Wally Lamb is the author of six New York Times bestselling novels: I'll Take You There, We Are Water, Wishin' and Hopin', The Hour I First Believed, I Know This Much Is True, and She's Come Undone. He also edited Couldn't Keep It to Myself and I'll Fly Away, two volumes of essays from students in his writing workshop at York Correctional Institution, a women's prison in Connecticut, where he was a volunteer facilitator for twenty years. He's been on the show three times in the past. Those interviews can be found in our archives. The River is Waiting is his first novel in nine years. He joins Marrie Stone to talk about it. It's the first time Wally has put York Correctional Institution into his fiction. And he puts other parts of himself into this novel, as well. He talks about rendering real life experiences into fiction, how to weave politics and current events into your prose, making unsympathetic characters sympathetic to your reader, what writing in the present tense does to your prose, what Wally may have learned about writing and life from the inmates he's worked with, a little about the writing group he's been part of for 20 years, and much more. Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost… If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "The humans are dead" or possibly, "It's heartbeat is timeshare..."Today's episode looks at "Machines (or 'Back to Humans')", the bombastic Taylor/May collaboration from 1984's "The Works".NOTE: Skip forward to 19:09 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is "Humble Pie" (not cake) by Absofunkinlutely. Before we get to the interview, a message from Anne:‘Hosting this podcast and interviewing all these amazing people has been such an enriching experience, and I had no idea the impact it would have on me and my listeners. With every conversation, I feel changed by my guests' stories. Because it is stories that stay with us, that and how people made us feel.' On that note, dear listener, can you please do me a favour? If you enjoy Out of the Clouds, please rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. It helps make it stand out and will support booking of upcoming guests.'Episode NotesKnown in the yoga world as THE teachers' teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022. Annie's journey starts in Virginia, but she tells Anne how she found her path early on with dance, leading her to the Martha Graham company and New York City. From getting a scholarship to working at the junior company and briefly joining the main company, Annie found a calling in what she refers to as authentic self-movement and in teaching at the Martha Graham Center. An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda's school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga. Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students' expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire' whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.” Annie also reveals her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie? A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. Enjoy!TakeawaysAnnie Carpenter's journey from dance to yoga and the influence of Martha Graham on her practiceThe importance of finding one's truth and balance in yoga practiceAnnie's development of Smart Flow Yoga and the principles behind itAnnie's role as a teacher's teacher and her experience teaching on Glow Glow Yoga offers a variety of teachers and practices that are both entertaining and beneficial.Teaching yoga via Zoom has its challenges, but it also allows for a more global community.Traveling for yoga teacher trainings can be both rewarding and guilt-inducing due to carbon emissions.Tapping into energy and using inquiry are important aspects of teaching yoga.Somatic movement and meditation can enhance the yoga practice and bring about self-discovery.Yoga philosophy, such as the Yuga Sutras, offers insights into time, space, and the human experience. There is a need for more accessible yoga classes that cater to beginners and focus on functional movement.Birdwatching is a passion of Anne's that connects her with nature and brings her joy. Welcome to a soulful episode of Rock is Lit. If you've got a hankering for that sweet soul music—the kind that echoes with the sounds of Otis Redding, Al Green, Sly & The Family Stone, and Aretha Franklin—then you're in for a treat. My fellow Tar Heel native Michael Parker is here to talk about his novel ‘If You Want Me to Stay', a story in which 14-year-old narrator Joel Dunn, Jr., takes us on a poignant odyssey. Joel, Jr., shares the heartfelt tale of salvaging his family in the aftermath of his mother's departure and his father's unraveling sanity. From the rural landscapes of eastern North Carolina to the coastal vistas, Joel and his little brother Tank embark on a journey guided by junk food and the soulful melodies their daddy taught them to love. Michael Parker is the author of three collections of short stories and seven other novels, including his most recent, 2022's ‘I Am the Light of This World'. He is a three-time winner of the O. Henry Award for short fiction and winner of the 2020 Thomas Wolfe Award. Michael has taught for almost 30 years in the MFA program at UNC-G. Known in the yoga world as THE teachers' teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022. QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “Underneath human anxiety is the reversal of identity in which the finite attempts to be