Today I talked to Kathleen Osberger about her book I Surrender: A Memoir of Chile's Dictatorship, 1975 (Oribis Books, 2023). In 1975, Kathleen Osberger, who'd just graduated from Notre Dame University, flew to Chile to teach in a Catholic school in Santiago. She was assigned to live with several religious women, and when she arrived, was told that they would sometimes shelter dissidents who were wanted by the secret police. This was after the CIA assisted coup that overthrew democratically elected president, Salvador Allende in 1973. Augusto Pinochet then ruled Chile as a dictator, clamping down on unrest, journalists, and critics. Those who tried tried to protect some of these dissidents from detention, torture, disappearance, and death were considered traitors and received the same punishment. Kathy Osberger learned all this, but she still wasn't prepared when the secret police came with a warrant for her arrest, forced her into a car, and handed her a blindfold. They soon let her go, but everyone knew they'd come back, and she had to disappear. Kathleen Osberger earned her B.A. at the University of Notre Dame, an M.A. from Maryknoll School of Theology, and an A.M. from the University of Chicago–School of Social Work Administration. Her life was shaped by volunteer experiences when she lived in San Miguelito, Panamá; Santiago, Chile; Chimbote, Perú and the South Bronx. In 1987 she began a seventeen-year relationship with the Maryknoll Lay Missioners as an instructor in their orientation to mission program and in 1993 she joined the University of Chicago Hospitals—Department of Psychiatry. Her work as a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist has centered on the issues of trauma and torture.  Learn more about your ad choices. They may be one of the world's favourite supplements but, according to a study from earlier this year, more than one in 10 fish oil capsules are rancid. Most of the oil comes from Peruvian anchovetas, a type of anchovy that is also used to feed pigs, poultry and farmed fish. And despite catching more than 4m tonnes a year of anchovetas to cater to the global demand, large industry players want to scale this up even further. In this episode from January 2022, Madeleine Finlay speaks to environment journalist Richa Syal about why so many fish oil pills are rancid, and hears from journalist Dan Collyns in Chimbote, Peru, about how the industry is affecting the local environment and its residents. Most of the oil comes from Peruvian anchovetas, a type of anchovy, which is also used to feed pigs, poultry and farmed fish. And despite catching more than 4m tonnes a year of Peruvian anchovetas to cater to the global demand, large industry players want to scale this up even further. Madeleine Finlay speaks to environment journalist Richa Syal about why so many fish oil pills are rancid, and hears from journalist Dan Collyns in Chimbote, Peru, about how the industry is affecting the local environment and its residents. https://www.makingbetterpod.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Making-Better-04-Richard-Stallman.mp3 Richard Matthew Stallman leads the Free Software Movement, which shows how the usual non-free software subjects users to the unjust power of its developers, plus their spying and manipulation, and campaigns to replace it with free (freedom-respecting) software. Born in 1953, Stallman graduated Harvard in 1974 in physics. He worked at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab from 1971 to 1984, developing system software including the first extensible text editor Emacs (1976), plus the AI technique of dependency-directed backtracking, also nown as truth maintenance (1975). In 1983 Stallman launched the Free Software Movement by announcing the project to develop the GNU operating system, planned to consist entirely of free software. Stallman began working on GNU on January 5, 1984, resigning from MIT employment in order to do so. In October 1985 he established the Free Software Foundation, of which he is president as a full-time volunteer. Stallman invented the concept of copyleft, "Change it and redistribute it but don't strip off this freedom," and wrote (with lawyers) the GNU General Public License, which implements copyleft. This inspired Creative Commons. Stallman personally developed a number of widely used software components of the GNU system: the GNU Compiler Collection, the GNU symbolic debugger (gdb), GNU Emacs, and various others. The GNU/Linux system, which is a variant of GNU that also contains the kernel Linux developed by Linus Torvalds, is used in tens or hundreds of millions of computers. Alas, people often call the system "Linux", giving the GNU Project none of the credit. Their versions of GNU/Linux often disregard the ideas of freedom which make free software important, and even include nonfree software in those systems. Nowadays, Stallman focuses on political advocacy for free software and its ethical ideas. He spends most of the year travelling to speak on topics such as "Free Software And Your Freedom" and "Copyright vs Community in the Age of the Computer Networks". Another topic is "A Free Digital Society", which treats several different threats to the freedom of computer users today. In 1999, Stallman called for development of a free on-line encyclopedia through inviting the public to contribute articles. This