Come and Worship the Holy God Will Stueve Download Psalm 99,The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!2 The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.3 Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!4 The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity;you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.5 Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called upon his name. They called to the Lord, and he answered them.7 In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them; they kept his testimonies and the statute that he gave them.8 O Lord our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings.9 Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy! This morning we sang one of the greatest hymns of the Christian faith, “Holy, Holy, Holy.” It was written by a man named Reginald Heber, who was an Anglican bishop and missionary to India. One source tells us that as Heber wrote this hymn, he was at a loss to come up with words that adequately described the character of God. That even as a gifted poet, he could not improve upon the simple phrase “holy, holy, holy,” the same words that the angels sing to God in heaven right now.Reginald Heber knew that God's holiness was simply beyond what words could describe. And that's what this psalm and this sermon is all about: describing the indescribable holiness of God.Psalm 99 is a call to worship the holy King of the universe. And it concludes a group of “kingship psalms” from 93-100 all celebrating the reign of the Lord. This psalm neatly divides into three parts, and as we work through it, it'll be like examining a diamond, as we look at God's holy character from three different angles with each part concluding with a call to worship the holy God…Verses 1-3 call us to worship God for his holy reign.Verses 4-5 call us to worship God for his holy justice.Verses 6-9 call us to worship God for his holy forgiveness. And we desperately need Psalm 99 today…God's holiness might be the aspect of his character that us fallen sinners understand the least. Many of the biggest problems people have with Christianity today at root, involve a failure to grasp the holiness of God…The problem of hell: how could a good God send anyone to hell? This question rests on the false assumption that people are basically good, that sin is not a big deal, and God should really just get over it.The problem of pluralism: Is there really only one way to God? Can't people just practice whatever religion they want? This question implies that the one true God is not in fact worthy of the worship of all of his creatures. The problem of God's law: The reality that God puts boundaries on our behavior. This is ok. This is not ok. And many respond today, “Nobody can dictate how I live my life except me.” All of these objections to Christianity fail to grasp the reality of God's holiness. And so my prayer for this sermon is that God would awaken in all of us a joyful trembling at the holiness of God. That our hearts would be in tune with the angels in heaven right now who day and night never cease to say,“holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”1. Worship God for his holy reign. That's what verses 1-3 are saying…The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!2 The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.3 Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!The psalmist paints a picture for us here of all peoples and all creation in awestruck wonder before God's majesty. And he uses OT imagery here… He says God “sits enthroned upon the cherubim.” We know from the OT that cherubim functioned as guards of God's holy presence. After Adam and Eve sinned and were banished from the garden, a cherubim with a flaming sword guarded the entrance to God's presence. In the tabernacle and the temple, cherubim were over the mercy seat, symbolizing this same guarding of God's presence. The psalmist reminds us of this image to call to mind the holiness of God…Theologian Steve Wellum says that God's holiness is “an overarching way of describing God's sheer God-ness, which also entails all of his other divine perfections.”God's holiness is not really one attribute among many, but the aspect of God's character that pervades all of his attributes. So God's love is a holy love. His justice is a holy justice.God's holiness speaks to his utter uniqueness, his absolute transcendence, his infinite value, his perfect moral purity, his incomprehensible glory, and his unrivaled beauty. His “sheer God-ness.”As 1 John 1 says,“God is light. And in him is no darkness at all.”Think pure, perfect, blinding light. Think of going out on a hot summer day and having a staring contest with the sun shining in full strength. That's a small glimpse of what holiness is. And as we consider the doctrine of God's holiness, I think we're called to respond in two ways…First, tremble before him. Verse 1 says,“let the peoples tremble!”Likewise, Psalm 2:11 says“serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.”Michael Reeves puts it this way,“Trembling in wonder at God…is the key to true humility, which is not about trying to think less of yourself or trying to think of yourself less but about marveling more at him. A true and happy fear of God simply eclipses self.” So when you read the Bible… remember who's talking to you! Remember Isaiah 66:2, where God says,“this is the one to whom I will look, he who is humble, and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.”And when you pray… remember who you're talking to! Remember Ecclesiastes 5:2, don't “let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth.”My friend Jacob Barwig, who will, Lord willing, be planting King's Church with me, is someone that I would call a “pause-prayer.” A pause-prayer. Maybe some of you know what I mean. Most of us, when we go to pray, we just get right to it… “Dear Lord, thank you for this day…” But not Jacob. When he prays, he begins with a good pause. And I appreciate that about him!The last time we met I asked him like I usually do to close our time in prayer, thanking God for our meeting. And so we bowed our heads, and the pause began…And I'm thinking to myself … You know I really appreciate how Jacob prays, how he approaches God with a humble silence and reverence …And the pause kept going … and eventually Jacob looked up at me and said, “oh, did you want me to pray?”