infinite. With our finite knowledge, we want to know everything so as not to be caught off guard by anything. With our finite abilities, we want and try to control everything so we're not controlled by anything. We fail to do both because it's impossible to be like God.” ~Jackie Hill Perry, poet, author and hip hop artist “Remember that pride is the worst viper that is in the heart, the greatest disturber of the soul's peace and sweet communion with Christ; it was the first sin that ever was, and lies lowest in the foundation of Satan's whole building, and is the most difficultly rooted out, and is the most hidden, secret and deceitful of all lusts, and often creeps in, insensibly, into the midst of religion and sometimes under the disguise of humility.” ~From Jonathan Edwards' (1703-1758) Letter to Deborah Hatheway (1741) “The Son of God was crucified: I am not ashamed—because it is shameful. The Son of God died: it is immediately credible—because it is absurd. He was buried, and rose again: it is certain—because it is impossible.” ~Tertullian (c. 155-220) North African church leader in On the Flesh of Christ “John is explicitly incomplete in aspects which… the Synoptic Gospels supply.” ~Richard Bauckham, New Testament scholar I know a place, y'all (I'll take you there) Ain't nobody cryin' (I'll take you there) Ain't nobody worried (I'll take you there) No smilin' faces (I'll take you there) Lyin' to the races I'll take you there. ~ “I'll Take You There” by The Staple Singers SERMON PASSAGE John 13:36-14:7 (ESV) John 13 21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus' side, 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?”… [A little later, Jesus said to the disciples:] 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.'… 36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.” John 14 1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” John 1 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 2 13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” 18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
Narada speaks with American singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist who began his career with four siblings in the 1970s band the Five Stairsteps. Skilled as a guitarist and bassist, Burke continued to work for the Dark Horse label as a session musician, while burgeoning a solo career of his own. During this period he contributed instrumentation to songs by a diverse range of artists such as Sly & the Family Stone, Natalie Cole, Billy Preston, Terry Callier, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Dusty Springfield, Diana Ross, and Gladys Knight and more. In 1981, Burke released his self-produced follow-up solo album, You're the Best, but it was his third album, Changes, which appeared the following year, that made a more significant impact.[2] This album included the singles "Hang Tight" and his signature hit "Risin' to the Top," a big success in Chicago.[2] The latter song has become a popular sampling choice for hip hop artists, having been borrowed by artists such as Doug E Fresh ("Keep Risin to the Top"), Big Daddy Kane ("Smooth Operator"), LL Cool J ("Around the Way Girl"), Pete Rock & CL Smooth ("Take You There"), Mary J. Blige ("Love No Limit"), O.C. ("Born 2 Live"), and Sean Price ("Sabado Gigante"), "Rising to the Top" appeared in the soundtrack for the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, on fictional radio station Vice City for Lovers. Throughout the '80s and into the '90s, Burke continued his session and production work for artists such as Peabo Bryson, The O'Jays, The Jones Girls and Keith Sweat, and in 1998 released his last album to date Nothin' but Love, containing the hit "Indigenous Love", which was popular in the United Kingdom via the Expansion Records LabelVisit Narada at his website and socials and leave a comment, like and subscribe if you enjoyed the podcast!Website: https://www.naradamichaelwalden.com/allinpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/officialnaradaApple Music https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/all-in-with-narada-michael-walden/id1470173526

I'll Take You There, Dreamer. The Jamaican-born, Harlem-based artist Nari Ward was barely out of his 20s when he exploded onto the New York art scene in 1993 with Amazing Grace, an extraordinary installation of 300 baby strollers he found abandoned around Harlem. The work, installed in a dimly lit former firehouse, resonated with audiences as a startling and humble commentary on the seemingly endless crises plaguing New York: the AIDS and crack epidemics, rampant homelessness, racial violence, and a city on edge after the Crown Heights and City Hall riots. In the nearly 30 years since, Ward has maintained his role as one of our mourners-in-chief, and his latest exhibition at Lehmann Maupin in Chelsea is no exception. The show, titled “I'll Take You There; A Proclamation,” again taps into musical and cultural history to offer a dignified yet sobering reflection on the Covid pandemic and its devastating fallout of economic inequality, political instability, and profound loss. More than anything, the brilliant new exhibition, which continues Ward's use of refuse and discarded objects, picked up around the streets of the city, suggests that none of us—not even Ward—knows exactly where we're headed next.To get a sense of the show, we called in Artnet News managing editor Pac Pobric to get the artist's take on his remarkable new work.

