Poets' Corner is WestWords' monthly encounter with celebrated Australian poets, curated by David Ades. Each month a poet is invited to read and talk about their poetry on a theme of the poet's choice. Melbourne-based poet, Peter Bakowski, fell in love with the map of the world at the age of six. In 1983 he wrote his first poem while staying at a friend's farmhouse in Waco, Texas, in response to receiving a “Dear John” letter from a Melbourne girl. As a result of that fateful letter, Peter ended up travelling for seven years, caught a freight train across Montana, lived in a cave on a Mexican island and ate gazelle cooked in stale blood with road builders in the Central Africa Republic. Peter has been writer-in-residence in Rome, Paris, Macau, Suzhou (China), Battery Point, Tasmania; Greenmount, Western Australia and at the Broken Hill Writers Festival. His poems continue to appear in literary magazines worldwide and have been translated into Arabic, Bahasa-Indonesian, Bengali, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin and Polish. The following titles by Peter Bakowski are available to buy (prices listed and post-free): • The Heart At 3am (Hale & Iremonger, 1997) $20 • Days That We Couldn't Rehearse (Hale & Iremonger 2002) $20 • Beneath Our Armour (Hunter Publishers, 2009) $20 • Personal Weather (Hunter Publishers, 2014) $20 • The Courage Season (Guillotine Press, 2017) $20 • The Elsewhere Variations (co-written with Ken Bolton) (Wakefield Press, 2019) $20 • Wardrobe of Selves (Recent Work Press, 2019) $15 If interested, email Peter: pbakowski54@gmail.com ______ ABOUT WESTWORDS WestWords is a literature organisation whose mission is to provide support and resources for the writers, poets, artists, storytellers and creators of Western Sydney, in the form of events, workshops, residencies, school visits, fellowships, groups, consultations and mentorships. Hello, Pictish Trail, here! Welcome to Series 3 of the Lost Map Podcast - we’ve given it a bit of a reboot. We’re going to try and release a brand new episode of the pod on the first day of each month, centred around new music that we have released through our PostMap Club. Wish us luck.PostMap Club is our membership programme, where - from just £3 - you can receive printed postcards delivered to your door every month, containing downloads for new music from the label. You also receive a membership badge, monthly newsletter and discount codes for other stuff from the label. Visit lostmap.com/club for details on how to join.In this episode of the podcast, you’ll hear some scintillating chat with Claire McKay, aka Martha Ffion. She tells us about the making of her new album - Nights To Forget - and reveals all the details of an exclusive live session she’s recorded, entitled Captured On Cassette. The full session was filmed, and will premiere live on Wednesday 25th November - PostMap Club members will get free access, and tickets will also be available to purchase separately from lostmap.com.We’ve also got a face-to-face interview between Laura and Mike from the band Firestations - they give us the scoop on a new series of EPs they’re releasing with us over the coming months. The first EP, Automatic Tendencies is out on November 6th, and features the single ’Small Island’ and a “sunken version” of ‘Greenmount’, clips of which you can hear in this episode. In First Gig / Worst Gig, we ask artists to tell us about the first gig they ever attended as a punter, and the worst gig they’ve ever played as a performer. Our first contestant for this feature is Callum Easter, whose debut album - Here Or Nowhere - recently won the public vote for Scottish Album of the Year. Both his first gig and his worst gig choices are absolutely harrowing.Another new regular feature is called THIS OR THAT, in which we ask a series of quick-fire questions on the hottest of all hot topics. The first person to take the challenge is a brand new signing to the label, SULKA. But will he choose this, or that?!!? His new single ‘Fear It’ is out now, and the postcard comes with an exclusive acoustic version. We’re got clips of music from all the above, and there’s also a brand new track (in full!) from Clémentine March. A packed show!-EPISODE TRACKLISTING:1. Martha Ffion - ’Nights To Forget’ (Captured On Cassette live session)2. Martha Ffion - ‘Going Out In Style’ (Captured On Cassette live session)3. This week’s episode is that of Nicole Ryan’s story. It began in Jan 2016 when my only brother Alex went to a house party in the Greenmount area, Cork City and took a synthetic substance believing it to be a less potent drug called 2-CP. Alex had thought he had done his research on the substance he was trying. He was 18 years of age and had a lot of plans for his future. Alex ended up taking a huge dose of the lethal drug known as Nbomb which resulted in him being brought to Cork University Hospital where Alex never regained consciousness and subsequently 4 days later sadly passed away after being pronounced brain-dead.Alex changed the lives of 4 people by donating 2 of his kidneys, his liver and his heart but Alex’s story did not end here. Nicole wanted what happened to my family to never need to happen to another so needlessly again so she decided that Alex would change the world and she would be his catalyst and his storyteller. She gave up her career as a Marine & Plant Engineer to come home and build Alex’s Adventure. Over the last 3 years Nicole travelled the length and