… That time, it was a miscommunication. But most of the time, Jacob helps me remember who I'm talking to when I pray! The point is: our lives should be marked by a happy fear. A joyful trembling at the Holy King who reigns, who is great in Zion, who is exalted over all the peoples! The second way we're called to respond to God's holiness: Be holy as he is holy.1 Peter 1 says,“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.”What a high calling! Be holy as God is holy! Be like God!And as we examine our own lives, it is easy to get discouraged by our lack of progress in the faith. It is easy to only see our failures to measure up. And paradoxically, the more we grow in our faith, the more we see just how holy God is, and how much we fall short of his glory! But as Robert Murray Mc'Cheyne once said,“For every one look at yourself, we must take ten looks to Christ.”Remember what Christ has done for you. We don't strive for holiness out of duty, but from a desire to please the One who loved us and gave himself for us! Let gratitude for the gospel drive you to holiness. Let Jesus's done be the fuel for your doing. And be encouraged that your growth in holiness is not something you do on your own. This is a work that God is doing in you. And that he has promised to complete for those who are in Christ. As we read in Romans 8, “those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.”If you have trusted in Christ, if you belong to him. You are going to be like him one day. Blameless, spotless, holy. Let us remember that as we strive to be holy, even as God is holy. And this brings us to point two… 2. Worship God for his holy justice.Look with me at verses 4-5:The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity;you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.5 Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!As we turn the diamond of God's holy character, the psalmist shows us that God's holiness is demonstrated in his justice. We have had countless rulers and kings throughout history. And much of that story can be described with the phrase might makes right. In other words, whoever is the biggest and the strongest gets to be king, regardless of whether they're good or evil. Not so with the Lord. For the Lord, as one commentator says,“his is a might that loves what is right.”It's the King in his might who loves justice!Recently, I've been reading through the story of David in 1 & 2 Samuel. It's an absolutely epic narrative. But every time I read through it, I have the same roller-coaster experience …I see David's promising beginning as a humble shepherd boy, a man after God's own heart, who defeats Goliath against all odds. Then we see David the virtuous warrior on the run, who shows mercy to Saul and who is victorious in every battle because the Lord is with him. Then we see David enthroned as King, subduing all enemies under his feet and expanding the kingdom of God's reign … and we think … what could possibly go wrong? This is the guy! This is God's holy King! And then wham! 2 Samuel 11, where David sins spectacularly as he takes another man's wife and kills a faithful soldier … and the slow downfall of his kingdom begins. And after reading David's life, we say, “Oh for the perfect King! Oh that we would have a King that does not sin, who is not corrupted by power!”The Lord Jesus is that perfect, holy King. For us sinful human beings, power corrupts. Not so with Jesus. He is all-powerful and incorruptible. Perfect in power, perfect in love, perfect in purity. And every ruler that disappoints, every pastor that falls, every leader that stumbles, should cause our hearts to long for the absolutely perfect reign of King Jesus. Don't we long for the return of our King? Don't we long for him to right every wrong? To make all things new?For when Christ comes to judge the living and the dead, he will come in holy justice. So we can take comfort. As we live in a world full of sin and injustices, that seemingly go unpunished. We know that on the last day there is not one wrong that will not be righted. Every sin will be accounted for and justly punished, either on the cross or in hell. And we will worship God for this, just like the saints cry out in Revelation 19,“Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for his judgments are true and just; for he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality, and has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”In heaven, among the endless reasons we will have to praise God, we will praise him for his holy justice. We see this in the life of Charles Spurgeon…As his mother prayed for years for him to come to Christ, she said, “Now, Lord, if my children go on in their sins, it will not be from ignorance that they perish, and my soul must bear a swift witness against them at the day of judgment if they lay not hold of Christ.”She's saying, I love you my dear son, but if you continue to reject Christ, I will fully agree with God's just judgment against you on that day. That is a heart that treasures the holy justice of God. And that's what this psalm calls us to.Psalm 99 calls us to worship God for his holy reign. To worship him for his holy justice. And lastly…3. Worship God for