Terry Manning may not be a household name but he's had an incredible journey that started at the age of 13 when he sat in with Bobby Fuller at a Junior High Dance. From there he went to work at the legendary STAX RECORDS when he was just 15 years old! We couldn't possibly cover everything so some things we talk about in this hour and a half interview are : Bobby Fuller, Stevie Nicks, Stax Records, Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin III, NME magazine, Martin Luther King Jr., Chris Blackwell (founder of island records), Photography and more! It's an interview you have to hear to believe Terry's incredible stories. A man who seemed to be at the right place at the right time and more than once. ABOUT TERRY: Terry Manning is a music producer, songwriter, photographer, recording engineer and artist known for work in rock, rhythm and blues, and pop music genres. Manning began in the music industry in El Paso, Texas, where he played guitar and sang with several local bands, notably The Wild Ones, and on a couple of occasions sat in with his friend Bobby Fuller. Upon leaving El Paso, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked for years at both Stax Records and Ardent Studios as an engineer and producer, recording and mixing such artists as Isaac Hayes, Ike & Tina Turner, Booker T. & The MG's, Eddie Floyd, Al Green, Rufus Thomas, Sam & Dave, Billy Eckstine, Otis Redding, The Boxtops, Percy Sledge, The Staple Singers, Johnnie Taylor, Leon Russell, Ronnie Milsap, and many others. Manning was a principal part of Stax owner Al Bell's production team for The Staple Singers, responsible for such hit records as “Respect Yourself,” “I'll Take You There,” and "Heavy Makes You Happy.” In 1970, Manning licensed release of his own solo album, Home Sweet Home, on Stax's Enterprise label (re-released with extra tracks by Sunbeam in 2006, and in original configuration on Four Men With Beards vinyl label in 2012). Later working as an independent, Manning produced or engineered recordings by Joe Cocker, Wattstax, Alex Chilton, Big Star, James Taylor, Leon Russell, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Jason & The Scorchers, Rhino Bucket, George Thorogood and The Destroyers, Joe Walsh, Johnny Winter, The Rainmakers, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Molly Hatchet, The Angels, Johnny Diesel and The Injectors, Lenny Kravitz, Jimmy Buffett, Shakira, Crash Test Dummies, Shania Twain, Bryan Adams, Widespread Panic, and many others. In the mid 1980s Manning moved to London, and worked for a year out of Abbey Road Studios. As a photographer, Manning began with black and white in the mid-1960s, capturing street scenes and topics of his interest. He has continued his photography to this day. Adding color photography to his repertoire in the1970s, Manning amassed a large collection of private works over the following years. With the beginning of Gallery and Museum presentations in 2015, Manning's photography is now being presented in Exhibitions across the US, as well as world locations. Musically, he also photographed Chuck Berry, Terry Reid, Steppenwolf, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Dusty Springfield, Procol Harum and many other musical artists of the rock period as both an independent and as a writer/photographer for New Musical Express. Manning was one of the last to photograph his acquaintance, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on the day before the tragic assassination. 1991 saw him founding Lucas Engineering, a boutique audio company which makes professional audio recording gear; this company expanded in 2008, adding microphones to their arsenal of products. Lucas Microphones, under Manning's guidance, have since become amongst the top high end recording devices in the audio world. In 1992, Chris Blackwell of Island Records fame sought out Manning as a partner to revitalize Blackwell's famous Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, which Manning operated successfully for over 20 years. Manning's newest music as an artist are the 2021 single "What's the Use", the ECR Music Group/Lucky Seven Records releases of Manning's newest (2019) live album “Playin' In Elvis' House,” 2015's “Heaven Knows,” an emotional look into human emotion, and “West Texas Skyline,” A Tribute To Bobby Fuller, released in October 2013. A little over a decade ago, there was a time when Sean Kingston ruled the summer airwaves with big-time singles like “Beautiful Girls”, “Take You There”, and his Justin Bieber collaboration, “Eenie Meenie”. This Miami-born singer of Jamaican heritage broke through into the industry with the help of MySpace and became one of the first musicians to capitalize on having a significant online presence. His ability to craft dance-friendly melodies in the genres of dancehall, R8B, and hip-hop went largely unmatched for years, but upon entering the 2010's Kingston's career would begin to cool down. Then, in 2011 came a near-losing life experience that shifted his priorities leading to him take a step-back from the industry. Today, Sean Kingston is finally gearing up to release his first album in nearly 10 years. Want to find out what's brought him back? Then keep watching our newest episode of Where Are They Now!

