In this episode, we're turning up the volume on The English Beat and General Public, bands that defied categorization and left an enduring legacy. The English Beat, often lumped into the ska revival of the late 1970s and early 1980s, was far more than just another two-tone band. Their music was a vibrant fusion of ska, reggae, punk, and pop, creating an infectious and thought-provoking sound. In 1980, The English Beat faced a crossroads. With creative differences emerging, the band decided to part ways. But the musical journey didn't stop for its members. Dave Wakeling, Ranking Roger, and a new lineup formed General Public. This new project departed from the ska-heavy sound of the English Beat, leaning more towards pop and new wave.

The English Beat—or, if you live in England, the Beat—was one of the key bands of the late ‘70s/ early ‘80s British ska-punk scene. Guitarist/songwriter Dave Wakeling sang most of this interracial, socially conscious group's songs, with Ranking Roger toasting, and he takes us inside the making of the band's brilliant debut album, I Just Can't Stop It (out in an expanded edition for Record Store Day Black Friday). Wakeling tells how the bass-driven “Mirror in the Bathroom” came together and digs into the band's relationship with Specials, the Beat's breakup, and songs such as “Save It for Later” and “Tenderness,” the latter from Wakeling's and Ranking Roger's subsequent band, General Public. Was there a rivalry between General Public and Fine Young Cannibals, the other Beat spinoff band? How did Wakeling and Roger wind up fronting their own versions of the Beat on either side of the Atlantic? (Photo by Bryan Kremkau.)
(May 2021) Gil is a world renowned drummer who shares his deep passion and knowledge for Reggae drumming in this great episode. He takes us through all the sub genres such as ska, rocksteady, dub, and dancehall. Plus he teaches us about the legends in Reggae drumming such as Lloyd Knibb and Carlton Barrett and the gear that these Jamaican drummers would use when playing with icons such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lee Perry and many more. Here is some more info on Gil: Los Angeles native, Gil Sharone, is highly regarded as one of the most versatile session and touring drummers in the world, who is known for his creativity, authenticity and strong pocket. He is a multiple-time industry award winner as a drummer, but will often wear other hats as a co-writer, producer, and an educator/clinician. Gil came to notoriety in the rock world as a former member of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Puscifer, Marilyn Manson, Stolen Babies and Team Sleep. However, he is widely known as an expert in other genres. Reggae, ska and rocksteady were part of his earliest influences along with jazz, funk, hip hop and fusion. Gil has established himself in the Jamaican drumming styles, authoring an award winning DVD and book entitled Wicked Beats, after playing with legends Eek-A-Mouse, HR of Bad Brains, Dave Wakeling of The English Beat, Fishbone, Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra and more recently with Slightly Stoopid, Morgan Heritage, and his current reggae/dub outfit, Gil, Migs and Rog. Ch-Chk! This week we step out of the garage to discuss many people's favourite song, "Save It For Later" by The (English) Beat (1:27). A ringing guitar sound, soaring strings, and cheeky lyrics with some clever Catcher in the wry-ness. Dave Wakeling's timeless tune has a meaningful feel & an appealingly feelingful meaning! A lil later, his elder Pete Townshend showed his reverence for the song, making a quiet, beautiful, and vulnerable epic out of it (1:08:25). In 1999, Harvey Danger partied with the song (1:38:35). A real contrast to PT's version, this one is sorta snotty & irreverent, but still captures the elliptical feel of the song. Dot Dot Dot!!! Stick around after the sign-off for a special bonus version of the song by a Mystery Band!