his holy forgiveness.Look at verses 6-9 with me:Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called upon his name. They called to the Lord, and he answered them.7 In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them; they kept his testimonies and the statute that he gave them.8 O Lord our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings.9 Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy!In these verses, Moses, Aaron, and Samuel stand for the priesthood, which was the provision made for sin under the Old Covenant. When God's people disobeyed, these men called upon God to have mercy. And God both graciously forgave and justly disciplined his people. And of course, the daily sacrifices of bulls and goats, and the fallible priests of Moses, Aaron, and Samuel point us to the New Covenant, and our great High Priest, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us once and for all.As Hebrews 9 puts it, 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.The God of holy love who gave his one and only Son, that whoever would believe in him would not perish but would have eternal life.If you're not a Chistian, know that your days are numbered. Your death has already been determined by the sovereign God of the universe. And after death, comes judgment where you will stand face to face with your Maker. Have you called upon him yet? Are you trusting in the Lord Jesus and his work on the cross for the forgiveness of your sins? Psalm 99 tells us that God is a forgiving God. He does not forgive everyone. But he forgives every person who calls upon his name. So turn from your sin, and turn to Christ. And he will abundantly pardon you. He will cast your sins into the depths of the sea. He will separate your sins from you as far as the east is from the west. Call upon him today! Embrace his forgiveness today! And if you are a believer here today: Cherish the forgiveness of God! That through the blood of Christ we get to draw near to the perfectly holy God. That all-consuming Fire! We get to come before his throne! Before the throne of God above,I have a strong and perfect pleaA great High Priest whose name is love, who ever lives and pleads for me.The more we understand the holiness of God, the more we will cherish his forgiveness. And the more we cherish his forgiveness, the more we will walk in joyful, trembling, awestruck obedience to our King.As Psalm 130 says,“If you O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.”May we all cherish his forgiveness today.Let's pray…

How to fight against Christian Hypocrisy. A lack of the fear of God is at the root of Chistian hypocrisy. Cultivating a fear of God in our lives is the remedy for fighting against this sin. Thankfully, hypocrisy is a sin that we can and must confess to God. It is a sin that can be forgiven in Christ. We can repent,… The post The Remedy for Hypocrisy, Part 2 | Tearing the Mask Off Hypocrisy appeared first on Pillar of Truth Radio.

On the first Christmas, an angel appeared to some shepherds who were keeping watch over their flocks at night. We are told that at the angels appearing, the shepherds were terribly frightened. The angel announced to the shepherds: And so the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger (Luke 2:1012). The Christmas story does not begin with the shepherds, or with the angels visit to Mary with the words: Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end (Luke 1:31-33). The story of Christmas began long before the promise made to Marys fianc, Joseph: Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins (Matt. 1:20b-21). The story of Christmas begins in Genesis 1:1 with the words: In the beginning. It involves an antagonist (the devil), it is all about a hero (God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit), and it is about our need to be rescued (we have a sin problem). The story of Christmas is a story that transforms unlike any other story; it is a story identified by one word in the Bible, and that word is, Gospel which means, good news. Of this good news, the apostle Paul wrote: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Rom. 1:16). The Christmas story is about the promised savior born to be kingthe Lion of the Tribe of Judah from whom, The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the rulers staff from between his feet (Gen. 29:10). Christmas is the ancient promise that the Son of David would be unlike any other king in that God would, establish the throne of his kingdom forever (2 Sam. 7:13). The coming King who would save His people from their sins would be Immanuel (Isa. 7:14)God with us. What is the Helmet of Salvation? Like the soldiers shield, the helmet could be taken of and put back on. The helmet of the Roman soldier was made of bronze and had cheek pieces to provide protection to his head. Like the breastplate of righteousness, Paul draws his language from Isaiah 59:17, He put on righteousness like a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on His head; and He put on garments of vengeance for clothing and wrapped Himself with zeal as a cloak. If you recall from my sermon on the breastplate of righteousness, the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53 who was, pierced for our offences, and was crushed for our wrongdoings is the Divine Warrior of Isaiah 59, which begins with these words: Behold, the Lords hand is not so short that it cannot save; nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear (v. 1). The One who is able to save is the One to Whom righteousness and salvation truly belongs. When redemption and righteousness was beyond the reach of sinful humanity, Immanuel put on righteousness like a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on His head and was born of a virgin to save us from our sins. But what does