A songwriter and record collector since the age of 8, Patterson Hood's musical education was through his father's record collection. But what separates David Hood from a lot of dads is the fact that he's a renowned session bassist and producer who has worked with anyone from Aretha Franklin to Willie Nelson -- appearing on classics like The Staple Singers' "I'll Take You There" and Etta James' "Tell Mama." Patterson eventually formed Drive-By Truckers in 1997 and despite a rotating cast through the years, including Jason Isbell and Spooner Oldham, his partnership with co-songwriter/vocalist Mike Cooley has spanned nearly four decades and has fueled DBT's cult-like following. On this episode, Patterson describes his love for the test pressing process, playing it cool when you're neighbors with R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, why the band has been so prolific within the last year, and how the Truckers recorded their first seven-inch on their very first day as a band. Follow Patterson @dbtph on Instagram, and visit drivebytruckers.com for news and updates.

El estudio de hoy gira en torno a la historia de la música Soul. La Motown fue su sello identificativo que inició una lenta decadencia por motivo principalmente económico, entonces nació una nueva estrella. REFLECTION QUOTES “Truth is under attack…. Rare is the person who believes that there are facts that correspond with reality (truths) and…are true for all people in all places and at all times…. [T]his will ultimately lead us to nihilism wherein all ideas lose their value. Ultimately, the only thing that will matter is who has sufficient power to exercise his or her will.” “As followers of Christ, our greatest delight will always be found in our obedience to His Word.” ~Voddie Baucham, Dean of Theology at African Christian University (Zambia) “…I know a place/Ain't nobody cryin'/Ain't nobody worried/Ain't no smilin' faces/Mmm, no no/Lyin' to the races” ~“I'll Take You There” (1972) by The Staples Singers “You have to be a bit of a dreamer to imagine a world where love trumps hate—but I don't think being a dreamer is all that bad. Joel prophesied that God would ‘pour out [His] Spirit on all people. Your…old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.'” “We live out our call most fully when we are a community of faith with arms wrapped about a community of pain.” ~John M. Perkins, Christian minister and civil rights activist “If someone had told me in 1963 that one day I would be in Congress, I would have said, ‘You're crazy. You don't know what you're talking about.'” “When people tell me nothing has changed, I say come walk in my shoes and I will show you change.” ~John Lewis (1940-2020), legendary civil rights leader and politician “The cross reconciles men to God and men to each other.” ~Thabiti Anyabwile, pastor and writer “The operation of the Church is entirely set up for the sinner; which creates much misunderstanding among the smug.” ~Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964), novelist and essayist SERMON PASSAGE Psalm 133, selections from Ephesians 4 & 5 (NASB) Psalm 133 1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, Coming down upon the beard, Even Aaron's beard, Coming down upon the edge of his robes. 3 It is like the dew of Hermon Coming down upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing—life forever. Ephesians 4 1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace… 25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another… 29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Ephesians 5 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

I had the best time doing an Instagram Live with Wally Lamb who is the author of six New York Times best-selling novels: I’ll Take You There, We Are Water, Wishin’ and Hopin’, The Hour I First Believed, I Know This Much is True, and She’s Come Undone. I Know This Much is True and She’s Come Undone were both selected for Oprah’s Book Club. Lamb also edited Couldn’t Keep It to Myself and I’ll Fly Away, two volumes of essays from students in his writing workshop at York Correctional Institution which is a women’s prison in Connecticut where he has been a volunteer facilitator for the past seventeen years. I Know This Much is True was first published in 1998, and has now been turned into an HBO original limited series which just aired. Wally and I talked about what drew him to write these characters originally, his curiosity about and research into mental illness, and being part of a fifteen year project to turn his writing into film.
We recently had a chance to catch up with Dondria for an interview on Instagram Live. During our conversation, she talked about the new music she's been releasing including latest singles “Take You There” and “Haunted”. She also touched on what to expect on her upcoming EP “Perspective”. Dondria then talked about the approach she's taken over the years to releasing EP's and Mixtapes as opposed to just putting out another album. We also asked about the music she had created last year with her original mentor Jermaine Dupri. The discussion turned to how Dondria originally was a YouTube star but still has been able to maintain longevity. She touched on how she's never given up after all of these years. Finally, we had a chance to have Dondria revisit her debut album “Dondria vs Phatfffat” and share her memories of creating that project. Check out what she had to say in the video above!

MSC Jay drops a new track with help from R&B crooner, "Rell" of Roc-a-Fella Records with an uptempo smash, "Take You There". The energetic bass heavy track produced by Mr. Hanky (Smile B*tch), embodies a nostalgic sample from the mid-eighties. Representing the Geechie Gullah culture established around the island of St. Helena, South Carolina, MSC Jay is poised to leave a mark on the music industry while shedding light on his heritage. The record will place you in a trance that will have you searching for the repeat button. Take a trip with MSC Jay as he introduces you to the real Geechie Vibe!
