A brilliant record by The Wannadies from 1995 to conclude the Memorabilia Podcast and a bumper episode for our final outing. We discuss the career and discography of Sweden's hugely underrated indie popsters, look back on live performances we attended, and provide a comprehensive guide through their breakthrough third LP, Be A Girl, including their Gold-certified single 'You & Me Song' featured in the movie 'Romeo and Juliet' and a couple of episodes of Coronation Street! We conclude our very enjoyable Wannadies chat with our album ratings. Spoiler alert - they're high ones! We take a look back at August 1995 for the UK, and in particular, we share our thoughts and memories of the singles battle at the top of the UK singles charts between Blur and Oasis, which culminated in Blur hitting the number one spot the day before the release of Be A Girl. As well as the album charts from this week, the end-of-year singles charts for 1995 also come under scrutiny, which, on balance, was just about more good than bad. Artists discussed from 1995 include Radiohead, Supergrass, Michael Jackson, Coolio, Bjork, Ash, Robson & Jerome and Paul Weller. At the box office, the likes of Judge Dread, Batman Forever, The Usual Suspects and Die Hard with Avengance are doing well, and Rick recalls an embarrassing story of getting stranded in a lay-by with a date after parking up following a trip to see Bruce Willis' third outing as John McClane. We wrap things up with a recent gig review at The Crescent Community venue in York, where we saw Sheffield's Before Breakfast and York's The Howl & The Hum. We also discuss our favourite records, which we have covered on the podcast. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of the Memorabilia Podcast during the last two and a half years, including Andy Strickland, Dan Donnelly, Simon McGuinness and all the people who have interacted with our output online and via social media. Tell us what you think of The Bunker in our Listener Survey – five respondents will get the Bunker mug or t-shirt of their choice. The Supreme Court has shot down the government's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda. Happy Town was attacked by the Clockwork Watch, but the townsfolk, the Vistani, and the troupe all fought back! New Rogue set a bunch of the robotic police on fire with his sacred flame and Tyler did some major damage with an icy spell, both breaking the enemy's ranks and allowing the town to push them back. Del directed her boar into the battle, but it was immediately killed and, as New Rogue tried to spare its life, it exploded. Meanwhile, Shadam used the cover of battle to lure Gilderoy Zindi out of sight, and then killed him, and ate his brain and half his body. Will the troupe discover Shadam's newest crime? https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/12/arts/music/prince-buster-trailblazer-of-ska-dies-at-78.htmlCecil Bustamente Campbell was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 24, 1938. He performed with teenage groups in Kingston; he also became a boxer, taking the name Prince Buster. In the 1950s he began working for one of Jamaica's top producers and sound-system disc jockeys, Coxsone Dodd. By the end of the decade he had opened a record store, Buster's Record Shack, and was playing street parties with his own sound system, the Voice of the People. He decided to start producing songs as well as spinning them.Jamaicans were listening to, and imitating, the American R&B that reached the island on radio stations from New Orleans and Miami. Prince Buster's productions were more deliberately Jamaican. His production of the Folkes Brothers' “Oh Carolina,” recorded in 1959, meshed the traditional Nyabinghi drumming of a Rastafarian musician, Count Ossie, with what would come to be known as a ska beat. That beat, in songs like Eric Morris's “Humpty Dumpty,” made for huge hits in Jamaica and also had an impact in 1960s Britain. Prince Buster's instrumental “Al Capone” was a Top 20 hit there in 1965.By the end of the 1960s ska had given way to the slower rocksteady beat, a closer precursor of reggae. Prince Buster adapted, notably with his series of singles using his Judge Dread character. But in the early 1970s he gave up producing music and concentrated on business ventures, including record stores and a jukebox company, and moved to Miami.

CHAMPION. CHARISMA. CHARACTER. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the epitome of badassness, is facing down Green Berets and Freddie Mercury mustaches. Not only will you see Arnold achieve his highest body count in a movie, you'll see some really awesome stunts pre-CGI age. The script comes from Steven E. de Souza who also penned Die Hard, 48 Hours, and Judge Dread, so the violent act per minute rate is nice and high. Listen in as Jim and A.Ron as they discuss a movie that crashes, smashes, and overall is a raucous good time. Join us on twitch.tv/baldmove to discuss other badasses. Folge Nummer 56. Just human things...
This episode is being released on Memorial Day. In honor all service men and women who gave their lives in defense of their country, I am very pleased to welcome my special guest writer Garth Ennis. Garth Ennis’ body of work includes Judge Dredd stories for 2000 AD, The Punisher and Hitman. His comic book series Preacher and The Boys were both adapted for television. He has been an avid reader of military comics and history since a young age. He has written several war-based comics including Battlefields, Johnny Red, War Stories, and Dreaming Eagles. His latest collection now available is The Tankies. The book is published through Dead Reckoning which is an imprint of The Navel Institute Press. The Tankies is the story of British armored forces that fought during World War II and Koren War. The connection among the three stories contained within this graphic novel is the British tank crews lead by Corporal Stiles. Many of the sequences in the book were taken from actual historical events. I ask Garth why both the British and American tanks were at a disadvantage against the German King Tiger Tanks. Why were tanks crews prohibited from clearing out tanks that fell in battle? I discuss with Garth his favorite Battle comics he grew up reading and as a professional getting the chance to work with one of his favorite artists, Carlos Ezquerra. The co-creator of Judge Dread and Strontium Dog, Carlos also penciled the gritty art for The Tankies. Carols Ezquerra died in 2018. Garth shares his memories of Carols and the special contribution his art style made to The Tankies. I conclude my interview asking Garth my Final 9 Questions including about that missed opportunity and the time he took a risk. Creator Talks Theme Song: "Jazz Relax" from LoopsLab Creator Talks logo by The Design Punk Please rate and review Creator Talks on Apple Podcasts About The Tankies

