Welcome to The Campaign Moment, The Washington Post's weekly politics roundtable to help you keep track of the biggest developments of the 2024 campaign.Senior political reporter Aaron Blake, who writes The Post's new Campaign Moment newsletter, is out sick this week, so national political reporter Michael Scherer and White House reporter Tyler Pager join Martine Powers this week. They talk about how the Biden campaign may need more popular Democratic candidates down ballot to boost turnout in key battleground states, Donald Trump's claims that President Biden was prepared to “take me out” when the Department of Justice raided Mar-a-Lago in 2022, and the controversy swirling around political-flag-flying at Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.'s homes.Today's show was produced by Ted Muldoon and Laura Benshoff. It was edited by Renita Jablonski and Mary Jo Murphy and mixed by Rennie Svirnovskiy. In a regular election cycle, Presidents often employ what is called the "coattails effect" to help elect down ballot candidates in their party. Their influence and campaign presence can help sway voters to vote for their endorsed candidate. However, very little is regular about this upcoming election. And this time, democrats are using their popularity in their respective states to push voters to vote for President Biden, in a "reverse coattails" effect. How will this impact 2024 in November? Paul Kane from the Washington Post joins the show.
Last week, President Joe Biden gave a statement and took two (literally two) questions on the matter of college campus protests in support of the Palestinian people, and in the process of that address, managed to alienate himself further from activists needed to win close races. Okay, so will he need to ride on "reverse coattails?" Surely that's how he gets re-elected, if he does, right? Voter enthusiasm data tells us this could be a lot like 2012, but Biden ain't Obama. Also, why do conservative pundits in 2024 still not know what "good trouble" is? And why did one local pundit ignorantly suggest pro-Palestinian protestors send 'care packages' when aid isn't getting to 'em already? Senator Bernie Sanders, meanwhile, does manage to strike the right tone - a balance Biden can't find. Hear him with Christian Amanpour on CNN last week. Lastly, Bill Maher ain't crazy about Merrick Garland, and makes a good case for the rest of us on the left being tired of Democrats' playing (more than) fair while their opposition continues to self-serve.
Protests waged on at campuses across the US but the outcomes in blue cities and red cities were very different, protestors at Columbia demand food and drink service, UCLA and USC infected with Woke Mind Virus, what would Reagan do, the demographics tell it all, Zig and 9 others go to Zoom school, Trump in contempt of court, Zig's "reverse coattales" theory on the latest swing-state polling, Pelosi has MSNBC meltdown, Seinfeld and South Park and record low fertility rates. It's easy to feel like we're not doing enough - especially when it comes to faith. Are we praying enough, serving enough, giving enough? Isaiah's Servant knows how that feels, which is why they remind us that what matters isn't our ability or performance. Our faithfulness is made possible because of God's work in our world. So how can we rest in God's faithfulness - especially when we feel too small to accomplish God's calling?
Big real estate investing business players are all over every asset class available. There is not one investment portfolio that they are not focusing on. In fact, there is a growing interest now in some other properties they have yet to invest in. What are the chances of mom-and-pop real estate investing businesses thriving? Could this be the end of the small players in the industry? Is there any threat lurking around? That and more we will find out in this episode. Gunnar Branson is the CEO of AFIRE, an association for international real estate investors focused on commercial property in the United States. This group of institutional investors from 24 countries collectively manage approximately $3trillion in commercial real estate assets. Previously, Mr. Branson was the CEO of NAREIM (The National Association of Real Estate Investment Managers). His real estate background includes leadership roles with GE Capital Real Estate and Heller Financial. He also consulted companies such as Jones Lang LaSalle, Wells Fargo, Wrightwood Capital, CIBC, and Fidelity on innovation, product development, and marketing strategies. Mr. Branson is a frequent speaker, for universities and professional groups, on television, and with TEDx, on the changing landscape of commercial real estate In this episode, Gunnar shares what differentiates institutional investors from small players in the real estate business. He points out how they think of time and the scale with which they operate as the primary reason for its existence. He explained further that even with the massiveness in which they invest, he doesn't see any risk of getting small players out of the game; in fact, larger players can be part of smaller ones' exit strategy. Key Takeaways: "Part of what's been happening is, not just during COVID, the long-term lease they were investing in. It was typical for 20-plus year leases for large office tenants in these best-of-the-best buildings. You had a very stable asset. You had something where the tendency didn't flip over a lot and where you didn't have to worry about it every year like you do in multifamily. And where you had a very tangible asset that had value, not just for ten years, but for 100 years." - Gunnar Branson "A lot of smaller groups have actually looked at institutional investors as an exit, as a way to say, I'm going to create a portfolio, I'm going to then sell that portfolio to a larger player. And that tends to be how that works." - Gunnar Branson "Quite honestly, most of the innovation needs to take place at a small scale before it gets to the large, but you know, to a certain extent, think of institutional players as these large creatures that, although they can be somewhat nimble, because of the people that are working inside these companies, they are really not interested in taking away the business of the mom and pops." - Gunnar Branson Connect with Gunnar Branson: Website: https://www.afire.org/ Connect with Dave Dubeau: Podcast: http://www.propertyprofitspodcast.com/ Website: https://davedubeau.com/home Investor Attraction Workshop: http://www.investorattractionworkshop.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedavedubeau LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/davedubeau

Washington falls to UCLA in a wet mop of a contest. The Huskies are now 1-2 in conference and 2-4 overall. Over at Hardcore Husky, the natives are now emailing UW athletic director Jennifer Cohen, who stated last week that her #1 concern is not the failing football or men's basketball teams, but rather the so-called fans who are hurting the confidence of the players and ruining their college experience. Lionel Messi made his Paris Saint-Germain debut on Sunday against Stade de Reims but you could argue that storyline took a backseat to Kylian Mbappé's ongoing transfer saga. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by my co-host, Marc Damon, to discuss PSG's 2-0 win over Reims in which Mbappé started and recorded a brace. We also dive into Real Madrid's tactics in trying to sign Mbappé before the end of the transfer window and look ahead to the UEFA Champions League. Up first, we break down the Reims victory. Mauricio Pochettino's side pressed well and outstanding performances from Angel Di Maria and Achraf Hakimi thrilled supporters, but it was Mbappé's performance that stole the show. His two goals may have won the game but it was Messi's arrival in the 66th minute that everyone (including the rival supporters) was waiting for. On the negative side of things, the defense continues to be an issue with Reims attacking PSG successfully through the air. Is it time to replace Keylor Navas with the much taller Gianluigi Donnarumma? Next, we spend a good amount of time talking about Mbappé and Real Madrid. Is the offer from Madrid in good faith, or are they testing PSG and trying to force them into a bad decision? PSG has dominated the summer transfer window, is this Real Madrid's way of trying to appease their supporters to show that they're trying to sign a superstar and stay relevant? After the Mbappé talk, we discuss the Champions League draw and neither Marc or I think PSG should have too much trouble advancing, but at least one win against Manchester City is absolutely necessary. The show concludes with our thoughts on the brawl between OGC Nice, Olympique de Marseille, and Nice supporters, and the potential ratings boost for beIN Sports in the United States with Messi playing in Ligue 1. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. We're also on Discord!