It's Sean Kingston! He's a Jamaican-American singer-songwriter with a handful of billboard hits you've probably danced to: Beautiful Girls, Take You There, Fire Burning, Colors. We talk growing up in Kingston, Jamaica and Miami, Florida, being discovered through MySpace, the toll of being a pop-star in 2019, and why he's ready for a comeback.
The whole band gets together to discuss one of their favorite songs off the record, "Take You There". Lucas finds plenty of old recordings to help you following along with the creation of the song. Proving that the black audience will take, a non 'super black' exploitation movie seriously. 31. QUESTION: What pops out for you? 32. Socio-political (1st major shift to a new direction, political power) 33. Shirley Anita Chisholm, (@ 47): politician, educator, and author of "Unbought and Unbossed! -1970 autobiographies. 34. in 1972, she became the first black person EVER to run for POTUS AND the first woman to run for the Democrats. 35. Already, in 1968, she was the first black woman elected to Congress. 36. Her campaign was underfunded, dismissed as a symbolic, & basically ignored by the power structure. 37. And she was not instantly a heroine for black people. 38. Of course, black male colleagues showed little love: "When I ran for the Congress, when I ran for president, I met more discrimination as a woman than for being black. Men are men.... They think I am trying to take power from them. The black man must step 39. forward, but that doesn't mean the black woman must step back." 40. QUESTION: Is this the real reason more black women haven't run? (only other black woman was Carol Moseley Braun from Il in 2004) 41. About her legacy, she said, “I want to be remembered as a woman … who dared to be a catalyst of change.” (Obama?) 42. Famous Quotes: 43. "Tremendous amounts of talent are lost to our society just because that talent wears a skirt." 44. "The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, 'It's a girl'." 45. "In the end, anti-black, anti-female, and all forms of discrimination are equivalent to the same thing - anti-humanism." 46. Conclusion: In our lifetime we saw THE MOST successful path for black advancement. Politics. Only 36 years from Shirley to Obama. 47. Shirley Chisholm was an underappreciated legend and icon. 48. Other Comments? 49. Meanwhile...the Black Power Movement is falling apart! (2nd major shift) 50. 1971-1972 the Panthers split into different camps. Huey vs Eldrigdge 51. They went "Hatfield vs McCoy" and started retaliatory assassinations. 52. H. Rap Brown (@ 29), is the latest high-profile BPM figure to fall. 53. Others include: Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, Elaine Brown, Eldridge Cleaver, Fred Hampton, Huey P. Newton, Stokely Carmichael, and Bobby Seale 54. H Rap Brown sentenced for an attack on a New York City bar?!?! 55. Currently serving a life sentence for murder after shooting of two Sheriff's deputies in 2000. 56. He was known for taking over SNCC after Stokely and his autobiography, Die Nigger Die! 57. Probably most famous for saying, "violence is as American as cherry pie” -and- "If America don't come around, we're gonna burn it down." 58. QUESTION: Was the decline of the BPM more internal (reliance on the gun and violence), external (black people lost interest) -OR- did black people choose to go the "integration" route? 59. Conclusion: The BPM had a great message: Pride, Self-reliance, and education. But, I think they were too extreme. 60. Other Comments: 61. Key Artist - Diana Ross (@28): Singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. Born and raised in Detroit. 76. Became famous as the lead singer the Supremes, the best charting girl group in history. With twelve number-one hit singles. ("Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Stop! In the Name of Love", "You Can't Hurry Love", "You Keep Me 77. Hangin' On", "Love Child", and "Someday We'll Be Together", etc...) 78. The movie dream girls was inspired by the group 79. She also did a few big films: Lady Sings the Blues, Mahogany, The Wiz, etc... 80. Question: Here's my problem with The Boss. Mary Wilson was the heart and soul of the Supremes. Florence Ballard was the best singer. Diana was what? 81. Conclusion: The Supremes were deliberately glamorous, because Gordy wanted all of Motown to be crossover artists. Beyonce has real game, I'm not convinced Diana wasn't just hyped up. 82. Other Comments: 83. Key Artist - Al Green (@26): singer, songwriter and record produce. Born in AR, grew up in Michigan, discovered in Memphis. 