Send us a Text Message. When the microphone goes live and the recording light blinks red, there's no telling where the conversation with Kevn Kinney of Drivin N Cryin might venture. This time around, we found ourselves caught in the crosswinds of Atlanta's rock scene, reminiscing about the landmarks and laugh-lines of a city that's as much a character in the music as the strum of a guitar. Kevn's personal recollections, peppered with tales of his Gaelic heritage and the unintentional rechristening of his name thanks to a utility bill, set the stage for a chat as rich and varied as the band's discography.Atlanta's thrumming heartbeats echoed through our discussion as Kevn spun yarns of the community that fostered Drivin N Cryin's unmistakable sound. We unpacked the backstories of crowd favorites, peeled back the curtain on the artistry of busking, and delved into the joys and jitters of live performances. And if you've ever wondered what it's like to jam under the glaring lights of Saturday Night Live, well, Kevn's got the inside scoop. From the whirlwind of improvisation with Paul Shaffer to rubbing elbows with the stars, we tumbled through memories like loose guitar picks. Every performance, whether on a street corner or the SNL stage, carries with it a story—and in this episode, we strummed through many, each note a gateway to the next. And this is just Part 1. www.drivinncryin.comOn tour through September. Please Like and Follow our Facebook page Music In My Shoes. You can contact us at musicinmyshoes@gmail,com.

Kevn Kinney is the lead singer of Drivin N Cryin, a rock band that achieved legendary status in the Southeast during the late 80s and 90s but never quite broke into the national big time. DNC's popularity peaked when their album Fly Me Courageous was certified gold. During that time, the band toured with Neil Young and Soul Asylum, but even after selling over 500,000 copies, they never recouped the expenses that went into the recording and production of music videos they weren't really all that into in the first place. Despite the ups-and-downs, Kevn told me he has never been happier than he is now because he does what he does for himself and doesn't worry too much whether other people like it. Kevn remains a prolific and respected songwriter and tours constantly. Over 38 years playing together, the band has “survived the pressures of fame, a shifting musical landscape, multiple lineup changes, and miles of backroads and highways” to arrive where they are “comfortable with their past and confident in their future.” I had a great time talking to Kevn in my basement where we discussed: Why we both don't love jam bands How the song Straight to Hell went from being a “dumb song at the end of the record” to one he now has to play at every show Why, unlike a lot of musicians, he loves actually appreciates Spotify and iTunes The good part about touring at 62 How artistic envy keeps artists down Some of the bands he has loved working with over the years, including: the Black Crowes, Collective Soul, Indigo Girls, REM, Edwin McCain, Blues Traveler, and many more The difference between Atlanta and Athens, GA Big thanks to Michaeline and Ed Roland for connecting me with Kevn.

Kevn Kinney will be performing in Atlanta and Athens this weekend, and he swings by to talk to us about the shows and life on the road.  Also: One person is dead and another injured after their car left I-75 North near Bells Ferry Road and tumbled down an embankment early Wednesday, according to the Marietta Police Department. Edgar Perez, 45, and his wife, Blanca Manriquez-Rodriguez, 43, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, were traveling north on the freeway at about 5:30 a.m. when Manriquez-Rodriguez, who was driving, lost control of the 2016 Toyota Sienna minivan, said Officer Chuck McPhilamy, spokesman for the Marietta Police Department. The van “struck the right guardrail, flipped over it and tumbled down a large embankment toward Bells Ferry Lane,” according to McPhilamy. Perez died as a result of the crash, while Manrique-Rodriguez was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries, McPhilamy said. The investigation into the crash is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator St. Onge. Deviating from their normal Wednesday morning routines, members of the Catholic Church of St. Ann gathered to sing, worship and have a cross of ash marked on their foreheads. The east Cobb church held five services over the day, beginning the six-week season of Lent leading up to Easter. The season commemorates Jesus Christ's journey into the desert, where he fasted and was tempted by the devil. At the end of St. Ann's Mass, following the Eucharist, members filed down the aisles to receive the ash ritual. The Revrend Joseph Aquino, who presided over the 9 