In August of 1992, the US Marshals Services were called to a property in the remote Boundary County of Idaho, called Ruby Ridge, to arrest Randy Weaver who had failed to make his court appearance for gun charges. The exchange between the Weavers and the US Marshals soon turned violent and the FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) was called in to help. Matthew Del Degan, creator of the iconic Lovebot and the global Love Invasion movement The Love Invasion began as a Toronto-based grassroots initiative, featuring the deployment of 100 backyard made, hand-cast 2ft tall concrete Lovebot sculptures. Acting as a unique and meaningful social objects placed in the paths of pedestrians, each Lovebot sculpture was dedicated to a person or group that performed a powerful act of kindness in their community. The purpose: to illuminate the kindness and compassion in our city and beyond. It became a global movement. Matthew is set to debut Borough of Ghosts on Friday, November 8, 2024, at Worth Gallery.

With Degan Ali I discuss the system of international aid based on her inside experience of working in the sector for over two decades. She speaks truth to power and that really takes some bravery to do, and I honor that. Degan Ali shares many compelling stories from her home country Somalia, but also from several years of growing up and studying in the US. She explains how local agricultural markets were destroyed by foreign interference and how the Somali government is at the whim of foreign donor countries, instead of being accountable to its own people. Listening to her perspective is really important and powerful, even though I don't agree with all her viewpoints. With her voice and her work she tries to find ways to liberate Somalia from the traditional aid paradigm. As it is pointless to wait for the international aid system to change or even to leave Somalia, what seems the most promising way forward is to empower local civil society organizations and to raise their political profile to increase their leverage on the political stage. Degan Ali has been at the forefront of shifting power for decades. She is the Executive Director of Adeso, an organization that made cash transfers a significant, legitimate method of delivering aid to vulnerable populations, beginning with the first large-scale cash transfer program during the 2011 Somalia famine. She is also a Rockefeller Foundation Global Fellow for Social Innovation, a contributor to the Overseas Development Institute, the Humanitarian Policy Group and the Global Food Security Journal. Her work has been featured on The New York Times, Al Jazeera and The Guardian. Dr Tayla Degan is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC), University of New South Wales, Australia. She is also a registered Clinical Psychologist working in private practice at Beachside Physiotherapy and Psychology, Cronulla NSW. She has research expertise and interest in populations of people living with mental health and substance use disorders. Her PhD research focused on the health literacy of people accessing specialist mental health and substance use disorder treatment. Tayla has experience working across multiple research trials and projects, including the evaluation of treatment services, implementation of a telephone-based continuing care intervention for people discharged from residential treatment services, and is currently involved in a Phase-3 randomised controlled trial examining mirtazapine as a pharmacotherapy treatment option for methamphetamine dependence. Tayla also has a strong interest in online interventions for substance use disorders, health literacy interventions, and using co-design. Tayla has a passion for teaching and inspiring the next generation of psychologists and has lectured across multiple Australian universities. Finally, Tayla runs her own business (Our Mind Space Psychology), alongside colleague and Clinical Psychologist Kendall Allsop, running group therapy programs for adults with ADHD. We explore this question in Design Emergency co- founder Paola Antonelli's interview with Italian-born, Somali architect Omar Degan, founder of DO Architecture and Design. Omar and his team specialize insustainability, emergency architecture, and post-conflict reconstruction. Dan Lombardo, President and Chief Executive Officer, and Alexis Degan, Vice President of Development of Volunteers of America Delaware Valley discussed their ongoing mission and programming.   VOADV serves more than 13,000 individuals throughout the southern New Jersey and Philadelphia region and operates more than 40 assistance programs – from homelessness, reentry, veterans assistance, and affordable housing services to specialized programs for individuals living with substance use disorder, traumatic brain injury and/or intellectual disabilities. VOADV's mission, which governs all service and assistance provided to clients in need, is to provide community-based assistance to individuals in need so that they can lead self-fulfilled, independent lives.  They are more than crisis relief, donations allow them to provide the follow-up services to help families and individuals continue their path to independence. We talked about need, he estimates that requests have grown over 65% from last year, housing and employment driving the surge. Dan discussed their family shelters, 2 men's shelters, one medical respite shelter and one veterans' shelter.  They also have 2 men and 1 women's halfway house and other Reentry programs making the transition back to the community more seamless for individuals coming back from prison. He spoke of their new launches, a tri-county IMPACT office which helps clients navigate through social services will be opening at the end of November in Vineland and they are preparing to launch a mobile legal clinic. I traveled 14 hrs to see my Nephew Degan and his fishing partner Troy Jr fish in the TBF Junior World Championships at Sooners Lake outside Ponca City Oklahoma. I was able to sit down with Mr. Randy Sullivan who is the Senior National Tournament Director for the JWC from the Student Angler Federation for High School Students. I also couldn't skip the chance to interview my nephew Degan "Scooter" Dougherty and his team mate Troy Crawford Jr. So day one was a tough day, weight in zero fish really hurt the standings. Day two brought the spirits up with 4 fish weighing 8 lbs 4 oz. Unfortunately, this strong day two finish wasn't enough to qualify them for day 3. Degan and Troy missed their day three shot by a mere 14 oz. Hell of a fight boys. In this episode Melissa Pitotti speaks with Degan Ali, the Executive Director of Adeso, about the story behind the Pledge for Change 2030. They explore the ways in which the process that led to the Pledge was informed by lessons learned from the Charter for Change and the Grand Bargain. They consider the need for brave leaders to have safe spaces to come together on tough issues - and for leaders to be evaluated on metrics of success other than “bigger is better.” They end with reflections on equitable partnerships and accountability mechanisms. Degan Ali is Executive Director of the African humanitarian and development organisation Adeso, as well as co-founder of the first Global South civil society network for local and national humanitarian organisations, the Network for Empowered Aid Response (NEAR). She is a Rockefeller Foundation Global Fellow for Social Innovation, and a contributor to the Overseas Development Institute/Humanitarian Policy Group and Global Food Security journal. "Yoga is my medicine," says Jennifer Degan. Jennifer has 30 years of practice as an educator, counselor, yoga teacher and somatic-based coach. Life brings her great joy and great challenge. Jennifer is a life-long learner, with the equivalent of two master's degrees. She is a member of Wellspring Institute of Mental Health Advanced Graduate Study of Trauma. Attachment and the Embodied Mind is her most recent pursuit. She began the transformative process of her life when she was very young. Her spiritual life opened with the death of a sister when she was six years old. She had a supportive family and people around her that helped her understand grief, sorrow, hope and connectedness to something greater, a spiritual connection to the God of her understanding. From the age of three on, she has known this deep connection resides in us, and that we have the capacity to use the intimate and profound happenings in our lives for greater good. Since this experience, she has transformed and grown from other life experiences. She was dropped at age 11 on her back during an Outward Bound program and carried off on a stretcher. That “trust fall gone south” only made her dig deeper into her capacity to push through pain, debilitation and challenge, and find new ways to discover hope. The experience of being dropped was only the beginning; she has since suffered brain trauma and surgery, multiple losses, and falls that keep her getting back up again, curious and aware that caring for ourselves is an important and necessary job to undertake, as we never know what will throw you back, literally! She takes her practice of life seriously. Hope, persistence, deep love and connections are a starting place for her yoga and meditation practice.