84. Kicked out of the house when his very religious daddy caught him listening to Jackie Wilson. 85. Quote: "I also listened to Mahalia Jackson, all the great gospel singers. But the most important music to me was those hip-shaking’ boys: Wilson Pickett and Elvis Presley. I just loved Elvis Presley. Whatever he got, I went out and bought." 86. Started out in 1967, flashed in 1971 with the album, "Al Green Gets Next to You", PEAKED in 1972 with 2 albums - "Let's Stay Together" & "I'm Still in Love with You", and capped 1973 with the lp "Call Me", a critically acclaimed "Masterpiece!" 87. Basically, everything we love about Al was dropped in that 3-year window. 88. 1974 he was born again 89. Soon after that his "girlfriend" dumped boiling grits on him in the bathtub before shooting and killing herself. (with his gun!?) 90. By 1976, he was ready to go gospel. 91. His longtime producer, Willie Mitchell (the guy who discovered him and crafted his music), passed on doing gospel music. (Bounced check story) 92. 1977, he dropped "The Belle Album", his 12th. Rolling Stone magazine said, "We may someday look back on The Belle Album as Al Green’s best" 93. Question: Just an observation really. This is the 3rd major shift in 1972. Al didn't make political or activist music. Some said he was the last great "Soul Man". In 1971 Marvin asked, what's going on. During 1972, in the middle of war protests, Watergate, an 94. election, civil rights protests, the Panthers shooting up the streets, Al Green made LOVE ok again. 95. Other Comments: 96. Vote: Key Artists, ________________________________ 97. Movies 98. Lady Sings the Blues: Based on Lady Sings the Blues by Billie Holiday 99. Starring: Diana Ross (@28), Billy Dee Williams (@35), Richard Pryor (@32) 100. Blacula: important because it was a successful black horror film 101. Buck and the Preacher: important for casting blacks as leads in a western and was the first film Sidney Poitier directed 102. Super Fly: 4th Major shift (The streets are talking) 103. Priest is done with the clothes, the cars, the drugs, the money, and the white women. 104. But, his partner, Eddie isn’t. 105. Quote (Eddie talking to Priest): "You're gonna give all this up? 8-Track Stereo, color T.V. in every room, and can snort a half a piece of dope everyday? That's the American Dream, nigga! Well, ain't it? Ain't it?" 106. Curtis Mayfield (@30) wrote and produced the AMAZING soundtrack. 107. Starring: Ron O’Neal (@35), Carl Lee (@46), Sheila Frazier (@24) 108. At the time of its release, lots of black folks didn't like what Super Fly was representing. 109. Quote from the Hollywood NAACP branch: “we must insist that our children are not exposed to a steady diet of so-called black movies that glorify black males as pimps, dope pushers, gangsters, and super males.” 110. The filmmakers (White producer / black director) say they wanted to show the negative and empty aspects of the drug subculture. 111. Regardless, Super Fly landed BIG TIME with the "post-Civil Rights" generation. 112. They thought Eddie spoke the gospel. 113. Quote (Eddie talking to Priest): " I know it's a rotten game, but it's the only one The Man left us to play. That's the stone, cold truth." 114. Question: Ultimately, what is the legacy of Superfly? 115. Conclusion: I really enjoyed the movie. However, it blatantly dismissed the BPM, and spoke directly to the criminal elements in the black community. This movie, along with the "Urban" writers, Donald Goines and Iceberg Slim, helped spawn a generation 116. of criminals. That can't be a good thing. 117. Other comments: 118. Vote: Key movie, ____________________________________ 119. Television 120. Jan - Sanford and Son debuts on NBC (6 seasons) 121. Theme music by Quincy Jones (@39) 123. Starring: Redd Foxx (@50), and Demond Wilson (@26) 124. Foxx was born in St. Louis, raised in Chicago, and ran the streets with pre-Muslim Malcolm X back in the day. 125. He came up performing raunchy comedy and developed a cult following in the 50's and 60's. 126. In 1970 he flashed in the comedy movie "Cotton Comes to Harlem" and the producer of All in the Family hit him up. 127. Question: Is Lamont crazy? Quote: "MLK left black people hooked on economic dependence and Sanford and Son taught entrepreneurship" 128. Conclusion: Undeniably funny. Redd had the respect and help from some of the best young comics in the business, black and white. Classic! 