On this episode of Roger The Wild Child Show: Hollyweird we are joined by Christian Love, Tim Bonhomme and Randell Kirsch of The Beach Boys!CHRISTIAN LOVEChristian Love is the son of Mike Love, co-founder and lead singer of Legendary 60's band The Beach Boys. He grew up in Santa Barbara, California, where kicking field goals and practicing archery in his back yard soon turned into surfing and girls. He grew up going to his dads shows, watching MTV and listening to bands like The Police, The Smiths, INXS, U2 & Men At Work. That's what started his true love of music. When he was eighteen, he began playing around on the grand piano in his home on the Mesa and wrote his first two songs. Soon after, he formed a three-piece band called Alex's Cane. Christian fronted several bands in the 90's. He opened up for Matchbox 20 and Dave Wakeling of The English BeatIn 2000, Christian formed a new band called 5-Alarm. In 2009 5-Alarm released their first studio album called “Dancing With The Sun”, a compilation of Christian's songs throughout the previous 20 years. In 2010 Christian formed an 80's cover band named A Flock Of Cougars. Known as a local favorite, they perform throughout Southern California, attracting dancing crowds for fun days and nights, filled with new wave 80's music. In 2005 Christian got the opportunity to join his dad with The Beach Boys. From 2005 to 2014 Christian focused his attention and energy to performing and touring with The Beach Boys. He plays the rhythm guitar, sings harmonies and lead vocals on “God Only Knows”, “Good Vibrations”, “Help Me Rhonda and “Sail On Sailor”. Christian also gets to sing with his dad and trade verses on “Its OK”. In 2011, Christian had the honor of singing God Only Knows at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and he has sang it every night on tour since. When singing songs like Good Only Knows and Good Vibrations, Christian's vocal tone has been compared to that of the Great Carl Wilson. Christian has enjoyed performing next to his dad over the years.2014-2017 Christian took a break from The Beach Boys to focus on songwriting and other musical ventures for his original music and solo career.2016 Christian worked with music producer Michael Lloyd. The English Beat, Dave Wakeling, and fellators.
Good ol' Dave Wakeling. Still out there keeping the flame of English Beat and General Public alive. Sadly, after the passing of his old buddy Ranking Roger three years ago, the mantle sits squarely on his shoulders. In this conversation (that's the best word for it) Dave and I discuss the ups and downs of his relationship with Roger, his approach to songwriting, his non-starting solo album, their early 90s comeback, whether Mick Jones was meant to be a member of General Public, growing old, John Hughes, and about a dozen other topics. Dave and the English Beat are one of the most impactful bands of my life and it was an honor to chat with the legend himself. www.englishbeat.net www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

At the shows, I would hand my bass to Wayne and the band would play songs by The Specials and English Beat.Wayne was born and raised in Coventry in the U.K. and came of age during the height of 2 Tone. He met Lynval Golding as a young teen and that relationship has guided Wayne's professional career in music. One of the best things you can do as a fan of any art is to go into something with no real expectations and find something you think is wonderful. That explains my relationship with The English Beat. The band played their first show in 1979 and were part of the two-tone movement in the early 80s, but I didn't hop on board until I saw the band last year. They were on the Retro Futura Tour, which also featured Paul Young, Katrina Leskanich from Katrina and the Waves, Modern English, Men Without Hats, and Howard Jones. I had a vague notion of a couple of songs, but I didn't know the band's history, how it broke off into General Public and Fine Young Cannibals, or how many hits they'd had. “Mirror In the Bathroom,” “Save It For Later,” “Too Nice To Talk To,” “Hands Off She's Mine.” After that, Wakeling and Ranking Roger split off into General Public and added “Tenderness” and “I'll Take You There” to the pile of hits. But all I knew coming out of the auditorium that night was that The English Beat put on a hell of a show, even with a shortened set. I was hooked. This year, the band has a new album out, and since they tour frequently, I was able to catch up with them again at the Sinclair in Cambridge, just across the river from Boston. The new album, Here We Go Love!, is the first English Beat studio album since 1982's Special Beat Service. It has some of the same qualities as the original three albums – an upbeat sound that sprinkles in a variety of world music influences with a pop/rock center, frequently anchored by lyrics with a heavy or knotty subject matter. Wakeling says in some ways the record sounds like what the band might have sounded like as the Beat morphed into General Public after the split in '82. I spoke with him backstage at the Sinclair while the rest of the band did their soundcheck, and there's a great moment toward the end where Wakeling is talking about some of the weightier lyrics while the band is pumping out some of the happiest, foot-moving music you'll ever hear. Wakeling was a delightful conversationalist. He's thoughtful but doesn't take himself too seriously. And very direct and open about The English Beat's history, his relationship with Ranking Roger and the possibility of working together again, and the struggle to get the new album out to fans. Of the new album, he said he wasn't sure if it was going to be a “springboard or a swan song” for the Beat. I'm hoping it's a springboard, because I'm just getting started with them. You can find out more about the new album and the band's tour dates at EnglishBeat.net. This week's featured track is a short chapter from the Audible version of Sloane Crosley's new collection of personal essays, Look Alive Out There. This is an essay titled “Our Hour Is Up,” which finds Crosley revisiting her grade school days. She writes about how little infractions can stay with you and even form you in some ways. As Crosley writes elsewhere in the book about driving past your old high school, it's “at once everything and nothing.” Later in the story, she runs into someone who had slighted her back in grade school, which brings up some complicated feelings. That resonates with me. It's something you have to be on constant lookout for, these tiny blocked arteries that build up and can eventually stop your heart if you don't flush them.
