In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery interviews author and academic James Cairns about his collection of essays, In Crisis, On Crisis: Essays in Troubled Times (Wolsak & Wynn, 2025). In 2022, the Collins Dictionary announced that its word of the year was “permacrisis,” which it defined as “an extended period of instability and insecurity, especially one resulting from a series of catastrophic events.” Have we reached a breaking point, arrived at the moment of truth? If so, what now? If not, why do so many people say we're living through a period of unprecedented crises? Drawing on social research, pop culture and literature, as well as on his experience as an activist, father and teacher, James Cairns explores the ecological crisis, Trump's return to power amid the so-called crisis of democracy, his own struggle with addiction and other moments of truth facing us today. In a series of insightful essays that move deftly between personal, theoretical and historical approaches he considers not only what makes something a crisis, but also how to navigate the effect of these destabilizing times on ourselves, on our families and on the world. James Cairns lives with his family in Paris, Ontario, on territory that the Haldimand Treaty of 1784 recognizes as belonging to the Six Nations of the Grand River in perpetuity. He is a professor in the Department of Indigenous Studies, Law and Social Justice at Wilfrid Laurier University, where his courses and research focus on political theory and social movements. James is a staff writer at the Hamilton Review of Books, and the community relations director for the Paris-based Riverside Reading Series. James has published three books with the University of Toronto Press, most recently, The Myth of the Age of Entitlement: Millennials, Austerity, and Hope (2017), as well as numerous essays in periodicals such as Canadian Notes & Queries, the Montreal Review of Books, Briarpatch, TOPIA, Rethinking Marxism and the Journal of Canadian Studies. James' essay “My Struggle and My Struggle,” originally published in CNQ, appeared in Biblioasis's Best Canadian Essays, 2025 anthology. Learn more about your ad choices. NBN host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Tim Blacket about his award-winning debut short story collection, Grandview Drive (Nightwood Editions, 2024). Grandview Drive won two Saskatchewan Book Awards—the Fiction Book Award and the First Book Award. This is a pensive and darkly stunning collection that investigates the strange and unexpected intersections of loneliness and connection. From his car, a lonely, heartbroken man secretly watches strangers going about their lives in the comfort of their own homes; when caught, he wrecks his car in an attempt to escape. A man hears a car wreck outside his home and has a wild night of romance with a strange woman he meets at the scene. A reclusive old writer starts to believe he is becoming his own characters as he writes. A college student looks to his girlfriend's diary for pointers on how he should act. A mother confronted with her estranged son's death by car wreck organizes a memorial service for a list of attendees she has never met. This collection of sixteen connected short stories investigates the ways we humans so often feel lonely and alone, yet cannot avoid having our lives be contingent upon others--often in ways we can neither see nor understand. Blackett's characters long for meaningful connection and struggle to find it; they are too often unaware of the connections that are right in front of them. Grandview Drive is a collection that builds on itself; the stories stand on their own, but they are strengthened by the (sometimes secret) connections they hold with each other. Blackett's debut asks the reader to think about love and loss, loneliness and heartbreak, redemption and starting life anew. About Tim Blackett: Tim Blackett is a Canadian writer whose work has appeared in Briarpatch, [spaces], Grain Magazine and a small Saskatchewan journal called Swift, Flowing. He holds a Bachelor of Theology and a BA in English from the University of Regina, as well as a certificate in creative writing from Humber College. His short story collection, Grandview Drive, was shortlisted for two Saskatchewan book awards, and a pre-publication version placed second in the John V. Hicks Long Manuscript Award (2019). The titular story, "Grandview Drive" was longlisted for the Carter v. Cooper Short Fiction Award (2012). Blackett lives in Regina, SK. