To be a healthy leader means to step back... and let other voices or instruments rise to the top. Today's short “Tactics from the Owner's Box” takes us back to another clip from a recent episode—this one with the founder of KIND Bar, Daniel Lubetzky as he discusses the entrepreneur as orchestra director. Special Guest: Daniel Lubetzky.
If you have a company that strives to be, in their own words, “Kind to one's tastebuds, body, and the world” -- can you tease out when it pays to be kind, and what you do when you have to assess that mission pragmatically? What about when you bring that novel supply chain to market. What works in the market, and how does it shape your path to getting there? In today's episode, we look at the balancing act between Business and Social Good with Kind Snacks Founder Daniel Lubetzky. Special Guest: Daniel Lubetzky.
To be successful in business you need to be tough, unrelenting, ruthless…a shark, right? That's why one of the most successful shows about business is called, “Shark Tank”! But is there a kinder way to dominate the corporate world? Daniel Lubetzky created his self-made-multi-billions with one overriding agenda – to foster connection, understanding and most importantly, to promote kindness between people who are in conflict. Best known as the founder of KIND Snacks…in this episode he discusses how he almost made a $200 million dollar mistake, what it took to make Kind a successful brand, and his many charitable businesses, where his focus is empowering people to work across social divides, and to create real and lasting relationships. AND…this kind man, is also the newest member of NBC's, Shark Tank. Really no really! *** IN THIS EPISODE: How a billionaire deals with time management…and…ADHD! The mistakes that were integral to Danny's immense success. KIND Bars unexpected power to unleash kindness. How a soon-to-be billionaire learned when to trust his instincts (and when not to). Promoting understanding by dismantling the “us vs. them” and “oppressor/victim” frameworks. What attracted a do-gooder to become a Shark? What makes a Shark Tank idea investable? HINT: It's not the product. If divisive messages flourish on Mainstream Media, social media and in politics…how do you create a positive message that cuts through? Hate and anger fuel online engagement …can humor trump those emotions? The one thing Jason disagrees with Daniel on. Daniel Lubetzky, founder of Kind Snacks, transformed his morning routine to improve his life. He previously slept late at 2 a.m. and prioritized clearing his inbox over rest, leading to poor sleep and skipped workouts. He now sleeps from midnight to 8 a.m. and starts his day with stretching. To enhance productivity, he advises completing tasks once started, as each email diverts attention. He recommends reading "The Daily Stoic" by Ryan Holiday, which discusses control and focus in life.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/ Hosted on Acast. Meet Daniel Lubetzky, founder of KIND Healthy Snacks and son of a Holocaust survivor. He is irresistible, a force for good that is asking us to reflect on what our role in the conversation can be. His point of view is grounded in his father's experiences during the Holocaust, most especially in a single moment of unexpected kindness that saved his father's life. Daniel wonders with Kelly about the sickening power of dehumanization in social division and the important, if exhausting, work of bridging divides. This 5-part series on Rupture and Repair has been funded by the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. We work with them regularly and have been inspired by their commitment to share the principles and practices of bridge building. If this series has been valuable to you, please take 15 seconds to rate and review this podcast so that more listeners can join us in the communal effort of making things a little tiny bit nicer in America.
When Miguel Leal and his co-founders launched the modern Mexican food brand Somos Foods in 2021, they believed they were introducing a “Goya for millennials.” It turns out that Somos was more suited to be a “Rao's for all consumers.” Miguel is the CEO of Somos Foods, which he founded with Kind Snacks founder Daniel Lubetzky and Rodrigo Zuloaga, who, like Miguel, is a former Kind executive. Somos markets clean ingredient “simmer sauces,” salsa, rice and beans produced in Mexico and made using traditional techniques, according to the brand. The products are distributed in over 11,000 retail doors, including Target, Publix, Whole Foods Market, Walmart and Albertsons. While the founders' original concept – to “re-envision Mexican cuisine in the U.S. with a focus on authenticity, convenience, and sustainability” – has remained consistent, the communication of that message has evolved. Somos is now positioned as a brand for “Mexican meal solutions.” Miguel says that the shift required the company to rethink nearly every aspect of the business, including marketing and product development. The undertaking was challenging and, at times, humbling for Miguel and his co-founders, each of whom have decades of experience in the food industry. In this episode, Miguel speaks about the genesis of Somos, how he and the team came to the realization that the brand needed to adjust its positioning, mistakes that, in hindsight, were avoidable, identifying areas for improvement in how the products tasted and were named, and how their timeline for an potential acquisition has changed significantly. Show notes: 0:35: Miguel Leal, Co-Founder & CEO, Somos Foods – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif visits with Miguel at Somos HQ in Stamford, Connecticut where the entrepreneur chats about the brand's new simmer sauces, his roots growing up on the Mexico/U.S. border and how his profession career is anchored in food marketing. He also explains how the creation of Somos came from he and his co-founders being “frustrated with the options at US grocery,” how they erred in trying to build the brand in a similar way to how Kind Snacks was built, why he compares Somos to Legos and the meaning behind its name. Miguel also discussed the company's emphasis on simple messaging and easy food prep for consumers, why he thought that at the outset that “in 3-5 years Somos could be a great acquisition target” and how he communicated the shift in strategy to the company's investors. Brands in this episode: Somos Foods, Kind Snacks, Cholula, Goya, Rao's

