't mean racing is boring. In this episode, Chris and Laura explore the chaotic fun inherent in the chariot racing game, "Circus Maximus" from Avalon Hill. They discuss ancient Roman life, how games build an intuitive grasp of statistics and probability, and have some book and movie recommendations as well. Games Mentioned: Circus Maximus & Gladiator - Both currently out of print, these companion games from Avalon Hill simulate the excitement and chaos of Roman sporting events. Diplomacy - A game of negotiation and backstabbing as players act the parts of countries prior to World War I. Sleeping Queens - A strategy card game where players need a little luck and some fast thinking to wake the queens placed under a sleeping spell. Sushi Go - A pick and pass card game where players accumulate points as they collect sushi dinners. Outfoxed - A fun, cooperative game that can be played with nearly everyone. Here's a good playthrough video, though there is a small difference in how the Thief Card is presented. It looks like the earlier game used red and green dots, rather than green dots or blank spaces. This is probably an alteration to make the game less confusing for those with red-green color blindness. If you buy a used copy, that may be an issue. Dragonwood - A card and dice based adventure game, Dragonwood is a fun introduction into the elements of roleplaying and card combat games. Books and Movies Mentioned: Ben Hur - The classic epic with its iconic chariot race; also our favorite movie to watch at Easter. The Roman Mysteries - Flavia Gemina is a young sleuth with devoted friends and penchant for getting into trouble in ancient Rome. "The Charioteer of Delphi" is a great companion novel to read when playing Circus Maximus. Can't see the links? Podcatcher turning my painstaking labor into plaintext? Read by alumnus Denny Lane (Delaware, 1957). Nearing the end of term John Corlette explores the nature of Aiglon's ethos through the metaphor of driving, but not being controlled by, three horses: our mind, body and emotions. (Original date of the meditation is not known.)
Atma identified with the Body, Mind & Intellect is the charioteer. The body is the chariot. It has to be dynamic. Desire and enthusiasm are needed in life to act and achieve. Charioteer is the intellect. There are 5 duties of a charioteer. The mind is the reins and the senses are the horses. What is the tuning between the Intellect, Mind & Senses? Sense objects are the path on which the horses tread. Identified with these the Infinite Atma becomes the finite doer and enjoyer. One whose intellect is not discriminative and whose mind is not focussed, the senses of that person will be wild and irredeemable.
In this episode, Amanda and Sarah discuss Major Arcana 7: The Chariot. Sometimes known as the victory card, the Chariot teaches us how to align our will so that we can accomplish our goals. A protective symbol, the Charioteer helps us establish healthy boundaries and tame our fiercest inner (and outer) critics. We talk about the history and evolution of this card, what it can teach us and how to use the card as a tool in our magical practice. Of course, we also ruminate on examples of this card in pop culture, and get into the scary shadow side of the card as well. Libidinous horses abound! Jason Colavito is an author and editor based in Albany, NY. He is internationally recognized by scholars, literary theorists, and scientists for his pioneering work exploring the connections between science, pseudoscience, and speculative fiction. His investigations examine the way human beings create and employ the supernatural to alter and understand our reality and our world. He has published several books including The Cult of Alien Gods: H.P. Lovecraft and Extraterrestrial Pop Culture (Prometheus Books, 2005); Knowing Fear: Science, Knowledge, and the Development of the Horror Genre (McFarland, 2008); and Jason and the Argonauts through the Ages (McFarland, 2014). In 2011, Colavito launched his own line of print-on-demand books collecting rare texts about alternative history, the occult, and speculative fiction. Colavito appeared on Codes & Conspiracies on the American Heroes Channel in 2015 to offer expert commentary on the ancient astronaut theory and its impact on science, pseudoscience, and popular culture. Colavito's research on extraterrestrials and H. P. Lovecraft was also featured on the History Channel in 2009, and he has provided research assistance and consulted on such programs as Secret History of UFOs (NatGeo), Monster Quest (History Channel), Ancient X-Files (NatGeo UK), and William Shatner's Weird or What? (History Television Canada/NatGeo UK). Colavito began debunking fringe science and revisionist history in the web-based magazine Lost Civilizations Uncovered in 2001. Since then, his work has appeared in Skeptic magazine, Humanist Network News, Swift, The Canadian, and TVTome and other outlets. Colavito has also worked as a consultant for major museums, both public and private. In addition to nonfiction writing, Colavito has also authored several short stories. Colavito's speculative fiction has appeared in a number of outlets, including the anthologies 2012 AD (Severed Press, 2010), Elements of Horror (Elements of Horror Press, 2010), and Letters from the Dead (Library of the Dead Press, 2010), as well as magazines such as Twisted Dreams. Colavito holds a Bachelor of Arts from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York where he majored in both anthropology and journalism. A summa cum laude graduate, Colavito was recognized as the Distinguished Graduate in the Social and Behavioral Sciences, and he was made the Jessica Savitch Communications Scholar for his work in journalism. In 2004, Colavito placed his first professionally published article, "Charioteer of the Gods," in Skeptic magazine. Shortly thereafter he sold his first book, The Cult of Alien Gods, to Prometheus Books.

Explore Genesis 15:1, 1 Samuel 3:1, 7-8, 10, 19-21, and Jeremiah 1:4-7,9. Explore the term “Cloud Rider”. In Ugarit texts (1.3.iii.35) we find, "What manner of enemy has arisen against Baal, of foe against the Charioteer of the Clouds?" The biblical writers use this terminology as a polemic strategy. Deuteronomy 33:26 states, "There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help, through the skies in his majesty." Psalm 68:32-34 states, “O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord (YHWH), Selah to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, and whose power is in the skies." Psalm 104:1-3 states, "Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord (YHWH) my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garments stretching out the heavens like a tent. He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind. . ." In Isaiah 19:1 we read, “An oracle concerning Egypt. Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud and comes to Egypt; and the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence, and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them." The Word is used in John 1:1-3, 14, 18. The Angel is associated with Jude 5. Explore Exodus 23:20 and Judges 2:1. The Name is mentioned in John 17:6, 12, 26. Consider the term “Rider on the Clouds”. Daniel 7:13 states, "I saw in the night visions, and behold, upon the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him." Consider Mathew 26:57, 62-65, Isaiah 63:7-11 and Ezekiel 8:2-6. Ezekiel elsewhere recognizes his guide as Yahweh and addresses him as "Lord God" (Ezekiel 9:8; 11:13). Why did God make this foundational concept hard for us to get to? An ancient person would have grasped this concept easier. Consider the Trinity and Benjamin D. Sommer’s text, “The Bodies of God and the World of Ancient Israel”. In Deuteronomy 4:35 we read, “To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him.” (הָאֱלֹהִים) We read in Psalm 82:1, “God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment . . .”
What to look out, and up, for in February. For the beginners this month we take a look at the constellation of Auriga the Charioteer with a trio of open clusters from the Messier catalogue and finishing off with the Flaming Star that originated in Orion’s Belt. Next Jeni rounds up the planets that are visible in December: Jupiter, Mars & Saturn, before taking a look at this month’s moon phases – with a couple of conjunctions with Venus & Mercury and the occultation of star Xi 1 Ceti. Finally we go deep into the universe with an open cluster, a beautiful multiple star system and the vast Rosette Nebula in the constellation Monoceros the Unicorn.