a.m. Mass, explained that ashes are a symbol of repentance for Christians — back in biblical times, people would sit in ashes and sackcloth to express penance. In keeping with that theme, Christians often forego certain luxuries during Lent, seeking to follow Christ's example. An errant kick in a physical education class made the Grayson boys basketball's postseason road more interesting. The Rams' home court flooded earlier this month when a sprinkler, hit by a soccer ball during PE, poured water on the boards and rendered the surface unplayable until it is replaced. Because of the damage, Grayson entered the state playoffs unable to host despite being a No. 1 seed. Archer is now the Rams' home site for the opening rounds of the playoffs. Grayson looked plenty comfortable in its new setting Wednesday night, riding an efficient offense to a 99-56 rout of Marietta in the Class AAAAAAA first round. It advances to host another game at Archer on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Valdosta. The Rams (22-5) put up a season high in points, had 58 points at halftime and 83 through three quarters. A total of 13 players scored in the win. Jaiden Mann and Jack Bourgeois scored 15 points each to lead Marietta (5-25). Todd LeCadre added 10 points. The Devils finish at 5-25 on the year. The Wheeler boys utilized a big fourth quarter to defeat Milton 81-64 in the first round of the Class AAAAAAA state playoffs on Wednesday. Wheeler (22-6) outscored the Eagles 29-12 in the final quarter. The game was tied with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter until the Wildcats went on a 17-0 run over the next four minutes. Every point scored on the run came shots at the basket or by free throw, as Wheeler punished the Eagles on fast breaks. The win advanced Wheeler to the second round of the tournament, where the Wildcats will host North Gwinnett on Saturday, after the Bulldogs defeated Mill Creek 72-62. Isaiah Collier led the Wildcats in scoring with 28 points, including a 12-point fourth quarter. Collier was one of three Wildcats to break double-digit scoring, alongside Rickey McKenzie with 20 and Arrinten Page with 12. On the other side of the court, the Eagles were led in scoring by Josh Dixon with 20, including a 10-point second quarter. Seth Fitzgerald and Avery White each added 15 for Milton. A Senate committee voted Wednesday to advance state Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick's bill to limit passport fee receipts by Georgia clerks of court. As the east Cobb Republican noted, the operative word is now “limit,” rather than “eliminate.” An earlier version of the legislation would have barred clerks of court from receiving personal income from processing U.S. passport applications, which is currently allowed under Georgia law. The latest version of the bill would cap their income from passport fees at $7,500 per year. Senate Bill 19 was filed after media investigations into Cobb Superior Court Clerk Connie Taylor, who has pocketed more than $425,000 in fees since taking office atop her annual income of $170,000. Federal regulations allow local officials who process passport applications to charge a $35 fee for their trouble, while Georgia law permits county clerks who do so to keep that money as personal income. The practice is widespread across the state, but Taylor's proceeds drew scrutiny from Republican lawmakers who pledged to put an end to the supplementary income. Taylor, meanwhile, is facing a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe following allegations she ordered the destruction of records of her passport fee income. Kirkpatrick's version of the bill then carried with bipartisan support. Democratic Gwinnett County state Sens. Merritt, Sheikh Rahman, and Nabilah Islam (the latter two of Lawrenceville) were the three votes against. Kirkpatrick told the MDJ she hopes for a vote by the full Senate next week. Thirty-six of Cobb County's finest minds will be celebrated for their achievements on Tuesday evening at the annual STAR Student and Teacher banquet, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Metro-Marietta. The STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) banquet recognizes high school seniors with the highest SAT scores and grade point average from public, private and charter schools across Cobb and Marietta. The STAR program was launched in 1958 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and was adopted by the Metro-Marietta Kiwanis in 1966.  This year's banquet, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church, is expected to attract more than 200 people. Students who are honored bring family as guests, and also get to select a STAR teacher from their school to be honored. The keynote speaker for this year's banquet is Condace Pressley, a journalist for WSB Radio and Marietta High graduate. We talk with Atlanta music legend Kevn Kinney ahead of his shows in Atlanta and Athens.  