Dan Frank is a standup comedian who has been featured at the Tiny Cupboard Penthouse Festival, GEM Fest, PN & Friends, and toured for the musical/comedy act Queer MF across the Southwest/West Coasts. His comedy mostly deals with his family, his experiences from pretending to be straight, and how everyone thinks he's related to Anne Frank. Make sure to check him out!In this episode, we discuss growing up in Long Island and Vermont, being queer and religious, being musically inclined, overthinking everything, having a name that is close to a historical figure, and so much more. You don't want to miss our discussion about why Dan was banned from Grindr! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's episode is significant to me for a couple of reasons. First, what Dan Frank is doing epitomizes what this show is all about. He is a small, owner/operator of a business that allowed him to "make it in farm country". Dan values the lifestyle that living rural and farming brings, and this drives him to find a way to make a living "out there". Dan chose entrepreneurship to be the main way of creating his income in an area where jobs normally are scarce. He sees our current economy for what it is - a moment in time that will allow you to get ahead. Right now, Dan can get all of the side jobs he wants working for other people because unemployment is so low that farmers cannot find labor, let alone quality labor. However, Dan realizes that this is not going to last forever. So, instead of sitting back and enjoying the fact that he can work as much as he wants for other people and make good money right now, he is building his own business on the side for when the economy slows and jobs are less plentiful and competition for those jobs is higher. Dan has been bootstrapping his silage hauling business, Frankie's Feed Movers. He started out by purchasing an old truck and using an old box on the truck to get started. He is now creating enough revenue that he is going to be able to upgrade equipment and expand the services he can offer.

It's all about gorgeous, secluded, quaint, and charming Northport on this week's Behind the Mitten.Shhhh.....don't let anyone else in on this secret! Or at least this is what we've heard from locals for years, as they would like to keep their little slice of heaven to themselves if they can. We can't blame them after a mid-fall visit. Northport is located at the tip of the pinky finger, at the tail end of the Leelanau Peninsula. With a population of about 500 year round, Northport quadruples in size each summer, and welcomes visitors from all over to experience the peaceful quiet and beauty of the peninsula. We recorded the show at The Mitten Brewing Company in Northport. This Grand Rapids based brewery operates a simple taproom featuring their classic brews year round. Stop in and chat with bartender/manager Dan Frank, not only will he quide you to some excellent liquid, he can also let you know all the cool things to do in the area. While you are there, be sure to visit our very good friend Paul Penning at The Big Hot Woody-North End, which is his wood-fired pizza cart located on the patio at the brewery. Paulie joins us to talk not just good pizza, but also his long-time friendship with Amy, who used to cook with him in Grand Rapids. Life-long resident, and great friend, Susan Wilcox Olsen is back on the show, but this time giving true insider tips for the Leelanau Peninsula, from pituresque hikes to new wineries in the area. Her love and passion for Northport shines through. Finally, we seriously talk wine from the region with THE winemaker from 45 North, Jay Briggs. He shares not just what makes their wine different (think cement aging vessels) but what makes wine from the Leelanau special. Omg, it’s the first meerkats live show — on Lukas’s actual birthday! Lukas describes how even while aging he’s still a pod person, which is like an Amish person with a phone. Gabby revisits her cancellation and vaping in a TJ Maxx. Comedians Sasha Von D, Caleb Clark, Dan Frank, and Chris Shurr chime in with sexual awakenings, which really really go off the rails. The meerkats take amazing listener submissions as always and Lukas DESTROYS a piñata with his bare hands. This show was a blast, and Mom and Pop Meerkat have more live shows to come!

Now that the world is changed, so has the show. It's a little more casual, which probably sounds impossible. But don't worry, we're still the same idiots you know and love. Today we discuss Midsommar, Ari Astor's crazy film about a visiting a Swedish Death Cult -- the only thing that would actually be worse than another month of quarantine. Check it out!
Sign Up To Receive Our FFA Stories Newsletter! Email address: SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS: Today's episode is significant to me for a couple of reasons. At the same time, Dan has been building a federation of other silage haulers, almost as a cooperative. This way the federation can compete with bigger companies that have more equipment and get jobs that a single, owner/operator, would normally not be able to get. The federation will split the revenue from the job equally, but each of them is working and not losing out to bigger companies. This is a smart tactic. The other thing that made this show significant to me was a realization that I had. For almost 800 episodes of the Off-Farm Income Podcast I have thought of this as a show about farming. What I realized when I interviewed Dan was that this is a show about celebrating the great people of our country who want to work, who want to achieve something and who have a drive to live the best life available to them. As with everything else in life, as you grow and gain more experience, you realize that what you have been doing is actually something totally different than what you thought it was. Or, at least, it has additional meaning and ramifications than you initially knew. ADVICE FROM DAN: RESEARCH - You need to know your market, and the only way to learn it is to do market research. RIG - You had better know your rig - know what its capabilities are so that you don't get yourself into trouble out in the fields. RELIABILITY - If you are not very mechanical, you had better invest in equipment that is reliable. You cannot buy the cheapest piece of equipment out there if you don't have the ability to fix it. BEST ADVICE DAN HAS RECEIVED: "You're either making payments or repairs" - this falls right in line with the advice Dan gave. You can save money up front on cheaper equipment, but you will be fixing it a lot. Or, you can buy something more expensive, likely requiring payments, and not have to do as much repair work. The choice is yours, but those are your options. Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar was a radio drama about a "fabulous" freelance insurance investigator "with the action-packed expense account." The show aired on CBS Radio from January 14, 1949 to September 30, 1962. There were 811 episodes in the 12-year run, and more than 720 still exist today. Each story started with a phone call from an insurance executive, calling on Johnny to investigate an unusual claim. Each story required Johnny to travel to some distant locale, usually within the United States but sometimes abroad, where he was almost always threatened with personal danger in the course of his investigations. Johnny's file on each case was usually referenced as a "matter," as in "The Silver Blue Matter" or "The Forbes Matter." Later episodes were more fanciful, with titles like "The Wayward Trout Matter" and "The Price of Fame Matter" (the latter featuring a rare guest-star appearance: Vincent Price). Each story was recounted in flashback, as Johnny listed each line item from his expense account. Most of the items related to transportation and lodging, but no incidental expense was too small for Johnny to itemize, as in "Item nine, 10 cents. Aspirin. I needed them." Johnny usually stuck to business, but would engage in romantic dalliances with women he encountered in his travels; later episodes gave Johnny a steady girlfriend, Betty Lewis. Johnny's precious recreational time was usually spent fishing, and it was not uncommon for Johnny's clients to exploit this favorite pastime in convincing him to take on a job. The episodes generally finished with Johnny tallying up his account, making final remarks on the report, and traveling back to Hartford, Connecticut, where he was based. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daniel-lantz/message