it mean to be saved from our sins, and is salvation something that can be taken up and put off like a helmet? To answer those questions we must answer what salvation is. Salvation literally means, preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin, or loss. In the strictest and most biblical sense, salvation is something that has happened in the past, but it is also happening in the present, and yes... it is also something that will happen in the future. In other words, Jesus came to save his people from their sins so that they can be saved from the past, the present, and in the future, from the full curse of sin. How so? Well, think about what was announced: Jesus came to save His people from their sins. When Adam and Eve sinned, all of creation was brought under a curse, and that curse includes not only our propensity to sin against God, but also death and the vandalizing of a peace with God all of humanity was intended to enjoy. Here is what the Bible says: Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all mankind, because all sinned... (Rom. 5:12). So, when it comes to our salvation, Timothy Keller said, The Bible says every Christian stands in the middle of three tenses of their salvation. You cant understand the glory and the beauty of it unless you see it. In fact, you wont be able to understand the Scripture and you wont be able to understand whats happening to you if you dont understand.[1] We stand in the past tense of our salvation: You have been saved from the penalty of sin and pardoned from your guilt and now have been covered under the righteousness of Christ and are justified before a holy God (1 Pet. 3:18). We stand in the reality that we have been saved from the penalty of sin! We stand in the present tense of our salvation: You are being saved in the sense that God is changing you through the power of His Holy Spirit. The evidence of your nature to sin is still there and the struggle against your own sin is very real, but each moment that you move closer to death on this side of eternity is one step closer to Christlikeness. This is the fight I was talking about last week. In this present life you, Christian, fight the good fight of the faith and by doing so, we take hold of the eternal life to which you have been called (1 Tim. 6:12). We stand in the reality that we are being saved from the power of sin! We stand in the future tense of our salvation: Because we have been saved from the penalty of sin and we are being saved from the power of sin because Jesus, as the Divine Warrior of Isaiah 59, is able and will indeed rescue us from all sin. The third verse in the carol, Joy to the Word, rightly states: No more let sins and sorrows grow,Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make his blessings flowFar as the curse is found. Jesus came to save us from our sins in the sense that He will make his blessings flow as far as the curse is found, and on that day: Death will be swallowed up in victory (1 Cor. 15:54), what is mortal will be swallowed up by life (2 Cor. 5:4), sorrow and singing will flee away (Isa. 51:11), every tear will be wiped away (Rev. 21:1-4), and all things will be made new (Rev. 21:5). We stand in the reality that we will be saved from the presence of sin... forever and will receive a better and more glorious Eden! The salvation that Jesus came to deliver is not something we take off and put on again, so what then is the helmet of salvation? According to 1 Thessalonians 5:8, the helmet of salvation is the hope of our salvation: But since we are of the day, lets be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.Because we are saved, being saved, and will be saved... we live in the hope of our salvation no matter what the enemy launches at us or does to us, the night is almost gone, and the day is near (Rom. 13:12). How Do You Take Up the Helmet of Salvation? To take up the helmet of salvation is to live in the reality that this mortal life is not the end and that you are now, and forever will, remain a child of the living God! The helmet of salvation protects your head, it protects your mind, it protects your line of sight so that you can see the hope that is yours in Christ. When things in life seem to go south, when this life is shortened by disease, when this worlds resources are stripped away, when the proverbial rug is pulled from underneath, and when it seems that all in this world is lost... you can respond with gospel-centered hope: For our momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison... (2 Cor. 4:17). The helmet of salvation is the assurance of our salvation! Listen, there are two dangers that every person faces if they are a part of any Bible teaching and gospel centered church. The first danger is to believe that you are a Christian when you are not. If you believe that you can believe in Jesus with your mind for the salvation of your soul with little consequence to the way you are living your life today, then you may not be a genuine Christian. True saving faith is to believe and trust that Jesus life, death, and resurrection is enough for the salvation of your soul; the evidence that you genuinely believe and trust in Jesus as your savior will be evidenced in your standing in your past salvation, present salvation, and hope in your future salvation. Do not forget Ephesians 2:8-10! You were saved by grace through faith in Jesus, and the purpose for your salvation is stated in verse 10, For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. Genuine saving faith in Jesus will be evidenced by a changing life that looks more and more like Jesus life over the years. The second danger you face in the local church is that the enemy can get you to doubt your salvation. If the enemy can get you to doubt your salvation successfully, he will have a better