Also  A former Doraville police officer who had previously been accused of concealing the death of 16-year-old Norcross resident Susana Morales has now been formally accused of kidnapping and murdering her. The charges against Miles Bryant have been upgraded to include felony murder and kidnapping in connection with Morales' death last July. Bryant was previously charged with concealing the death of another person and false report of a crime. He will continue to face those charges in addition to the new ones. Bryant's employment with Doraville police was terminated when he was arrested earlier this month.  Police now believe that Morales was killed within four hours of her disappearance on the evening of July 26. Morales had gone to visit a friend earlier that evening and had texted her mother when she was walking back to her home just before 10 p.m. Police say Morales encountered Bryant sometime between 10 and 10:30 p.m. on July 26, 2022, and that her death is believed to have occurred sometime between then and 2 a.m. on July 27. Morales' parents had searched for her throughout the night and filed a missing person's report with police at 9 a.m. on July 27. Morales' skeletal remains were found in a wooded area off State Route 316 between Drowning Creek and the Gwinnett-Barrow county line earlier this month. A personal handgun which Bryant had reported missing at about 11 a.m. on July 27 was found near Morales' remains. The cause of Morales' death remains under investigation at this time, however. Run The Reagan has always been a celebratory event in the Snellville area, with the annual road race providing fun, competition and a chance to raise funds for local charities. But this year's race, scheduled for Saturday, will also come with some sadness as those who gather to participate and work the event remember the life of Parks Mann, the race's founder. Mann died on January 6 at the age of 76. A deacon at Smoke Rise Baptist Church, he was known in the community for founding the Run The Reagan race as well as his work with the Gwinnett Community Clinic. Part of Mann's legacy will be on display Saturday when Ronald Reagan Parkway is shut down for the event, which includes a fun run, a 5K, a half-marathon and a full marathon. Upwards of 2,000 people are expected to participate The event, in its 28th year, has been a generous community benefactor for years, raising more than $3 million, which is donated to local charitable organizations. This year the Brookwood Schools Foundation, the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry, the South Gwinnett Cluster Foundation and the Lilburn Cooperative Ministry are the charities that will benefit from funds raised by Run The Regan. For high school seniors seeking opportunities to continue their musical education in college, the next several weeks are known as “the audition season.” Peachtree Ridge senior Jihoon Kim will have an excellent experience to help bolster his credentials on the cello when he makes his solo debut in late March with the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra. Kim finished second in a recent concerto competition to earn a spot performing with the iconic DSO, now celebrating its sixth decade. The Suwanee resident will join the orchestra to perform the fourth movement of Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto, a composition he knows very well. Although this will be his first spotlight appearance with an orchestra, Kim is familiar with large ensembles, having performed with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Emory Youth Symphony and the Georgia Music Educators Association All-State Orchestra. And while he's no stranger to the stage and the spotlight, Kim admitted he's still trying to wrap his head around this prestigious opportunity. Kim has several schools he's interested in and had a late-February in-person audition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He has also had zoom auditions with Bard College in New York, the University of Georgia, Columbus State, the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Kim's performance with the DSO — now under the baton of new music director Paul Bhasin — is set for 8 p.m. on March 21 at the Marvin Cole Auditorium in Clarkston. For more information, visit Dekalb Symphony dot Org. Gwinnett County Police K-9 officer Kai had a tough time last summer after he was shot by a suspect that he was trying to apprehend and subsequently had to have one of his legs amputated because of his injuries. On Tuesday, Gwinnett County commissioners recognized Kai, told him he'd done a good job in his service to the county and said he could now kick back his paws, relax and enjoy retirement. The commissioners