idea helped inspire Wikipedia. Stallman is officially a Visiting Scientist at MIT. Free Software, Free Society is Stallman's book of essays. His semiautobiography, Free as in Freedom, provides further biographical information. He has received the following awards: • 1986: Honorary life time membership in the Chalmers Computer Society • 1990: MacArthur Foundation Fellowship • 1990: The Association for Computing Machinery's Grace Murray Hopper Award "For pioneering work in the development of the extensible editor EMACS (Editing Macros)." • 1996: Doctorate honoris causa from Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology • 1998: Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer award • 1999: Yuri Rubinsky Memorial Award • 2001: The Takeda Techno-Entrepreneurship Award for Social/Economic Well-Being • 2001: Doctorate honoris causa from the University of Glasgow • 2002: United States National Academy of Engineering membership • 2003: Doctorate honoris causa from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel • 2003: Honorary professorship from the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería del Perú • 2004: Doctorate honoris causa from the Universidad Nacional de Salta, in Argentina • 2004: Honorary professorship from the Universidad Tecnológica del Perú • 2005: Fondazione Pistoletto prize • 2007: Honorary professorship from the Universidad Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, in Peru • 2007: First Premio Internacional Extremadura al Conocimiento Libre • 2007: Doctorate honoris causa from the Universidad de Los Angeles de Chimbote, in Peru • 2007: Doctorate honoris causa from the University of Pavia

Todos somos marineros (in English, We’re All Sailors) was partly inspired by a workshop in which a group of students spent eight hours discussing the opening line of The Merchant of Venice, and a news story about three Russian sailors left stranded in a Peruvian port due to the sudden bankruptcy of the company they worked for. Writer-director Miguel Ángel Moulet developed a story about just that predicament, a story in which two of the sailors are brothers attempting to find their place in the world, stranded in the coastal city of Chimbote, able neither to go home nor to establish a stable life in Peru, living in limbo, tentatively making connections with the locals. Moulet is a graduate of EICTV, the Cuban film school, where José visits and spends a few days teaching every year, and this is how we come to bring this podcast to you, José having been screened Moulet's debut feature recently and keen to share it with us. We're far from the first to see it, the film being on the festival circuit and already having picked up a number of nominations and awards, including the prestigious FIPRESCI Prize at the Toulouse Latin America Film Festival. A screener was made available for us to watch, and we're so grateful that it was, as it's a beautiful, sensitive film. That line from The Merchant of Venice reads: "In sooth, I know not why I am so sad", and that simple thought informs the tone and themes of Moulet's entire film. Todos somos marineros is a story about isolation, displacement, loneliness, and a kind of all-encompassing, ethereal sadness. The central four characters pair up throughout the film - the two brothers, Tolya, the elder, who feels a degree of paternal responsibility towards his younger brother Vitya; the cafe owner and her delivery boy, Sonia and Tito, who function as a kind of surrogate mother and son; Tolya and Sonia, who are in a loving relationship, and Vitya and Tito, who grow close and whose relationship leads to the film's climax and quiet cliffhanger ending. These pairings are developed and expressed subtly, intelligently, and with heart. The film makes significant use of long takes, both moving and still, and doesn't exactly discriminate between when they should and shouldn't be used. At their best, these shots allow the performances space to breathe, contribute to a delicate, slow pace, or help to convey a rich sense of the characters' environment; at their worst, they distract from or even obscure what the film is showing us. There's also use of a trope in which the film opens on a flashforward we'll return to later, one that effectively establishes a strong mood and mystery but which Mike argues is not purposefully used, and which detracts from the film's later scenes. (At least, that's his argument for why he didn't grasp what was going on in the film's final third.) On the other hand, there is simply gorgeous cinematography by Camilo Soratti, his camera capturing dense, diffuse natural light infusing the air over Chimbote with extraordinarily beautiful colour and texture. And, overall, Moulet's direction exhibits a strong control of tone, the film surging with the sense of sadness and loneliness so crucial to it. There's more besides all of this to discuss, and we take our time to do so. Todos somos marineros is an imaginative, rich debut feature that is deservedly earning praise and winning prizes. There's no predicting if and when it will come to a cinema near you, but if you do get the opportunity to see it, we urge you to jump at it. José spoke to Miguel Ángel Moulet recently, and their conversation (in Spanish) can be heard here: https://notesonfilm1.com/2019/04/21/in-conversation-with-miguel-angel-moulet/ Recorded on 18th April 2019.