chance of tempting you to live closer to your sin rather than closer to Jesus as your savior. When you take up the helmet of salvation, you stand in the shoes of the gospel of peace, with your identity in Christ firmly belted around your waist, the righteousness of Christ securely fastened over your chest, so that you can take up your biblically saturated faith. When the devil attempts to undermine your salvation, you can take up your helmet of salvation knowing that only because of Jesus, there is no condemnation for you (Rom. 8:1)! When you take up your helmet of salvation in the enemys presence, you do so with confidence, knowing: ...that He who began a good work among you will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus (Phil. 1:6). When the attacks come and the devil or your flesh is all up in your face to tempt you to doubt the sufficiency of Christ, you take up your helmet of salvation with the assurance of 2 Corinthians 4:7-9, But we have this treasure in earthen containers, so that the extraordinary greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed... (2 Cor. 4:79). How do you know that the salvation Jesus provided is enough? The One born to save His people from their sins is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace promised long ago (Isa. 9:6-7). He is the promised King whose, times of coming forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity (Micah 5:2). The One born King of the Jews is He who was declared long before His birth through the virgin Mary: I am the first and the last, and there is no God besides Me (Isa. 44:6; Rev. 1:17-18). Jesus can save because He is the righteous Branch of David who is called, Yahweh Our Righteousness (Jer. 23:5-6). He is Him who is, the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation... by Whom all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions, or rulers, or authoritiesall things have been created through Him and for Him (Col. 1:15-16). The salvation Jesus provided is enough because, while He existed in the form of God as the Divine Son, He humbled Himself, by taking the form of a bond-servant and being born in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death: death on a cross (see Phil. 2:1-11). This is why we can have every confidence that Ephesians 1:7-8 is all that we need for the hope of our salvation: In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our wrongdoings, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us. So, in light of all that Jesus is and all that he did to secure your salvation, who are you, Chistian? You are chosen by God before the foundation of the world (1:4-6)! Who are you Christian? You are redeemed as a child of God by the blood of His own Son... namely Jesus (1:7-12)! Who are you Christian? You are sealed by the Holy Spirit as a child of the living God until the day when redemption is finally complete (1:13-14). You can have all the confidence that Jesus is enough because He alone is the Divine Warrior qualified to live the life you could not live for the purpose of dying a death you deserved! Jesus is your righteousness, and He is your salvation! On December 4th, I read something Thomas Watson wrote that Jonathan Gibsons O Come, O Come, Emmanuel included in his devotional. When it comes to what our salvation means, Watsons words seem to capture the beauty and magnitude of the Jesus who came to save his people from their sins: He was poor that he might make us rich. He was born of a virgin that we might be born of God. He took our flesh that he might give us his Spirit. He lay in the manger that we might lie in paradise. He came down from heaven that he might bring us to heaven... that the Ancient of Days should be born,--that he who thunders in the heavens should cry in the cradle,--that he who rules the stars should suck the breast,--that a virgin should conceive,--that Christ should be made of a woman which himself made,--that the branch should bear the vine,--that the mother should be younger than the child she bore, and the child in the womb bigger than the mother,--that the human nature should not be God, yet one with God: this was not only amazing but miraculous. If you a Christian, Jesus is the hope of your salvation for He is the helmet of your salvation. If you are not a Christian, you can receive Him as the Hope of your salvation by surrendering your life to Him as your Savior. [1] Timothy J. Keller, The Timothy Keller Sermon Archive (New York City: Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 2013).
Full Armor of God - Get your Helmet on.. Satan will without a doubt attack your mind witch will have devastating consequences on your heart. And you or I will not have res. Have you ever met believers who are always restless and nervous? I know that if you dig deeper into their lives you will find very little personal Bible study and repentance. Oh they may to church and listen to sermons. They may listen to Christian music, they may pray, they may have Chistian friends, this is all good. But, if we neglect personal Bible study where we are seek to do God's will, letting God speak to us through the word of God via the Holy spirit. Taking time out of our day to know what God says. If we fail to do this, Satan and his demons will have us as an easy target. I myself have to be prepared everyday lest I give the devil a foothold. We will not stand in the spiritual battle without Christ. Ignore Scripture in your personal life would be disastrous. Notice what Paul says back in Ephesians 6:11 and vs 13 – Put on the whole armor of God. Not just par or some of the armor but the whole. The whole. The whole. We are not suited up for battle with the sword of the spirt which is the word of God. If we are partially dressed. When Satan comes we must have the word of god at the ready.