breadth of the country visiting schools and delivering her workshop educating and sharing how our choices can impact our lives forever. She has visited over 55+ schools, colleges & youth clubs and has delivered this workshop to over 5500+ students nationwide. From this life changing experience Alex’s Adventure was born. Nicole and her team developed a brand-new program that aims to not only help the students learn more about substance misuse and about the impacts our choices have on the greater community. In this episode, we hear in more details how Nicole decided to take the chance with setting up Alex’s Adventure, what she’s learned since starting out, how the business has grown and evolved, how she is constantly pivoting, learning, and iterating Alex’s Adventure to be a better product. When he was merely weeks away from not making it, Microsoft sent him an e-mail with a proposition to use his “Too Close” song for a commercial. After he agreed to let them use his song, it became the 80th most Shazamed search of all time. Alex has found his own path of making music with an individuality that expressed across his album “Three Days in Greenmount”. The album showed that if your music sounds great acoustically, then you have a good song. This album is a new rendering of his songs, coming straight from his heart. He is currently touring to promote his new album. Check out Alex's tour dates and info on his new album here:https://www.alexclare.com/     https://www.youtube.com/user/alexclarehttps://www.instagram.com/alexanderclare/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/alexclaremusic/ Some of his earlier memories musically were singing along Bill Withers. Alex loved the sound of R+B and Soul. Alex grew up listening to his father’s jazz records, he took up the drums and a trumpet as a teenager, but after reaching adulthood, he shifted his focus towards guitar-based songwriting. He was drawn towards soul artists like Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, which eventually led his interest to shift towards drum and bass, dubstep, and UK garage. According to Alex, there are no rules in songwriting, it’s just variances of moods, influences, and emotions.Catch our latest episode and listen to Alex Clare talk about his inspirations and how his religion played an important part in his career. Here is a link to my last newsletter:https://us12.admin.mailchimp.com/templates/share?id=92794697_792355d83291c8276048_us12Let's officially Swagger then SwerveSwagger Swerve LinksGet in tune with your inner creativity with Swagger Swerve here: https://swaggerswerve.squarespace.comLet me know what you think as well by subscribing on social mediaYou can follow Geoff from Swagger Swerve at:Website: http://swaggwerswerve.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/swaggerthenswerveFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/swaggerswerveGeoff's New Program on how to release one song a month for the next 12 months - Music GSD (Get S Done) https://swaggerswerve.squarespace.com/storeGeoff

Alana Valentine—one of Australia’s most renowned and respected playwrights, whose work includes Parramatta Girls, Eyes to the Floor, Shafana and Aunt Sarrinah, Grounded and Cyberbile—reads the preface to the double edition of Brumby Innes and Bid Me to Love, two plays written by another of Australia’s literary treasures, Katharine Susannah Prichard. The introduction was written by Prichard's son, Ric Throssell.A little bit about Katharine Susannah PrichardPrichard was born in Levuka, Fiji, where her father was editor of the Fiji Times. She matriculated from South Melbourne College and worked briefly as a governess. She later taught in Melbourne studying English literature at night. In 1908 she travelled to London, working as a freelance journalist for the Melbourne Herald and, on her return, as the social editor of the Herald's women's page. In 1912 she left for England again to pursue a career as a writer and published two novels, The Pioneers and Windlestraws. She met the Australian Victoria Cross winner, Captain Hugo Throssell while away and in 1919 she married him and moved to Western Australia. Already a committed Communist in 1920, she was a founding member of the Communist Party of Australia. In 1922 her only son Ric Throssell was born. While she was on a trip to the Soviet Union in 1933 Hugo Throssell committed suicide. From the 1920s until her death she lived at Greenmount, Western Australia, earning her living as a writer of novels, short stories and plays. Her novels include Black Opal; Working Bullocks; The Wild Oats of Han; Coonardoo; Haxby's Circus; Intimate Strangers; and the goldfields trilogy The Roaring Nineties, Golden Miles and Winged Seeds. Prichard was a member of the Communist Party of Australia until her death, and her political concerns were reflected in most of her published work. Her novels were published throughout the world and translated into numerous languages. In 1951 she was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature.A few words about Brumby Innes and Bid Me to LoveWritten in the 1920s, Brumby Innes confronts the turbulent relations between the sexes and the races in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is published with another Prichard play from the 1920s, Bid Me To Love which, by contrast, is set among the fashionable rich in the lush hills outside Perth.

Reporter: Kina Pohjanen Producent: Lisa Helgesson Exekutiv producent: Eskil Larsson
