Earl Ingram hosts Sandy Williams on a Tuesday broadcast to discuss the deployment of School Resource Officers (SROs) in Milwaukee Public Schools, following a court ruling that requires 25 SROs by February 17. A Milwaukee County judge has ordered the City of Milwaukee and MPS to share the financial responsibilities, with each covering 50% of the costs. The conversation then shifts to Donald Trump and his impact on reducing government programs like the IRS and CDC, which they argue contribute to "bloating the government." US attorneys and mayors have resigned due to the negative impact on their constituents and the apparent lack of commitment to adequately training the appropriate personnel within the Trump administration. It shows that Trump is flexing absolute power in government, almost a Hitler approach. At the debate tonight, there probably won't be much talk about American education. Which is a shame - at least according to Josh Cowen, author of The Privateers, a new book about how radical conservative billionaires like Betsy De Vos have created a culture war to sell their idea of school vouchers. It's all part of the right-wing Project 2025 vision, Cowen suggests, of collapsing the church-state boundaries and making American public schools mirror the country's inequities and injustices. The alternative, Cowen suggests, is for Federal or State governments to fund these public schools more generously, thereby allowing all Americans to get a fair and decent education. Josh Cowen is a nationally recognized expert and writer on topics related to school choice, teachers and teaching, policy analysis, and education politics. He has studied school vouchers, school accountability, charter schools, and parental decision-making as part of major research teams in Louisiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. His writing on school vouchers, culture wars, and other current events has appeared in major media outlets ranging from Slate to Time Magazine. He speaks and testifies across the country on the dangers of school privatization and is regularly quoted in state and national feature reporting. In addition to his appointment as professor of education policy at Michigan State University, Dr. Cowen has also served as one of five national directors of the National Center for Research on Education Access and Choice (REACH) based at Tulane University. In 2016, he founded the Education Policy Innovation Collaborative (EPIC), a strategic research partnership between Michigan State University and the state of Michigan. He has held a variety of editorial positions for major academic journals, and was co-editor of Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis—the premier education policy journal in the United States. His research has been funded through federal, state and local government contracts, as well as a diverse array of philanthropies such as Arnold Ventures, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Spencer Foundation and the Walton Family Foundation. Josh Cowen holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University, and a B.A. in history from the University of Michigan. Before beginning his research and writing career, he worked in CNN's Washington, D.C. Bureau and on staff for the political debate show Crossfire. Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. In this episode I am joined by Patricia Asimacos. Patricia is the founder of HBBU, Hellenic Boston Businesses Unite. A new initiative to help Greeks from Boston connect on a business and personal level, doing so for a good cause. Here is a bit about Patricia in her own words: Growing up as a Greek-American was by far the most rewarding experience. At a young age, I realized that my parents were providing my sister and I with the best of both worlds.  Being raised in Belmont, Massachusetts and attending the Public School System, while simultaneously going to Greek School and Sunday School at the Taxiarchae Church in Watertown, Massachusetts was magical.  I must admit that I had always sensed a stronger connection with my Greek heritage.  I attribute this to the powerful bond my family had with Greece and our Orthodox Faith.  Although I was baptized at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Boston (where my father served as a board member), I was raised in the Taxiarchae Church under the loving guidance of the beloved Father Metaxas.  Father Metaxas was unequivocally one of the most prominent figures in my life.  I viewed this great man not only as my spiritual Father, but also as my adopted father, when my own suddenly passed during my sophomore year at Boston College. Father Metaxas supported my family and I during our darkest hours, and brought us solace through our Faith.  His empathy and love for my family was like no other. Upon my graduation from Boston College, the plan was to attend BC Law School.  However, I chose to work at a firm prior to attending law school, in order to confirm my career choice.  Law was of interest to me, however, it brought no joy to me.  It was during this time period that I discovered my true calling was to be an educator.   My love for children began at the Taxiarchae Church, under the guidance of Father Metaxas.  I served as a Sunday School teacher with a true love for educating young children.  It was a memorable time for my sister and I as we co-taught our Faith to little angels on Earth, and I am grateful for having had the opportunity.  Soon after my epiphany, I attended Boston University.  I was fortunate to graduate with honors, while obtaining a Master's Degree in Education. Since then, I have been teaching English as a Second Language.  I have had the honor of working with children both in Greece as well as the United States, specifically Peabody High School.  To date, my bond with Orthodoxy and the Taxiarchae Church is priceless. I am truly blessed to have my son share this connection, as he serves God in the Altar of our church.  I realize that my faith in God and His ways have lightened every path for me thus far in life, and I will surely continue to have blind faith in God. - To learn more about HBBU, give them a follow on Instagram at hbbu.boston - GreeceChats Podcast is available on all podcast platforms, you can follow the podcasts instagram page at @greecechatspodcast.
