Today, I'm going to tell you about 7 foods to avoid, along with some healthy alternatives. 1. Liquid sugar Soda, juice, and high-sugar beverages deplete your body's vitamin and mineral reserves and contribute to insulin resistance. If you like soda, try Zevia zero-sugar soda instead! 2. Processed cheese Pasteurized cheese products can't be called cheese if they contain less than 51% cheese. Processed cheeses typically contain skim milk, canola oil, milk protein concentrate, modified food starch, whey protein, maltodextrin, preservatives, and salt. Choose real cheese instead! 3. Protein bars Many protein bars are worse than candy bars! They're often made with soy protein isolates and casein, and can contain 30 to 47 grams of sugar per bar! This number doesn't include the starches, which are also sugar. Protein bars are usually sweetened with highly processed sweeteners such as rice syrup, corn syrup, and tapioca syrup. Some are sweetened with sucralose, an artificial sweetener made from a chlorine compound. Try boiled eggs, cheese, and meat jerky for quick protein. 4. Seed oil mayonnaise Almost every mayo available lists soy oil as its first ingredient. Soy oil is a seed oil that's highly processed using solvents like hexane. It's high in omega-6s, which can be highly inflammatory. Look for mayo that is made with avocado oil and zero seed oils. Chosen Foods mayo and Primal Kitchen mayo are much better options. 5. Sweetened, flavored yogurt Seventy percent of the yogurt people buy is sweetened, flavored yogurt. This yogurt contains more sugar per ounce than ice cream! It also contains artificial colorings and flavorings. Opt for plain whole-fat grass-fed yogurt from A2 protein cows. For an even better option, try whole-fat kefir from grass-fed cows, sheep, or goats. 6. Soy protein Soy protein is a cheap, heavily processed protein found in many foods. It negatively affects your gut and liver. Opt for whole protein sources such as meat, eggs, fish, and seafood. 7. Modified starches Starches are chains of sugars, often used as fillers. Starches cause a more significant spike in blood sugar than sugar! Consume natural starch from butternut squash, beets, plantains, and purple potatoes.

Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, Odette Cressler is a mental health advocate and account specialist at Chosen Foods. Odette has called San Diego home for the past 12 years and shares a home with her husband, two kids and two dogs. On this episode of Not a Parenting Podcast, Odette shares her journey in recovery from an eating disorder and discusses life with clinical depression. Now, she uses her free time to help others in recovery and those struggling with mental health issues including via her former podcast the Recovery Elevator and managing Chris Powell's new show: I Needed That. Listen to her episode now and check out her Q&A below: What makes San Diego such a special place to raise kids for you? I am from Guadalajara. Mexico is a beautiful country, however, growing up I did not have access to clean and amazing public parks, museums, public beaches, a two-hour drive to the desert or the mountains [like I do here in San Diego]. I have been in San Diego for 12 years and continue to discover pieces of it as well as places that are nearby. We took the kids hiking in Pine Valley a few weeks ago, we had never been; so cool feeling like you can travel within your city. What are the greatest joys and challenges of balancing family and a career? Being present with the task at hand vs. multitasking. Also, fulfilling my own emotional needs as well as having some awareness of what each of my family members needs and being able to connect to that. Figuring out the logistics of both working parents plus kids with each their individual schedules. I am super grateful to have a partner that is a teammate in parenting. We have to strategize and make sure that we can handle everyone's activities and expectations. For me, I fully believe that going after my goals and dreams is the best role modeling that I can do for my kids. It's easy to put things on the back-burner when they aren't urgent but I really want to make sure that my kids witness a mom that is living and pursuing her passions. I am an introverted-extrovert, I definitely recharge when I am on my own; sometimes it is challenging finding pockets of time to recharge when I feel like there is so much to do. It's super important to me to communicate efficiently with my kids and my partner when I am feeling burnt out so that they can understand where I am at. My kids are young but they 100 percent understand when I tell them "I am out of spoons" and need to go to bed early, for example. It's a joy for me to see them learn about emotional intelligence, it's something that I didn't have while growing up and I am very proud to teach my kids about emotional regulation. What part of your job makes you feel the most fulfilled or alive? Although my full time job is currently in operations, I've learned that I can still weave in skills and communication styles that I even apply in parenting to my work. When there are challenging moments at work, it's important to me to check-in on my colleagues and encourage my team to talk about how they are feeling. Working in corporate in 2023 for me is perceived as an