129. Other Comments: 130. Sep - Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (8 seasons) 131. Fat Albert first popped up in 1967 during Cosby's stand-up comedy routine "Buck Buck," 132. Starring: Bill Cosby (@35) 133. Born and raised in Philly. High school drop-out. Got his G.E.D. and went to Temple Univ. on a scholarship. While bartending, he discovered his comedy talent. 134. He dropped out of college and mastered crossover comedy in the early sixties. 135. In 1965 he broke out in the hit tv series I-Spy and by 1970 he was America's top Black comic. 136. He went back to college in 1970 and got involved with PBS and the Electric Company. 137. During this time, he cooked up "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" 138. It was based on his childhood friends and every show had an educational lesson in it. 139. A lot of times the crew would end the show playing a song in the neighborhood junkyard. 140. Question: Frankly, did the sex scandal undermine his whole career? 141. Conclusion: I used to really like Bill. 142. Other comments: 143. Vote: Television, ___________________________________ 144. Vote: 1972 Biggest Shadow, __________________________
One of the best things you can do as a fan of any art is to go into something with no real expectations and find something you think is wonderful. That explains my relationship with The English Beat. The band played their first show in 1979 and were part of the two-tone movement in the early 80s, but I didn't hop on board until I saw the band last year. They were on the Retro Futura Tour, which also featured Paul Young, Katrina Leskanich from Katrina and the Waves, Modern English, Men Without Hats, and Howard Jones. I had a vague notion of a couple of songs, but I didn't know the band's history, how it broke off into General Public and Fine Young Cannibals, or how many hits they'd had. “Mirror In the Bathroom,” “Save It For Later,” “Too Nice To Talk To,” “Hands Off She's Mine.” After that, Wakeling and Ranking Roger split off into General Public and added “Tenderness” and “I'll Take You There” to the pile of hits. But all I knew coming out of the auditorium that night was that The English Beat put on a hell of a show, even with a shortened set. I was hooked. This year, the band has a new album out, and since they tour frequently, I was able to catch up with them again at the Sinclair in Cambridge, just across the river from Boston. The new album, Here We Go Love!, is the first English Beat studio album since 1982's Special Beat Service. It has some of the same qualities as the original three albums – an upbeat sound that sprinkles in a variety of world music influences with a pop/rock center, frequently anchored by lyrics with a heavy or knotty subject matter. Wakeling says in some ways the record sounds like what the band might have sounded like as the Beat morphed into General Public after the split in '82. I spoke with him backstage at the Sinclair while the rest of the band did their soundcheck, and there's a great moment toward the end where Wakeling is talking about some of the weightier lyrics while the band is pumping out some of the happiest, foot-moving music you'll ever hear. Wakeling was a delightful conversationalist. He's thoughtful but doesn't take himself too seriously. And very direct and open about The English Beat's history, his relationship with Ranking Roger and the possibility of working together again, and the struggle to get the new album out to fans. Of the new album, he said he wasn't sure if it was going to be a “springboard or a swan song” for the Beat. I'm hoping it's a springboard, because I'm just getting started with them. You can find out more about the new album and the band's tour dates at EnglishBeat.net. This week's featured track is a short chapter from the Audible version of Sloane Crosley's new collection of personal essays, Look Alive Out There. This is an essay titled “Our Hour Is Up,” which finds Crosley revisiting her grade school days. She writes about how little infractions can stay with you and even form you in some ways. As Crosley writes elsewhere in the book about driving past your old high school, it's “at once everything and nothing.” Later in the story, she runs into someone who had slighted her back in grade school, which brings up some complicated feelings. That resonates with me. It's something you have to be on constant lookout for, these tiny blocked arteries that build up and can eventually stop your heart if you don't flush them.
