The week featured the expansion of Trump's shakedowns of prominent sectors of civil society. The legal industry was stunned when prominent law firm Paul Weiss agreed to terms to in order to get Trump to withdraw a blackballing order. Columbia U. also capitulated to Trump's demands to save $400 million in federal grants. Where does it stop? Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. NY correspondent Luke Tress joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's Daily Briefing. Columbia University has agreed to a series of changes demanded by the Trump Administration as a precondition for restoring $400 million in federal funding the government pulled this month over the school’s handling of antisemitism on campus amid pro-Palestinian protests against Israel. Tress has been covering the anti-Israel protests that have erupted since October 7, 2023, when Hamas slaughtered 1,200 in southern Israel. We speak about new measures that Columbia is taking — especially the restriction of face masks — and discuss whether they will change the intensity of the protests. Relatedly, on Friday, detained Columbia University student activist Mahmoud Khalil appeared briefly in immigration court at a remote Louisiana detention center as his lawyers fight in multiple venues to try to free him. We discuss the continued debate within the Jewish community over immigration rights and free speech, versus the safety of Jewish students on campus. Finally, we speak about a trend among US Jews who are looking for increased self-protection through a variety of measures, including taking self-defense courses such as the Israeli martial art, Krav Maga, or, as in a piece we recently published, highly trained -- and highly expensive -- protection dogs. Please see today's ongoing liveblog for more updates. McCarthy looks at the legal aspects of Khalil's arrest, the legal fight that will follow, and what he believes needs to be done to ensure safety on college campuses. Retired NYPD Inspector Paul Mauro joins in to explain how Columbia U. emboldened college students to continue their anti-Israel protests.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

090324 Gaza Protests at Columbia U, UK Suspends Weapons, Hamas' Price, NY Carnival Shooting by The News with Paul DeRienzo
Radical Islamist migrants are winning the war in the UK, where leaders jail their own citizens for trying to save their country, and gaining in other countries, as well! As your Terrorist Therapist®, Carole Lieberman, M.D., I have been warning you for years that terrorists want GLOBAL JIHAD - not just to destroy Israel and Jews. They've been working night and day for over 1,000 years to make their dream of conquering the world a reality… and it is finally coming true in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Africa and many other places. So, can America be far behind? NO! They're already here. As you listen to this podcast, I want you to ask yourself: Are we desensitized to terrorism? Have we capitulated to terrorism? Or are political forces, who want to destroy the West, forcing us to welcome terrorists into our midst?Currently, most shocking is the impact of the invasion of Radical Islamist migrants into England/the UK, where Islamists have gained increasing political power - from London's mayor Sadiq Khan to Prime Minister Keir Starmer. You'll hear how a Taylor Swift birthday party for little girls, attacked by a terrorist, has lit a match to create a civil war-with migrants storming the streets yelling “Allahu Akbar” and attacking random British citizens. Worse, these leaders are putting Brits in jail if they complain and protecting the terrorists instead! Yes, it's surreal. Almost as surreal is what was discovered in Germany: Afghans who claim ‘refugee' status, meaning they'd be in grave danger if they remained in their country of origin, now go on holiday to Afghanistan! You'll also hear how Iran is helping the Kamala campaign. Of course, they don't want Trump to win because he recognizes Iran for the threat to America that they are. In case you don't believe terrorists arean imminent threat, how about the Palestinian who was just arrested in Florida, after threatening to bomb a gas plant? In an effort to bring you some good news, I'll describe the recent court decision by a brave judge who issued a preliminary injunction against UCLA, that would shut down the campus if Pro-Hamas protesters continue to block Jewish students, and the antisemitic Columbia University president, Nemat Minouche Shafik, who finally resigned. But, Columbia U. Apartheid Divest is unabashedly proclaiming their goal is “total eradication of Western Civilization” and threatening to use even more extreme tactics. So, are you still desensitized?