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Fuse, her memoir of mixed-race identity and mental health, was released by Guernica Editions in 2021 and won the 2023 Canadian Bookclub Award for Nonfiction/Memoir. Her collection of poetry, Rebellion Box was released by Radiant Press in 2023, and her collection of short fiction, Widow Fantasies, was released with Gordon Hill Press in fall 2024. Her debut novel, The Unraveling of Ou, is due out with Palimpsest Press in 2026, and her children's book, Being with the Birds, with Guernica Editions in 2027. SUMMARY In this month's episode of The SpokenWeb Podcast, ShortCuts is taking over the airwaves. ShortCuts is the monthly minisode that takes you on a deep dive into archival sound through a short ‘cut' of audio. In this fifth season, ShortCuts producer Katherine McLeod has been presenting a series of live conversations recorded at the 2023 SpokenWeb Symposium – and in this full episode, we're rolling out the last of those recordings. You'll hear from Moynan King, Erica Isomura and Rémy Bocquillon. You'll also hear the voices of our then-supervising producer Kate Moffatt and our then-sound designer Miranda Eastwood, who was there behind-the-scenes recording the audio and who joins in the conversations too. Listening is at the heart of each conversation, and each conversation ends with the question: What are you listening to now? That ends up being quite an eclectic playlist and do check the Show Notes below for links. If you like what you hear, check out the rest of Season Five of ShortCuts for conversations with Jennifer Waits, Brian Fauteaux, and XiaoXuan Huang. All eyes are on occupied Palestine. The zionist entity has been expelling Palestinians from their lands for a century, and have been perpetrating an outright genocide for a half a year now, supplied by western weapons and western excuses. While protestors gather in the tens of thousands in Toronto, the Canadian media industry works overtime to vilify them, and police conduct pre-dawn raids on the homes of those who stand against prominent local zionists. In this episode, my guests and I discuss the history of zionism, the way mainstream media outlets try to obscure the material reality of colonization, “purplewashing” tactics, and how you can help fight for Palestine. Welcome to today's show! You are in for a treat today. Not only do I have two very interesting gentlemen, but we are going to talk about an incredible organization that is doing amazing work here in our community! Regular listeners will remember us talking about Neighbors Helping Neighbors on a previous episode, but we have an announcement today that you do NOT want to miss! First, we'll hear from Mike Rainey, a lifelong resident of Eatonton & Putnam County about growing up here when it was just like Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show! His family has operated Briarpatch Farms for five generations and has been designated a Centennial Farm, having been in operation for over 120 years! Mike will tell us why he loves farming, loves the land and loves to give back to the community that has been his lifelong home. We will give you some background and updates on Neighbors Helping Neighbors, and its mission to help people in our community by providing them a hand up, not a hand out. The need is still great, to help our neighbors with repairs for their homes, transportation and even beds for kids who have nothing to sleep on. And we will announce Songwriters Night at the Briarpatch on April 20, an unforgettable experience for you and an important fundraiser benefiting Neighbors Helping Neighbors. You will experience an evening filled with music and stories from the talented songwriters Lee Thomas Miller and Wendell Mobley, straight from Nashville! Don't miss this! It's a win-win, for both you and for Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Guests - Mike Rainey & Bob Massey https://www.nhnga.org/ https://www.briarpatchfarmga.com/ Sponsors - Lake Oconee Bistro; Tim Broyles State Farm; Farmers & Merchants Bank; Simplify AI Academy https://www.lakeoconeebistro.com/ https://mydowntownagency.com/ https://ibankfmb.com/ http://simplifyai.academy
We begin a new year of the show this week, and kick off the campaign by welcoming These Estates and Oiseaux musician and Briarpatch publisher John Cameron for an unseen selection from his collection, a prescient political satire that is now 52 years old but could release today with few alterations and still feel timely. It's 1972's The Candidate, directed by Michael Ritchie, and starring Robert Redford, Peter Boyle, Melvyn Douglas, Don Porter, Allen Garfield, Karen Carlson and Michael Lerner. It's a comedy without any jokes that still manages to be fairly funny, at least when its bleak political outlook doesn't feel equal parts harrowing and deadly accurate. Plus: J Mo's hooked on Pocket Card Jockey, while Hayley and John are willing to die for Casino Regina. Other works discussed on this episode include Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two, Aquaman & The Last Kingdom, Beau Is Afraid, The Devils, Go, Ocean's Eleven, Bulworth, Fletch, Fletch Lives, season 6 of The West Wing, Parks & Recreation, The Thick of It, In The Loop, Death of Stalin, The Newsroom (CBC), The Ides of March, Our