BBC Good Food Show Summer / BBC Gardeners’ World Live - Birmingham NEC 13 - 16 June 2019
Jim is one of the UK’s leading gardening experts. He was superintendent of the Royal Parks for 25 years and his clients have included Her Majesty the Queen and his old friend the Queen Mother. Jim's love of gardening began when, having been excluded from class, the naughty youngster was set to work in his school's walled garden. This judge thrives in an outdoor environment; there's nothing Jim doesn’t know about planting and growing. His dedication has seen him judging competitions all over the world and sharing his knowledge with the public is his greatest passion. At any one time only 63 people in the world hold the Victoria Medal of Honour – the highest accolade in horticulture. Jim is one of them. He was also head judge for ‘Britain in Bloom’ for 25 years, where he was nicknamed ‘Judge Dread’.

While I was in London for my birthday I got the change to meet and sit down with Pierre Bohanna, prop maker for such films as Harry Potter, Star Wars, and even Wonder Woman. He was introduced to me by friend Kat Miller of Muggle Net, the #1 Harry Potter Fan website. BIO: Pierre’s work history began with apprenticeships in pattern making, Engineering and boat building. Working initially on a bespoke sports car project, then prototype dory’s to off shore racing powerboats. His carrier in film started with a junior position at a model-making and effects company called Bowtell’s specialising in TV commercials and photography. This was pre-visual effects and so required ‘in camera’ models and effects. A great learning experience. Eventually he became a freelance Modeller and worked in the London area for similar effects companies and production companies (including Spitting Image and Hat Trick productions). Eventually he started working on Film Productions mostly at the three major studios of Pinewood, Leavesden and Shepperton making specialised Props, costumes and models. This included films such as Judge Dread, Phantom Menace, First Knight. Then he was asked to organise and make a large order of Props for Titanic. This began his carrier of organising, setting up and running departments for film productions to manufacture Props, Models and special Costumes. This includes films such as The World is not Enough, all 8 Harry Potter films, Sunshine, Dark Knight, Gravity, Edge of Tomorrow, The Force Awakens, Rogue One, Beauty and the Beast, The Legend of Tarzan, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Star Wars – the Last Jedi, The Justice League. Films yet to be released or in production – Ready Player One, Han Solo, Fantastic Beasts – The Crimes of Gringelwald, Extinction, Wonder Woman 2, Stat Wars 9. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mimosaswithmichael/support
I’ve heard many times someone exclaim: “People shouldn’t be judgmental!” But, that’s a pretty judgmental thing to say. Here’s what I say: Be judgmental. Judge more, judge better. Learn to quickly judge what works for you and what doesn’t so you can start actually crafting the life you want to live. Don’t spend another ounce ...

b. Glenroy Ernest Smith, c.1948, Jamaica, West Indies. Smith initially enjoyed notoriety when his single ‘Pitta Patta', backed with ‘Lichfield Gardens', topped the Jamaican charts in 1973, utilizing Lee Perry's ‘musical transplant' rhythm. The song was voted as the best song of the year in Jamaica by Swing magazine. The lyrics were also adapted by Lloyd Charmers for his lewd ‘Big Eight', marketed as the reggae alternative to Judge Dread's hit. An album followed, with Smith covering ‘I Love You To Want Me' and ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night', both successfully recorded by John Holt. In 1974 Smith followed the hit with ‘Duppy Or A Gunman' and the equally popular ‘Key Card', echoing the patois style made popular by Pluto.V

Before reggae there was ska - originating in Jamaica in the late 1950s and still a major music genre. Garry’s guest tonight is Nick Welsh - one of the busiest and most prolific ska musicians of all time - it’s fair to say that much of the ska music that has been produced and performed in the UK over the last few decades has Nick’s fingerprints on it somewhere. He’s worked with and produced A-list artists such as Prince Buster, Laurel Aitken, Dave Barker, Rico Rodrigues, and Judge Dread as well as Lee 'Scratch' Perry with whom he worked on the Grammy Award winning album Jamaican ET. He has also been the bassist and songwriter in Bad Manners and The Selecter (helping to shepherd both band's post 2-Tone careers - he wrote Skaville UK). A great show full of fabulous music... and the kind of full-disclosure interview you won’t find on any other station! “Before reggae there was rock steady, and before that, ska,” writes Cedella Marley in the foreword to Heather Augustyn’s 2010 book Ska: An Oral History (McFarland, 2010). By way of interviews with dozens of ska musicians, Augustyn traces the history of the music from its Jamaican roots, through its 2Tone revival in 1970’s and 80’s England, to its current regional popularity in the United States. She interviewed Derrick Morgan, Doreen Shaffer, Laurel Aitken, Toots Hibert, Judge Dread, Roddy Radiation, Dave Wakeling, Pauline Black, Kix Thompson, and Buster Bloodvessel to name just a few. The book provides a solid understanding of ska as a music with roots in American jazz and soul mixed with the indigenous music of the Carribean. Augustyn’s interviews also highlight the importance of Jamaica’s status as a former colony in the creation of English ska as well as providing an insight into the music’s reflection of British and Jamaican race and class relations. Most importantly, Ska gives voice to many of the artists responsible for the creation of one of the most enduring musical genres of the last fifty years. Heather Augustyn is a correspondent for The Times of Northwest Indiana. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including The Village Voice, In These Times, and The Humanist.