I catch up with Dave Wakeling of The English Beat. They were one of the most influential bands of the early 80’s. The band’s hits include “Save it for Later”, “I Confess” and “Mirror in the Bathroom”. Their music fused punk rock, soul, reggae and ska. The Beat broke up after releasing their third album. Dave and Ranking Roger formed General Public. Dave reformed The English Beat and has toured extensively. The English Beat are releasing their first album in 30 years.
"I suppose as the world gets narrower and the world gets more complicated, being on stage and singing those songs is one of the few places where I am close to being in charge at everything...including myself." On this episode of Behind The Scene: Guest: Dave Wakeling (English Beat, General Public) Official Site: www.englishbeat.net The song for this episode is called 'Mirror in the Bathroom' and can be found on hit record "I Just Can't Stop It'" Listen above and as always, subscribe direct on iTunes and Google This episode brought to you by Breckenridge Brewery
Ranking Roger is a music and style icon that needs no introduction. He was a founding member of one of the most important and beloved alternative/ska bands of all-time with the English Beat. Then, he and fellow front man Dave Wakeling broke off and formed General Public to even greater chart success ("Tenderness" #27 in 1984). Today the former partners function as two separate groups - Dave carries on as The English Beat in the states while Roger is The Beat throughout the rest of the world. We discuss the dynamic between the two, the state of potential reunions, Roger's excellent solo work, and his views on marijuana. And, he announces new Beat music coming in 2016! http://www.thebeatofficial.com/
Dave talks about The English Beat, General Public, the latest English Beat album, his guitar in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and being called up by Pete Townshend and David Gilmour. I also had the chance to sing, "Save It for Later" with him at the end!
Dave Wakeling of the English Beat invites me onto the tour bus before a show at Brooklyn Bowl. With songs in films like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Kingpin, and Clueless, Wakeling has seen his fanbase continue to grow long after the breakups of the Beat and General Public. Now those fans are even able to sing on For Crying Out Loud, the first English Beat album in over 30 years. Dave shares the stories behind a few of the new tunes and tries his hand at standup comedy. www.englishbeat.net www.drypaintsigns.com
There’s always been some degree of confusion over what, precisely, constitutes The Beat. Here in the States, the group has long added the word “English” to its name, so as to avoid confusion with the contemporary Paul Collins’ power pop project. In recent decades, things have only gotten trickier as the band’s two frontmen have pieced together their own versions of the group. If you go see The Beat in its native UK, it will likely be the project led by toaster Ranking Roger and his similarly named progeny. Here in the US, lead singer Dave Wakeling retains the name, heading up a revue of the band’s greatest hits, with a few choice cuts from his followup band General Public mixed in for good measure. It’s a strange thing, of course, to hit the road playing decades old songs without the aid of any original members, but Wakeling, to his credit, puts on a tremendous show each night for packed houses, middle aged women inviting themselves on-stage as the opening notes of “Tenderness” ring out during the encore. Of course, that he’s still able to tour on songs like “Save it For Later” and “Mirror in the Bathroom” is a testament to some quality in their DNA that has made the music outlive subsequent generations of ska bands, who have come and gone like so many porkpie hats. Wakeling and I sat down in the back of the band’s tour bus to discuss longevity, life, Margaret Thatcher and what keeps bringing him back to the songs that made him famous.

“Before reggae there was rock steady, and before that, ska,” writes Cedella Marley in the foreword to Heather Augustyn’s 2010 book Ska: An Oral History (McFarland, 2010). By way of interviews with dozens of ska musicians, Augustyn traces the history of the music from its Jamaican roots, through its 2Tone revival in 1970’s and 80’s England, to its current regional popularity in the United States. She interviewed Derrick Morgan, Doreen Shaffer, Laurel Aitken, Toots Hibert, Judge Dread, Roddy Radiation, Dave Wakeling, Pauline Black, Kix Thompson, and Buster Bloodvessel to name just a few. The book provides a solid understanding of ska as a music with roots in American jazz and soul mixed with the indigenous music of the Carribean. Augustyn’s interviews also highlight the importance of Jamaica’s status as a former colony in the creation of English ska as well as providing an insight into the music’s reflection of British and Jamaican race and class relations. Most importantly, Ska gives voice to many of the artists responsible for the creation of one of the most enduring musical genres of the last fifty years.