Trying to Follow God in the FleshLiving the Chistian life is hard, even for the most committed. Why? Because it is a life of surrender, of giving all to Him and allowing Him to live His life through us. And when we attempt that, our flesh, our independence, screams in rebellion. There is no way to live the life of faith in the flesh. No way to manifest the fruits of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23), without the Spirit. Or, when attacked unjustly, to turn the other cheek out of sheer determination and the force of your will (Matt. 5:39). It cannot be done, long term, no matter how hard you try. After all, the Spirit and the flesh are at war with each other and only one can win (Gal. 5:16-17).Josiah became king of Israel at the ridiculously young age of eight. He must have been taught properly, because by the time he was a young man, he took great, and unpopular strides to right the wrongs committed by previous kings and approved by the people. For in the eighth year of his reign (when he was 16), while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his father David; and in the twelfth year (when he was 20) he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the wooden images, the carved images, and the molded images. They broke down the altars of the Baals in his presence, and the incense altars which were above them he cut down; and the wooden images, the carved images, and the molded images he broke in pieces, and made dust of them and scattered it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. He also burned the bones of the priests on their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.(2 Chr. 34:3-4).Not bad for a man in his early twenties who had never read a single word of Scripture and did not know God personally. He was serving God the best he knew how, with no personal knowledge of the God whom he was serving. Much like many in the church today. But then everything changed for Josiah. He read the Bible for the first time.Knowing the God You ServeYou know the rest of the story. Hilkiah the priest found the Word of God in the house of the Lord when they were doing repairs, probably the first five books of Moses. The Law. Boring stuff for much of the church today. But for Josiah, it was like discovering a great treasure.Notice what this young king did when he discovered the part of Scripture we seldom even read. Then the king sent and gathered all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. The king went up to the house of the LORD, with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem the priests and the Levites, and all the people, great and small. And he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant which had been found in the house of the LORD – 2 Chronicles 34:29-30.Did you get that? He read “all” the words of the Book of the Covenant. And all means just that, all. Plus, Josiah saw Scripture as a covenant, a contract, between God and man. How many of us think that way today? Then the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD, to follow the LORD, and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book – 2 Chronicles 34:3.So Josiah made his own covenant to the Lord. And it was a covenant of faith, action, and obedience. But he wasn't finished. He also made all those with him do the same. So welcome to the remnant revolution. I call it the circle of worship. And I don't know if there's a real meaning to it, but I just envision God imparting to you, you write it down, you come together with maybe a couple people or yourself, you put it together, you perform it. I join in on that. And we all praise back to God. So it's like, he's, he's like, here, Greg, I've got something I want you to sing to me. And when you do that, everybody joins in, and it's just a circle of His love to you. To us back to him. That's one of the best teaching points about worship songwriting that I've ever heard. So at our next songwriting seminar, Gary, could you come speak? Yeah, that'd be glad to know. You'd only speak for three minutes unless you have other great. No, but no, seriously, the the circle that you described, that really is how you have to think of it now. There is where's my notes here? You know, there is, you know, there's songwriting craft involved, and not anybody can write a song yourselves, so I shouldn't send you what I've written down then. Well, no, it's not that. But my reading glasses on because I am of an unknown age, over 40 unknown age. Alright, so here, here's an example. You know, during this time of Coronavirus, and all of the shutdowns, you know, all of my all of my touring income, which is a substantial part of how I take care of my family, all of that those shows are on hold, all of that income is gone. And I don't know when it will come back. And, you know, this presents a sudden, difficulty. And at first, I was afraid, but not in a way where I would go, Oh, I'm afraid, you know, let's look up three scriptures against fear. It was more like, what am I going to do? You know, but behind all that was fear? Well, you know, some, you know, some, yes, some 34. You know, I saw the Lord, I believe this is verse four, Psalm 34, I sought the Lord, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. And that song begins, I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise will continually be in my mouth. And it's like, Okay, wow, how do I bless the Lord at all times, because that's what the Word says to do. And God is worthy of praise at all times. He has done so much good in our life, that when you're faced with something that suddenly bad, you can't. You can't forget that God has been good to you, and He will be good to you because he is good. So I had to kind of just over a period of days, just keep bringing this to the Lord, looking for answers. But mostly just like the