voted formally to retire Kai from law enforcement service. Kai's retirement comes after a year in which he made headlines in ways he and his handler, Cpl. Aaron Carlyle, could not have anticipated 12 months ago. A year ago, Kai, a Belgian Malanois, was a newcomer to the Gwinnett police department's K-9 unit, having just joined the department in August 2021, and he looked to have a long career ahead of him. Then, came that fateful day on May 23, 2022, when he was brought in to help track a suspect who was accused of entering a home and threatening his girlfriend and other people who were inside the home in the Lawrenceville area. The suspect had fled the home by the time police had arrived, which is why Kai was brought in to help track him down with aerial assistance from the police department's Aviation Unit. The suspect opened fire at officers who were pursuing him and two of the bullets hit Kai. Kai was in the hospital for three weeks and have to have one of his leg's amputated Police had returned fire and shot the suspect, who was then taken to Northside Gwinnett Hospital while Kai was taken to North Georgia Veterinary Specialists in Buford for treatment. Due to his injuries, Kai's veterinarian, Dr. J.W. Wallis, recommended he be retired last August. Although his doctor recommended his retirement last August, the police department kept him in service for a few more months to help with some police activities that saw him acting as a de facto face of the department. At the Red, Blue and You law enforcement appreciation event last November, for example, he was recognized for his bravery when he received the Purple Heart Award for law enforcement. Sasha Tarassenko, a senior at Paul Duke STEM High School, is one of only three students to win this year's 2022-23 concerto competition with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. Sasha, one of the 114 students who make up the symphony's youth ensemble, will have the opportunity to perform a solo flute concerto next season. The Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra is under the direction of Resident Conductor and Music Director Jerry Hou. Anh Ho, a percussionist at Collins Hill High School, earned honorable mention. Applications for the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra's 2023-24 season are now open. Various combinations of singers, songwriters and entertainers.  But it's the ones that wear their art that get to us the most. The ones that don't know how not to tell the truth in their music and reveal the raw and ragged triumphs that in the end are more beautiful because of the honesty of the struggle. These are the Artists that get in our bones and shake loose our demons by slaying their own with chords and words. Artists like Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin…and Stevie Tombstone." Outlaw Magazine   After a chance meeting with Roy Acuff, Stevie (then a young man) was certain he would always be a musician. Georgia born relation of the legendary fiddler, Clayton McMichen, Stevie immersed himself in the world of rock and the underground music scene of the 80s in Atlanta, but never lost the twang of his childhood. Almost three decades later he has become an accomplished performer, songwriter and guitarist, as well as an integral the Atlanta and Austin Music Scenes at various points in time. He now hangs his hat in Western North Carolina.   In addition to his published works with his 1980s swampabilly band, The Tombstones, Stevie has released five solo albums and half a dozen music videos. The Tombstones song, Nobody, became a college radio anthem. The roots punk song about the Carolina Lights and was later recorded by rock icon Stiv Bator.   Tombstone's debut full length release, 730 AM, featured performances by members of Wilco, Jason and the Scorchers, The Bad Livers, and The Georgia Satellites, and offered tracks that peaked on the Satellite Radio charts. After several comps and EPs, his 2011 release, Greenwood, reintroduced Stevie to Americana and folk listeners with the autobiographical tale of his journey to Greenwood to mark the grave of then un-honored Robert Johnson.   Over the years, Tombstone's bandmates and co-conspirators have been a veritable who's who of underground and nationally recognized players. Priding himself in his ability to cross genres, he has also had the honor of sharing the bill with the likes of Leon Russell, The Stray Cats, Greg Allman, Willie Nelson, Drive By Truckers, Kevn Kinney, Johnny Bush, and The Ramones.   In addition to producing and writing for other artists, Stevie still performs over two hundred nights a year, enjoying a grassroots following that's kept him on the trail for the last three decades. His latest release, Raised on Roots a compilation of singles and EPs, is available now and enjoying growing airplay.