opportunity to change the narrative on many cultural corporate norms that have been established. I like pushing the envelope a bit. I try to tag-team with my managers in proposing ideas that promote overall well-being. In terms of the work that I do with Recovery Elevator and The Harmony Lane, it's important for me to share tools that can benefit people who are struggling with eating disorders, depression and addiction issues. I have been interviewed for multiple shows such as NAMI's newest podcast, sharing about my journey as well as tools that have allowed me to recover. It's important to me that my kids learn that work isn't just about making a living but also about positively impacting those around us. Anything else you would love for our audience to know about you? I would love to talk about the Latina roles in motherhood and how it's an added layer that I feel like we have to battle as our matriarch role is so ingrained in us—a conditioning many of us Latina women are trying to break free from while maintaining tradition and respecting our heritage. I really like discussing the difference between motherhood and mothering. To me, motherhood is how society perceives us as we parent, we get judged on that and we feel like we have to perform. Mothering on the other hand is the exclusive bond that I share with my children. We know authentically where we are at, we know we understand each other, even though some methods or styles of communication may be perceived as "abnormal" motherhood. I've worked really hard to create new values within my family such as setting and respecting healthy boundaries, learning the importance of saying "no" and not being afraid to disappoint the people that love you. Growing up in Mexico, what I saw to be a successful matriarch definitely involved always saying yes; pleasing others at all cost and sacrificing yourself for your family. I love my country and my heritage, so sometimes it feels very against the grain to be doing things differently than how grandma did it, for example. However I am proud to be carving a new path for my kids. We celebrate important Mexican traditions and still emphasize cultural norms while living with a new set of values.

Listen on Apple, Google, Spotify, and other platforms. Samantha Pantazopoulos and Dylan Barbour are the co-founders of Vizer, an application designed to help people develop healthier habits while also giving back to the community. Sam had been participating in a social innovation incubator when she first brainstormed Vizer. At the incubator, the goal was to come up with unique solutions to social issues. These solutions needed to be both sustainable and scalable. In this process, she thought about how she had always wanted to work out, but struggled to find the motivation. She wondered how she could make doing physical activity about something ‘bigger’ than yourself. This is how she came up with Vizer, which allows users to donate meals once they reach their fitness goals. Each day, users can set fitness goals, from walking 10,000 steps to completing a high intensity work out. Once their Apple Watch or FitBit registers the exercise, Vizer will donate a meal on the user’s behalf. After hearing about the idea, Sam’s cousin, Dylan, quit his job and moved to San Diego. In their first year in San Diego, they set up meetings with around 400 people, showing business owners a clickable powerpoint to spotlight the application. Quickly, they had formed partnerships with several local restaurants, including Birdrock Coffee Roasters, Empanada Kitchen, and Chosen Foods. The platform focuses on three levels of impact - helping people get more active, increasing access to healthy food, and supporting local businesses. While starting to grow exclusively in San Diego, they worked only with brands they trusted, bootstrapping the majority of their funds. They sought restaurant sponsors who shared the team’s definition of healthy: that being healthy wasn’t about working out seven days a week, but rather about balance. Dylan says a huge part of their scalability is the consumer sentiment segment. When users log exercise onto the application, they know they’re doing good for the community. It encourages them to share the application with their friends and family, growing the user base and impact. Sam remarks on how a few years ago, she was at a Thanksgiving 5K for the first time and realized that the application really did motivate her. But she knew it didn’t work for just her, as that day they hit 20,000 meals donated. Following their partnership with Peloton, they began to see numbers of 20,000 a week. Before they knew it, they reached 1 million workouts for impact. After seeing so much success in the San Diego area, the team plans to expand the application in various metropolitan areas across the country in an effort to further fuel impact-based exercise. They additionally just created Vizer Explore, which combats traditional social media pages by only promoting ‘good for you’ content including body positivity and healthy recipes. Listen in to hear more about Sam and Dylan’s journey with Vizer and how their business model is changing the way we view exercise and social impact. To celebrate Vizer’s giving platform, we’re launching a 30 day Tacos and Tech Vizer Challenge. Every day you donate