psalm I sought the Lord and He answered me and he delivered me from all my fears. And so I took Psalm 91, which would be familiar to you know, people who studied about fear, you know, it would be familiar, and I just felt like I needed to sing it. And it ended up becoming a song because I brought it to two other writers that I've written with a lot, I brought it to the brought what I had to them, and together, we made it a full song. But really, I didn't start out saying, I want to write a worship song. For people to sing. I was simply saying, I need to sing Psalm 91, he that dwells in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. And I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge. He is my refuge in Him, I will trust and the song goes on, and basically talks about every kind of danger you would ever face and just let you know that God will protect you. And so I just wrote a melody to it. I just took the actual words of Scripture and wrote a melody to it and I sang it over And over and over again. And I came back to it, you know, every day, for a period of days, and after a few days, I felt like the Lord said, you know, play this for this other songwriter in our church. And I did. And he said, Yeah, I think, I think I may have an idea for chorus for that. And then I got, I got with a third writer, and we all got together, and we wrote it. And it became a song called under the shadow of you. And it's beautiful song. It's gonna be great when we get to have our choir on it. But, you know, I it just it sounded something like this. I'll just play a brief bit of if that's all right. I completed the circle, but because I got with other writers, in that case, and collaborated. But um, it just started as something that I needed. And so what the way he described that, that's a great way to describe it. And along the way, you have to, you know, have that songwriting gift from the Lord, you have to have developed your songwriting craft, then you have to have a commitment to collaboration. Because, you know, there's, there are things that God wants to speak through us individually. But usually, there's someone we're supposed to collaborate with, because God is speaking to his people. And if you notice, like a lot of the hit worship songs. They've got two and three, four riders on that. So yeah, and I don't know. I mean, we're in Music City, we're in Nashville. So this is the place for the I've lived here all my life. But it looks like to me, it's turned into the millennial capital of the world. And all the churches that gravitate towards that audience. Nothing wrong with that, but I mean, very vibrant, young groups. And there was the song, you know, the song The Blessing by Coby Cody Barnes. And that's a song that, you know, you just look and they talk about how it started and all that. But it's gone worldwide, which is amazing, because other churches have picked it up those they're blessing UK, there's blessing South Africa, blessing Pittsburgh, and they're all you know, in this time that we're in, you know, we haven't lost the car, because now the car's gone into multiple phases singing on a computer screen, which I think is pretty cool. How do you see that? That way that now, churches have come together, they're worshiping, they're, they're feeding off of one another, you know, somebody writes a song, like a pick it up. And it just, it seems like some anointed movement of whether it's a song or, you know, a couple of different songs or whatever. But, you know, I guess, looking at that we would we tend to get pigeon framed and saying, well, that's worship, you know, look at that worship. Well, in a way it is because we're all singing to God, if it's scripturally based, and so how does that how do you think church or worship is going to change or is it going to change because of the way we're doing things now? I don't know. I don't Greg Hagan 10:02 feel like I have a good sense of, I'm still, I'm still trying to understand how God wants to use me with where things are at. So I don't really have a good sense of necessarily where it's going. But I know that what's amazing about God is the 1000s and 1000s. And that just in the English language alone, think about how many 1000s and 1000s of good and useful songs have been written through the centuries. It's amazing. And it seems like in every awakening, every revival, every significant gospel movement, the people that really believe that movement, usually write hymns as well along with their messages and things like that. And you know that the hands that really stand the test of time, usually are songs that come out of revivals or awakenings, or, you know, gospel, gospel movements. And so I think that in our day, we just have to look at, you know, not just what is a good worship song? But what is God doing or desiring to do through our generation? And when I say generation, I'm Generation X. I don't mean just Generation X, I mean, all of us alive at the same time, this generation of generations. You know, what is God doing right now, because it's not, you know, the last great awakening that I believe the scripture prophesies before the end. It's, it's not going to be just young people, you know, it's not going to be just millennials. It's not going to be just the old the wise, you know, it's going to be much like you saw on the day of Pentecost, and where the Apostle Peter is explaining to the crowd, this is what the prophet Joel prophesied old, young men, women, servants, you know, not just not just the wealthy and the elites, but even down to the serving classes, everybody. This is what was prophesied by the prophet Joel, and what happened on the day of Pentecost, as big as that was the prophecy of Joel, of an outpouring of the spirit in the latter days, there's another one yet to come before the very end. And because