Brand Is Crisis, and Lions For Lambs among many more. If you'd like to watch The Candidate before listening to our discussion, some maniac has posted the entire movie for free on YouTube. And we thank them. We'll be back next week as Year 2 on the pod continues with a shot at redemption for two top stars who have recently wronged us on the pod by being in movies we watched that were not good. Yes, Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer can completely redeem themselves as we'll be back to watch 1994's Tombstone, a 90s VHS classic that somehow both hosts have never seen before. It's currently streaming on Disney+ if you want to watch it, and of course we're wrapping up the month the week after with our monthly canon submission, Christopher Nolan's TENET. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
When it comes to running a competitive company, Bob Moog doesn't play games. Well, actually, he does. Daily. Bob is co-founder and president of University Games, the largest independent game company in the world. For almost four decades, Bob has gone up against the biggest players — including Hasbro and Mattel — and found a way to beat them at their own game. Pun intended. In fact, University Games distributes more products in more outlets and more markets than any other company focused on board games. The company now has six divisions: University Games (board games), Great Explorations (science and learning/glow-in-the-dark products), BePuzzled (puzzles and brainteasers), Briarpatch (preschool games and puzzles), U-Create (crafts and activities), and Front Porch Classics (classic games, built to last a lifetime). University Games' philosophy has always been to offer games that encourage social interaction and imagination through gameplay, with learning sprinkled in to spice it up. Bob's story will inspire anyone who competes against entrenched giants. He'll also share the management philosophy that has proven a game winner for just shy of four decades. Monday Morning Radio is hosted by the father-son duo of Dean and Maxwell Rotbart. We're celebrating one full year of being unlikely partners on the podcast beat by finally getting around to what we've been told is one of the all-time great buddy cop movies. Yes it's 1989's Tango & Cash, directed by a three-headed monster of directors on a deeply troubled production but overseen in post-production by Demolition Man editor Stuart Baird, and starring Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Jack Palance, Teri Hatcher, Brion James, James Hong, Michael J. Pollard, Robert Z'Dar, Lewis Arquette, Eddie Bunker and Clint Howard. No sense sugar-coating it, she doesn't want it to be a secret: Hayley hated this movie. But J Mo still makes the case for its not-so-guilty pleasures, and we reflect on a full year of doing the show. Of course, with the Oscars on Sunday we also take a quick minute to make our picks in the major categories, leading Justin to discover that while he's now seen 100 films from 2023, he's somehow missed almost all the Oscar movies. Embarrassing. We're going heavy on Oppenheimer. Big surprise. Other works discussed in this episode include Dune: Part Two, Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Spaceballs, The Princess Bride, The Emperor's New Groove, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Voyeurs, Deep Water, Nocturne, The Perfection, Tenet, The Fast Franchise, First Blood, Rocky, Thief, The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy, Cobra, and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. We'll be back next week to kick off a new campaign as we're joined by Briarpatch publisher and all-around good dude John Cameron to discuss the 1972 Robert Redford political satire The Candidate, which is currently available to watch in its entirety for free on YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

November 22nd Podcast Welcome to your Paulding County News Podcast. I'm Melissa Carter, along with Doug Harding. We'll help you with stress-free air travel for Thanksgiving, and a family member of a well-known Georgia politician has been arrested. But first… PC News The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is seeking the public's help in locating three men for questioning in the homicide of a Paulding County native. The men were spotted in the Baytree Place shopping plaza in Remerton, around the time 21-year-old Brianna Long was tragically shot and killed. The incident occurred on October 29th at The Pier Bar on Baytree Place. Reports indicate that gunfire erupted outside the bar at 2:30 a.m., claiming the life of Brianna Long as she was finishing her work. The GBI states a dispute outside the bar led to the shooting, with multiple vehicles and the bar itself also targeted. Long, a former Paulding County High School soccer star attending Valdosta State University, was remembered by her aunt as charismatic