Star Trek: Enterprise, Series 2, Episode 3. First broadcast on Wednesday 2 October 2002. Stardate: Unknown (2152). A change of pace for Star Trek this week, as the writers of Enterprise decide to explore the rightly-neglected relationship between Captain Archer and his completely featureless Armory Officer, Malcolm Reed. As so often happens, people get strapped to a bomb, Romulans utter muscular threats, and the most interesting members of the crew are completely sidelined.
Oh man we are SO back! By which I mean back to the Mirror Universe, simultaneously this show's least favorite and favorite place to visit depending on which host you're listening to! In "Despite Yourself" the Discovery crew needs desperately to blend in to figure out if there's a way for them to get out of this land of impossible doppelgangers and fascist fashion without losing themselves on the way! Also this week: an unfortunate trope, obvious in retrospect, and Malcolm Reed! [timestamps: Despite Yourself: 00:41; Mr. Tactical Alert: 1:04:09] [report for training!: https://sshbpodcast.tumblr.com/post/773399528688828417/character-spotlight-malcolm-reed]
* The Pit Room's Michael Sambrooks, Killer Hogg's Malcolm Reed, 404 Kitchen's Matt Bolus and Kamado Joe chef Eric Gephart delve into recipes, approach and the purity of field-to-table. * The best insight you'll get on everything from duck, to venison, boar and more from those who live it.
When the Entrepreneur wanders into an invisible minefield, a great big bomb blows open the ship before a second mine gets stuck to a sensitive part of the hull. But when Romulans arrive and start making threats, Reed's near-death experience trying to diffuse the ordinance doesn't bring him closer to the crew. What makes the A220 a great plane? Where is Reed's hurt locker? Why do Starfleet spacesuits need a butt zipper? It's the episode that has made up its mind about Reed.Support the production of The Greatest GenerationGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Follow The Game of Buttholes: The Will of the Riker - Quantum LeapThe Greatest Generation is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam Ragusea & Dark MateriaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestGen and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social

When Tucker and Reed return from an away mission to find wreckage from the NX-01, their busted shuttlepod systems leave them stranded with just a few days of air. But when facing their mortality in different ways leads to very un-immaculate vibes, getting drunk and blowing up their engine are two of the three things they can agree on. What do power strips next to the bed indicate? Where's the bathroom on the shuttlepod? Which of these two drunks is also a Shimoda? It's the episode with a pink lipstick problem.Support the production of The Greatest GenerationGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Follow The Game of Buttholes: The Will of the Riker - Quantum LeapThe Greatest Generation is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam Ragusea & Dark MateriaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestGen and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social
When Captain Archer tries to hail a mysterious alien ship, it leaves without hitting triangle on the Entrepreneur. But when it returns for a noisy scan that leaves the ship stranded, Archer starts to have some doubts about space exploration without key weps. What are Yuban coffee cans good for? Does Ben have a favorite order at any given restaurant? Who always reads the room? It's the episode that identifies and then destroys the most pleasing shape in science fiction!Support the production of The Greatest GenerationGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Follow The Game of Buttholes: The Will of the Riker - Quantum LeapThe Greatest Generation is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam Ragusea & Dark MateriaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestGen and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social
When the Entrepreneur goes looking for a long-lost colony, they find a group of cafeteria Novans living in real Star Trek caves. But when the dumb-dumbs can't understand why they're slowly becoming irradiated, moving them to another continent soothes Captain Archer's vanity. When does Malcolm Reed win? Why is the Hungarian rec basketball team so fragrant? What's going to be good for the health of the ship? It's the episode with a pristine polar region!Support the production of The Greatest GenerationGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Follow The Game of Buttholes: The Will of the Riker - Quantum LeapThe Greatest Generation is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam Ragusea & Dark MateriaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestGen and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social

“Rogue Planet” 20th-anniversary reflections. A camping trip turns mysterious—and potentially deadly—when giant snails get into Captain Archer's head. Actually, they enter through telepathy, not the ear canal, and they're being hunted by an alien race who visits this dark, rogue planet from time to time for sport. Hunting these snails, which they call wraiths, is a challenge for them. Archer and the crew of the Enterprise also face a challenge as they attempt to unravel the mystery of the beautiful woman in a blue dress with apple blossoms in her hair. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 20th-anniversary retrospective that takes you through all of Star Trek: Enterprise, one episode at a time. In this installment, we explore “Rogue Planet” and ask just what the snail is going on in this story that feels like it could belong to any Star Trek series. We discuss the evolving character of Malcolm Reed, Archer's desire to help the aliens who are being hunted, similarities to DS9's Changelings, authorial intent, and more. “Shuttlepod One” 20th-anniversary reflections. Assuming that the Enterprise has been destroyed and that they are now stranded in deep space, the two begin working on plan to get to safety but begin to spiral into despair and doubt as air runs low. Salutations and solidarity, everybody! Apart from the philosophy, phasers and awesome geeky tech, one of the best things about Star Trek is its characters. From Kirk and Spock to Worf, Picard and Khan, the Trekverse is filled with some of the best characters in any quadrant, and they can often be the difference between a filler and a fantastic episode. This week in Episode 12, Silent Enemy, the focus is on one of the quieter Enterprise characters, Malcolm Reed. It would be fair to say of all the crew members that we have met so far, Reed is one we know the least about, and we’re not the only ones. Because when Hoshi is assigned to prepare a tasty treat for Reed’s upcoming birthday, she can’t find anyone, including Reed’s own family that knows what he likes. Report to the bridge of the U.S.S. Henson and join your hosts Jason and Michela as they banter on about Reed’s big day and what’s the situation with pineapples? #startrek #trekkie #scifi #enterprise #generoddenberry #startrekenterprise #startrekfan #geek #trekkies #Netflix Music: (All rights owned by Kevin MacLeod/incomptech.com) SFX: trekcore.com Risa & Shine is not endorsed, sponsored or affiliated with CBS Studios Inc. or the Star Trek franchise. While investigating an asteroid field, Tucker and Reed are convinced that Enterprise has been destroyed and try to face their own oncoming deaths. In this episode of the podcast, Wes and Clay discuss the storytelling focus of the Berman/Braga show-runner team and whether or not it works for this series. Plus! The guys talk about the qualitative properties of T'Pol's bum, the mystery-box that is Malcolm Reed, and how to kill drama by telling the audience that everything is going to be ok!