Jesus said, this gospel will be preached in the whole world as a witness, and then the end will come. And we're not there yet. We're not at a point where, where we really have, you know, preach the gospel to the whole world. The early disciples, they certainly reached their known world in their day, and saw amazing results. But that's been 2000 years, man. So what is what is Jesus doing through our generation? And what are the songs that need to come out of it? So if you're, if you're trying to find out, where's worship going, I would ask, What is God desiring to do in this generation? Is there a great awakening? Is there a great outpouring of a spirit? Is there a great gospel publication that is going to go worldwide, and the songs are going to flow out of that there's always songs written kinda like, you know, that that warrant attached to big movements, that always happens, but but really look at the movement of the spirit in the earth and and know that that's where the worship. It's good, it's good. Well, that's, I was listening to the pasture pastor in the UK that organized the blessing UK, which is 65 churches came together. And he was just talking about, he heard of it from the saint, I think it's the Pittsburgh blessing where they just went on, created it and, I mean, it was organized so quickly because it spoke to just God blessing his people. And it was interesting to hear his story, you know, on the other side of the pond, as they say, to hear that, that, you know, that side of the world is catching is got some of the same sentiments and thoughts of where we're at church was essentially in the here. Or Greg, I think it's about wraps up our Tom here in a, you know, is there any last word you can give us with just looking at worship and how we are to carry on what what? Something that might help us to kind of keep that in frame. When you were talking one quick question, though. You were talking about hymns and worships our homes a little different than what? Because I'm thinking in my mind a worship song. Well, that's uh huh. You know, you got the guitar, you got the piano, that's worship. But when we sing, you know, some of the hymns that we've done, that just that just brings back some, some good old feelings, too. Are we writing hams today? Yes, are we are I'm just missing where the hymns are being written. We are writing hymns today. And I think, to define what is a hymn, it's kind of like you either need to go real specific or very broad. And I can do both of him quite simply, and very specifically, is just a poem set to music. So a hymn is a poem about God set to music. But if you kind of go with Ephesians, chapter five, verse 18, to 20, give us a really well-rounded prescription for New Testament worship. It says, number one, don't be drunk with wine, I think that's, that's a great place to start worship. So it starts, you know, don't be drunk with wine, because that is wasteful, or uses a fancy word dissipation, but it just means you're wasting your time. God has something better, instead of being drunk, be filled with the Spirit, singing or speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, making melody in your heart to God, and giving thanks always at all times, for in every situation, to God in the name of Jesus. So psalms means the actual, scriptural songs. So worship, dive into the songs, read them, speak them, sing them, set them to music, use them as part of your worship, and then hymns. hymns, I think, are songs that are written that are theologically accurate, that can stand the test of time, even when musical styles change. musical styles change quickly. And then spiritual songs to me mean two things. Number one, it means songs that are very fresh and current, like, bless the blessing, like a raise a Hallelujah, things that are very fresh and current, because they speak by the Spirit to something that's right now, you may not sing them want to sing them every day for six years, you may wear that out because they're kind of turns a corner and the spirit is speaking, some new things. So spiritual songs are our fresh, current songs that speak to immediate situations. But spiritual songs are also songs, that as we're baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit, He gives us a vocabulary of praise that is unique. And that is very specific. So we can sing whether in the secret place or if properly LED, we can sing in the gathering place spontaneous songs. So you see, with multiple different churches that do recordings, you know, they'll have their prepared song, right, and then they'll have a spontaneous after that. And so, you know, I think Ephesians tells us psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, and that keeps us well rounded. And so I would just say, kind of as a parting thought. A lot of people seem like they know a lot about worship, and they have a lot to say about worship. Then you can get bogged down in all the details of how much there is to know. But just remember this. Worship is loving God, with your whole life, in everything you do. The Bible can tell you ways to do that. ways that are pleasing and honorable to God. But don't make worship more complicated than it is. It simply is my life, Romans 12 123 surrendered to God as a living sacrifice. Everything I have belongs to him, although I belong to him. My future belongs to him, my life and my time is in his hands. So he's the Lord. And I'm glad and blessed to be part of his people. He is my father. I'm glad I'm blessed to be this child. And Jesus is my Lord and King and I am honored to follow in everything. So don't make it more complicated. Amen. All right. Well, Greg, I appreciate you really taking the time to talk to me about worship. It's been wonderful. We appreciate it. Thank you, Greg. And that'll do it for this episode. Until next time.