"As a passionate Muslim and a passionate Jew, we have come together to humbly share a path forward for how to transcend the construct of 'us vs. them' and side with humanity instead." That's from a recent open letter to college students across America, written by Daniel Lubetzky, founder of KIND Snacks, and Lonnie Ali, co-founder of the Muhammad Ali Center and wife of the late Muhammad Ali. Lonnie and Daniel have both witnessed the growing hatred on American college campuses as the Israel-Hamas war rages on, and they say students themselves are at the heart of the solution. In their letter, they detail what they call ten ways to side with humanity, including: "It helps, not hurts, your cause to empathize with the pain of the other side" and "to get the full story, pop your social media bubble." Plus: the new challenges for DEI programs on college campuses. Guests: Daniel Lubetzky, founder of KIND Snacks and co-founder of the Starts with Us movement; Lonnie Ali, co-founder of the Muhammad Ali Center, and wife of the late Muhammad Ali. My motivational quote is by - Daniel Lubetzky, “Empathy is one of our greatest tools of business that is most underused.” OMG, when I found this quote, I knew it was the winner for today's topic. For the past 40 years, Empathy and understanding have been a core piece of how I developed my career and, for the past 22 years, my business. Empathy isn't about being weak. On the contrary, it's where strength and integrity come from. Especially in sales, I see the need to be empathetic before we can show how brilliant we are or the solutions we provide. When 2 sisters moved to Florida from Venezuela there was something they were missing from their homeland and they wanted to quickly solve that problem. Fittingly named "Toast-It," these sisters built a brand out of the one thing they missed the most after moving to the U.S. from Caracas, Venezuela — their mother's cooking. Mafe and Coco's products are made using ingredients that are true to their Venezuelan culture and after initial success with a handful of retailers, they decided to apply for a spot on Shark Tank! Mafe and Coco's products are made using ingredients that are true to their Venezuelan culture. The Toast-It arepas, for instance, are made using white cornmeal flour, much like the masarepa that's used in traditional arepas. But, they also come in other versions — one that's seeded, combining the cornmeal with flax and chia seeds, and another made with cassava, also known as yuca flour, that is also traditional to Latin cuisines. On Shark Tank O'Leary made the sisters an offer: $100 grand for 20% equity — Mafe and Coco, were asking for the same amount of money for 5%. Guest shark Daniel Lubetzky matched it, and the girls countered by offering them both 15% equity for $150,000, ultimately striking a deal with Lubetsky. On Today's show you'll learn:

"International foods are having a moment," said Miguel Leal, co-founder and CEO of Somos Foods. Indeed, that's the thesis of his startup, which makes Mexican food products currently sold in over 6,000 stores including Whole Foods and H-E-B. The company has been around for two years and sells products like chips, salsas as well as rice and bean packs. It first started as an online brand but quickly realized that the way to grow a brand like his is by zeroing in on grocery distribution. "Life was definitely pointing us into retail," Leal said on the Modern Retail Podcast. On the show, he spoke about the state of both CPG startups and why international foods are becoming an increasingly popular area for national grocery retailers. Leal knows a thing or two about national retail. He and his co-founders all worked together at Kind -- in fact, Kind founder Daniel Lubetzky is one of Sonos's co-founders. Leal also worked as the chief marketing officer at both Cholula and Diamond Foods. This background helped him realize that there was white space for a premium Mexican food brand. While high-end Mexican restaurants have risen the ranks in U.S. culture over the last year, "it was the same canned beans and fluorescent yellow hard shell tacos at grocery store." Thus, Somos aims to be a step above Old El Paso. So far, the idea seems to be working. Somos continues to expand into new national retailers as well as expand its product portfolio. Most recently, it launched a salsa macha condiment. "We have some big retail announcements coming soon over the summer, another big one in the fall, and then by the end of the year," he said. "But we also have some really exciting products coming into the market."
If 87% of people are sick and tired of being divided we have more in common than we think. Daniel Lubetzky — philanthropist, social entrepreneur, and founder of the Kind company — is committed to understanding how we can come together to solve our most intractable problems. As a Mexican immigrant and son of a Holocaust survivor, Daniel believes fervently in our ability to overcome obstacles like hatred; he built his non-profit, Starts With Us, to help us find common ground. This episode also features Columbia psychology professor, Peter Coleman. His book “The Way Out: How to Overcome Toxic Polarization,” offers concrete tips on what each of us can do to achieve what so many of us want: solutions. Want to be a know-it-all?