and funny. The GBI urges anyone with information on the whereabouts of these three men to contact their Investigative Field Office in Thomasville at 229-225-4090. This from WSB. PC News Over 50 churches in North Georgia and metro Atlanta are set to leave the United Methodist Church by the end of this month. The decision, affecting a total of 265 congregations, comes after a vote to dis-affiliate due to a longstanding split over LGBTQ issues. The North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church ratified the dis-affiliation requests of 261 churches during a special session on November 18th. Dis-affiliated churches in Paulding County include: Bethel UMC in Hiram Flint Hill UMC in Hiram Hope UMC in Dallas Mt Nebo UMC in Dallas and Smyrna UMC in Dallas The departure of these churches, effective November 30th, marks a significant moment for the denomination. Church leaders expressed sadness, calling it a "solemn day" in a news release. Following the exit, these congregations are no longer permitted to use the "United Methodist" name or logo. This from Now Habersham. PC News Attention holiday travelers! Navigating Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport this season demands strategic planning. With parking shortages, security lines exceeding an hour, and construction causing disruptions, here's your guide for a smooth journey. Arrive 3 hours early during peak times, brace for parking challenges due to ongoing construction, and check bag lines. Security may be time-consuming with lane closures and upgrades. Consider alternative parking options or use MARTA. For a stress-free experience, make parking reservations, utilize off-airport lots, and stay updated on security wait times. Pack snacks, as concessions may have long lines. Stay informed and plan ahead for a hassle-free holiday travel experience at the world's busiest airport. This from the AJC. A family member of a well-known Georgia politician has been arrested, and what are you thankful for in town? We'll talk about it, but now let's check the weather for Paulding County… Weather Partly sunny for your Thanksgiving week, with High's in the upper 50's and Lows from 39 tonight to the mid-to-upper 40's the rest of the holiday. Arrest Report From WSB's Facebook Page: Jimmie Gardner, the brother-in-law of Stacey Abrams and the husband of a Georgia federal judge, has been charged with human trafficking. Seth Olson asked: How does a federal judge get to marry someone that has a record but not someone on probation? Monique Pellant said: Anyone that voted for her should be lined up to jin the trafficking ring. But Paul Leonard asked: What does that have to do with Stacy Abrams? Gene Hampton simply stated: Jus Pimpin', bro. Nuttin' to see here. Social Media From the Paulding County Uncensored Facebook Page: What are you thankful for, Paulding County edition? Ex. That's how this story feels to me, after a mayoral race in North Carolina was decided by a coin toss. The coin flip happened, after the leading candidates for mayor of Monroe tied with 970 votes each. Robert Burns emerged victorious in the flip, leaving supporters in celebration. At the Union County elections board meeting, both candidates waived their right to a recount, adhering to state law that determines tied races by lot. Bob Yanacsek called heads, but the coin landed tails, sealing Robert Burns' win. The board unanimously declared him the mayor. Events November 25th, 3-7p - Christmas Tree Lighting in downtown Dallas. November 28th, 6p-8p - Paulding Cops for Kids Sign-Ups at the Paulding County Sheriff's Office in Dallas. December 9th, 6p - Christmas Market at Dallas Family Chiropractic. The Carter Center confirmed her peaceful passing at her home in Plains, Georgia, Sunday afternoon, surrounded by family. Mrs. Carter, diagnosed with dementia six months ago, had entered hospice care at home. A staunch mental health advocate, she continued her work even after leaving the White House, leaving a lasting impact on awareness and legislation. Married to President Jimmy Carter for 77 years, the Carters devoted their lives to public service, founding the nonprofit Carter Center in 1982. Rosalynn's passion extended globally, focusing on health and farming practices in Africa and supporting Habitat for Humanity. The Carters' legacy lives on in Plains, Georgia, where a road, the "Rosalynn Carter Trail," was dedicated in her honor. This from WSB. PC News Scammers are targeting your hard-earned money, and the Better Business Bureau is sounding the alarm, especially when it comes to gift card scams. Simone Williams from the Atlanta BBB warns, "Once you send that money out, it's gone." Online sales and fake legal issues are the tactics, with victims losing nearly $700 million this year. Williams notes scammers are even posing as authorities, demanding payment in gift cards to resolve non-existent warrants. Over 200,000 people reported falling victim. To fight back, retailers are using fraud-detecting software, and the BBB suggests reporting suspected fraud to the card seller. Additional tips to avoid scams include buying e-gift cards, inspecting packaging for tampering, using the card promptly, and saving receipts to file a claim for missing funds. This from 11 Alive. Sports From the Paulding Sports Chronicles: Congrats on great seasons for both North Paulding and Hiram High Schools. Both are out of the tournament as North Paulding fell to Grayson 42-18; and Hiram lost to Jefferson 42 to 21. Most of the items are available now, or will be by September 12th. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2023/08/disney-eats-top-5-plant-based-items-for-fall-at-disneyland-resort/ The Villas at the Disneyland Hotel open at the end of September, where you can see a new hidden Mickey-filled mural, inspired by Disney Animation. The mural, created by associate production designer on “Encanto” Lorelay Bove, will greet guests when they enter the new tower. The mural is also available to download at the link in our show notes. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2023/08/disney-animation-inspired-mural-will-wow-you-in-the-villas-at-disneyland-hotel/ Starting January 20, 2024, there will be some changes coming to Disneyland Resort Hotel guests. Early entry will allow ticketed guests, with valid park admission and reservations to enter a designated theme park each day of their stay at a Disneyland Resort Hotel. Each day, EITHER Disneyland or Disney California Adventure will be open early, instead of the current early entry into BOTH of the parks. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2023/08/24/breaking-new-policy-announced-for-early-entry-at-disneyland/#more-846277 https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/08/updated-dining-reservation-system-launches-on-the-disneyland-resort-app/ https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2023/08/25/the-controversial-disney-hotel-change-thats-dividing-fans/#more-846342 The updated dining reservation system that we spoke about previously has now gone live. Guests can now tap the “Check Dining Availability” button in the menu and enter the party size, date, and time window to see what is available at the resort. This is a much better, more reliable and easier to navigate system than the old system which would sometimes not show open times. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/08/updated-dining-reservation-system-launches-on-the-disneyland-resort-app/ If you tuned into our public livestream on YouTube this past Sunday, you heard us talk about Disney Locana, the new deck-building game from Ravensburger. The game went on sale at Disney Pin Traders in Downtown Disney on Monday morning. They had a good amount of stock on hand that morning, but your mileage may vary. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/08/disney-lorcana-sales-officially-launch-at-disneyland-resort/ Discussion Topic: Tage and James tell us all about their recent trip to Disneyland.
In the 1970s, the natural foods movement took American consumers by storm. That resulted in a number of things — carob cookies and Santa Cruz Organics — but it also became a catalyst for cooperative grocery stores. Here in Nevada County, we can see that history reflected in BriarPatch, which recently opened a second location in Auburn. Over the weekend, KVMR's Julia Ggem visited the new co-op base to learn more about how it might function in Placer County.
In this live edition of the KVMR Evening News, News Director Cláudio Mendonça speaks with Paul Cummings, Office of Emergency Services Program Manager, about live, incoming updates pertaining to the Highway Fire. Zone statuses, evacuation orders, road closures, and resources are all of particular interest. Then, after a look at regional news and weather, KVMR's Julia Ggem gives us the run-down on the history of BriarPatch, Nevada County's natural foods co-op, and highlights its new location in Auburn.

We take one more trip to the Briar Patch to honor the memory of a ride that probably shouldn't have been built even in a prior century. But it was built, it had a good run, and it's finally being re-themed to something with far fewer racial undertones, so the C-Ticket Podcast is taking the plunge into the wild world of Save Splash stans, the gross implications of "Flash Mountain", and mine gas.Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe, and find your laughin' place.MERCH AVAILABLE NOW!https://www.teepublic.com/user/the-c-ticket-podcastFOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:TIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@cticketpodINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/cticketpod/TWITTER: https://twitter.com/CTicketPodEMAIL US:cticketpod@gmail.comMusic:Delightful D Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