In the summer of 1972, The Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There” was a No. 1 hit, the Watergate scandal was in the news, and “The Godfather” was the top movie. Steve Shelton has his own vivid memory of that time: He was 12 years old, riding in the back of a pickup truck with a cast of characters from around his neighborhood on the way to bricklaying jobs. And he loved it. That camaraderie etched into his mind, and it is part of what guided him to found a building trades program that trains men and women — many of whom have been incarcerated — in fields that enable them to make a living wage while resetting their lives. His own journey to leadership included some bricks in the road — some boulders, really — and he repays the second chance that he got by making sure others can start again, too. Steve founded the Trade Institute of Pittsburgh in 2009, and in this episode of “We Can Be,” he shares his story of what came before, and what ingrained the deep sense of empathy and toughness within him that infuses all he does as TIP’s executive director. While there is an emotional and very human side to his work, there are also impressive cut-and-dry numbers: TIP has saved taxpayers an estimated $10 million dollars by reducing recidivism, has a 94 percent program graduation rate, and has placed more than 300 individuals in jobs at or above a living wage. Steve also draws on memories of his own personal battles in the mid-1990s that changed him forever. “Those times imprinted on my mind the importance of second chances,” he says. Because he prevailed and launched TIP, a few years ago he found himself leading a crew working on the restoration of August Wilson’s childhood home. That he and his team were playing a role in preserving the history of the man who so eloquently wrote about the lives, challenges and triumphs of working people was not lost on them. “Have a belief in yourself that is bigger than anyone's disbelief,” the Pulitzer-Prize-winning playwright once said. Playliste:1.Booker T. & The MG’s: Soul Limbo (1968)2. Eddie Floyd: I've Never Found a Girl (To Love Me Like You Do) (1968)3. On March 5, we hosted an event called “Building Resistance.” Radio Free Gowanus, our neighborhood pirate radio station, broadcast live throughout the afternoon. In this episode, we're sharing some of the highlights from the event, as Mike Clemow talks to our community about what it means to build resistance. This episode includes excerpts from interviews with: Womens March Action Club, Roxanne & Andrea, Raven Cras, Ola Ronke, Justin & Nicole, Amy Khoshbin, and Nora Almeida. REFLECTION QUOTES “Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose…” ~Janis Joplin, “Me and Bobby McGee” “If what we do now is to make no difference in the end, then all the seriousness of life is done a way with.” ~Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), Austrian-British philosopher “Life has no meaning the moment you lose the illusion of being eternal.” ~Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980), French existentialist philosopher “The ultimate apologetic is to a dying man…. the news that ‘Christ is risen!' really is Good News for one kind of person: The person who is dying. If Christianity is not a dying word to dying men, it is not the message of the Bible that gives hope now.” ~Michael Spencer (1956-2010), internet blogger “I know a place, ain't nobody cryin', ain't nobody worried. Ain't no smilin' faces, mmm, no, no, lyin' to the races.” ~“I'll Take You There”, The Staple Singers (1972) “It is the secular whose longing for perfection has grown so intense as to lead them to imagine that paradise might be realized on this earth after just a few more years of financial growth and medical research. With no evident awareness of the contradiction they may, in the same breath, gruffly dismiss a belief in angels while sincerely trusting that the combined powers of the IMF, the medical research establishment, Silicon Valley, and democratic politics could together cure the ills of mankind.” ~Alain de Botton, Swiss-born writer and television producer “Too many Americans have twisted the sensible right to pursue happiness into the delusion that we are entitled to a guarantee of happiness. If we don't get exactly what we want, we assume someone must be violating our rights.” ~Susan Jacoby, American public intellectual and author “Definition of a wanderer: A guy who's always looking beyond.” ~Stephen King (1947-present), in Wolves of the Calla SERMON PASSAGE Genesis 23 (ESV) 1 Sarah lived 127 years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. 2 And Sarah died at Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. 3 And Abraham rose up from before his dead and said to the Hittites, 4 “I am a sojourner and foreigner among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.” 5 The Hittites answered Abraham, 6 “Hear us, my lord; you are a prince of God among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will withhold from you his tomb to hinder you from burying your dead.” 7 Abraham rose and bowed to the Hittites, the people of the land. 8 And he said to them, “If you are willing that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me and entreat for me Ephron the son of Zohar, 9 that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he owns; it is at the end of his field. For the full price let him give it to me in your presence as property for a burying place.” 10 Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites, and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites, of all who went in at the gate of his city, 11 “No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the sight of the sons of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.” 12 Then Abraham bowed down before the people of the land. 13 And he said to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, “But if you will, hear me: I give the price of the field. Accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there.” 14 Ephron answered Abraham, 15 “My lord, listen to me: a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.” 16 Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver that he had named in the hearing of the Hittites, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weights current among the merchants. 17 So the field of Ephron in Machpelah, which was to the east of Mamre, the field with the cave that was in it and all the trees that were in the field, throughout its whole area, was made over 18 to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the Hittites, before all who went in at the gate of his city. 19 After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah east of Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20 The field and the cave that is in it were made over to Abraham as property for a burying place by the Hittites.

Before she becomes Wonder Woman a few years later, Wonder Woman--Lynda Carter was from Tempe, Arizona and Miss World USA. The Watergate Break-in had just happened and no one knew this would lead to impeachment of Nixon. Sears had a cartridge TV (Pre-VCR) and it cost $1600 and only recorded a few hours. The Staple Singers had the highest selling and probably the best dance gospel tune of all-time: I’ll Take You There by the Staple Singers. Do you remember Marlee Matlin dancing to it in the movie: Children of a Lesser God?" June-'72, the '60s are definitely over and in a few years disco would be king.

Joyce Carol Oates' I'll Take You There (Ecco) appears to be a novel about college in the 1960s and interracial dating. At its heart, though, it pits skeptical against mystical philosophy...