on Vizer, mark it on our leaderboard and weekly and monthly winners will get gift cards for local taco shops. All you need to do is sign up and update this sheet with meals donated for the opportunity to win! Let’s get moving for good! Carlton Fowler loves the occasional bottle of Miller High Life. But as the co-founder and managing partner of Goat Rodeo Capital, a venture capital firm focused on early stage investments in beverage alcohol, non-alcoholic drinks and cannabis-centric brands, his tastes are a bit more refined. Since its inception in May 2019, Goat Rodeo has invested in eight companies, including ready-to-mix cocktail maker DRNXSMYTH, canned wine brand Archer Roose and Sourced Craft Cocktails, a service that delivers made-to-order cocktails. Goat Rodeo is also an investor in cannabis ingredient supplier Vertosa and cold-pressed lemon water brand Lemon Perfect. The common thread among these brands? They represent concepts that have a unique consumer proposition or go-to-market strategy, according to Fowler. In an interview included in this episode, Fowler discussed why Goat Rodeo’s investment philosophy is rooted in his and partner James Pelligrini’s operational experience in the alcoholic beverage industry, as well as how he identifies new products that have a runway for success. He also explained why he’s bearish on alcohol-free alternatives in the beer, wine and spirits categories and how he evaluates the opportunity for cannabis-based beverages amid an uncertain regulatory environment. Show notes: 0:39: Reflections On In N’ Out, Zico, Chicago Sauce and Grocery Outlet -- The episode’s hosts revisited a smash and grab in wine country and discussed a slew of upcoming events for BevNET and NOSH, including the next edition of Speed Dating, CBD Today and Tomorrow, New Beverage Showdown 20 and Pitch Slam 9. They also spoke about the news that the Coca Cola Co. will discontinue pioneering coconut water brand Zico, NOSH’s recent new product gallery and Jacqui’s eye-opening visit to a discount supermarket. 19:25: Interview: Carlton Fowler, Co-Founder & Managing Director, Goat Rodeo Capital -- Taste Radio editor Ray Latif spoke with Fowler about his striking LinkedIn headshot, how his experience working with wine conglomerate E & J Gallo helped shape his perspective as an investor and the three tenets that shape Goat Rodeo’s funding decisions. He also discussed how the firm analyzes the potential for non-alcoholic refreshment beverages and why he believes that a popular spirit-alternative brand worked because “it solved a problem for a customer, not a consumer.” Brands in this episode: Zico, Vita Coco, La Colombe, The Original Chicago Sauce, Bare Bells, Fat Snacks, Super Salad Bar, Liquid IV, Hydrant, Magicdates, Vega, Amy’s Kitchen, Good Karma, Meatless Farm, Pizza Ogi, Beyond Meat, The Little Northern Bakehouse, Kevita, Chosen Foods, Elmhurst Naturals, Archer Roose, Sourced Craft Cocktails, Drnxmyth, Lemon Perfect, Seedlip, Hoplark HopTea, CANN
Katherine Harvey is the Co-founder of Bare Bones, a San Diego based nutrition company offering a full menu of protein-infused products including ready to use bone broth, collagen protein powder, and instant bone broth beverage mixes. After three years as a business reporter at the San Diego Union Tribune, Kate left journalism and took the leap into the food industry to run Bare Bones along with her husband Ryan Harvey. Bare Bones quickly became one of the top innovators in the bone broth industry by pushing the limits of how to deliver bone broth to consumers with a focus on maximum convenience and top quality. Kate's words to live by are 'May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears'. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: Kate talks about her husband's transition from being a fine dining chef to a bone broth maker How Kate transitioned from being a reporter to writing a cookbook and entering the food industry The difference between bone broth and bone stock, and benefits of taking bone broth Why the new business decided to move to Oregon and how they landed their first investor Kate talks about the process of getting into retail, the challenges they faced and what they learned from that process How the company's first frozen product line was shipped and how they changed it to shelf stable How customer feedback prompted the company create a less expensive and more convenient product Where to find Bare Bones’ products How selling on Amazon has impacted the company's sales How Bare Bones’ broth products fit in with different lifestyle diets Challenges faced in marketing to people in different consumer groups and demographics Bare Bones’ plans for the future and new products coming out soon What Ryan Harvey has been upto and what he does in the company Why the company decided to move back to California How attendants of Expo West were affected by the health crisis Kate's advice to fellow entrepreneurs on managing through failures and resiliency Where to learn more about Bare Bones and get their cookbook In this episode… It is ironic that a good number of chefs live unhealthy lifestyles despite working in restaurants. They rarely get the time to sit down and enjoy a good meal. Many times they drink stock to sustain themselves through service, and if this stock is