There’s a very good chance that if you’ve set foot in a random bar in the South over the last 25 years, you've heard the song “Straight to Hell.” This song has all the makings of a prototypical country song: twang; heartache; self-loathing; a catchy, singable chorus to raise a beer to. But it’s a song about a latchkey kid with a somewhat loose, disinterested mother. The song, off Drivin’ N Cryin’s 1989 “Mystery Road” album, gives you a great glimpse of the mystery that is the Georgia band: you probably know the song, but you probably didn’t know it was by them. “Mystery Road” itself is full of contradictions. There are bluesy songs. There are southern rock anthems (“Honeysuckle Blue”). There are hair metal songs. There are protest songs (“With the People”). There are bluegrass songs (“Ain’t It Strange”). At the heart of all of them are Kevn Kinney’s heartfelt and voice-cracking lyrics that make you wanna hug the nearest person. Drivin’ N Cryin’ would reach a larger audience with their follow up “Fly Me Courageous” album, but this is the one that shows the breadth of their heart and talent.

This is a special episode segment of The Blind Tiger Record Club Podcast called the B-Sides.  On January 27th, we launched an LP Interview episode discussing Drivin N' Cryin's most recent release, Live The Love Beautiful, with special guest Kevn Kinney. As a founding member, front man, and principle songwriter for the band, Kinney had a unique insight into the most recent recordings and songs, and that episode focused completely on the part of our discussion that related to Live The Love Beautiful. However, we discussed much more.  In today's B-Sides episode, we talk about Drivin N Cryin's early years and touch on every album the band released through the 80's.  We start at the first album, scarred but smarter, and go all the way up to the bands biggest release, Fly Me Courageous.  If your a fan of the band, you will love to hear Kinney discuss this time period.  If your just getting to know the band, this will help you understand the bands significant history.   Here are the songs, artist, and albums included in this B-Sides episode of the Blind Tiger Record Club Podcast: Drivin N' Cryin - "Another Scarlet Butterfly" Drivin N' Cryin - "Catch The Wind" Drivin N' Cryin - "With The People" Drivin N' Cryin - "Toy Never Played With" Drivin N' Cryin - "Build A Fire" Kevn Kinney - "MacDougal Blues" Drivin N' Cryin - "Out Here In The Middle of Nowhere"

In the song “I Used to Live Around Here,” Kevn Kinney sings, “I used to live around here / a long time ago/I used to play in this bar / before we had a stage.” It’s just one number from Drivin N Cryin’s ninth studio album, Live The Love Beautiful (out June 21 via Drivin N Cryin Records), a collection of inward ruminations and distant personal memories set to the tune of no-frills Southern rock ’n’ roll. It’s also the kind of thing Kinney might say during a lull in the conversation at pretty much any local music haunt. Host Chad Radford speaks to Kinney about his recent musical adventures.

Our regular listeners are aware that Col. Bruce Hampton is essentially the Godfather of this podcast. He was our first guest, and has helped us grow in immeasurable ways, some obvious....others not as much. Every year we honor him with his own episode. This year we celebrate his music, and his spirit of shining a light on other musicians. We are featuring his work with another lost musical icon, Vassar Clements. Vassar's 90th birthday was just days before this episode was released.. We have performances from three different years of Thomas "T-Dawg" Helland's Harvest Festival when Vassar sat in with Bruce's Planet Zambi and Codetalkers bands. We also have a snippet of our Larry Keel and Jason Carter interview (recorded at Diamond Street Studios in Atlanta) during which they each discuss Vassar and they offer a duet performance of Vassar's "Paddy On The Turnpike." There are other musical gems as well including portions of Bruce's 2007 visit to the WNCW Studios in Spindale, NC (with his band The Quark Alliance) and the debut of a poem Kevn Kinney wrote in Colonel's honor. Kevn unveiled it at Warren Haynes' Christmas Pre-Jam over and all-star band performing extemporaneously. We hope you enjoy and more importantly that you can feel our undying love for the inimitable Col. Bruce Hampton. Check out our previous Col. Drivin’ n Cryin’ have released some fantastic albums over the years, including 1991’s Fly Me Courageous. Icon Fetch talks to singer Kevn Kinney of the band about this latest project, which brings everything full circle, returning to the band’s signature sound. Kinney has also led a solo career, recording the excellent Macdougal Blues in 1990. Drivin’ N’ Cryin’’s last studio effort was The Great American Bubble Factory. Now the band is readying a series of EP’s, exploring different aspects of their long career. The first one, out now, is called Songs From the Laundromat.