It's Easter! Are you coloring eggs? Well, in 1961 colored people weren't allowed to NASA. That's the subject of this week's movie, Hidden Figures. It's OK. Not great. Your hosts Dan & Frank talk about how Frank would have been a great racist in this movie. Beyond that, I don't remember what else we discussed. Whatever.
And we're back! It's another week here at Ya Shoulda Seen This By Now. Hosts Dan & Frank talk Hell or High Water starring Ben Foster, Chris Pine & Jeff Bridges. It's a good movie! But is it too good? Like, too inspired by No Country For Old Men good? I guess there are worse movies to mimic. Anywho, Dan & Frank also discuss adopting a new video release vs. theatrical release model. Chime in!
Welcome back! Dan & Frank have a tough time coughing up small talk, but still manage to waste your time at the front. Dan discusses how he's a ticking time-bomb being Frank's friend and Frank won't shut up about the Disney Renaissance. Overall, they chat about how Moana is good, but not classic Disney.
About Today's Guest The Sales Podcast Dan Franks Session 72 ( http://www.thesaleswhisperer.com/session72 ) *Podcast Movement founder, Dan Franks,* is a former wrestler turned CPA turned entrepreneur turned podcast expert turned major conference creator, promoter and host. Tools To Thrive * *Bluehost* ( http://www.bluehost.com/track/tsw ) : I've tried them all - GoDaddy, Hostable, HostGator, etc. All were good and bad. In December 2013 I took a long hard look at Bluehost ( http://www.bluehost.com/track/tsw ) , and what I found was nothing short of amazing. Their free domain service with the purchase of hosting, their 1-click WordPress setup and great customer service is what every new blogger and entrepreneur needs. Now he's a CPA. Co-founded Podcast Movement Works for a small CPA firm in Dallas but they are very flexible and treat him as an “employeepreneur.” (Chris Brogan word.) He attended a PodCamp in Dallas in the summer of 2013 and 20-30 people attended with a few speakers and he met Mitch Todd and Gary Leland ( http://garyleland.com ) who became his partners in Podcast Movement. They saw their “ah-ha” moment when they realized not enough emphasis was placed on podcasting at New Media Expo in Las Vegas January 2014. They decided to Crowd Source it via Kickstarter to fund Podcast Movement. Launched Kickstarter in early February with a 30-day goal. Found a building for $10,000 to rent and Kickstarter takes 10% so they shot for $11,000. They got their money in 24 hours and went up to $33,000 thereafter! (Learn about crowd-sourcing via The Sales Podcast Episode 54 ( http://thesaleswhisperer.com/session52/ ).) So they vetted their idea and hit the ground running. Philip Taylor is the organizer of the FinCon Conference and helping them out. His conference has grown tremendously so Philip urged them to not try to make a profit the first year. Roll the proceeds into building the infrastructure to grow this into a great conference. People loved networking at New Media Expo but were bummed at how many ancillary events were going on that forced them to pick and choose so Podcast Movement is focused on throwing a central party/networking event at The House of Blues for a great event with free drinks, free food and buses to take you to the bar. People attending New Media Expo also complained at having to spend a ton of money to watch all of the sessions so they are including that in the ticket price. Dan has learned that they need to ask people what they are interested in and give them what they want. There are so many generic podcasts out there like “all entrepreneurs” or “anyone with a dream.” You need to niche down. Make money in podcasting by getting clear on your niche. The daily podcast might be a little overdone. Don't think you can replicate this like John Lee Dumas. (Vernon Foster is an event organizer in Florida and was doing a daily show and he had great content and he got burned out and went from 7 to 3 days per week and now he hasn't put out an episode in a month.) You have to enjoy it and want to do it. Get specific. Niche down. Dan has learned how to guard his time as his goals have expanded. He can't help everyone that just sends him an email.