store-bought, it is often not very nutritious. Katherine & her husband Ryan are in the business of creating 100% organic bone broths to provide nutritious protein alternatives to people. Ryan was a fine dining chef who faced the same challenge many chefs working in busy restaurants face regularly. He & Kate launched their bone broth side business out of a local food delivery service and soon grew to not only selling in supermarkets but also in online marketplaces. Katherine Harvey joins Steve Cleere in this week's episode to talk about her journey and her husband's transition to the food industry. She also talks about the benefits of her company's bone broth over common stock products found in food stores, how the company found its first investor and entered the retail market, and how selling on Amazon has impacted sales. Let’s say that you’ve created an iconic brand that essentially launched a category and is beloved by millions of loyal consumers. Why would you change anything? That’s the question we explored in our interview with GT Dave, the founder and CEO of GT’s Living Foods, the maker of GT’s Kombucha. The top-selling kombucha brand recently underwent a packaging refresh that tweaked a few elements of its label design and renamed two product sublines as a way to better delineate its offerings. In a conversation included in this episode, Dave spoke about the reasoning behind each change and how his perspective as a category creator impacted the moves. He also spoke about why he’s embraced a more public persona and why he’s adamant that kombucha should avoid comparisons to soda. Show notes: 0:37: Mike’s Quill of Judgment, Tracking Snacking & A Love Letter To Costco -- The episode’s hosts spoke about the upcoming BevNET New Beverage Showdown 19 and NOSH Pitch Slam 8 competitions and how interested brands can apply, how some snack brands are adapting to changing times and palates and the elements of a successful virtual sampling event. They also riffed on Melissa’s passion for a certain club retailer and a few delectable ice cream and latte products consumed over the past week. 15:05: GT Dave, Founder/CEO, GT’s Living Foods -- BevNET CMO Mike Schneider spoke with Dave about the timing of his brand’s packaging refresh and what he viewed as significant problems in how consumers perceived and understood each of GT’s product lines, along with other brands in the kombucha set. Dave also discussed why he sees parallels in the evolution of the kombucha and craft beer categories, how he originally conceived the naming and design of his products, including the meaning of GT’s Synergy line, and why the new look beverages are more deliberate in their description of what’s inside the bottle. Later, he explained why he sees himself as “an overprotective parent” when it comes to his brand, incorporating consumer feedback into the refresh and how he’s become more comfortable interacting with his customers and the trade, reacting to the provocative “Forbes” profile of him and the educational component of rolling out a new look. Brands in this episode: GT’s Kombucha, Health-Ade, MALK, Know Brainer, Beckon Ice Cream, Chosen Foods, Virginia Distilling Co., DiNoci Dairy-Free, Pop & Bottle, Yasso, Vita Coco, Snapple, SoBe, Mountain Dew, Red Bull, White Claw

Plants = The Secret to Longevity. In Research on Blue Zones (communities where people live the longest in world) studies show that plant-based options are the primary protein source. You would think this news is reason enough to eat less meat, but only one in ten Americans are eating enough vegetables! Chosen Foods is on a mission to amp up your plant intake! ABOUT Chosen Foods was founded by a well traveled Naturopathic Doctor who discovered the powerful effect traditional foods were having in their native cultures. He was inspired to share these ancient superfoods with the rest of the world - and so our journey began. His vision centered around the idea that food should nourish and sustain our bodies, our lives and our communities. Learn more about our founding leadership team here. A few years, some big changes and several products later, our integrity and core values remain the same. The mission of Chosen Foods is to support true nourishment through the rediscovery and accessibility of real food. At a time when food is often fast and convenient, we encourage people to slow down. We want to inspire folks to get in the kitchen and put real food back on the table. We believe the act of cooking and the time spent around the dinner table should be savored. Food should nourish and sustain our bodies, our lives and our communities. https://chosenfoods.com

Many biochemicals can act as neurotransmitters in the brain—some excite our neurons; others calm them. In particular, glutamate, aspartate, and cysteine are three amino acids that excite our neurons and can be called "excitotoxins." They are now added in large amounts to our food supply. Glutamate, as monosodium glutamate (MSG) is added to many foods. It excites our taste buds and can make bland food taste wonderful. It is contained in the sea vegetable, kombu, which has been used as a flavor enhancer "for thousands of years in Japan. But now Americans have been invaded by the Big Food Industry, and they found out how to add the killers to your FOOF Legally.