As protests against Israel's genocide in Gaza, ethnic cleansing on the West Bank, and apartheid repression within '48 harden into a proliferation of encampments on US university campuses, still more have popped up across the globe—in Asia, Europe, Mexico, and elsewhere. These encampments have been met with brutal repression as many universities have called in riot police and even the military. Today we are joined by activists from the US, the UK, and Northern Ireland to discuss this historic formation. On the program is a faculty member from Columbia University; a lecturer, organizer, and PhD student from the London School of Economics, plus a masters' student and undergraduate; and two undergraduates from Queen's University, Belfast, who helped push through a divestment agreement. Even as some universities have started graduation ceremonies, these rituals have also been stages for protest and resistance, and these protests show no sign of lessening over the summer—it's rather the opposite. The next academic year will certainly see an acceleration and expansion of what has started this Spring.
National Review's Zach Kessel has been on the ground at Columbia University covering the pro-Hamas student protests. He joined Rep. Crenshaw to discuss his observations from talking with students about their motivations and end goals. They cover the influence of faculty and outside groups in organizing the encampments. And they discuss the legal ramifications of universities actively enabling antisemitism and discriminatory admissions. Zach Kessel is a William F. Buckley Jr. Fellow in Political Journalism at National Review and a recent graduate of Northwestern University. Follow him on X at @zach_kessel.
The number of arrests in connection to protests against the Israel-Hamas war has now gone over 2,000. A number of Native students are among those supporting the protests generally calling for universities to cut any ties to Israel's military efforts in Gaza. Inspired by students at Columbia University, additional protests have spread to more than two dozen campuses. The protests include occupying university buildings and setting up encampments. In addition to arrests, protesting students risk suspensions and other academic consequences. We'll hear from Native students in support of the largest college campus protests since the Vietnam War. Last week, the NYPD—called in by Columbia University President Minouche Shafik—arrested 108 Columbia and Barnard students, who had set up a Gaza solidarity encampment on a lawn in the center of campus. The group of students was subsequently suspended, and those at Barnard were evicted from campus housing. Over the following days, others reestablished the encampment—continuing the call for the university to disclose their investments and divest from Israeli companies, to boycott Israeli academic institutions, and to keep cops off campus, among other demands. In the week since the encampment was established—as the tactic spreads to campuses around the country—the movement has been maligned as a threat to Jewish students, and lawmakers like Sens. Tom Cotton and Josh Hawley as well as Jewish communal leaders like Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt have called for bringing in the National Guard. Jewish Currents editor-in-chief Arielle Angel spoke to three Jewish student organizers arrested at the original encampments—Izzy Lapidus, Sarah Borus, and Lea Salim—about their experiences over the past week and what Palestine solidarity organizing has looked like on their campuses since October 7th.Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).” Further Reading:"Evidence of torture as nearly 400 bodies found in Gaza mass graves," Al Jazeera“Statement on Columbia's Gaza Solidarity Protest Community Values,” Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD)“Republican Senators Demand Biden Use National Guard to Suppress Columbia Protests,” Nikki McCann Ramirez, Rolling StoneJonathan Greenblatt of the ADL calling for NYPD and the National Guard to be brought onto campus on XPassover seder at the Columbia encampment"NYPD Investigating 'Skunk' Chemical Attack at Columbia U," Johanna Alonso, Inside Higher Ed“Republicans Wanted a Crackdown on Israel's Critics. Max Blumenthal and Aaron Mate discuss the importance of Columbia U's Gaza encampment, the pro-Israel backlash against the growing protest movement, and apparent efforts to sabotage the demonstrations from within. They will also cover the vote by US Congress to spend $90 billion on disastrous conflicts in two theaters and a potential new one against China. On this edition of Parallax Views, Project Censored's Mickey Huff joins us to discuss Project Censored's State of the Free Press 2024, the media watchdog group's annual round-up of the most censored news stories in the United States. However, rather than just a straight rundown of this year's annual Project Censored offering, Mickey and I use this conversation to take the opportunity to discuss the recent controversy over the Columbia University pro-Palestinian Gaza protests, John Fetterman's comparing those protests to the Charlottesville "Unit the Right" rally, and Senator Tom Cotton calling for vigilante violence against protesters. With calls for the National Guard to be brought to Columbia University to put an end to the protests, Mickey and I reflect on the Kent State Massacre of 1970, the anniversary of which will be on May 4th. Additionally we'll discuss: - Mainstream media coverage of the Gaza war as well as the leaked New York Times memo telling journalists to avoid words and phrases like "genocide", "ethnic cleansing", and "occupied territories" when covering Israel/Palestine-related issues. - The importance of the right to protest to a functioning democracy - The lack of trust in corporate media and the worrying state of journalism today - Remembering Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg - Project Censored's coverage of PFAS or toxic "forever chemicals" and why this environmental story needs more coverage - And much, much more!

What's going on at Columbia U & a few other schools is terrible, it's move well beyond peaceful protests, but we're talking about a bunch of rich college kids on a few urban campuses rooting for Hamas. That's it. The vast majority of America stands with Israel.