Enterprise Recast. It seems that reboots and revivals are still on the rise, even in connection with shows that were airing in the early 2000s. Charmed, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and Roswell, New Mexico are examples of such shows that have been remade with completely new actors cast in the roles, even though it seems not that long ago that the original versions of these shows were airing. And of course, we here at Warp Five began thinking about what it might look like if we recast Enterprise with current day actors. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Patrick Devlin and Brandi Jackola share their top picks for the seven main characters' recast. We discuss gender swaps, Starfleet hair regulations, the correct pronunciation of katana, getting Doctor Doom right, chameleons, Cody Rhodes, and how it's not necessary to have Trek knowledge in order to be a good Trek actor. Star Trek: Enterprise was a great show. Some of its characters were not.We all know the walking void that was Travis Mayweather but what about the lack of personality coming from Malcolm Reed? While we love these actors, we also realize that they weren't always given enough to work with. But what if they did?In this episode, we take a critical look at Reed's character and try to tweak, change, and even sometimes erase certain aspects in order to get a fuller and more interesting character.

Silent Enemy. Most aliens in Star Trek are presented in terms that the human mind can understand. The Klingons, the Romulans, even the Borg. We can make sense of their actions and motives. But in reality, new life that we meet out in space will have a lot less in common with us. Enterprise attempted to address this truth midway through its first season in “Silent Enemy,” which pitted our crew against beings that only CGI could create—and who never spoke a word. In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Zachary Fruhling, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Dennis Castello to discuss this episode that includes not an alien mystery, but also a culinary one. Join us as we talk about the true nature of Malcolm Reed, Captain Archer's decision to tuck tail and run, the real reason the Enterprise needed phase cannons to be installed, and, of course, the infamous B-story: the search for Malcolm's favorite food. In our news segment, we discuss a new collection of the classic James Blish TOS novelizations, the results of the Strange New Worlds short story contest, and Simon Pegg's thoughts on the foundation of Star Trek. A Major Pain for Lt. Malcolm Reed... In Season Three of Enterprise, the crew dynamic of the NX-01 was “enhanced" in a way that we have never seen before on Star Trek. Due to the dire circumstances that developed at the beginning of the Xindi Arc, we were introduced to an entirely new branch of service from the United Earth Government: the MACOs; a specialized military attachment with orders to safeguard the crew and protect the mission. On Warp Five Episode 11, Christopher Jones talked about the concept of the MACOs and how they were folded into the overall Star Trek mythos. In this episode of Warp Five – Will, Jeff and our associate producers Mike Morrison and Floyd Dorsey continue our research into the MACOs, with an in-depth look at Major Jeremiah Hayes, played by actor Stephen Culp. Hayes was seen in only five episodes in Season Three as the commanding officer of the MACOs for the mission into the Delphic Expanse. He left and indelible mark as one of the most memorable second-tier characters on Enterprise; akin to the importance of Kellie Waymire’s Crewman Cutler. Please join your Warp Five Crew as we delve deeper into the MACOs' files and learn a great deal more about the valiant Major Hayes! Cogenitor. When we see injustices, it's natural for us to want to change them. But when those injustices involve an alien culture, is it really fair for us to impose our human views on others? This was one of the biggest challenges for early explorers and comes into play when Trip encounters a situation that seems very wrong to him, but is perfectly normal, accepted, and in fact critical to the Vissians. Despite good intentions, his actions to right a perceived wrong have devastating consequences. In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Daniel Proulx and Matthew Rushing to discuss “Cogenitor,” the idea of a species that requires three genders to reproduce, the reasons why the Vissians may oppress the cogenitors, the repercussions of Trip's actions, and, of course, the sensual cheese eating habits of Malcolm Reed. Malcolm Reed. Like The Original Series, Enterprise established a triumvirate at the top. In TOS that was Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. On Enterprise it was Archer, T'Pol, and Trip. At the same time, Enterprise took a cue from the other post-TOS series and created a deep cast of supporting characters. One of those was Lieutenant Malcolm Reed, the NX-01's armory officer who redefined the role that we had come to know in Star Trek as "tactical." In this episode of Warp Five, Christopher Jones and Tyler Johnson take a close look at the character or Malcolm Reed, whether or not his growth during the series lived up to the rich backstory established for the navy man with aquaphobia, how he fit into the overall theme of the show, his role within the crew, and why he will be forever be connected with the tangy taste of pineapple.
